As the days lengthened and light took on an intense spring shimmer, silver wattles were in flower, stippling gold across hillsides, mountain duck and wood duck had taken to tree nests, and crows and magpies called and squabbled as they busily raised broods. Up in our sheltered paddocks, lambing was in full swing, though at this time of pre-dawn the ewes had to share fresh pasture with a mix of kangaroos, walleroo, wallaby and the odd stolid wombat.
