Phoenix /fēniks/: (in classical mythology) a unique bird inhabiting the Arabian Desert that burned itself on a funeral pyre before rising from the ashes with renewed youth to live through another cycle.
This isn’t mythology, it’s war, and Hendy is left in the hands of Hell’s cruelest gatekeepers.
His team is killed before his very eyes, and despite his efforts to save them, he’s captured and subjected to merciless torture—losing virtually every piece of his identity but his pulse.
After his rescue, he returns home from Afghanistan, saddled with facing the daunting task of healing his physical scars as well as the invisible ones—his emotional demons.
Dr. Presley Cole isn’t one to shy away from a challenge. Embarking on a new journey, she makes it her mission to prove to Hendy that his life isn’t over; that he’s worthy of love.
Because sometimes even a phoenix needs help to rise… Out of the Ashes.
**Out of the Ashes is a full-length, standalone which does not need to be read in conjunction with any other book.**
RC Boldt is a USA Today bestselling author currently living in part of the Costa Rican jungle with the love of her life and her mini-me. If you're in the mood for some killer homemade mojitos or can't recall the lyrics to a particular 80's song, she's your girl.
This book deals with some heavy stuff but handles it really well. Hendy is so traumatized from his captivity abuse, suffering PTSD, and with each page of the book he is slowly healing. He meets Presley who is compassionate, sweet and loving. These two complement each other in so many ways. The story is heartbreaking and emotional with bits of hope and sweetness! Sensitively written with a depth of emotion, character and understanding that is guaranteed to pull at the heart strings. This is a brilliant read and most people are sure to love it. Don't miss it.
Wowww!! I just finished OUT OF THE ASHES by RC Boldt and I am so overcome with emotion it feels as if my heart is gonna explode out of my chest! I am a SUCKER for wounded warrior tales but this book...OMG...NO WORDS for what this sweet, swoony, tender-hearted romance did to me. If you are looking for a sizzling hot love story with charm, humor and a healthy dose of angst then this book is for you!!
This is the third novel I have read by this uniquely talented author, and while each of her romances have been incredibly special in their own right, this is in my opinion her finest work to date.
In a nutshell, this is the tour de force tale of ex-Navy SEAL Cristiano “Hendy” Hendrixson who was presumed dead but rose from the ashes like a phoenix. After being held captive and tortured for over a year while on a covert mission in Afghanistan, he has a new lease on life and is determined to face each day with bravery and valor. But despite his positive outlook, he sustained extensive injuries during his imprisonment and suffers in silence, hiding his disfiguring scars behind his ball cap and camouflaging his secret anguish by his self-depreciating humor. He feels unworthy and unlovable, a freak show of sorts, until he finds happiness against all odds in the nurturing arms of the beautiful doctor who sets out to heal him, body and soul.
Oh. My. Heart!! The feels I had for this book were off the charts! I vacillated between giggling with pure joy, weeping with sadness, shivering with delight, and tingling from head to toe!! This book was brimming with everything I could have wished for in a romance, and yet RC Bolt took it up a notch and gave me more. More humor, more HOTNESS, more powerful emotion, more poignancy, more inspiration, more aching tenderness, just MORE, MORE, MORE!!!! It's hard to put a definitive label on this book… it’s upbeat but also achingly emotional and bittersweet, heart wrenching yet not heart SHATTERING, and while this tale delves into some pretty heavy issues that wounded warriors face, there were plenty of lighthearted, swoony, and warm, fuzzy moments to balance things out.
Gah! What can I possibly say about this sweet, sexy, DARKLY IMPOSING yet gentle-natured ex-Navy SEAL who lights up a room and melts hearts with his lopsided smile? Hunky Hendy just SLAYED me from page one! Oh and for the record…if you think you are getting a book about a moody broody battle-scarred military vet who is pissed at the world for all the horror he has endured, you are in for quite a surprise! I found it incredibly refreshing that RC Boldt told this from a different vantage point. Hendy is most definitely a man who has been to hell and back but rather than wallowing in misery, he is determined to forge ahead with dignity and honor. He is definitely a cup half full kinda guy, and I love, love, LOVE how the author oftentimes used humor and hope rather hen soul crushing angst and despair to depict Hendy’s arduous journey back to the world of the living.
Now that’s NOT to say he’s always all chipper and jovial without a care in the world. I ached for this chivalrous warrior who shoulders so many burdens on his massive shoulders. He puts up a brave front but pain, anxiety and embarrassment about his physical appearance are his constant companions. He breaks my heart and heals it and truly personifies the kind of stalwart war veteran who you can truly root for to triumph against all odds.
And I would be remiss if I did not give a HUGE SHOUTOUT to his love interest Presley Cole, the sweet, kindhearted chiropractor who he goes to help him with pain management and ends up felling head over heels for. I adored this heroine! She is definitely BFF material. She’s got beauty, brains, an amazing bedside manner, a wry sense of humor, and a heart of pure gold! Her warmth and compassion were truly awe-inspiring-- and sighhh!--I just LOVED the way she loved Hendy. Like he is the hottest male on the planet!!! Although he has a hard time believing he could ever be worthy of someone as remarkable as “Pres,” she is the first woman who hasn’t recoiled in horror when she looks at Hendy—doesn't even appear to register his physical imperfections--and accepts him for who he is NOW.
