Last week, Cassidy DiRocco had some influence over the vampires that stalk the streets of New York City. She was never completely safe, but with her newfound abilities as a night blood and her honed instincts as a crime reporter, at least she had the necessary skills to survive.
Now, thanks to the injuries she sustained while saving her brother from a fate worse than death, she’s lost her night blood status just as another crime spree hits Brooklyn. Dozens of people are being slaughtered, and each victim bears the Damned’s signature mark; a missing heart.
Cassidy will need the help of all her allies to survive the coming war, including the mysterious and charismatic Dominic Lysander, Master Vampire of New York City. But as his rival’s army threatens his coven and his own powers weaken with the approaching Leveling, even Dominic’s defenses might not be enough protection.
With nothing left to lose, Cassidy must find the power inside herself to save Dominic, his coven, their city, and survive.
Melody Johnson is the author of the “out of this world” Love Beyond series and the gritty, paranormal romance Night Blood series published by Kensington Publishing/ Lyrical Press. The City Beneath (Night Blood, book 1) was a finalist in the “Cleveland Rocks” and “Fool For Love” contests.
Melody graduated magna cum laude from Lycoming College with her B.A. in creative writing and psychology. Throughout college, she wrote contemporary love stories, but having read and adored the action and dark mystery of vampires her whole life, decided to add her fingerprint to the paranormal genre.
“The vampire sub-genre of paranormal romance has always been one of my favorites to read,” says Melody. “But it was just as important to me to explore the monster within the man as it was to reveal the man within the monster. The juxtaposition of good and evil and all the gray in between that composes a person is just as unique in my vampires as they are my human characters, and because of that, my heroine has more man troubles than she ever bargained for.”
Melody's unique perspective on vampires lends fresh bite to a classic paranormal genre. In addition to a reimagined transformation—the requirement of night blood—vampires have gargoyle-looking, vicious day forms, an orgasmic bite, and as the series progresses to Sweet Last Drop (book 2), a mindless, rampaging, zombie-like breed is introduced. Melody is constantly upping the stakes, and Day Reaper (book 4) is no exception.
Beyond the Next Star is an exciting branch from Melody's paranormal romance roots, keeping the dark grit from her Night Blood Series and taking it to new worlds. Told from the dual perspectives of both human pet and alien owner, Melody's story weaves a slow-burn romance that explores the bonds of love in all its forms, navigating the main characters’ relationship in delicate stages from oblivious ownership to woke, romantic love.
“Reading and writing romance is my life’s passion, but I’m particularly excited to add my voice to the sci-fi romance genre,” says Melody. “This book allowed me to explore the unconventional parameters that constitute home and family, something my heroine was denied in childhood and torn from in adulthood. But as she discovers through her adventure on Lorien, a home isn’t built with a foundation of concrete but of love.”
After moving from her northeast Pennsylvania hometown for some much needed Southern sunshine, Melody now works as a digital media coordinator for Southeast Georgia Health System’s marketing department. When she isn’t working or writing, Melody can be found swimming at the beach, reading at the pool, and exploring her new home in southeast Georgia.
Eternal Reign by Melody Johnson Night Bloods series #3. Paranormal vampire variety wars. Best read in series order. Begins shortly after the events in the second book. Vampires are killing by the dozens in New York City though the general public doesn’t know vampires exist. Cassie DiRocco is a reporter. She was a Night Blood but has lost her power. She was able to save her brother but he doesn’t seem to be eating or recovering. Dominic Lysander still helps Cassidy but even he’s not sure what or who is killing and stealing hearts.
Dominic seems to want to pull away from Cassidy but he’s drawn to her. Cassidy feels responsible for everyone but doesn’t have the power she needs. As she investigates these grisly murders, the world opens to more than just vampire. Dark, bloody, and lots of layers of secondary characters in this third book.
There were parts of this where I really wanted to slap the protagonist around the head with a wet kipper. I vacillated in this novel between wanting to kill her, slap her, mouth off at her or drown her in the bath. Maybe all at once. It took about one third of the book until I actually started liking it, then another third where she annoyed me again, and then on and off in the last segment where I liked it again, so let me assure you there was plenty of skimming. Truly, at times I couldn't work out whether she was completely stupid, had no imagination or foresight, or whether she was just a prejudicial bitch. How her love interest didn't strangle her himself, and believe me he had good reason to, he didn't so apparently he was still up for a shag. I tell you, I hope she was worth it, just because you might be attracted to someone doesn't mean you have to like them.
