The Next Wave of Stories in the Harbingers Series Arrives
Cycle 2 of the Harbingers series continues the story of four gifted strangers brought together to fight a growing darkness.
In Bill Myers's "The Revealing," the team finds themselves in Rome trying to retrieve the mystical spear Hitler once owned--the very spear that pierced Christ's side. This task will take them from hidden chambers inside the Vatican to a mysterious seaside cave with powers they could never expect.
Frank Peretti's "Infestation" unleashes a microscopic evil on the world that deceives, blinds, kills, then spreads. The Harbingers team must confront a monster bent on seducing and destroying mankind.
In "Infiltration" by Angela Hunt, the team is wounded and barely holding together. Forced to split up, they realize their investigations have led them into dangerous waters.
Alton Gansky's "The Fog" unleashes a supernatural mist unlike any other. There are vicious things in the fog that kill whatever they find. One team member realizes that the ultimate sacrifice may have to be made.
Bill Myers was born into a Christian home, and although as a child he became bored with Christianity, he decided at the University of Washington quote, to "make God my boss." Ironically, at the University his worst subject was writing. He claims to have prayed, and said that he would be able to do anything for God, except write. Even so, he has become a prominent Christian writer, and has a large amount of successful books and films to his credit.
Four of the biggest power names in the Christian Fiction Market have returned with a follow-up in this series where they come together to write one story from 4 perspectives. If you loved their first offering then you won’t be disappointed by the second. Just make sure you read the first before this!
Myers, Peretti and Gansky who are already well known for their supernatural bent towards ChriFi join Hunt who is better known for books that tug at the heartstrings. Their talents blend together to create a lyrical storyline that tugs at the imagination.
The diversity in their voices makes for some interesting character and story choices as you dig through this series. Using different writers really helps to individualize the characters, provide a fuller world to dive into and set you up for a plot that is ripe to be turned into a Netflix series.
I found myself ignoring the world around me as I became intent on wanting to stay with the quick pace the authors had sent and not wanting to miss a moment. It was funny in a way because as I’m reading a book I can obviously put it down any time and return but the energy they were creating was something I just didn’t want to leave out of fear it wouldn’t be the same when I came back. I had to know where they were going and what this journey was going to look like.
Thankfully the third in the series, Probing, comes out this December so I won’t have to wait long to see what will happen to this amazing set of characters. This series is just so different from what you’d expect from traditional ChriFi I was entranced by this mind bending plot.
The news of the release of this series excited me a lot. First, because it brings together writers whose works I have enjoyed before; and second, because the story promised mystery and suspense.
In the first book, it took me a bit to adapt to the different points of view in the narratives and, at times, it seemed to me that the characters were not the same when another writer described them. However, as the story progressed, I was able to enjoy the book and I completely immersed myself in it.
In this second part of the series, the mystery that appears in the first book only becomes deeper and deeper. There are many questions that have been solved, but others have appeared and left more questions than at the beginning.
I am glad that the characters have evolved and that each one, in its own way, have managed to connect with others and become a team. I'm so excited about the third book!
-I received a book from the publisher in exchange for my honest opinion, which I did-
If you love anything dealing with the supernatural from a Christian perspective, then you need to check out the Harbinger Series. Each cycle of the series takes the talents of well-known Christian authors and gives them the opportunity to expand on an ongoing series with very different characters point of view. Think of it, like a television series but in this case each author is adding their own spin to the continuing saga that is plaguing a unique set of characters from vastly different backgrounds. This cycle of the Harbinger series is the second one and incorporates the stories of The Revealing by Bill Myers, Infestation by Frank Peretti, Infiltration by Angela Hunt and The Fog by Alton Gansky.
In the series, Bill Myers writes as Brenda, a street-hustling tattoo artist who sees images of the future. Frank Peretti writes as the Professor, the atheist ex-priest who is ruled by logic. Angela Hunt writes as Andi, the professor's brilliant but geeky assistant who sees inexplicable patterns and Alton Gansky writes as Tank, the naive, big-hearted jock with a surprising connection to a healing power. So instead of the four talented authors writing one novella together, this comes together like a television series. There is an overarching storyline into which they each plug their own novellas, with each story written from our characters point of view.
