Sometimes, the cravings just take over.

Jimmie Putnam is an ordinary man by any measure. By day, he works as a law clerk. At night, when he can't fight the cravings, he becomes a collector. He takes great care of his human Things; buying them cherry lipstick and reading to them from his journal. When they've been on their best behavior, he even takes them out of his freezers...

Sometimes, the need is just too deep.

Florel Ross has been mostly invisible since the death of her twin, who died twenty years ago at the hands of a serial killer. Obsessed with justice, Florel is willing to risk anything for the answers she craves: What goes on in the mind of a serial killer?

When the two yearnings collide, will it be justice or just Things?

I am horribly fascinated with this book. It was amazing. Dark and fascinating. It dives into a serial killers mind, actions, and thought process. It also shows the other side of the law enforcements frustrations in trying to catch a serial killer that thinks he knows the game.
Erin's writing is amazing. Character development is crucial in a story like this and she absolutely nailed it on the head.
The plot was just as amazing as the characters.
Can't wait to read more about Jimmie!

This is diving deep into seriel killer Jimmies mind and his story of past and present along with his frozen things and what he does specificalty to each one and in very graphic detail on how he picks and chooses and cares for them and no one would know any difference hes a normal guy in the outside world and it is terrifying to think of something like that out there just lurking. Dectective Floral Ross is determined to catch this physco and we get a lot of her imput and why this case is so close to her. this was the most amazing book I think I have ever read the detail is beyond incredible and I cant wait to start the next one.

Oh my dayz. What a story. I believe I must have a dark soul as I loved this story. It truly is all sorts of dark and disturbed. Lots of what the heck moments had me gripped from start to finish. I could not put it down.

The story is told through two points of view. Jimmie the serial killer and Florel the FBI Agent trying to catch him. Jimmie is a serial killer who collects things- human bodies.

So looking forward to reading more about these two characters.

I had previously read a few of Erin Lee's books and loved them. I had found her like the teen version of Torey Hayden who writes true stories of tragic lives and children that she has counseled. So when I saw this one, I was excited as it touched the base of a few of my other favorite things to read or read about - Diaries and Serial Killers. Unfortunately, I think for me I had built up the hype of this book in my head and found it wasn't as good as I was expecting. I did however still managed to finish it and found it interesting as an insight into the serial killer's mind and also the cop who had an obsession with this case due to his own sister's disappearance. I think too that I was hoping for a connection between the detective - Florel Ross, the Serial Killer - Jimmie and Sarah - the detective's missing twin sister but there was none. Often Serial Killers and male ones at that, supposedly have their issues stemmed from childhood abuse, bad mothers and that's why they target their victims. Jimmie's mother was a collector, and Jimmie had a too close relationship with his mother which fit the profile of a serial killer , but of course Just Things also shows the charming side of psychopaths and how often they get away with things, because they are the least expected due to either their charming and persuasive nature or they are viewed as shy, demure and weak and often have a disability. If you too have a fascination with criminology and psychology, then check out Book #1 Just Things - The Diary of a Serial Killer by Erin Lee today.

So much to love about this book. Lee does such a wonderful job of pulling you into the mind of a serial killer. There were times I actually sympathized with Jimmie. Crazy how that happens! Jimmie's character isn't one you'll soon forget. It was fascinating to see how his dark and twisted mind works.

I also loved how Lee flips from the killers perspective to the detective that is working the case. The journal writing style is also unique and really adds intrigue to the story. Some of the similarities between Jimmie and the detective were unreal. I can't wait to check out the rest of this series. I'm really curious to see where this goes!

I absolutely love dark reads but this one is one of the darkest that I have read. We get to dive into and swim around in the mind of Jimmie, the Serial Killer. His actions are so disturbing I just wanted to know everything that he did to his Things (guess I'm just as disturbed as he is, lol).
The characters, Jimmie and Florel are well developed and to a certain extent they are two peas in a pod. They are both striving to please others, even if it is all in their mind. I'm going to enjoy reading the next chapter in the lives of Jimmie and Florel.

Ever since I've watched the movie Legion, I have been absolutely terrified of the ice cream man. Understand that now so that this review makes some kind of sense.

This book didn't help that fear. It's dark and powerful; stupendously written and will leave you in a psychological turmoil when you're done. Or maybe that's just me, I don't know. But seriously, Jimmie likes ... things. What he did to his mother is the stuff of nightmares, but he's a serial killer so you have to expect crazy ... things. This story is D-I-S-T-U-R-B-I-N-G. HOWEVER, if you enjoy your books dark, thrilling, and love being hooked from the beginning to end, you may want to just step up to Jimmie and see what happens.