This couple is so darn adorable together I could hardly stand it!! They just CLICKED, and Presley’s goofy quirkiness is the perfect counterpart to this big, tough, former Navy SEAL's roguish charm. I relished how much FUN they had together, how they both are Jeopardy trivia nerds and help one another grow as individuals. For as much as she gives her man the courage to try to face his demons and finally allow the world to see him—all of him--he alters her life as well. He makes her feel beautiful and adored and so ALIVE, and is a shining example that she needs to live life it to the fullest--with no regrets.
This romance is definitely a SLOW BURN, with breathtaking tenderness and delicious sexual tension throughout, and by the time this amorous duo finally surrendered to their BLAZING passion I nearly combusted! There were so many quietly profound moments throughout, pure in simplicity but grand in scope that touched me to the core. And as expected there are some bumps in the road to HEA. This duo’s journey has its share of emotional landmines and there are certainly a few tears shed along the way on my part. But honestly I would not have it any other way because it made the romantic resolution SO MUCH SWEETER!
Just like with Ms. Boldt's previous book, OUT OF LOVE, the secondary characters add whimsy, humor and rich texture to this tale. I got a kick out of the motley crew of ex service men who became a bonafide family and thought the interaction with Hendy’s roomie, former Green Beret Kane and Presley’s Latino co-colleague Lucia were a pure riot! Can’t wait to see who good ol Texas boy Kane eventually ends up with!
Ultimately, OUT OF THE ASHES, a sweet, sexy, emotionally uplifting tale that celebrates love, friendship and soul-deep healing, left me with heart happy feels and one DOOZY of a book hangover!
To call this book an emotional read would be an understatement. It was spiritual. It grabs your soul and doesn't let go. It's a story of growth and survival. The trauma that Hendy survives is unthinkable but it is real. It happens. Daily. This situation has never touched me personally but I know good writing when I read it. I know intelligent and thought out writing when I read it. And this was it and so much more. It was compassionate and it was loving and it was awe inspiring.
From time to time, a story captures me and won't let me go. I couldn't put Out of the Ashes down. The struggle the main character goes through to realize that beauty is more than skin deep combined with the humor and sexiness that sizzles off the page had me reading as fast as I could. That is, until I was close to the end and realized I was about to have one of the biggest book boyfriend hangovers of my life. Out of the Ashes has everything, and RC Boldt's writing just gets better and better. This, by far, is my favorite from her.
Make sure you've added this one to your TBR and read Out of Love if you haven't already because Foster is yummy.
It took me a few days to gain my composure after reading this book. I still dont think I can adequately find the words to express how much I loved this book. Hendy is home from a horrible experience. He was sent to get some help through a local doctor. One who had left him at a loss for words. He had been so guarded and a hermit that he wasn't ready for the one woman who could possibly turn his life around..But the question is, was he ready for her? Could he give her everything she needs and deserves.
Presley was assigned to help Hendy. She wasn't ready for who she saw. She knew he was damaged. She wasn't expecting to see that his heart was more damaged than what you saw on the outside. She wasn't prepared to fall for him. They complete each other. Their hearts beat to the same beat. The love they share is beyond amazing. ❤❤❤
Take a shot everytime I come across a book where the heroine emotionally cheats on her boyfriend/fiancee/husband/significant other and the book ends up with the boyfriend/fiancee/husband/significant other cheating on her, just to justify the whole thing.
Oh, my dear sweet Hendy. I loved this installment in the Out Of series. I knew to expect some heart-wrenching details about his time as a POW, and I certainly got that. But I also got a strong hero who fought his way back into the world of the living, to make himself happy and to be enough for our heroine. It was such a sweet story. Looking forward to the next book!
Ever since I finished Out of Love by RC Boldt at Christmas, I have been hounding the poor woman for the next book in this series. She build up the suspense surrounding Hendy early in Out of love, so to say I was excited when Out of Ashes dropped on my kindle is an understatement.
Christiano Hendixson knows as Hendy is a navy seal but different than most. Naturally, he is still a badass but he is damaged, both mentally and physically. When he meets his new chiropractor, Presley Cole, he is immediately drawn to the smart and funny doctor, but unfortunately Presley belongs to someone else.
What I have loved about this series is the twist RC Boldt puts on the normal Navy Seal trope. Don’t get me wrong, the hero is still alpha to the core, but they have a soft side too. Especially Hendy tries to hide his vulnerability and pain. It made him very believable and my heart just hurt for him. Luckily, Presley is just the doctor he needed. She gently pushes him to accept and love who he is and his new reality. She does this with sass and brains, which makes her character even more lovable.
RC Boldt has written a great book about the healing power of love. Not just the love between a man and a woman, but most of all the love you need to have for yourself. You can’t truly love someone else before you learn to love yourself. Hendy’s road to that point is amazing which is why Out of Ashes gets 4.5 stars.