In The Revealing, the team is gathered together under the direction of Bill Myers and they find themselves searching for the Spear of Destiny, which is coveted by those who seek it because it is said that those that weld the instrument that was used to plunge into the body of Jesus Christ on the cross still retains some supernatural properties and now the hunt it on for those who want to keep it hidden and those who want it found. In The Infestation by Frank Peretti, the team is thrust back into their pasts to deal with situations that were never resolved and this time an unseen fungus is attempting to infect the world without anyone knowing what is happening. When one of the team is affected will they be able to figure out a way to stop it before it kills them?
In Infiltration, the team discover a secret plot by those that they have been following are now all connected to their various discoveries and now they are being hunted one by one by something that no one can see but involves going back into their pasts before they were united as if they never met. They will have to convince each other that they do have a connection in some future event if they hope to succeed in not only keeping the team together but keeping them alive. Finally in The Fog, Alton Gansky takes our team to the top of a high rise building as a fog rushes in with the ability not only to kill on ground level but it begins to rise and with it the body counts continue to climb as well.
I received The Assault by Bill Myers, Frank Peretti, Angela Hunt and Alton Gansky compliments of Baker Publishing Group and Net Galley. I have absolutely LOVED this entire series and even though these individual books were written before, they are collected in groups of four known as the Cycle of the Harbinger series. Readers even get a sneak peek at the coming Cycle Three at the conclusion of this collection. These must be read in order not as individual stand alones otherwise as a reader, you would be completely lost by not understanding each characters motivation in working together to solve what is happening not only to them as individuals but also to the world in an effort to save them all. In this one, The Fog was my absolute favorite. There is just something creepy about a fog that can rise until it claims every last person it touches. 5 out of 5 stars again in my opinion and can't wait to read the next one.
The Assault is a Christian supernatural suspense that will have the reader on the edge of their seat. It is the second book in the Harbingers series. I would recommend reading the first book Invitation as the action continues from there. Once again the book has four unique stories with the focus on four different lead characters. Each story is written by a different author - Bill Myers, Frank Peretti, Angela Hunt and Alton Gansky - but they follow on chronologically. The fight against the forces of evil continues. Life is so much more than we can see. When we feel overwhelmed by things we cannot alter we need to remember "God wins in the end." The battle is not ours but the Lords. "Oh, Lord Jesus, don't let 'em win." God is on our side. The question is, are we on His? It is important to listen to the voice of God. "God desires slaves; you deserve freedom." This is the voice of the enemy. It reminds the reader of when Jesus was in the wilderness for forty days and the devil tempted Him. We must keep our focus on God. When we face our fears, we are calling not only on our faith in God but on our own inner reserve. "Bravery is defined by what you do, not what you feel." There are times when we really have to 'do it afraid.' There is power in numbers. When we join with others to fight against evil, we are stronger together than alone. The unique bond of friendship is shown within the novel. The Assault is a gripping read, terrifying at times. Do not read it alone nor at night! A marvellous series. I cannot wait for book three. I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.
The Assault is the second installment in the Harbingers series. The series begins with The Invitation, where all of the characters (The Professor, Andi, Tank, Brenda and Daniel) are introduced as they work as a team to fight an unknown evil. Bill Myers, Frank Peretti, Angela Hunt, and Alton Gansky each write a novella within each book in the series. This book is every bit as exciting as the first installment.
Bill Myers starts out with The Revealing. The team is in Rome at the Vatican searching for a mystical spear that Hitler once stole. As a side note, I looked up the history on this and found it all to be quite interesting along with this novella, which is based on some truth about the spear.
Frank Peretti then tells about the Infestation--a microscopic plague that is spreading through the world to kill humankind. The team has to identify what this substance is, how it works, and try to figure out how to stop it.
Angela Hunt writes about the Infiltration through the eyes of Andi. This wounded team needs a respite but it doesn't look like they are going to get one. . .especially Andi who isn't quite feeling like herself yet but doesn't want to worry the rest of the team.
Alton Gansky then tells about The Fog. The team led by Tank must deal with a supernatural fog filled with vicious monsters unlike anything ever seen before. Tank knows he must make sacrifice to stop the fog and save his friends and others.
This series has me on the edge of my seat as I turn pages to find out what happens to everyone next. I can't wait until the third book, The Probing comes out in December. This series is written in a fast paced format sort of like a television series. I am enjoying the characters and the interesting plot lines. Only one character of the main four professes to be a Christian. I hope as I continue reading his faith makes a difference to the other team members. Knowing this group of writers and their other work, I think it will. I highly recommend this series and this book if you like fast paced Christian fiction.
I received a copy of this book from Bethany House. I was not required to write a positive review in exchange for the book.