“I hate odd numbers more than mocha with extra cream. I despise odd numbers even more than I hate Halloween-a holiday for posers. Odd numbers are the worst, especially thirteen” - Jimmie

I recently tried to read American psycho and failed miserably. I was so excited to read it and when I eventually did I was bored out of my skull. I was a little apprehensive to pick up another serial killer novel. But I’m so glad I did.
I’ve not heard of this author prior to this little find. And what a gem it is. I was drawn into the main characters mind from the first page. Or was he drawn into mine? It’s a fast paced and to the point read, and written in an intimate way that makes you feel like you’re sat deep in conversation with the characters.
The story flits between two narratives, Jimmie the serial killer with mommy issues and florell the obsessive forensic psychologist hot on his trail. The further I got into the book the more I could see the similarities between the two characters. Both driven by obsession and a need to prove themselves.
The end was a bit anti climatic. But it was a quick read that I completed in a matter of hours and I really did enjoy every page. However, I won’t be rushing to read the sequels.

Just Things is the first book I have read by Erin Lee, but it will most certainly not be the last. I'm going to start out by saying, this book DOES end in a cliffhanger, but it's part of a series, so if that bothers you, then just wait until the entire series is out to read it.

Jimmie Putnam is not your average killer. He will make you feel for him, and sympathize with his reasoning. You start to see yourself understanding him, and then it's like WAIT A MINUTE, HES A SERIAL KILLER. He makes sure to remind you of that frequently too. He loves his THINGS, and you'll understand why, once you read the book.

I loved that this book not only had the viewpoint of the killer, but also had the perspective of the detective trying to catch him as well. We see the extremes, and her willingness to do anything to catch The elusive Ice Cream Man. He makes so many mistakes, but somehow manages to slip through the cracks every time.

I can't wait to read the next book in this series, and see what exactly Jimmie and Florel have been up to since we last seen them.

I give Just Things (Diary of a Serial Killer book 1) by Erin Lee 5 stars.

Jimmie is a collector. That is his hobby. He takes care of his Things. He treats them well. He buys them gifts and stuff to keep them happy. He is more than good to them. Most of them even have it better than they used to have before they met him. A lot of people collect things. His mamma collected figurines. See Jimmie is normal. Of course his Things just happen to be humans he keeps in freezers....

Florel works with the police. She has decided to go on this path ever since her twin was murdered while they were still in their teens. She has become obsessed with finding out about what really happened to her sister and this latest serial killer has made her become even more obsessed. Her coworkers think she just wants to be the best at everything. Her parents think it has been more than enough time to get over the death of her sister. Her boss thinks she's going over the edge. But she can't stop. She needs to catch this man who has been alluding everybody. But at what cost?

This is such a wonderful suspenseful horror read. I couldn't put the book down. There are times when you are utterly disgusted at Jimmie, but you can't look away. Yet you feel for him in a sick, twisted way. Forel, well, what is going on with her? You understand why she does what she does, even if it's a little over the top. Heck, you may just do the same if you were in her shoes. But is there more to her and why she is doing this?

Make sure you keep the lights on and grab you favorite teddy bear, because this book will definitely mess with you head. And you will love every second of it.

This book is superbly written - Erin Lee is very adept at storytelling, and this book kept me interested throughout. It's not my normal genre, but I enjoyed it immensely. I also learned a lot about sociopaths and serial killers. There was a lot of great information that came along with this chilling and disturbing story.

Jimmie Putnam is a Momma's boy. He views the world a little differently. When he encounters certain women, he finds himself wanting to add them to his collection of "Things." He has favorite things just like he has favorite flavors of ice cream. They are all - the Things and the ice cream - kept in freezers. He fancies himself a good master; he buys them nice things to wear and takes them out to keep them company.
Detective Florel, a women who lost her sister years ago, is working on the case of the "Ice Cream Killer." She keeps detailed records and is close to catching him.

This book starts at the beginning, with Thing one, and takes us all the way to Jimmie's most recent Thing. We see how Florel interprets each murder/disappearance. The most interesting thing about this book was to see the parallels between Jimmie and Florel. I am looking forward to seeing them meet face to face at some point in a future book.

Chilling and fascinating! Great job, Erin Lee!

