From the author of bestselling debut NED'S CIRCUS OF MARVELS… Roll up, roll up, and prepare to be AMAZED AGAIN by Ned and the marvellous, magical, monstrous flying circus!
Ned and his family are trying to be ordinary except for the small fact that they AREN’T. AT ALL. Because on the run up to Christmas everything is ruined when all the world’s gold goes missing, along with its leading scientists. Which doesn't really have anything to do with Ned… until it does. When an oily thief and his pet monster turn up at Ned's door, Ned finds himself on the run again… and racing to find out what this new villain wants.
Meanwhile, in the shadows, a machine with a mind of its own vies for power, and mysterious men in grey suits are watching the Circus of Marvels' every move. Together with his best friend Lucy, his clockwork mouse and his shadow, Ned must use his growing magical powers to try to uncover a secret that could end them all…
After the fight in the first book, Ned's and his family finally reunited. They hope to live a happy life as a normal person. But, the fate are not on their side. His parents has been kidnapped. And this situation forced Ned to take action..
This second book is back with full of actions. Even from the start. I love how Ned's parents keep him in a good condition and perfected his skills with training even in a real world.
The mastermind is very cunning. He made a very good strategy to make sure everything is following his plan. He made friends turn to foe. He has my respect on the intellectual wise.
The ending feel a bit in hurry. A bit rushed. Everything is dump in one action. If it take a bit slow pace it will be perfect.
I believe this is a great book for anyone who’s looking for a fantasy adventure with more twists and turns than a maze! With that being said I do think that it’s a very specific genre, almost steam-punky while still being be very fantasy based, said genre is definitely for a set audience. If you are not a part of that audience this book will not have the same hard-hitting effect that I believe it to hold.
With all that being said; this book is a great example of storytelling at its finest. I still don’t think I can rate it the solid 5 stars that I do actually think it deserves. This is due to the few plot holes that leave me wondering why the characters aren’t taking the easier route. (4.5 stars if I could!)
I think this book has amazing potential to become the next Harry Potter or Percy Jackson, with an amazing main character, a perfect villain and a wide range of settings. So I say; read ahead of you think this book I have described is perfect for you, because I’m sure it will always leave you wanting more!
Part of my difficulty with this book is my fault. It's the second book in a series, and I haven't read the first. Sometimes it doesn't matter, but here there are so many characters, I sometimes found it hard to catch up. There's a lot of action going on too. I'm actually a fan of slowing down for character development, but I think fans of fast-paced middle grade fantasy will really like this. I will have to read the first book, and then maybe revise my feelings on this one.