If it were possible, I would rate this book as a 10 star book. RC Boldt has created the perfect mix for this book. She has incorporated the right amount of romance, humor and emotion/angst. Hendy has returned "from the dead". After losing his entire unit in Afghanistan, Hendy is captured and tortured for almost 2 years. When he is rescued, the torture has left deep scars physically and emotionally. When he returns to the states and has exhausted all forms of treatment but wishes to avoid narcotics, he turns to a beautiful chiropractor and naturopathic doctor, Presley. Presley is engaged and she is his doctor. When feelings develop, they know they must tread lightly as they will be passing the lines of a doctor patient relationship. Their journey to discovering how they can make this relationship work is a complete roller coaster ride of emotions. Once you begin reading, you will not want to put it down nor will you want to leave these two characters to join the real world once again. Thank you so much for this magnificent read.
Out of the Ashes is the second book in R.C. Boldt’s Out of… series, but it works perfectly fine as a standalone novel. If you have read other Boldt books, including the prior book in the series, you will have a better understanding of the side characters in this one, but it is not necessary to enjoy Out of the Ashes.
Out of the Ashes is a story of healing, one that packs a serious punch throughout. You’re pulled in deep, you fall in love with the characters, and you’ll find yourself happy to devour it in a single sitting. As always, Boldt pulled out all the emotions with this one and I could not put it down.
As much as I loved this one, I did find myself with a few lingering questions. I’m hoping these will be answered in the future Out of… books, because I’m really curious to find out the reasons behind these aspects and there is the potential for answers through a certain new character.
Overall, Out of the Ashes was another wonderful read from R.C. Boldt. It was not my favourite read from the author, but every R.C. Boldt book I have read has shown itself to be wonderful.
The characters are interesting –both the leads and the minor. Presley’s character is sweet, while Hendy’s character is mysterious. In the end, they balance each other out. I like the plot, and I love all the scenes in the book, especially when Presley got drunk – that scene was hilarious. The pace is realistic – the characters falling in love doesn’t seem rushed, and the ending is just perfect. Overall, it is a really good book. It has drama and comedy that I’m sure a lot of readers will love and enjoy.
The United States government has confirmed reports that a member of the United States Special Forces has been found alive. He was one of five soldiers declared dead when their helicopter was shot down during a mission.
אבל הוא שרד
Afghanistan may have taken the lives of some of the best guys I’ve ever known, but it sure as shit didn’t take away my sense of humor—or my horny tendencies. Hell, some days, that’s all that gets me through.
הסבר על השם של הספר~
“Not everyone can say they came back from the dead.” Turning to me again, he keeps his tone firm as if to brook no argument. “You need to own it. You rose from the ashes. Like the damn phoenix.
מצד שני יש לנו את הרופאה שלו
This tall, charming man who carries around more pain than anyone should have to deal with in a lifetime has awakened something within me. And that just won’t do.
וניצוצות חדי קרן שמפליצים קשת בענן...
It says volumes when your patient—your sweet, handsome, charming patient—is more excited and congratulatory about your achievement than your own fiancé.
“Go rescue your woman and show her what’s what.”
הארוס שלה ממש בן זונה
“Why are we together, Dylan? It used to make sense. But now?” I wave a hand, gesturing between us. “Why are we still together?”“Because of your par—” He freezes, and his eyes slowly, warily rise to meet mine. “I mean because I love you.” His attempt to backpedal is far too obvious.
אני אסביר את הבעיה שלי עם השינוי מצב רוח של הדמויות...
ברגע אחד..
“I can’t do that. Not only because it’s been mere hours after you’ve made a major life decision, but also because you and I both know you deserve more.”
ברגע שני... שניה וחצי אחרי....
“If I were lying, I sure as hell wouldn’t be as hard as I am right now.”
“Your mother gave him an ultimatum when she discovered she was pregnant with you. He chose his work—reluctantly so. But he loved you. Watched you grow up.”
ומי שהתגעגע לדרמת סרטים של שנות ה2000.. בבקשה
Dylan. God, can the guy not get a freaking clue? Apparently not, because he approaches us, stepping away from the guys I recognize as some of his co-workers. “Presley.” Hendy releases me to step forward. “I’m starting to wonder if you have a memory issue.” He folds his thick, muscular arms across his broad chest, looking more imposing than usual. “I’m Hendy, former Navy SEAL.”“Kane Windham, Green Beret.” Kane steps up beside Hendy, adopting the same pose. All signs of his usual lighthearted and fun personality is gone, and in its place is a mask of serious intensity—one I’ve not seen before. Foster, who had been on the dance floor twirling his fiancée, steps up. “Foster Kavanaugh, also a former Navy SEAL.”
ואז כמובן שאחרי שהוא השיג את הבחורה, הבריח את הארוס שלי, הדאלבאיוב הולך לברר עם עצמו מה הוא שווה... וזה מעצבן!
The real question is do you love him enough to wait? But I think he’s wrong. I think the real question is whether I have it in me to risk waiting for him…only for him not to come back.
This is just a wow read. An emotional read. A read with a connection for those of us tied to the military. Exceptional.