After all is said and done, I still want to see how the author carries on the series and what attitude is going to prevail, so I'll be a sucker for the next book.
Book three in the Night Blood saga is every bit entrancing and addictive as the previous two! Again, it is written as it could be read as a stand-alone but I believe it would be best read in sequence as there are so many details, which add to the story’s development. Cassidy DiRocco returns to her New York City home with Nathan to resume their lives with some type of normalcy, only to discover the impossibilities. Nathan struggles finding his place after his rescue. Cassidy fortifies their apartment against Vampires, and continues investigating crime scenes with the police department. Until, the city is rocked of its axis by attacks she has seen before in Erin, New York—only so much worse! All the while, Cassidy and Dominic’s relationship develops further and further while their combined efforts to save their city. Cassidy’s continues her efforts to publish the article exposing vampires to the public of New York. Dominic faces his Leveling and awaits the challenge of the vampire that wants to become the new master, Jillian. Resulting in catapulting their entire drama filled existence to the fierce attention of the Day Reapers. It was almost a race to finish the book because I couldn’t wait to find its resolve! This book ends on a cliff hanger, only making you eager for more—I cannot wait for the next and final series book, Day Reaper!
"Eternal Reign" is book three in the "Night Blood" series by Melody Johnson. I have been enjoying getting to know Cassidy and Dominic more. My favorite scene was when they were fighting the monster, and then Dominic had Sevris show Greta how things work. The ending is a huge cliffhanger, and book four will be read real soon. I may have stayed up late to keep reading. This book sucked me right in, and I just couldn't quit reading.
You need to read this series in order. I feel there are details from the first two books that are needed to truly appreciate this book. This book starts off shortly after where book two ends. This book pulls you in. It does end on a cliffhanger so be prepared.
As Eternal Reign opens Cassidy is still dealing with the repercussions of her visit to the Erin vampire coven. She is no longer a Night Blood, at least for the time being. Her brother Nathan is no longer a soulless killer vampire, but he is definitely not back to normal. The Leveling is approaching – the time when Dominic has only human strength and his enemy Jillian will be powerful enough to overthrow his control of the New York coven. As if things were not bad enough, Jillian and her Damned vampires have restarted the killings in NYC. Cassidy is struggling with her feelings for Dominic and with her guilt over not letting people know about vampires and the danger the damned pose. Even though he is losing his strength as the Leveling approaches Dominic is devoted to Cassidy even when he should have let her go. The action is intense as the group faces a seemingly unbeatable enemy. As the book progresses new enemies present themselves and new allies are found. The book ends with a major twist and a massive cliffhanger. I recommend this book and series. The story develops over the course of the series so the books should be read in order.
Cassidy has lost her night blood abilities and is trying to navigate the world with the upcoming leveling for Dominic. This story takes some interesting twists and turns while Cassidy tries to figure out how to help Dominic and keep her friends and family safe. There have been more deaths that look like they were done by animals. She will need all her wits to figure out a way out of this one! Great pacing and the story is really building and I am looking forward to the next book!
I enjoyed this book in the series the most so far. We are finally seeing Cassidy's romance take shape and her personal relationships with her brother and best friend get tested and reshaped. I still feel so bad for Cassidy overall, but I love her wit and spirit. I am so excited to progress to the finale in this series!
Definitely recommend reading this series it is very good and you will immerse yourself in the books and find it very hard to put down! I can’t wait to start the last one Day Reapers and hope for the best outcome.
Eternal Reign is written in the 1st person narrative. But that didn’t deter me from reading the book. Eternal Reign is the second book in Melody Johnson “Night Blood Series”. This book isn’t a stand-alone. I assume this book takes place after what happens in The City Beneath. Because we learn that Cassidy DiRocco doesn’t remember Dominic. But, so often someone would say his name and then the fog on her brain would clear. With the Leveling taking place in a few days and both Dominic and Cassidy has either lost their powers or losing them, the leveling is going to be one-sided and both our characters will be facing certain death. It was surprising that I did like this book, outside, the fact that the book just ending abruptly. The plot will have you captivated and the chemistry between Cassidy and Dominic was well-developed. Would I continue reading this series? Yes, just to find out how the Leveling turns out, also, I am a big sucker for Vampires. (No pun intended) :)
This is my review of Eternal Reign by Melody Johnson. This arc was kindly given to me by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own. The beginning of this review does not contain spoilers and I will indicate when spoilers come in.