On a scale of cotton candy to Brussels sprouts, The Assault is stuffed mushrooms. Never underestimate the deliciousness of fungi crammed with tasty herbs and cheese. Tiny adventures packed in each bite.
[free copy received. opinions my own]
The Assault is a collection of four novellas that build an over-arching, connected story to protect the world from an unknown, malicious possibly otherworldly force that attacks through multi-verses, plagues, other humans, and fog monsters. Each author write from the perspective of one character on the Harbingers team. Each novella adds to the story. The Harbingers are Brenda (a snappy black tattoo artist with visions of the future), the professor (athiest ex-priest), Andi (geeky, pattern-focused assistant to the professor), and Tank (a jock with healing powers). But, most importantly, kid Daniel, who is the wild card of the team, has imaginary friends and senses good and bad on people. They're a quirky group to be sure.
I loved how these authors teamed up to create a story. They explain it as a TV series with different episodes, and I think that comparison is a perfect one. The imagination involved in creating this series of events kept me on my toes, but a lot of it felt scarily believable. Meanwhile, each novella reflected the author's unique story telling, but somehow despite the different styles, the connected story moved forward.
Out of the four novellas, I think I liked the final one the best because I think Alton Gansky did a great job of pacing along with description (he corrected an erroneous belief I had about an important detail of one of the characters). I definitely enjoyed The Assault, and I absolutely recommend it. The best part is that so far there are 3 cycles of the Harbingers!
The Assault: Cycle Two of the Harbingers Series by Frank Peretti, Angela Hunt, Bill Myers, Alton Gansky is a highly recommended second installment of the group-story.
This volume contains the second collection of four interconnected stories in the Harbingers Series that started with Invitation. This is an ongoing series created by these Christian authors with additional stories already available. In the series a team of four widely diverse people join together to use their individual skills.
The author's set up two rules for their collaboration: Rule #1 Each author would write as one of the characters in the series: Bill Myers's character is Brenda, the street-hustling tattoo artist who sees images of the future. Frank Peretti's character is the professor, the atheist ex-priest ruled by logic. Angela Hunt's character is Andi, the professor’s brilliant but geeky assistant who sees inexplicable patterns. Alton Gansky's character is Tank, the naïve, big-hearted jock with a surprising connection to a healing power. Rule #2 They would write the stories like a TV series with an overarching storyline. The series part would be their individual stories, novellas, written from their character’s point of view.
The stories in Cycle 2 of the Harbingers series continues the story of four gifted strangers brought together to fight a growing darkness. From the synopsis: In Bill Myers's "The Revealing," the team finds themselves in Rome trying to retrieve the mystical spear Hitler once owned--the very spear that pierced Christ's side.
I enjoyed this second installment of the series a bit more than the first, probably due simply to knowing the characters already and what they are facing and also understanding what how the authors are collaborating on the series. Additionally, I also felt that this cycle of stories was stronger than the first, but, again, they are building on the previous stories.
As I noted before there are pros and cons to this collaboration. Since these are four individual short stories are written like a TV series with the same characters, each story stands alone while also working with the others to create a larger overwhelming story arch. This makes it easy to quickly read one story and know the next one will be a new adventure from a different character's point-of-view. This is also the potential downfall of the series. Because it is written as an ongoing series there is no concluding resolution and the character growth is limited.
In the end the real questions for readers are: Do you like episodic ongoing stories? How much time are you willing to invest in an ongoing series? I'm not even sure about my answer to these two questions. So far I do like the series and the stories. On the other hand I am also growing weary of authors making an ongoing series that lasts too long and reading books with no real conclusion. I have liked the first two, but I do wonder how many I am willing to read to reach the end. (I am positive the number is much small than it used to be due to the abuse of making an ongoing series by some authors in the past.)
'The Assault' picks up where 'The Invitation' left off. Four stories told from four different view points that all blend and weave together. the author's refer to them as episodes in a series, much like a sitcom. I'd forgotten how much paranormal/sci-fi elments there were in this series. It was a leap from what I've been currently reading and it took a bit to get my head in the game. The dying animals with no eyes thing is still alive and well in this book as well. I'm certain it plays into the bigger picture with 'The Gate' (again is back, sorta) but I've not yet been able to piece it all together. We started back out with Brenda, and by extension Daniel, in 'The Revealing'. This story is a followup on a scroll that was found which The Professor sent to an old mentor at the Vatican. Honest, this story left me feeling a lot confused and a little lost. It was lacking in plot to the point that the message that was attempting to be conveyed was lost on me. They dig through a couple of catacombs, end up on a beach with eyes thugs chasing them and end up in an ever changing house that merges with the multiverse. I think they figured out what they were supposed to with the Spear of Destiny, but I can't be certain since I was predominately lost in the shuffle.