This book can be read as a standalone however I encourage you to read Out of Love prior to this release. You do still stay in touch with all of the characters you meet in the first book. Foster and Noelle are here as well as our other heros and band of brothers.
Hendy and Presley -- someone who sees a man and a man who needs to see himself -- This is a riveting story of recovery, survivors guilt and more. Although fiction if this does not tie you to what our men and women face on the battlefield then I don't know what will. My heart was beating out of my chest with every word, every thought and every ounce of emotional distress and morsel of hope.
Take your time with this one --- absorb it all. You wont regret it. We are fortunate enough to have a few other books in this series on coming -- Out Of Luck Out Of Chances Out Of Hope
I'm ready I think ... my entire being needs to heal a bit before diving back in but you can believe I am and I will. Thank you for a beautiful read, a magnificent cover and for your acknowledgement in the afterword for those needing help and where to go.
Review to post to Ramblings From Beneath The Sheets. It was my honor to have received this ARC.
Christ on a cracker - the things Cristiano (“Hendy”) Hendrixson just did to my heart. I knew his story would pack an emotional punch. I knew he'd leave a mark. I entered into this story already half in love with him but now? Ugh. I’m sitting here all twitterpated and starry eyed because Hendy just carved out a permanent place for himself in my heart.
I adore wounded heroes. For reasons I can't quite put my finger on, this is one of my favorite tropes. I think it's the element of rising above the darkness of the wounds and finding love in spite of imperfections. There's an underlying beauty and the beast thing going on here -- and I loved every minute of it. Loved it. LOVED IT. I felt like the sensitive subject matter was handled respectfully and sensitively and the love story handled so beautifully -- not too heavy, not too light. I laughed a little. I ached a bit. I completely lost myself in this lovely story and I'm not entirely ready to let go of it.
Hendy and Presley were remarkable characters on their own merits and I loved them as much as individuals as I loved who they were to each other. It’s no secret how I felt about Hendy (I mean, did you read the first two paragraphs of shameless gushing?) but Presley stole my heart in her own way. A little quirky, a little nerdy, sometimes painfully awkward – she was a woman after my own heart. I loved her strength of character and her level headedness when times got tough. She was amazing, the perfect fit for Hendy, which means the two of them together were basically *hearts explosion*.
Sometimes half the magic of a book comes from its secondary characters. This is something I feel like Ms. Boldt excels at - for every hero I fall in love with, she gives me five more I want to get to know better. For every heroine I want to force my best friendship on - she gives me five more I want to invite to a most epic sleepover. The cast here is colorful, fascinating, and completely lovable and I have no idea where things are going from here (if anywhere) but I have a list of demands for stories if anyone (*cough* Ms. Boldt *cough*) is interested.
From first page to last, Out of the Ashes held me completely captivated. I couldn’t get enough of this heartwarming and sexy couple and all the ways they tugged at my heart. What a fantastic story! I literally cannot say enough good things about it – I mean, I guess you’re just going to have to read it for yourself! ~ Shelly, 4.5 Stars
Out of the Ashes was.....without a doubt.....my top favorite RC Boldt book to date! It was INCREDIBLE. A story full of emotion, love, friendship, and of course hotness, that I simply could not put down. I read it in one sitting. I adore this group of friends. But this story was different from the others. What Hendy had to endure was unlike anything I could imagine. I wanted to wrap my arms around him. And Presley was for sure the perfect woman for him. Strong, independent, loving, sure and steady. She was exactly what Hendy needed. What an amazing couple they made. If you're looking for a read that is nothing short of amazing, read this!
This was another great story by RC Boldt's and probably my favorite to date. I loved Henley despite how much he has gone through in the past. My heart would break for him at times. I think him and Presley were perfect for each other and I loved the development of their friendship and how the story progressed. They have great chemistry and there are some hot scenes throughout. The book deals with tough issues that both characters are facing and this is beautifully written. The story has a great pace and lots of twists and turns. It was great to see characters from the other books and Kane so needs a book written about him- I loved him in this one. I sucked into the story and I was hooked from the beginning . Overall a great sexy read that I really enjoyed.
* I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review
Did you say Ex Military Seal with a damaged soul and scarred who meets a kind smart loving Doc??? A book that will give me more feels than EVER? Yes Yes Yes!!!
My mind and heart are still trying to come back to reality and NOPE they don't want to. Out of the Ashes completely took my life over. And I say that with lots of LOVE. It's been a bit since a story touched my soul in a way I will never forget. From the beginning, I was drawn to Hendy and the unimaginable pain and torture he barely survived. Hendy losing everything about himself and being left with parts of himself he can't bare to accept. Presley, my new book girlfriend, was an amazing character that I just loved to pieces. Having her own life needing a serious "adjustment". This book deals with unforgettable pain and struggle, but this book also shows kindness and compassion and understanding and acceptance. Two Souls that crossed each other path not knowing everything was about to change in all the best possible ways. This book is a definite must. Hendy is my Phoenix rising out of the ashes❤️
I knew if we ever got a book about Hendy he would steal my heart from Foster and I wasn't mistaken, we hear about Hendy being captured in Out Of Love and I knew his book would really touch me if we ever got one. This book can be read as a standalone but I definitely recommend you read Out Of Love first, you will get some background of the other characters and understand the dynamics of their relationships.