This is a book is fantastic it dives into the psychic of the a serial killer and the FBI officer that is to close to the case. James William Putnam Jr. is a collector but what he collects is creepy and would give a sane person nightmares. The author gives you details of Jimmie's life from the his birth to why he turns into a killer. Jimmie always refers to the women as "just things" that he can do what he wants with them, and does. The things he does will be hard to read but is true to form for a mental ill person. Detective Florel Ross is very educated with several degrees, but no common since. Because of the kidnapping of her twin sister she has made it her duty to find the "Ice Cream killer". Hoping to put he won guilt to rest for her sisters death. She has psychological problems that believe it or hot help her see things others don't. The author takes you on the journey that shows you the when, where, and why these characters do what they do. Be prepared to be shocked and horrified over the things Jimmie and Florel will do just to get what they want

Just things by Erin Lee

Dark and twisty......
That's the best description, and I'm not talking Meredith Grey, Grey's Anatomy dark and twisty. I'm talking soul blackening, mind screwed, dark and twisty.

Most books will lead you thru by the serial killer some will use the detective. Erin lets them both take you for a ride. And what a ride it is. You won't know which way your leaning. You'll hope you come out of this story feeling happy feelings... you should rethink that. The author even warns you about that in the beginning.

I was amazed at the intensity of these characters. I was amazed at the depth I felt for them.

If you read this book you may not know how you feel about it when you finish but I guarantee you will be unable to put this book down. Prepare for all nighter and maybe some messed up dreams.

Do you like being inside the minds of the sick and twisted? Then Erin Lee wrote a perfect book for you with Just Things! I can't even explain how fun this book was to read... I know, I sound totally sick! This is just utterly fascinating to me! I can't wait to break into the second book!

We meet Jimmie... we get to go through his diary and learn all about his depravity through his own eyes. His obsession with things and why he's so attached to some and why he still keeps his others. We also meet Florel Ross, a detective who is just as obsessed as Jimmie... only she's obsessed with him, not his things.

I received an ARC of this book with the hope that I will leave an Unbiased Opinion. I was not required to leave a review, positive or otherwise, and my opinions are just that... my opinions.

Dive into the mind of a serial killer. This dark and fascinating read is about Jimmie the serial killer and his lovely Things, along with Florel the FBI agent trying to catch him. This one will keep you up at night, searching behind the curtains, looking under the bed, and constantly looking over your shoulder. This is Horror at it's absolute best. Scared the hell out of me. You will never think of Ice Cream quite the same after this one. If you are into dark horror that raises the hair on your arms, then this should be your next read. Wickedly amazing !!!! And the best part is, there will be more Jimmie !!!!!!

2 sides to every coin!!

Holy.....I picked this book up for two reasons. 1. My favorite murderous author recommended it and 2. I saw book 2 and thought, hmm interesting. I could NOT stop reading!! This book follows a serial killer and the profiler on the case. The similarities are crazy! What causes someone to kill? What causes someone to go into their minds? All I know is, I will never look at ice cream the same way ever again! If you like crime stories grab this one!!

Wow! I am blown away by Just Things. It's from the POV of the serial killer and draws you in on the very first page. I had a hard time putting it down. Just Things is NOTHING like I've read before.

You can't help but LIKE the killer and you know who it is from page one. The agent looking for him is fascinating as well. I cannot wait to read book 2.

Just Things, the first book in the Diary of a Serial Killer series, is a hard book for me to review. On the one hand, I was addicted to this story. On the other hand, it wasn’t quite everything I had hoped it would be. I know that many people will positively love this book, yet I’ve read so many books written from a serial killer’s point of view that I fear I’m becoming jaded. These stories will always scream out to me – I’m a disturbed individual in that way – yet it takes a lot for me to fall head over heels with the story. Although this one did have moments where I contemplated giving a four star rating, in the end I decided it was more of a three-point-five read that I opted to round down.

Just Things is told in a very interesting way. Books told from a serial killer’s perspective seem to be a dime a dozen these days, but this one does add more to it that simply following our killer as he acts out his deeds. In addition to finding out what happened, this one allows us to read the musings that occur within his diary. These diary entries vary between rambling details of his sanity to information regarding his past, coming in a range of formats including big meaty paragraphs to simple lists. It’s a very interesting way of telling a story.

Moreover, we get to experience the same thing when it comes to the agent working the case. We get to see details of their daily life in addition to diary entries and notebook information. The parallels drawn between the two are particularly interesting. Although I would have liked more in regards to the agent’s story (I’m a massive crime fiction fan, the tiny case details are my oxygen), I rather enjoyed the way in which we’re able to compare the two characters.