Episode two, 'Infestation', takes up with the Professor and the team back to Florida where the unexplainable deaths all first began. Being back on firm ground that I recognize helped to kick up the understanding. This short episode got to the root of, and explained so much of, what has been going on with the animals. The one thing I'm not loving with the shortened story-lines is the lack of ability to create real depth to the plot. Things feel entirely too easy. Oh we need this, blam in the nick of time (without much time mind you) we have it. It's just slightly too tidy in a plot that could easily fill a coliseum. Moving on to episode three, 'Infiltration', where we catch up with Andi after they have managed to escape the reemergence of the fungus. Andi has a lot of things to deal with. Yes the infiltration is done but there's the emotional scars to deal with. And of course, getting involved with a delicious looking psychiatrist proves to be disastrous for them all. This was by far my favorite episode in this book. With more a focus on the group trying to research The Gate and Andi dealing with life it's the most involved. There's no awkward need for bizarre heroics which makes it easier to follow along.
The final episode, 'The Fog, in the book comes back from Tank's perspective. This episode was more about emotion and drama than physicality like the others. There were no exotic locations, no 'chasing' the bad guys. More the bad guys chasing them. And there is definitely a sense that someone is directing the teams movements. Providing them tickets and accommodations and much needed funds. Tank takes one for the team and I loved this episode through his voice. The only thing that was truly lacking, I'm sure due to lack of space for additional word count, was a thorough understanding of what he was thinking, doing, feeling and especially seeing. All told this second installment is just as good as the first and here's to hoping I can get my hands on the next one!
I was provided a complimentary copy of this book by NetGalley. I was not compensated for this review and all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own. I was not required to write a positive review.
The Christian RPG--as I call it--is back for another round. Four of the biggest Christian authors of our time come together to write their characters' stories in a way that resembles a TV drama. With one novella per author, this next "season" has given us four more episodes in this strange, compelling supernatural story.
These are a fun escape from reality, and I love nothing more than to see one of my favorite authors (Frank Peretti) interact with other well-known Christian novelists. The odd team of gifted individuals struggle to discover the evil forces working against them. Floating orbs, eyeless creatures, a dangerous fungus, and mutant fog all do their best to stop the team, and none of it makes sense. Each episode we run into something new and bizarre, adding to the ever-increasing list of questions we hope to see answered. For the genre and format in which this book was written, the meandering plot works, even if we get the feeling that even the authors might not know exactly what's going to happen next.
Depending on the author, the writing style changes drastically. Bill Meyers has a clipped, short sentence style that cuts description and shortens dialogue until you feel like the characters are out of breath talking. He also tends to write slightly unrealistic, to where your suspension of disbelief snaps. Peretti and Hunt are both my favorites, their writing clear and gripping. I'm easily able to picture what's going on and follow the story. Gansky I haven't decided on yet. He does an overwhelming amount of Telling instead of Showing, but that's largely because of the internal monologue of his particular character, who likes to explain what he's seeing in a way that makes him sound like he's talking directly to you. The struggle comes when Tank (Gansky's character) spends a paragraph or more explaining "That's what she thinks, or that's what he does all the time. This is normal for her" etc when we've been reading about these characters for a whole novel -- yes, we know that's what she's like, now tell us the story. Both Gansky and Meyers seem to be more loners in their storytelling, writing what they want to write about and not bouncing their plots off others' as much, while Peretti and Hunt seem to flow from one to the next.
It's a compelling story with a definite weirdness about it, but the style and uniqueness of it is too good to pass up.
Things to Watch Out For: Sex: none Language: a Christian character will use God's name on occasion in his thought process, claiming it's in reverence. p-1 pg 123; "lord"-1 pg 102; "good lord"-1 pg 109; "Madre de Dios"-1 pg 130; G-2 pg 132 Violence: moderate; one character sees multiple people die, including children, in a cloud of fog; a graphic drawing prophecies someone's death; Drugs: a character smokes Nudity: none Other: the topic of hypnosis comes up with mixed opinions on whether it's a valid technique to use on people; many spiritual, paranormal, or supernatural themes throughout the book; prophetic drawings tell the future; a child can see angels and demons;
So this story was a little different than what I usually read. I’m not a fan of suspense (which is why there is probably only four other books like that in my collection) as I have found that with suspense, the author is so busy trying to create it that important things like character development and romance are neglected. But when I saw that this had a supernatural angle to it, I thought I would go ahead and give it a try, despite it being the second book in the series.