Hendy has suffered for over a year at the hands of terrorists and comes back stateside a totally different man than he went, he was used to being the joker of the group and the guy all the women wanted but after sustaining serious injuries to his face he realises things will never be the same again. Hendy is fighting many demons some of which are survivors guilt and PTSD, while this isn’t a story about real life it shows us some of what our troops go through to serve their country.
Presley is a chiropractor and one of the best in her field, after meeting her new patient Hendy she cant deny they have a connection and some serious attraction to each other. Only problem is she’s already in a relationship. Presley hasn’t been without her struggles either but while they are mild she still has to overcome them. I really enjoyed Presley’s character, she seen past Hendy’s exterior and didn’t care what others thought about that!
I absolutely adored Kane Windham in this book, we met Kane in Out Of Love but its this book he really made his mark with me. He was such a great guy and was always trying to help Hendy, he knew when to lighten the conversation and knew when to touch subjects his other friends wouldn’t. To be honest this whole group of friends are some of the best characters I have read and I really hope we get to see them all get their HEA’s.
Watching Hendy heal was both heartbreaking and cathartic, I cried rivers at times while reading this book but I wouldn’t change that fact. It shows how talented the author was for hitting us that hard with her writing and evoking some serious emotions out of us.
This was an amazing story about a veteran overcoming PTSD and learning to love himself as he is now, It was hard hitting at times and broached some tough topics but it was handled so well. RC Boldt is quickly becoming an author I love, this has been my favourite of her books by far but I am excited to see what she has in store for us in the future.
Out of the Ashes is thought provoking and eye opening to the emotional turmoil of our soldiers. There is so much that they endure that the general public is unaware. Hendy returns stateside after a tragic event. He is left scarred inside and out. The alternating points of view gave me an insight into Hendy's pain and anger.
Presley is a chiropractor who has been assigned by the VA to help alleviate some of Hendy's chronic pain. She is compassionate, funny and great at her job. I connected with Presley right off and enjoyed her character.
My dad was 22 years Army and maybe that made me connect with Hendy but I feel any reader would empathize with him and cheer for Presley and her determination to help him.
RC Boldt has written a deep moving story that will stay with me for awhile. She gives us a HEA so that thought will get you the sad chapters.
Ive followed this series and loved every book from the very first one, but this one, this one was different in so many ways. Of course i loved it infact its probably my favourite one yet.
Hendy, oh boy Hendy my heart broke for him so many times, im talking tears running down my cheek without even realising i was crying. I needed him to get a HEA, not a want but a need.
This books touches issues such as PTSD and it hit really close to home for me, i had to stop several times and just catch my breath. On the flip side it also teaches us a lesson, a lesson about taking each day as it comes and slowly learning to heal just as Hendy does.
I read this book in one day, albiet a few intervals but i just had to know how it ended, i was as much invested in the characters as i was the story and im so glad they got their HEA, Presley was exactly what Hendy needed and really brought him out of his shell and taught him to enjoy life again.
I have nothing but praise for this author and this series.
I freaking loved this book! Ok I have to be honest with each book in the Teach Me and Out of Series I have fallen more in love with this group of characters, and have been dying for Hendy's story. RC Boldt did not disappoint! Hendy has gone through some shit and in the beginning he was struggling to find himself on the other side. But with the love and support from his friends and a good woman he rises like the Phoenix. Presley was perfect. She was kind, loving, intelligent, and honest. I loved every moment of this book. Although it dealt with some very real and very heavy issues, it did so with grace and love. There was so much love y'all! Presley loves her man something fierce and all these characters that we've grown to love throughout the series love each other and make up a strong loving family unit. It's fabulous. I can't wait for more!!
Hendy and Presley are the best! This book is about loving yourself because you can't expect someone else will. Hendy is a wounded vet who hasn't fully come to terms with the fact he's all scarred up. Inside and out. Presley is a chiropractor and alternative medicine practitioner. Once they meet, it's on. They is some other man drama, but he was a sleeze who didnt appreciate her. A must read!
Another amazing, touching, kick@ss book by R.C. Boldt.
My most favorite part about reading one of R.C. Boldt's books is that at the end of the day it always comes down to family and how they have each other's back no matter what. Blood relation or not...it doesn't matter. My heart broken for Hendy. I personally have no idea the pain and suffering he went through but the emotions that R.C. Boldt put forth in Out Of The Ashes made you feel like you were right there and just wanted to give the big guy a freaking hug.
Hendy, after returning from being held captive for a year, is trying to adjust to his new "life" and the battle wounds that he carries with him. He feels like he is less of a man because of the scars that he bears. He truly doesn't know how to adjust and isn't really living life to its fullest. Then enters Presley. Oh sweet not so innocent Presley. There is a dirty girl in there waiting to break free but she has been held back by her parents and fiancé.