Throughout, we’re building towards the character’s crossing paths. We watch as the noose tightens, as things seem to slip out of control. We’re left with questions of what will come next, curiosities of how everything will come together. Then the ending – well, that just leaves you wanting to pick up the next book. Despite feeling rather sudden, it is a brilliant way to keep you interested in what comes next.

Honestly, it was a thoroughly interesting read. The way in which the story was told, the constant changes in how information was given, was particularly addictive. It’s one of those stories you need to finish in a single sitting, one of those stories you cannot put down. As I said, my three star rating is more so a reflection of how I’ve read so many of these kind of books and have now found myself with extremely high expectations.

Overall, it was a fun read, one that is worth picking up if you enjoy these kinds of stories.

Diving into the mind of a quirky twisted serial killer.

Detective Florel Ross is obsessed with solving the Ice Cream Killer serial murder case. Floral wants justice against her twin sister who was killed twenty years ago by a serial killer. She follows her gut and Sara’s guidance rather than following the rules. It’s that gut instinct that gets results.

While Jimmie stakes out his next victim Florel researches the victims background comparing it to other victims looking for a connection. To get in the mindset of a killer Florel has to become a hunter herself. As a profiler she collects and uses information about other killers habits. Her collection consists of evidence while Jimmie’s things are labeled as trophies.

Overall:
I discovered Erin Lee books from Mary Palmerin. Apparently they are collaborating together on a book. I figured I might as well get acquainted with Erin.
I love dark taboo reads about unique quirky characters. With that said I was expecting something a little more sinister and grueling given this is about a serial killer. I was expecting something more like Dexter where the lifestyle blended into the killings. I wasn’t hooked like I thought I would be.

I expected gore and the actual act of killing. Instead it’s a breakdown of Jimmie’s mindset and what makes him react. I thought more details would be provided on how he killed in the moment.
I appreciated the identities of each murder victim. The obituaries were an unexpected addition. Not sure I need that information, but it was provided. The cause of death was the most relevant aspect.

Erin illustrated Jimmie’s triggers well. She profiled Jimmie accordingly. What I still need was answers about his relationship with his mother and his ex-wife. I wasn’t impressed by Jimmie. I thought I would be creeped out by his ice cream cravings. He never gave me this weird vibe.

Wanting to understand why a person kills other people has always been a fascination of mine. When I saw this book about a guy who is a serial killer sharing his reasons for killing I knew I needed to read it. It’s not quite what I imagined. His voice isn’t really speaking to me. He spends more time bragging about himself as a smart killer. I’m sure this next comment will seem crazy but I thought I would be reading about the kill and where his mind was at during the kill. Instead Jimmie is focused on his Things.

Too much time was spent trying to define his personality giving reason for why he killed when I was interested in the kill itself. I wanted the gory details of his kills. Not just the obituary. Over half the book was spent profiling Jimmie. I wanted Dexter’s style.

The warning in Just Things really laid the cards out on the table and had me wondering if I would come out on the other side of this book unscathed. The journal scenes were quite a chilling glance into the mind and inner-workings of a killer. Picturing him and the things he had done was a bit startling.
I found it interesting to be in both the mind of the killer and the detective trying to catch him. They had similar methods and thought processes, which intrigued me. I was also able to see what drove the detective and how passionate she was about catching the Ice Cream Killer. My mind was whirring with possible connections right along with hers.
When the list of serial killers was being shared and yet another who was sentenced to death (#7) died in prison of natural causes, I was thinking right along the lines with Jimmie about how laughable the death penalty was in those cases.
I very much enjoyed the format of how this book was written. It was a very compelling story that sucked me right into its depths and kept me engaged the whole time. I was fascinated being inside both of their heads and being able to read their thoughts.
When Florel started to pondering her obsession with the Ice Cream Killer, it gave me a weird feeling deep in my gut about things. This was especially true when Florel had finally put all the pieces together and was ready to seek answers from Jimmie, but without telling anyone else. That was an incredibly risky move that had danger written all over it. I was completely hooked and wanted to know what would happen next.
And then that ending just left me hanging!! I need more and now!!
This is going to be a phenomenal series and I can't wait to read all of the installments, as well as any spin-offs.

What would it be like to be inside the mind of a serial killer, to know what’s going on in their heads to make them kill? What kind of horrific images would we be able to see and feel as if we are the ones experiencing this first hand? Just Things allows us to do just that. It takes us into the mind of a serial killer and gives you the views inside his head through his personal journal. The dictionary describes the pronoun of thing as an object that one need not, cannot or does not wish to give a specific name to. Things in other people’s eyes could be a collection- from finding rare antiques to something as mundane as stamps- but to Jimmie, his things are more complicated than most; to him, he’s an artist and his things are his masterpieces. But Jimmie is no ordinary artist, he’s the perfect serial killer. Erin Lee has taken what we know about the infamous killers and combined them to form Jimmie- if I were to write a book about what I know about every serial killer I have researched in my past, then Jimmie would be the person I wrote about. The relationship he has with his things is like what you would expect from any normal person, but with a disturbing and haunting twist; he invests everything into his things...

