Baya iyi, son derece besleyici bir edebiyat inceleme kitabı. Öncelikle Adam Kirsch tarafıdan hangi kitapların mercek altına alındığını yazayım: Orhan Pamuk ‘Kar’, Haruki Murakami ‘1Q84’, Roberto Bolano ‘2666’, Chimamanda N. Adichie ‘Amerikana’, Mohsin Hamid ‘Gönülsüz Köktendinci’, Margaret Atwood ‘Antilop ve Furya’, Michel Houellebecq ‘Bir Adanın Olabilirliği’, Elena Ferrante ‘Napoli Romanları’.

Pamuk’un ‘Kar’ romanı zaten edebiyatımızın bir parçası olduğundan, onu bir kenara koyarsak diğer incelenen eserlerden Houellebecq’in romanı dışında hepsinin Türkçesini bulmak mümkün. Bunu belirtiyorum çünkü bu incelemenin anlaşılması adına romanların okunması gerektiğini düşünüyorum. Okumadığım birkaç romanın incelemesinde kavrayışım daha uzakta seyretti. Eserlerin çoğunu okumuş olmamın bana inanılmaz iyi bir etkisi oldu inceleme adına. Kirsh bu yapıtlar üzerinden küresel bir romanın ‘ne’liğini ortaya koyuyor. Böyle bir şeyden bahsedilebileceğini, fakat bu yeni gidişatın edebiyatın niteliğinden ne gibi tavizler verilmesini zorunlu kıldığını araştırıyor. Diğer yandan ulusal edebiyatın kabul edilebilirliğinin gelecekte içine düşebileceği zorlu durumları haber veriyor. Küreselleşmenin edebiyatta yarattığı tahribata dikkat çekiyor. Çok keyif aldım. Herkesin okuması gerektiğini düşündüğüm bir inceleme kitabı. Elbette bana göre eserlerin önce çoğunluğunu bilmek ve üzerine düşünmüş olmak gerekiyor. Zaten okur olarak bu eserlerin dünya okuru elindeki yolculuğu hakkında düşündüğümüz şeylerin toplu olarak masaya yatırıldığını görüyoruz böylelikle. Benim üzerinde düşündüğüm şeylerdi karşıma çıkanlar. Mutlaka listenize ekleyin.

Edebiyatı çok sevmek kuram okumayı da beraberinde getiriyor sanırım.
Hem hacim hem anlatım olarak okuması kolay olduğu kadar zevkli bir kitap. İnsanın içindeki okuma merakını daha da körüklüyor.
Belli birkaç kitap üzerinden küresel roman tanımı yaparken onun ne olup ne olmadığı hakkında da bilgi veriyor.
Pamuk, Bolano, Atwood, Murakami, Ferrante gibi yazarlar ve kitapları üzerinden konuyu anlatması da kesinlikle okuma keyfini arttıran bir husus.

Adam Kirsch bu kitabında küresel romanın, bir dünya edebiyatının var olup olamayacağını ve eğer böyle bir varsa bunun edebiyat için faydalı mı yoksa zararlı mı olduğunu tartışıyor. Kendi düşünceleri giriş bölümünde anlattıktan sonra Orhan Pamuk, Bolano, Murakami, Ngozi Adichie, Mohsin Hamid, Margaret Atwood, Michel Houellebecq ve Elena Ferrante'nin romanlarını inceleyerek kendi savlarını örnekliyor.

Kirsch önce küresel roman denilen şeye yönelik eleştirileri sıralıyor, bunları kabaca şöyle özetleyebiliriz: Küresel roman kapitalizmin edebiyatlaşmış hali, küreselleştiği için hem içi boşalıyor, hem de estetikten yoksun hale gelerek üslupsuzlaşıyor vb.

Kirsch ise bunların basmakalıp laflar olduğunu, küresel romanın küreselleşmeyi kendisine bir edebi malzeme yaptığını, hepsinin birbirine benzemediğini ve hatta benzer şeyler üstüne düşünseler dahi çoğu yerde zıt anlatım biçimleri yahut zıt fikirler ürettiklerini, kaldı ki küresel denilen şeyin yerelin de içinde olduğunu anlatıyor, bilhassa Ferrante bölümünde.