When Presley and Hendy meet there is a definite attraction between the two. One doesn't think he is worthy enough of someone's love and the other is "stuck" in a relationship. A friendship is formed and the two become close. When Presley becomes single Presley and Hendy become more. The Sex is hot. The Friendship that continues to grow is hotter and I was left needed more. With all relationships times become hard and decisions have to be made. My heart was torn for both Presley and Hendy. No more words can be said. I don't want to give away too much.
I can't say enough how much I truly loved this book. I read it in a day. If I didn't need sleep it would have been devoured in hours. R.C. Boldt has yet to disappoint me with a book and Out Of The Ashes is a 5+ Star read. Definitely pick up your copy today!

***I received an e-ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review***
Wow! What an emotional roller coaster! I read Out of Love first and was very intrigued by Hendy's story and was expecting to get more answers than I did in this book. So if you are looking for more of a romantic suspense then this is not the book for you. The suspense takes a backseat to the romance and the healing journey Hendy takes, which is fine by me!
Hendy: This poor tortured soul. I just wanted to wrap him up in my arms and give him the biggest hug! What he went through overseas was traumatic and to constantly be in his head as he fights these hidden demons was so emotional. One of my favorite moments that I fell in love with this man though was there were of course many other moments that I fell in love with this man but that was just the first. The strength that Hendy showed in the end was mesmerizing and I was crying along with Presley as he Hendy was such a sweet man who deserves all the love in the world for his sacrifice for his country.
Presley: Presley had her own back story but it was not as prominent because Hendy was the star player in this novel. I did love her quirkiness and her and Hendy's Jeopardy clues back and forth to each other. I love when a couple has a special saying or a special tradition that is unique to them because I always get the warm and fuzzier from it. Presley was beyond sweet and caring and she just had this calming presence about her that I really related to. Her support and encouragement to help Hendy in any way she could was beyond amazing to read about. I also loved her assertiveness and how she went after what she wanted after so many years of being put down by her
Side Characters: I enjoyed seeing the crew again! Kade is definitely my favorite with his southern Texas accent and his terms of endearment. I can not wait for his story! Lucia was such a great character as well! she had me laughing so hard and I kept getting her Colombian accent stuck in my head :) and lets not forget sweet Izzy! These trained dogs that help Veterans that RC Boldt has included in her books are incredible to read about. It is amazing that you can teach dogs how to comfort a veteran who is experiencing PTSD symptoms.
Plot: The plot is all about Hendy and Presley's journey and how Hendy deals with everything when he comes back with a severely scarred face and back. The message this story portrays is one that everyone needs to hear. It was such a hard lesson for Hendy to learn, but he needed to learn it. I thought the story had a really good pace to it. There weren't moments that I was bored or skimming.
Overall, this was a fantastic story about a vet trying to rise from the ashes of who he used to be and coming out stronger on the other side.
Overall Rating: 3.5/5 Books set in the same world: Out of Love
***EXCERPT REVEAL***
We both sit frozen, my stare locking onto her lips. They look unimaginably soft, but it’s her eyes that continue to mesmerize me. Like she can peer inside, like she notices what I keep locked deep within, that she can— Rrrrrrrrr! Jolting from the loud vibration of her cell phone on the lacquered bar top, Presley jerks away. She grabs her phone like it’s a lifeline as the screen lights up with the name Dylan, signifying an incoming text message. She scans the message, and I can’t help but notice it’s a generic text saying good night and he’d talk to her the following day. And a part of me feels a little…jealous. Shit. Seriously, man. Get it together. You shouldn’t be getting close to another guy’s woman. But I’m not getting close. I’m having a fun conversation with a woman who happens to also be my doctor. A woman who’s helped me tremendously in such a short period. A woman who is incredibly smart and beautiful. A woman who doesn’t cringe in horror when she looks at me—who doesn’t appear to register the presence of my scars. A woman who’s a trivia nerd like me. Damn if that last one doesn’t give me some warm fucking fuzzies. I may have been with more than my allotted share of women who had an ass ton of space between the ears, but make no mistake…nothing turns me on more than a woman who’s smart as a whip. And yeah, I got a semi during Jeopardy, hearing her softly spoken answers each time Alex read a clue. I’m a sicko, I know. But shit, she’s got beauty, brains, and not to mention, she’s incredibly kind. This Dylan guy had better realize how good he has it. She reaches for her purse, reacting a split second too late to me slipping money to Ryan to pay our tabs. “Wait! You can’t—” I cut her off with a look of faux sternness. “You didn’t have to humor me and watch the game with me.” A college football game that consisted of two small schools, no less, but it served as an excuse to get out of the house for a bit. While I hate having to hide behind my ball cap, it doesn’t mean I want to become a damn recluse. “Or share a meal with me.” “It was my pleasure. But at least let me take care of the tip.” Opening her wallet, she tries to produce her share. Before she can pluck any bills from it, I lay my hand over