Just Things puts us into the mind of a serial killer and the detective obsessed with tracking him down.
Written in journal format, Lee gives us a perfect view into Jimmie's mind and why exactly he is a collector of "things". Dubbed the Ice Cream Killer because of the clothes he always nabs his "things" with, Detective Florel Ross is intent on finding out who he is before the case is taken away from her. Ross's obsession with the case sometimes takes us to some crazy places as she associates Jimmy to the death of her sister decades previous.
As far as Jimmie, in his mind's eye, he is taking good care of the women, he treats them well, he spends time with them and buys them little trinkets. He also lives in a world where everyone around him isn't too bright and because of his overconfidence, he brings us along his path through every turn in his journal. He is sure that he is never going to get caught.
Just Things is a fast paced, dark thriller that leaves you with disturbing thoughts from both ends of the spectrum. Lee has written a superb start to The Diary of a Serial Killer series and am anxious to see what comes next.

Wow, just wow. I'm not sure what I expected when I started reading this one, but I have to say that there were times I thought I may have bitten off more than I could chew. Parts of the story are a bit dry and feel more like a case study than anything else, but even those parts were oddly compelling. Jimmie is a deeply disturbed man, but at times, I still found myself empathizing with him - a disturbing thought on its own. This is certainly not one for the squeamish and the descriptive writing of Jimmie's collection and what he does with them is nothing short of chilling.
In addition to Jimmie telling us his story, we get profiler, Florel Ross, who has suffered loss and quickly becomes obsessed with catching the Ice Cream Man. Her narrative is almost haunting as she puts together clues and builds a profile of this horrific serial killer.
To sum it up, Just Things is a dark and disturbing look into the mind of an absolute nightmare of a human being, but be warned - there are no happy ending with the turning of the last page. The story doesn't end here, instead leaving plenty of questions that will hopefully be answered in the next book.

I made a point of not reading anything about this book before I started it. This is a very cleverly written story of a criminal profiler and a serial killer. They are similar and yet so different.
The book is written in a very interesting way, party diary, part case notes and in dual POV. I was hooked from the first page and could feel the character Jimmie, getting under my skin.
It is a real page turner and if it hadn't been for other commitments, I would have finished this book in one sitting. (A bit like my favourite ice cream)
The author has created something very unique within the pages of 'Just Things'. As I was reading, I found myself really thinking about the human condition and what makes us all tick.
A very thought provoking read in my opinion, and I look forward to the next book in the series; which I understand will be released soon.
There is nothing about this book I didn't love. It reminded me of something my dad used to tell me when I was growing up. The real monsters are the ones hidden in plain site. Take notice, you never know who is out there with you.

A very interesting read (and I mean that in the best way possible!!) Erin Lee has given her readers a little snippet into her upcoming book - Just Things (Diary of a Serial Killer Book One). The first 3 chapters of this book give a glance into the lives and minds of both main characters - Jimmie and the FBI Agent chasing him. I was hooked and cannot wait until the release of the full book to find out what is going to both of tortured souls!!

Erin Lee is a master storyteller and knows how to give just enough of a tease to leave her readers needing more!!! I can't wait to read more from her.

This was a creepy book but held my attention. It was a dark psychological thriller. The killer and the agent after him have similar personalities. They are both addicts. One is addicted to killing. God, some of the things his mother did to him was horrific. The agent is addicted to finding him so that she can get justice for her twin sister's death. I reaad this book in one sitting, because I was intrigued to figure out what was going to happen next. I picked out a few mental illnesses that kind of stood out to me. I can't wait until the next book comes out.

I highly recommend this book to people who like dark, psychological thriller books.

Just Things is the start to what I believe will be an amazing series of twists, turns, ups, downs - a real edge of your seat thrill ride. I absolutely love that the author chose to write this in Diary form and in alternate perspectives between the Killer and FBI agent. The author really gets into the mind of both and it is really interesting to see their thought process as the story is unveiled. I did not want to put this book down, I just had to see what was going to happen next. I cannot wait for the rest of the series. I wish I could give it more than 5 stars - It truly is an amazing read!!!