Bill Myer’s episode is what we begin with first, and starts us from the perspective of the tattoo artist, one of the four unique people this series revolves around (and no, they’re not even close to X-Men) who find themselves trying to find the spear that pierced Jesus’s side and end up in a house crazier than Wonderland. I could say it was because of just plunging right into the story without having read the first book that led to my initial dislike, but I would be lying. I just really don’t like Bill Myer’s writing. I have only read one other book by him, and what turned me off then turns me off now. A muddled plot that is really boring, poor character development, and, yes, it may be minor but still bugs me, one dirty word: p***.
After suffering through Myer’s part, I was praying really hard Peretti would not disappoint. And thank God, he didn’t. One thing he does, which a lot of people don’t do: write some solid character development. And he starts us with the crusty, ex-priest, atheist professor. Good writing and a plot that actually deserves the name “suspense” keep you turning those pages. And might I add, the element of faith was better presented too.
The third part is written my Angela Hunt (who I do like after reading her novel, Egypt’s Sister). It’s a bit of a lag after Frank Peretti’s engaging tale and an annoying professor you were silently rooting for. Andi, the professor’s assistant, is who we now focus on. Not bad, but still a drop from the previous part.
Fourth is by Alton Gansky who switches us to Tank, the Christian ex-football player, and a supernatural fog that invades the city. The story starts off slow, but builds up the further you go, and gives us a nice climatic scene at the end and a hero’s sacrifice.
After all was said and done, I actually did enjoy the story, minus Myer’s part. So I’ll continue to follow it. While it has its ups and downs, the premise and characters are engaging enough for me to want to continue. And the element of faith, though subtle, is a driving point for each character’s journey.
Verdict: Definitely not a must-have, but it’s a decent story for suspense lovers and those needing something to read.
(I received a free copy of the book from the publisher and author in exchange for an honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.)
The second installment in the Harbingers series brings the team into even more danger and turmoil while testing their faith in each other and a higher power.
Bill Myers starts things off this round with The Revealing, where the team has traveled to Rome to find a mystical spear that is thought to have been used by Hitler and as well as have pierced the side of Christ during the crucifixion. The team has to travel through hidden chambers to avoid those sent to keep them from accomplishing their goals. Frank Peretti continues the story in Infestation. In this installment, the team has to tackle a monster that is unlike anything anyone has ever seen before. In Infiltration, Angela Hunt takes the team to rest after being attacked and wounded. Finally, Alton Gansky’s The Fog brings forth a supernatural mist that attacks anything in comes in contact with, including the team and those they are trying to protect.
In another interesting compilation, these four authors are brought together to do what they do best, tell supernatural thrilling stories that will leave the audience thirsting for more. You have to enjoy the paranormal and supernatural to enjoy this book. The authors all write with such creative power in their characters and how they tell their stories it will bring everything together as if it isn’t unbelievable. For some, this might not be considered a Christian book with the way it gets so dark, but there is a spiritual element to it that the audience will resonate with. These four authors are the top in Christian supernatural fiction and bringing them together gives a tale like no other. Each author gives his/her unique voice and writing style to a different character that brings the whole group together and ties the different elements of the story in a nice little bow. If this were another set of authors, I don’t believe it would work. These four have found a way to come together and weave a story that is worth reading and waiting for more to come. I recommend this to readers that enjoy a deep, dark, supernatural thriller that will test the limits of your imagination and leave you aching for more.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. The views and opinions expressed within are my own.
Picking up where cycle one, Invitation, left off, Bill Myers sends the team to Rome. Professor McKinney, Brenda Barnick and her adopted son Daniel, Bjorn “Tank” Christenson, and Andi Goldstein find themselves in the midst of danger unlike anything on this planet. Animals have been dying without cause, and now the investigators have a clue—a scroll the Vatican was very interested in. But it’s hard to know who to trust when taxi drivers take you where you need to go, rather than asking for your preferred destination.
A few months after their trip to Rome, author Frank Peretti brings the team to Florida, where fish and birds have been dying again by no obvious means. But it’s not the deaths that gathered them all: it’s Andi. She’d been hospitalized because she was seeing things and hearing voices. A search for the cause of Andi’s ailment leads the team to floating orbs, near-death experiences, and an organization called The Gate.