Küresel roman fikrini, bilhassa da kendi küreselliğinin farkında olan romanı şahsen önemsiyorum. Her insanın, insan denilen canlının bir versiyonu, bir biçimi olduğunu ve bize en uzak görülen insanın bile aslında bizden o kadar da uzak olamayacağını düşünüyorum, bu yüzden aslında insan üzerine akıl yürüten hiçbir metnin yerel olamayacağını düşünüyorum. Yerelliğinin farkında olması ise önemli, çünkü böylece kendi kültürüne uzak olan okuru da kendi meselesine ortak edebiliyor. Örneğin Masumiyet Müzesi'nde Orhan Pamuk bizim kültürümüzde olan "oturmak", "oturmaya gitmek," eylemini açıklıyor yabancı okur için; Kafamda Bir Tuhaflık'ta da bozayı açıklıyor aynı şekilde. Bunu son derece faydalı buluyorum. Böylece hem yerel meseleleri, yerel malzemelerle işliyor, hem de dünyanın farklı yerlerinden okurları metinden koparmıyor. Bence biz yazar, metnine ve kendi arzu ettiği edebiyat biçimine zarar vermediği müddetçe metnini kolaylaştırmaktan çekinmemeli.

Bu meselelerin haricinde Türkçede Bolano gibi bir yazarın metnine kafa yoran bir şeyler okumak çok keyifliydi, keşke daha çok okuyabilsek.

Genel olarak yazarın üslubunun da güzel olduğunu, çevirinin ise tertemiz olduğunu söyleyebilirim. Burada bahsi geçen kitaplardan birkaç tanesini okuduysanız, bu kitabı da tavsiye ederim. Vakıfbank Kültür Yayınları'ndan da okuduğum ilk kitaptı, şaşırtıcı derecede güzel bir iş yapmışlar.

İddialı bir başlığa sahip olan bu kitapta klasik roman ile çağdaş roman arasında karşılaştırmalar yapılarak evrensel olma çabalarına tartışma zemini aranıyor. Yerel ve küresel olgularının birbiriyle farkları ile yerelin evrensele uzanması için yapılması gerekenlerin neler olduğu üzerine kafa yoruluyor. Diğer yandan Dünya Edebiyatı kavramının; uluslararası olma amacı taşıyan yazarları dil, din, etnik köken, kültür gibi toplumsal farklılıkları törpülemeye götüren mecburi bir vazgeçişe sürüklediği savunuluyor. Bunun kısır ve yavan anlatıma kayan bir otosansüre dönüşmesinden endişe ediliyor. Kolaylıkla herkesin anlayabileceği bir romanın okur için de yazar için de kolaycılığa yol açabileceği düşünülüyor. Ayrıca çeviri de kaybolma olarak kodlanabilecek kaygının tercüme tüm metinlerin ortak sıkıntısı olabileceği vurgulanıyor.

Kitabın dünyanın farklı kıta ve ülkelerinden seçtiği yazarları ele aldığı örneklerle açıklama bölümünün ilk halkasını oluşturan Orhan Pamuk ve hem ona hem de bana (okuduklarım arasında) göre en iyi romanı olan Kar bu eksende irdeleniyor. Yazarın Türkiye Avrupa, Doğu Batı ve İslam ile diğer inanışlar arasındaki karşıtlığın bilincinde olarak yazdığı romanlarında yerelden evrensele nasıl yazılır dersi verdiğini iddia ediyor. Kar’da ele alınan dindar seküler karşıtlığının ülkenin büyük fay hatlarından biri olduğu vurgulanıyor. İstanbul dışında bir şehirde geçmesinin de yazarın özel bir tercihi sonucu olduğu böylesi netameli meselelerde merkezden çevreye yönelişin zorunlu hale geldiğini yine onun cümleleriyle açıklıyor.

Murakami’yi 1Q84 romanı çerçevesinde incelediği bölümde ise onun dünyada özellikle anadili İngilizce olan ülkelerdeki popülaritesinin Japon kültürünü basite indirgemesine ve uzun yıllar ABD’de yaşamış bir çevirmen olarak fazlasıyla Batı etkisinde kalmış olmasına bağlandığı şeklindeki Japon edebiyat çevrelerinin genel görüşü olduğunu, aktarıyor. Kitapta göçmenlik, kimlik arayışı (bunalımı), spekülatif kurgu gibi farklı temalarda eserleri irdelenen diğer yazarların da insanlığın süregiden sorunlarını, evrensel ölçekte ele aldığı ve küresel roman olma iddiasını taşıdıkları ifade ediliyor.