This novel is the third book in the Night Blood series. If you haven’t already read the previous two books in the series I recommend doing so, as this is a series that I have really enjoyed so far. As with the previous two books, this novel is told in the first person narrative through the eyes of a reporter, Cassidy DiRocco. This novel begins right where book two ended, and the reader is wondering how the ending of the previous book will be resolved. Dominic’s Leveling is drawing ever closer, and because Jillian is still at large things do not look good for him. Cassidy finally begins to see Dominic as a man, not just a monster. There is also humour in the novel, particularly when Dominic shows up to a crime scene as an animal expert, which gives Cassidy a shock. This was a book that I thoroughly enjoyed, and I would recommend it to both teenagers and young adults, giving the book a rating of four and a half stars.
----Spoilers from this point onward----
As I have mentioned in my reviews of the previous books in this series, I don’t like the character of Ian Walker. The absence of his character in this book was a good thing, and I don’t feel that the book was lacking without his presence.
I admired Cassidy in this novel for the way she helped out the night bloods that were turned into vampires. Even though they were a danger to her she still did her best to teach them how to survive. Ronnie then pays back the favour, saving Cassidy’s life near the end of the book. I also admired how she finally tells Meredith the truth about vampires, despite how dangerous this truth is. She also stands by her brother even when she finds out that he is still one of the damned. It is her love for him that helps Nathan to control his urge to kill.
Even as Dominic’s powers began to fail, he still does his best to protect both Cassidy and those she cares about. It’s clear that they both have changed significantly since they met, Dominic’s actions are no longer motivated by greed but instead by love.
We also learn why Cassidy has been so strong as a nightblood. She has the potential to become a Day Reaper, a rarer, stronger type of vampire. The high Chancellor is eager to turn her and only spares her life because of her potential.
The ending of the novel was one of my favourite parts. I can’t wait until the next book comes out to answer the cliff hanger at the end of this novel- will Cassidy become a vampire?
I have not read the first 2 book but after book 3 I will be going back and reading it. This story was really intriguing and has a lot of twist and turns and the story line was fabulous. Cassidy's character was sassy with the stuff to back it up!! Dominic's character took a little longer to but by the end of the book he had me. :).

Review:
I liked this story, but this is a case where reading them out of order really hurt my reading enjoyment.
I thought the story and the premise were really good, I just had a hard time because I had not read the first two books in the series.
The story is full of action and violence as the Leveling is approaching (which I figured out after reading enough of the story). I loved Cassidy and Dominic as a couple. Through most of the book the sexual tension is through the roof between these two. I also loved how these two look out for each, sometimes at the risk to themselves. It is a continuing story, so there is a semi-cliffhanger ending. Also, it is told in the first person if that is something that affects your reading enjoyment.
Great story, now to go back and read the other two books that came before.
4Stars
*I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this book provided by the publisher.*
Cassidy has come such a long way since the first book, yet its only been a few weeks. From knowing nothing about Vampires, she’s now gained so much first hand knowledge and yet still I get the sense she’s far more to learn. Dominic is facing his levelling, a vulnerable time when usually his second would be there for him but Gillian isn’t, she betrayed him recently and she’s looking set to take over from him. She’s amassing an army of Damned vampires, fierce, blood thirsty creatures that have little reasoning, just an instinct to kill and feed. People are dying each night, the police have no idea what they are facing, Cassidy can’t reveal all through her reporter job, much though she’d love to, and if it continues the city will face an onslaught of deaths that makes the current ones look like nothing. Dominic is losing his powers fast, but having to hide it from the coven, vampires gravitate to the strongest and he needs as much support as he can against Gillian, Cassidy isn't a night blood anymore after her last injuries, and the battle is looming up.
Its another fast paced story, death, blood and gore, but with enough strength in the characters to lift it for me from a horror to something I enjoyed. I can’t take blood and gore if there’s not some way of lightening the story, some romance to balance all the hate. Dominic clearly has feelings for Cassidy but she’s not admitting hers to him, or even to herself. Now in this novel she needs to make some hard choices, about her job, her friends, her feelings for Dominic. I love the way Dominic treats her with respect even when he must find her incredibly frustrating – I know I would, with her insistence on “the people’s right to know”....knowing what faces his people if knowledge comes out. Historically humans have sought to destroy any one, any group they feel aren’t human, looking at what we’ve done to witches in the past, and of course even those of a different religious persuasion and yet she seems to think that nothing bad will happen if vampires are exposed. I can’t decide if she’s deluded, naive or just plain stupid :-)
Dominic has a typical vampire regard for humans, they’re just not important compared to his coven, he’s out to protect them at any cost even if it means killing people. He doesn’t kill indiscriminately, doesn’t kill to feed for example, but thinks nothing of killing to protect his people if he feels there’s no other option.