hers. She doesn’t immediately look up to meet my eyes; instead, she appears transfixed by the sight of our hands together, and at the contrast in coloring, my darker, tanned skin to her fairer skin. It’s then my mind veers off like the old Hendy. To the fucking gutter. Because I imagine linking my fingers through hers while I fuck her against the wall, counter, bed—wherever—all the while whispering in her ear the other naughty things I plan to do to her. Except she’s taken. I need to remember that. And I sure as shit am not delusional enough to think anyone could love someone who looks the way I do. Least of all, someone as beautiful and sweet as Presley Cole. Mentally shaking off my thoughts and removing my hand from hers, I wink. “Consider it my treat,” I add softly, “for putting up with me these past few weeks.” What I get in return is an overly bright smile laced with a tinge of panic. She has such an unnerving way of seeing through me that I hope she didn’t see through to my inappropriate thoughts from seconds ago. “It’s been a pleasure, Hendy.” Slipping off the barstool, I wait for her to grab her purse. Presley and I wave at Ryan, thanking him again as we exit and step out into the typical Florida still-humid-as-hell-even-though-it’s-evening weather. “Where are you parked?” It’s dark, and although Fernandina Beach, especially the downtown area, is much like Mayberry where the worst crime that occurs is shoplifting a pack of chewing gum, I need to see her safely to her car. Lord knows I gave my mother more than her share of gray hairs as a hell-raiser back in the day, but there’s no denying she raised me to be a gentleman. “Just over there.” Presley gestures to the small parking lot nearby, a mere four yards away from where we stand. She pauses on the sidewalk, appearing nervous, and her eyes flit to me before darting away. “Thanks again for tonight.” I watch as she regains her composure, returning to doctor mode before meeting my gaze. “I’ll see you for your adjustment tomorrow.” Then she turns to step off the sidewalk, intent on crossing the street. Without me. Running a hand down my face with a silent groan, I quickly cross the street, following her. Approaching where she’s standing at her car, I call out her name as her vehicle’s lights flash twice when she unlocks it with her key fob. “Presley.” Drawing to a stop a foot away from her, I get this strange tightness in my chest at the fact she’s leaving me to head home. Stupid as hell, but there’s no denying it. There’s just something about her. But she belongs to—is engaged to marry—someone else. Knock it off, man. Yet when she peers up at me with those eyes—one blue and one green—I could get lost in their depths. Reaching for the door handle, I offer a smile and open the car door for her. “Get in. I want to make sure you leave here safe and sound.” At my words, I see something flicker in her eyes. And I know, at this moment, if she says anything remotely sweet to me right now, there’s a good chance it’ll send me crossing that line. And I can’t have that. I’ve got a reverse case of Florence Nightingale syndrome. That’s got to be it. Which is why I add my next words. “Gotta get you home safe so you can see your man.” Fuck. It leaves a nasty taste in my mouth to utter that shit. Reminds me of getting the damn desert sand in my mouth when we were out in the middle of nowhere on a mission. That shit makes you want to spit, clean out your damn mouth, and rid yourself of that grittiness. Her expression is shuttered, smile stiff, and her voice subdued. “Thanks again.” Closing the door after she’s safely inside and buckled up, I offer a quick nod, tugging the brim of my ball cap lower as I turn to make my way to my truck, which is parked along the curb near the bar. I don’t look back—no quick glance—because the disappointment that the night has to end makes me feel bad enough. But of all people, I should know best that all good things must come to an end.
Having read and loved Clam Jam I jumped at the chance to read an arc of another book by the same author. This book couldn't be more different and yet was just as well written, had just as good characters and was equally a 5 star read.
Not many books get me to shed tears, but this did and for that it gets my thumbs up. Hendy had been a very shallow man, living by his looks (when he wasn't being a bad ass navy seal). The story starts AFTER the end of his Seal career and his struggle to come to terms with how his life had changed. He was a likeable, smart-mouthed hero who you will 'fall in love with'.
Presley is such a down-to-earth and believable heroine, with her own hang-ups, who learns how to stand up for herself. The chemistry between Hendy and Presley is so hot, but I liked how the romance and relationship took time to develop. I'm not a huge fan of 'instant love' and loved that there was a friendship stage prior to any romance.
Whilst there isn't the usual huge row or misunderstanding, there is a crisis point that will tear at your emotions and have you hoping for a HEA for Hendy. I'd also love to see some HEA for the supporting characters, particularly Kane and Lucia who both made me smile with their warmth and humour.
I found the plot to be captivating, the pace of the story was good, the characters are all extremely well written and the narrative flowed smoothly ensuring an easy read. R.C. Boldt is a talented author who writes an enjoyable and captivating story that will keep you interested from the first page to the very last line.
Once again, RC Boldt has shared a love story that gave me butterflies and massive smiles. I really enjoy the stories that I've read of hers so far. I loved Clam Jam and now I can add Out of the Ashes to that list! I am going to jump backwards and dive into Out of Love here soon because there is a character I want to "meet" in that book. RC Boldt is most definitely on my "to read" list now.