Ülkemiz polisiye edebiyatının önde gelen yazarlarından (eserleri uluslararası alanda da tanınan muharrirlerimizden) Ahmet Ümit’in bir söyleşisinde sarfettiği “Bu ülkenin kültürüyle büyüdüm ama aynı zamanda bu ülkenin kültürü evrensel kültürden bağımsız değil. Çünkü evrensel kültür, sadece Batı kültürü değil, Doğu kültürü değil, hepsinin birliği.” ifadesiyle konuya başka bir boyut getiriyor. Benzer bir yorumu da çağdaş İspanyolca edebiyatın önemli kalemlerinden Javier Cercas, edebiyatın tarih gibi olmaması, evrensel gerçeklerden bahsetmesinin onu evrensel yapan şeyin ta kendisi olduğunu, vurguluyor.

No concluding chapter; unattributed quotations; no end notes; passable recapitulations; and at least a handful of factual errors (e.g. the character of Amalfitano in 2666 is Chilean, not Spanish); and the "further reading" section contains the very 8 books that are the main focus of the analysis (read: padding), leaving us with only 6 real suggestions. I knew it was short when I bought it, but I didn't realize the actual mission statement of this Columbia University imprint: "[to] offer new ways to look at and understand the world that can be read in a few hours. Most readers are curious and busy." I can only presume this means that most "readers" are too busy to...well...read. And trying to offer the equivalent of sound bites to help people understand the world continues a contradictory trend in education. The good news is that, since the demographic this book explicitly targets is too busy to spend too much time reading, the barrage of spoilers will be inconsequential.

Edebiyat eleştirmeni Adam Kirsch'in "bir romanı küreselleştiren şey nedir?" sorusundan yola çıkarak yazdığı kısa kitap. 21. yüzyılın sorunları edebiyata nasıl yansıyor/yansıyacak benim önemsediğim bir mesele. O yüzden merakla okudum.

Yazar yerli edebiyat ve dünya edebiyatı ilişkisi, çevirinin ne kadar mümkün olduğu, neyi kaybettirdiği ya da kazandırdığı, edebiyatta popülerliğin yeri gibi tartışmalarla açıyor metni. Sonrasında dünyanın farklı bölgelerinden yazarların dünya edebiyatındaki yeri örnek bir eser üzerinden incelenmiş ve karşılaştırmalar yapılmış. İçindekiler kısmını aşağıda paylaşıyorum.

"Amerika'ya Gitmek ve Geri Dönmek" ile "Korkutucu Gelecekler" başlıklı bölümleri okumadım. Orada henüz eserleriyle tanışmadığım yazarlar var, bilmek istemedim. En sevdiğim ve kitabın tartışmasına en fazla katkı sunduğunu düşündüğüm bölüm Haruki Murakami ile Roberto Bolaño'nun karşılaştırıldığı kısım.

Kitap daha uzun olmalıydı. Bu haliyle eksik bıraktığı epey yer var. Elena Ferrante'den bahsedilen bölümde 21. yüzyılda romanının neyi ele alması gerektiğine dair varılan sonuç yetersiz kalıyor bence. Pat diye bir çözüm sunulmuş sanki.

Daha iyi olabileceğini düşünsem de severek okuduğum, beni başka kaynaklara götüren bir metin oldu. Özellikle giriş kısmı ve Değişen Gerçeklikler başlıklı bölüm için okunmasını tavsiye ederim.

Adam Kirsch’s The Global Novel: Writing the World in the 21st Century provides a barely one hundred page overview of current critical thought on “global novels”—such as Emily Apter, Tim Parks, Minae Mizumura, and Pascale Casanova—and descriptive chapters on Orhan Pamuk’s Snow; Elena Ferrante’s Neapolitan novels; Haruki Murakami’s 1Q84 compared to Roberto Bolaño’s 2666; Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Americanah compared to Mohsin Hamid’s The Reluctant Fundamentalist; and Margaret Atwood’s Oryx and Crake compared to Michel Houellebecq’s The Possibility of an Island.