Angela Hunt picks up the story a few days after the resolution of Peretti’s novella and deals with the aftermath. For once, the team has a chance to study the circumstances and learn how to get one step ahead of The Gate and its plans for world domination. But can they truly learn as much as they need to if Andi continues to struggle with the effects of the death and destruction around her? As she studies the orb they collected in their previous encounter, she also spends time with a therapist, trying to get back to her normal self. Unfortunately, the orb she’s been studying hasn’t been dormant, and the situation promptly escalates.
Finally, writer Alton Gansky brings this collection to a close by taking the team to a fancy retirement party in California. Their purpose there soon becomes apparent as fog fills the streets and monstrous creatures prey on the lives of those unlucky enough to be at ground level. The team must race against the fog to find its connection to The Gate before the creatures reach the fiftieth floor of the building. It’s a nail-biter right to the end.
Four of my favourite suspense authors have again delivered up a collection of inter-connected stories that were all I was hoping for! Filled with mind-bending supernational scenes, action packed moments, and even bits of humour thrown in throughout, "The Assault" feels like an even stronger accomplishment than the first cycle of the series.
By now, I have a good understanding and feel for the different characters, and am greatly enjoying how each novella is moving the story forward. The premise of the books, with authors writing each novella from a different point of view from each character, continues to be a winning formula, and truly the comparison to a TV series is fitting. The crisp writing of each author and the suspense-filled scenes combine to make you feel like you truly are watching the story unfold on the screen. And I think what I like most is the fact that because each author is putting their own spin on their novella, I start each one not quite knowing what is coming. Nothing makes me happier than being surprised by a good story, and such is the case with this collection. I also continue to enjoy the unfolding fight between good versus evil, and the authors have given evil unexpected faces indeed! It would be hard for me to choose which one of these novellas I enjoyed the most, as each had something to appreciate. But I can say that I came to the end of the last one eager to see what lies in store for this intriguing cast of characters.
I greatly enjoyed this second cycle of the Harbingers series, and am confident that if you enjoyed the first cycle like I did, then you are going to love this one too! I award this book a solid rating of 4 out of 5 stars.

Cycle Two of the Harbingers Series by Bill Myers, Frank Peretti, Angela Hunt, and Alton Gansky

Pub Date 01 Aug 2017
I am reviewing a copy of The Assault through Bethany House Publishers and Netgalley:
Disclaimer: The Assault is the second cycle in the Harbingers series, I recommend reading The Invitation first.
In the first story The Revealing by Bill Myers the team is in Rome trying to find the mystical spear that Hitler had once owned, the spear that had pierced Christ's side. They find themselves in the catacombs under the city, and the hidden chambers of the vaticans, and finally in a mysterious seaside cave. The cave has powers that no one expected.
The first story draws you in, and does not let you go, making you want to continue on without stopping.
In the second story of this cycle Indestation by Frank Peretti a microscopic evil is unleashed on the world, an evil out to destroy humanity. In this story the team finds themselves having to confront a monster out to kill mankind.
The third story is The Infiltration by Angela Hunt, the team finds themselves wounded and splif up. The team is having to see a psychiatrist which Andi does not like.
In the final story of this cycle is Alton Ganksy's a supernatural mist unlike anything other is unleashed. A fog that can kill anything they find.
In this book four prolific Christian authors come together to create a stories that remind us of how good triumphs over evil. Bill Myers, Frank Peretti, Angela Hunt and Alton Ganksy have prolific careers in their own right and are amongst the top authors in the Christians genre.
I read the first cycle and knew that I wanted to read the rest in this series. I really like the format of four different authors writing from four different characters point of view. The authors describe each story like an episode in a TV show and I think that is very fitting. I like that you get to know each of the main characters on a deeper level since you hear from each of them. I also like that there are four shorter stories, so it reads quite quickly. The premise still intrigues me enough that I want to read the rest of the series as it continues to come out.