ALL OF THE CHARACTERS in this series are ones that I am most definitely excited to be reading more of. I really liked that she utilized ALL of them in this story too. The depth of her characters are really well done. I think it's safe to say that I want to read this entire series, from start to finish. I have fallen in love with Cristiano Hendrixson. Ok? I admit it! "Hendy" is a strong character with admirable traits and he has SO much confidence, but that confidence is marred by his physical appearance and the emotional side effects of what happened to him -- the left over results of being held a prisoner and tortured. What a life, right? And to make it back alive, but still have a constant reminder of your torture has to be a difficult thing to recover from. He is an absolute gentleman. He really was a huge draw for me in this book, and one of the things that made me swoon hard for him was that he was so strong and so alpha mixed into one complex character, but he was so soft and so perfectly sweet on Presley as well. Seriously, so swoony!!! I'm *SO* in love with him and the way he opened up and fell for her. The way he treated her like the princess she was in his eyes, it was so perfect!! So sigh-worthy. He was such a lovable character.
Presley found herself falling for her patient, yet morally bound to her fiancé. Interesting storyline for sure and you know me...I love these kinds!! Well, it was a little more cut and dry than that, so no angst or nail biting happening on my end, but her fiancé was 100% douche-nozzle material and I am so glad she saw that really quick. Parts of Presley's personality were strong and quirky, fun and admirable, but she had a loving side that was so strong and caring. She really is everyone's friend, and she was so fun to laugh with and laugh at. She, to me, was real and I liked that about her. I would most definitely like to hang out with her!
THESE TWO CHARACTERS had a journey that wasn't easily navigable and crossing a professional/moral boundary provided some drama for them to get through. With all their roadblocks, some feelings were hurt, but in the end it was worth the bumpy ride. I loved their relationship. I loved the dipping of the toes ever so slowly into the waters and the excitement behind a new relationship. I got all the smiles and giddiness from these two falling in love. I loved how they held back, but cautiously moved forward. I also felt the pain these two endured while trying to find their footing and trying to negotiate a relationship with all these hinderances. I just wanted to hug Hendy for everything he was going through....Boldt made it understandable and relatable, and heartbreakingly so.
This book was really really good.....and I know you are wondering why I have a 3.5 star on something that I can sing praises about and will easily and happily recommend. Well, I hate....I loathe....I detest made up drama or unnecessary drama in books. It is one of my pet peeves....drama for the sake of drama. This book did not have a ton of it and I am not saying that it did, but there was some added in that just made me roll my eyes while reading it. I know that Hendy is self-conscious about his scarring, and I know that causes some discord between him and Presley as well. It's a hard thing to accept and deal with, and knowing there are people out there that stare and ask questions, that adds to that self-consciousness on every level. What I don't get (and maybe it's just me) is that there are people that would honestly call him out and stand up to him, mocking him, taunting him on the streets? Again, maybe it's just the grown-up in me questioning why any adult would do this....but then to have them run away cowering? Doesn't make sense to me and didn't add value to the storyline in that manner. It's a trend I just don't like to see. I know it enforced his disgust for people to see his face the way it is, but it just struck me as odd, because it happened a few times and that was it -- but it's not an explorable avenue, so it's just a way to make me as a reader pissy. I don't like that, that's all. Personal preference.
And the other thing I honestly didn't enjoy was the over-used side-story of the parents of the main characters that try to dictate or govern their kids' life. Again, not super dominant in this storyline, but it still leaves a salty taste in my mouth. I'm most definitely over that trend because if you are strong in your every day decisions; you run your own business, fall in love, stand up to douche-nozzle men and have a beautiful confidence and make daily decisions in your own life.....why do you let your parents influence or cause problems in it? I just don't get it. I don't. I am *so* glad she had the inner-strength that she did. I found that to be very admirable. She made a decision and stuck to it; professionally and personally. Again, just personal preference.
I love RC's wit. I love her banter. I love the seriousness and the truths behind her characters. She writes everything I look for in a book that keeps me interested and continually turning the pages and seeking more. RC Boldt is definitely on my list of more books that have to be read. I am loving what I've read of her so far. She is a two-time win for me, and she is easily recommendable for me because she has a relatable ease to her storytelling and she makes me swoon while reading her love stories. Bring on Kane's story....I'm ready!!!! I'm hoping his story will be told in Out of Hope, the third book in this series. I need more. I want more. I will have more!!! I am loving these characters of hers!
Boldt's writing just gets better and better. Each book of hers I read seem to fight over the previous books as my favorite. I am not sure how she does it, but she makes me want to read romance. She pulls me in and doesn't let go!
Hendy's story is one of my favorite romance stories. Seriously, how could you not love him and want to see him with his own HEA? Tortured, self-loathing and lost. At the same time, a gentlemen of his own right. I knew from the start of this book that I was in for a great story!
Boldt's writing always seems to have that perfect mix of sexiness, emotions and light-heartedness. Her stories, this one included, are always multi-dimensional. There are enough other undertones with the main story, that I never seem to want to put her books down.
I love love love beauty and the beast theme, but this just wasn't my cup of tea. The guy was previously manwhore and admits that if it isn't for his scars and and other people's (women) reaction to them he would not look at the heroine two times.... For me this is like admitting 'hey, if I wasn't scarred I wouldn't be with you'!! In one sentence he even admits that he would not even look at her (and her wouderful personality) because she doesn't have 'big boobs'. And because of this I think the H is a jerk.
So why 3 stars?? Because I liked the theme, I liked how the h does not care for his face. And at the end I suppose the H loves his h.