Kirsch starts by assuming that ”the global novel is not a unitary genre. . . What unites all these various approaches is the insistence on the global dimensions not just of contemporary experience, but of contemporary imagination. If we understand ourselves as citizens of the world, then the novel must come to grips with this cosmopolitanism. . .” Kirsch’s conclusion is decidedly optimistic: ”. . . the global novel may be, not the homogenizing and coercive force it has often been called, but the herald and agent of a dawning collective conscience. Everyone must strive to hasten its approach.”.

The Global Novel is quick and easy to read: its brevity works to its advantage and to its disadvantage. To its advantage, the brevity of The Global Novel and Kirsch’s straightforward prose engages and retains the reader’s attention. To its disadvantage, the brevity of The Global Novel left this reader frustrated, feeling that Kirsch did not sufficiently explore, evaluate, and respond to critical opinions posed by Apter, Parks, Mizumura, and Casanova. While Kirsch provides an interesting and helpful counterpoint to, for example, Tim Parks’ discussion of ”the dull new global novel” in his Where I’m Reading From: The Changing World of Books, Kirsch’s readers would benefit from more thorough responses to Parks’ arguments about the deleterious impacts of international literary prizes, authors’ perceptions of international audiences, and the “commercial convenience” of “the universalist approach.”

Küresel roman kavramını sekiz tane kitap üzerinden anlatmaya çalışmak sorunlu görülmüş genelde ama daha büyük sorun sekiz tane kitap etrafında dönen tartışmanın eli yüzü düzgün bir “küresel roman” kavramını işaret edemiyor olmasında. Bu yüzden, kitabın problemi, ele alınan kitap sayısının coğrafik dağılımdaki eşitsizliği ima edebilecek olması, belli coğrafyaların tartışma dışında kalması da değil bence; aksine, özellikle neden bu romanların seçildiğine dair fikriyatımızın oluşmasını sağlayacak savlara, hiç değilse, tutarlı ipuçlarına romanlar arası geçişlerle ya da zaten var olmayan sonuç bölümüyle ulaşamıyor olmamızda. Küresel romanın küresel kapitalizme içkin eşitsizlikleri taşıyacak bir tür olmasına dair anti-küreselleşmeci söyleme karşı Kirsch, Ferrante’yi örnek gösteriyor: “dünya edebiyatına karşı oluşan eleştirel mutabakat doğruysa, Elena Ferrante gibi bir yazarın ortaya çıkmasını açıklamanın bir yolu da bulunmayacaktır” (88). Gerçekten mi? İtalya’dan çıkma Ferrante’yi örnek gösterip ‘yeterince iyiysen yolunu bulursun ya’ basitliğinde mi yaklaşacağız tartışmaya?

Yine de kitabı okuduktan sonra “küresel roman” nasıl bir şey olabilir sorusuna dair bir cevap oluştu kafamda. Kirsch’in ‘kendi konumunun farkında olmanın’ önemi üzerine yaptığı tartışma güzeldi. Pamuk’un Kar’daki biçimsel tercihleri (mesela hikâyenin bir yazar kahraman aracılığıyla anlatılıyor olması) ve olayların asla yaşanan şekliyle anlatılamayacağının hikayedeki kahraman tarafından vurgulanıyor olması, Kar’ı kendi imkanlarının farkında bir roman olarak görmemizi sağlayabilir. Yine Murakami de yazar olan bir kahraman yaratarak bu farkındalığa dahil olur, bunu yaparken de sıklıkla gerçeğin ne olduğunu, değiştirip değiştirilemeyeceğini sorgular. Böylesi sorgulamalar, sadece edebiyatın imkanlarını ya da imkansızlığını anlattığı ölçüde bile farkındalığı başarır, “ortak” kabul edebilecek bir derde parmak basmış olur. Kendinin farkında olmak, neleri aktarabileceğinin farkında olmak kadar nereden aktardığının farkında olmakla da ilgili olabilir. Romanlarda mekânın yok olması çoğu zaman belli bir coğrafyanın deneyimlerinden devşirilen bir evrensellik fikriyle ilişkiliyken, kendi konumunun farkında olan romanda mekan var olacak ve “küresel de mekanın dolayımlandığı bir tema” (10) olarak çıkacaktır karşımıza. Ne var ki bu, Kirsch için elzem bir ölçüt gibi de gözükmüyor, “batının mevcut tarihsel deneyimini insanlığın özüyle ve kaderiyle bu şekilde birleştirmenin bizatihi kendisi bir tür kolonyalizmdir” (87), diyor ama ona bu cümleyi kurduran Atwood’un Antilop ve Flurya’sını da bir küresel roman örneği olarak, sekiz örnekten biri olarak, kitabına dahil ediyor.