Copy of book provided by Bethany House Publishers and NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
The Assault: Cycle Two of the Harbingers Series is written by Frank Peretti, Angela Hunt, Bill Myers, Alton Gansky. This is the sequel to The Invitation. It contains four stories that are connected. It continues with the four member team of very diverse individuals
Bill Myers writes as Brenda, a street-hustling tattoo artist who sees images of the future. In the Revealing the team travels to Rome to search for a spear that is supposedly the spear that pierced Christ. The visit to the Vatican was mysterious. Frank Peretti writes as the Professor, the atheist ex-priest who is ruled by logic. He is the most unlikable character. This one deals with a fungus and issues from the team’s past. Angela Hunt writes as Andi, the geeky assistant to the professor who sees inexplicable patterns. She also has a golden retriever that I fell in love with. In Infiltration the team has to realize they are together for a reason to fight the evil. Alton Gansky writes as Tank, the naive, big-hearted jock with a healing power and who has a crush on Andi. The Fog read like a movie. It was so descriptive you felt like you were in the building with them. I am enjoying the series and look forward to the next installment. The characters are enjoyable and the battle of good versus evil engaging. I recommend the series.
I received this book from Netgalley. I was not required to write a positive review. You can see my full review at More Than a Review dot com where I rate the level of sex, violence, language and drug/alcohol use in books.
The world is going crazy and only they can see it...
Super creepy! Supernatural! Yep, just another chilling jaunt with the Harbingers! Each of the paperback books contains what they call a 'cycle', meaning four novellas – one from each author. I picked up the first one because I've been a fan of both Frank Peretti and Bill Myers since I was a kid and devoured half a dozen books a week. I was hooked by book one so when I got the chance to read the second cycle called The Assault, episodes 5-8, I grabbed it.
Definitely a darker series, book two is even spookier and delves further into the horror aspect of the intertwined storyline. One of the things that I liked about these stories is actually what the authors established as Rule #2 for their collaboration, each author writes a novella that builds on the previous one, all characters are present but each story is told from a single perspective. As each epsiode builds on the previous one it has been quite interesting to follow the four adult characters as they begin to understand, and even find a grudging respect, for each other. They are starting to form a true team as they must work together and utilize each person's strengths and gifts.
If you are a fan of any or all of the four authors, Bill Myers, Frank Peretti, Angela Hunt, Alton Gansky, or you enjoy Christian horror/supernatural suspense stories, you've definitely got to try The Assault and its predecessor!
(I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are entirely my own.)
This is book 2 in the series. It needs to be read in order!
Picking up immediately after the events in the first book, I was glad to see that the fast-paced style that was the first book returned with this one. I'll admit though, that it took me longer to read it than the first one, mainly because I wasn't in a reading mood. That said, once I got into the book, I found it hard to put down.
I love the way that each novella builds on the previous one. They are not separate stories that could stand on their own like so many novellas I've read do. The characters and the stories are so intertwined, that when switching from one story to the next, I sometimes didn't even notice that I'd switched.
I am really enjoying getting to know Brenda, the professor, Andi, and Tank. I love how they continue to grow and change.
Overall, I enjoyed this book.
I received a copy for free from the publisher to review. I was not required to like the book, only give my honest opinion. My thoughts and opinions are my own.
Recommended to fans of Frank Peretti, Bill Myers, suspense
The Assault: Cycle Two of the Harbingers series was just as strange and spooky as the first cycle, maybe even more so. These stories were hard to put down and had me reading them as fast as I could. They were immensely compelling.
In The Revealing, the gang is in Rome and tasked with finding the (real) Spear of Destiny. I was extremely intrigued with this story. So interesting!
Well, Frank Peretti certainly knows how to write a truly chilling story! In Infestation there's more trouble with the animals... and it seems to be escalating quickly.
Infiltration was a bit of a slower read for me, but still very interesting. Most of the gang's researching and trying to find out more about The Gate. Andi is studying a mysterious orb and seeing a psychiatrist to help deal with fallout from the previous episode.
The Fog starts off a little slow, but then...WHAM... the action picks up and my goodness... it was STRESSFUL! I couldn't read it fast enough.
I am fully invested in these characters' stories and can't wait to start Cycle Three!
When I read the first in this series ,I was pulled in and had mixed feeling about the stories due to the focus on the Paranormal. I was intrigued by the depth of the characters. I decided to read this second in the series hoping it would not be so much like science fiction. I can tell you that I couldn't wait to be finished, because it felt more like a monster movie or aliens from outer space. I don't care for Science Fiction, but love Peretti's other books. The only thing I can say that is positive about the story is the portrayal of the four characters. Having said this, I will say I will not read any future books in this series. If you like aliens and science fiction, you'll love the book. There haven't ever been many books I dislike as much as I did this one.
Disclaimer: I received a free copy of the book from the Bethany House, a division of Baker Publishing. No review, positive or otherwise, was required; all opinions are my own.
