It only took me two evenings to read this book. The beginning intrigued me, and the next day after work I actually felt a twinge of something I haven't felt in a while: I wanted to get back to the book to see what would happen next. The story isn't bogged down by details of what had happened to the environment Miller lives in, and the book reveals things as necessary, not choking the reader with chapters full of back story that kills the interest.
I do recommend this book for readers who enjoy post-apocalyptic books. I would have given it five stars, since I do want to read the rest of the series, but the editing is a bit lacking. Don't get scared off because of that, this is worth reading. The mistakes are almost funny, rather than jarring. Fortunately, the story is engaging and creative, with a sense of realism that works well with the narrative.
For those who think Riley might be a bit over the top, particularly with how much she curses, I'd like to defend her. I've spent time with a number of military women just out of the service, and some were very much like Riley's character (not all). I found her crass and... I found the ex-military folks just out of the service that I have spent time with very much like her, particularly the young ones.
All said, I'm looking forward to reading more by this author.