I did find what Kirsch has set out to do very interesting indeed, but his is also a limited approach. He has selected only eight authors with which to discuss the idea of the 'global novel', and these do not cover enough of the world to make his arguments fully believable. There are no writers from Australasia here, for instance, and I believe that had he included more writers, his arguments could have been fuller and more well-realised.

As it is, whilst his essays are certainly readable, they feel incredibly short. I was baffled that somebody would attempt to write about such a large topic in such a restricted space (135 pages is all that The Global Novel runs to), and I have to say that I don't feel the exercise was a wholly successful one. There are some interesting ideas here, and the whole has been well written and pieced together, but so much has been omitted that I cannot give it higher than a three-star rating.

Critiquing a piece of literary criticism is hard, especially when it's your first time doing it; but I'm going to try.

I started reading The Global Novel: Writing the world in the 21st Century because it was assigned as a secondary reading in my "World literature" course. The chapter where he discusses the global novel in general as well as the one on Ferrante are the ones we had to specifically read. However, as I continued on and on, I really enjoyed Kirsch's easy writing style that brought the point across in rather simple terms. The language didn't constitute of big words or long sentences, which is something that most of the papers and books I read seem to already have. Instead, it focused on the important aspects of each of the novel picked (I think there were 8 in all) and brought its point home. It didn't take long for me to understand what he was saying.

When talking about world literature, he invoked Casanova, Parks, Mizumura and Apter, mainly and focused his critique around their writings. He also talked about multiple pieces of fiction and their places in the space of world literature. Now although the text was straightforward in that it explained its argument, it failed to explore and respond to the arguments made by the other critics he mentioned. In that sense, it felt that the book did not do justice to the immensely complex topic at hand. At the same time, for someone like me, to whom this book was an introduction into the idea of world literature, the book held a finite number of ideas that I could explore on my own later.

Thus, although the book wasn't particularly expansive, it worked as a good introduction (although, a mighty long one) to gain an idea of what the subject could extend to. Sadly, when I looked at the "Further Reading" section, it gave only the list of the few titles already discussed in the text. Perhaps, had the list been a little more expansive, it could have worked wonders for students or learners like me.

On another note, to anyone picking up this book: beware! It has spoilers to the fictional titles mentioned in the contents.

Adam Kirsch is a young American poet and literary critic. He published 3 books of poetry and literary reviews of famous poets such as T.S.Eliot, Thomas Hardy and Dylan Thomas. I want to thank NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read such an extraordinary non-fiction book.
In this collection of essays, the author analyzes the meaning, or meanings of the term "World literature" in th 21st century. It is a term invented by the German writer Goethe and used to describe the internationa reception of some literary works in Europe and worldwide.
Nowadays, we can no longer refer to national literature but rather world literature. By analyzing this, the author relates it to the meaning of translation, and translated works into English and not only. Reading international literature in our own language means reading across boarders and also having strong literary values. Often we see writers that sharpen their work according to the demand of the global market.
In this respect, the author focuses on 6 different authors that write in English or have been translated into English and have worldwide recognition: Orhan Pamuk' "Snow", Haruki Murakami's "1Q84", Roberto Bolano's "2666", Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche's "Americanah" , Mohsin Hamid's "The Reluctant Fundamentalist", Margaret Atwood's "Oryx and Crake", Michel Houllebecq's "The Possibility of an Island" and Elena Ferrante's "Neapolitan Novels".
I focused on the chapters on Pamuk, Chimamanda and Ferrante, as favorite authors and also because I've already read the novels presented in this book. Each author focuses on different themes. Pamuk, for example, in his novel "Snow" tackles the problem of the Turkish attacks and crimes commited against the Armenians. He also focuses on the problem of identity experienced our main character Ka, who is torn between the Western World and the Islam religion.
For my second author, we have the immigration experience described by Chimamanda in her novel "Americanah". She describes America as place to grow and learn but never a permanent home.
And finally my 3rd author Elena Ferrante and her Neapolitan Novels. Ferrante takles the problem of growing up and personal identity. In her opinion, an important factor in shaping an individual destiny is the place where your're born. It is the story of emergence or failure to emerge, from the past to the future.
There would be so many great things to say about this book, but I'll stop here. I do not want to spoil your curiosity. It is a great non-fiction read if you're interested in the importance of translation, international literature and the importance of it.