This book was amazing, incredible writing and compelling to read with entertaining fun story that had a lot of turn, and full of surprising that make you wondering what will be happening next and with all the quality of the book was very encouraging me and very hard to put it down. The story of was writing from four author with they are one of the characters in this series. Bill Myers would write as Brenda, The street-hustling tattoo artist who sees images of he future. Frank Peretti would write as the professor, the atheist ex-priest ruled ruled by logic. Angela Hunt would write as Andi, the professor’s brilliant but geeky assistant who sees inexplicable patterns. Alton Gansky would write as Tank, the naïve, big-hearted jock with a surprising connection to a healing power. I highly recommend to everyone must to read this book. “ I received complimentary a copy of this book from Bethany House for this review “.
The Assault - what can you say about 5 Novella Cycle II of the Harbinger Series - it is about what we would call the Supernatural - four people who somehow miraculously and we know when we say miraculously we mean (GOD) - then they find they all have a Supernatural gift and thus the adventure began - and right now there are 13 Novellas this is showing 5-8 where you have a girl who sees into the future an atheist who use to be a priest, a person who sees unexplainable patterns, and a jock with healing powers, you have a fungus that tries to take over the earth. While you have the spear that was used for putting in the side of CHRIST, being sent into the past, killer fog - I mean how can you miss out on all of that? it is intense, mind thrilling. I received a copy of this book from the Publisher and Netgalley; all the opinions expressed in this review are all my own.

Book two of this captivating series is here! Taking all four authors and all the stories from the first book, the saga continues without loosing momentum or my interest in this second book. The four strangers from book one, are working together even more in this book. Their characters are growing, and the story is getting stronger and Light is getting brighter as the darkness and risk to fight it increase. I seriously can't wait to read the next installment of this series. It's so much fun have these authors working together in such a strong, gripping series that would make a seriously kick'n TV series.
My copy came from Bethany House and Net Galley. I appreciate it greatly, but wasn't required to leave a positive review. My thoughts are all my own, as are my opinions of this book.
Book 2 in the Harbinger series. Four Christian authors, each one in charge of writing from one character's point of view, one story per author, 4 stories per book. I found this book more coherent than the first one. The stories were more interrelated in this book, which made it an easier read. The odd team receives plane tickets, cash for daily needs, and for places to stay, but the source of the bounty is unknown. The fact they are guided into doing good gives them the hope that their financial backers are on the right side. Each must use his or her unique talents in the search for a solution to each issue they encounter. There are some real challenges in this set of stories, and the entire book will keep you reading and wanting more.
My opinions about this second set of stories are pretty much the same as my opinions about the first set of stories except I enjoyed these stories a little less. I’m not personally a fan of horror and the stories in this book seemed to head more in that direction.
This is a book of 4 short stories written by 4 different authors featuring the same characters and supernatural world. While they each worked as individual short stories, they didn’t really come together with one larger series arc. There is no clear path as to where this series is going. Everything is very reactive, nothing is proactive.
Second installment of the Harbingers series. The series is an interesting concept - four writers writing books where each author writes a short story from the POV of one of the four main characters. The characters felt more fleshed out in The Assault, more like real people, although there was at least one time that shows potential continuity issues with this style of writing. Overall, a good collection of exciting stories.
This is the second unique novel created by these four authors (first book is The Invitation). Overall, I found this book to read very slowly. It never really grabbed my attention. In addition, the four different writing styles, following the same group of characters, broke my train of thought. Some fans of Ted Dekker, Frank Peretti, and their co-authors may find this read enjoyable, I found it lacking in depth.
There is also some crude language which may offend some readers. Please read with discretion.
I've decided that this book has just gotten too strange for me. I finished the first book with mixed feelings on if I liked it or not. I do enjoy some science fiction so I was intrigued to see where this book would take us. About halfway through and I've decided I'm just not enjoying it and it is holding me back from reading other books on my TBR. It has gotten too weird for me with the fungus causing hive mentality in those it infects. I rarely give up on a book part way through but this time I will.
I felt lost, especially during the first novella 'The Revealing'. I haven't read Cycle One, but I was hoping to find my feet at some point during this read.
The second novella, 'Infestation' is better. The third, 'Infiltration', hangs together well, but feels too plodding for supernatural suspense. The fourth, 'The Fog' is quite scary but ok.
I just felt it's not made clear what is going on, especially about the special powers of some characters. And the characters don't really develop.