There’s so much going on here, the story of the Levelling, the quest for Master of the city, the Damned vampires and now the Daywalker involvement, and among all that there’s the romance that’s slowly developing between Cassidy and Dominic. Its another story I was glued to, really enjoyed and damn it, that ending...arrgghh...I hate when authors do that. #nocliffhangers
Stars: Five, another terrific read and c’mon, after that ending, I really hope the next book is soon!

Dominic was the Master Vampire of NYC. Cassidy nearly lost him last week and she actually preferred her life with Dominic in it. Cassidy had completely lost the protection and mental strength of her night blood. Cassidy hadn’t seen Dominic in five nights not since he entranced his name from her mind and confirmed her worst suspicions that she was no longer a night blood. Meredith had been at Cassidy’s when Dominic showed up and Cassidy went on the rooftop to talk to him but when Cassidy went back downstairs Cassidy was gone. Cassidy had several messages from her boss Carter there had been a murder and Meredith had already left to go to the sight waiting for Cassidy but taking her pictures while she waited. As Cassidy was about to leave there was a knock at the door it was Ronnie who she had met when she went to upper N Y and Ronnie had been turned into a vampire against her will. But she looked really bad. Ronnie said her and the others that had been forcibly turned did not know how to use mind control and were starving. Cassidy knew the others also - Logan, Keagan, Theresa, and Jeremy but they needed to learn mind control from someone. But at least Ronnie gave her back Dominic's name. Without night blood Cassidy had no longer had the potential to transform into a vampire. Cassidy no longer had the quality that Dominic held in high esteem he had planned to use as leverage during the Leveling: the one night every seven years that he lost his strength and abilities as Master Vampire to his potential successor allowing a new master to rise to take his place. Without the night blood she couldn’t help him survive the coming battle to keep control of his coven. Cassidy’s best friend Meredith and wing woman at the Sun Accord where they worked. Nathan was her brother and had been monosyllabic and near bulimic since returning to the city. Cassidy hoped Nathan might keep his food down this time. Then they could gradually introduce warm food and protein back into his diet but no such luck. Yet Nathan had said “ It probably would be best to answer the door of your own will ”, then he added “ he’ll make it worse for you otherwise”. If Cassidy didn’t open the door Dominic probably would force her to grant him entrance. Five days and Nathan could not keep anything down but water. Cassidy had a bad relationship with her ex Adam. But if Cassidy didn’t think of something she’ll have to saved Nathan from being damned for nothing to lose him to starvation. Nathan and Cassidy were anything but normal sibling. Night blood ran in their family genes and Nathan was no exception. Unfortunately they had discovered their heritage separately and attempted to stop the rebel vampires in New York without telling each other. Dominic was Cassidy's ally but that didn’t change who and what he was Dominic had forged a metaphysical bond between them and would have died saving her brother without the linking of their life forces. To survive they needed Jillian the vampire who had turned Nathan into being into being damned to take the fall for exposing vampires. As the Day Reapers will come. The day reapers were members of the council - the governing body who rules the Master Vampires ruling their coven. Their law was final and breaking the law was a death sentence. A night blood transfers into a vampire in three days but on rare occasions when it takes longer a Day Reaper is born. They are more powerful, more adept at mind control, and have heightened sources of abilities that other vampires don’t have including the ability to tolerate sunlight making them perfect judges, and executioners of vampire kind. At least Cassidy knew Dominic's name again. This was an excellent read. I really enjoyed it. All the ups and downs Dominic and Cassidy went through. I loved how three of Dominic's coven stayed loyal to him no matter how weak he got. I also loved how Meredith and Cassidy were co workers but also best friends.I loved how Cassidy stood by Nathan and did whatever she had to for him. But Nathan also stood by her and did whatever he could. The only thing I was a little disappointed with was the end because it was a kind of a cliffhanger in a way. But for some reason it didn’t ruin the story for me and that happens very very rarely!!! So I love the characters and the ins and outs of this story and I highly recommend.