This book delves into the world of literature to identify why some books are labelled “International” or “Global”. He discusses this from the point of view of an American who knows certain authors like from India, Nigeria and Japan but do they really understand the cultures behind the books?

I don’t think the book was intended to be a dissertation about the dilution of literature to suit a global audience. He just points it out without going in depth.

He starts with this train of thought but does not go into too much detail, leaving the reader to think independently of how this dilution affects perception of culture.

A rather lightweight and limited approach to what is a fascinating and complex subject. To talk about the “global novel” and then choose just eight authors is bewildering to say the least. As an introduction to the subject it perhaps has its merits (although I’m not quite sure what they might be) but as a serious exploration of what it means to write for a global readership it offers nothing new – especially to readers who are already immersed in world literature. The author seems to be trying to make a thesis out of very little and I couldn’t perceive an overarching argument. There’s nothing original or particularly insightful here and basically the book is just too short to offer a cogent and well-thought out examination of what constitutes the global novel.

This is a good introduction to the foundational debate o "world literature". His analyses of several popular novels are very concise & clear. But if you want to read a more complicated analysis of what world literature might be I highly recommend Franco Moretti's writing.

I requested this book as soon as I read the title. It sounded interesting, and I'm always keen on seeing what people think about novels. The Global Novel is a discussion on the subject of world literature. It starts pretty abruptly, plunging the reader straight into a discussion on the criticisms against the subject of world literature.

"The question of whether world literature can exist - in particular, whether the novel, the preeminent modern genre of exploration and explanation, can be "global" - is another way of asking whether a meaningfully global consciousness can exist."

In other words, the stakes are high. After the introductory chapter, the author goes on to discuss:

I didn't quite get the sense of an overarching argument, but it was an interesting discussion. I haven't read many of the books (and I don't really feel like reading any of them other than Ferrante and Murakami after reading this), but I was able to follow the discussion along. Perhaps I didn't get as much depth as I would if I had read the books, but it did make me think. In fact, this line by Mizumura made me think:

"Bilinguals [will] start taking their own country's literature less seriously than literature written in English - especially the classics of English literature, which are evolving into the universal cannon."

It did give me pause because I read primarily in English, even though I'm technically trilingual. I don't read in Chinese (not unless it's Chinese comics, and even that is rare and limited to my childhood) and now I'm wondering how much I've missed by neglecting one language.

This is probably aimed mainly at students of literature, but anyone curious about the world of literature might be interested in this.

In Adam Kirsch's introduction, he evaluates some of the recent criticism that proposes that the most famous international writers have become too commercial to be considered world literature. He addresses this question by examining eight works of fiction by authors from several different countries, including; Orhan Pamuk, Haruki Murakami, Roberto Bolano, Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche, Mohsin Hamid, Margaret Atwood, Michel Houllebecq and Elena Ferrante. These essays demonstrate the different way a novel can have international appeal and translatability. The 135 page book is a strange format for such a large topic and I found it strange that there was no concluding chapter to wrap up his findings, but I did enjoy reading about these books and their global reach. One word of warning, if you plan on reading any of these books in the future, you may want to hold off on this as there is quite a bit of plot points described in each essay. I received this from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

One of the shorter entries in the Columbia Global Reports series. Good intro, answering critics of the Right and Left on the Global Novel. But then goes on to discuss 8 recent novels, and most of his text is plot synopsis (as some Goodread "reviewers" have pointed out here, don't read this if you are looking forward to to reading any of the titles he covers - total spoiler alert!) . Some good points made, and got me interested in a couple of the titles covered - but more like "Lit Crit Lite". Good for a lower level UG class intro course. That said, his intro was worth the price of the kindle book for me. Reminder - 2 Stars is not damning - it means "It Was OK".

An interesting survey of the emerging genre, authors that include Bolano, Murakami, Ferrante. Would have been improved by more attention to the core topic and less to the individual authors and their selected works. Kirsch raises many interesting questions, points for that, alas with not enough attention to what might be answers.
