Sex and Sweet Tea #2

Stubborn as a Mule

Rate this book
Down in Whynot, NC, there are three things that hold true: 1) life moves just a little bit slower, 2) family means everything, and 3) you don’t mess with history.

When his family decides to sell a home that’s been part of their history for over a century, Lowe Mancinkus is madder than a hornet. To add insult to injury, the woman who purchased it is some fancy pants, city girl looking to fix it up and sell it off. Doesn’t matter that she’s sexy as hell or that just being near her gets his blood racing like never before. That home belongs to his family, or at least it did until she came to town.

Well that just won’t do, now will it?

From the moment that she laid eyes on the historical home in rural North Carolina, Melinda Rothschild knew Mainer House was something special. The perfect escape from life in New York City, Melinda signed the papers and set to work restoring the house to its natural beauty. That is until an angry Lowe showed up on her doorstep one day. With a scowl on his handsome, chiseled face. And a shotgun in his strong, muscular arms.

Is it getting hot in here?

Melinda’s about to get a lesson on life in the south, but Lowe is about to learn a lesson of his own – this city girl doesn’t back down from a fight.

I absolutely LOVE Juliette Poe’s writing style!!!

Everything about Stubborn as a Mule worked for me—from the sass and banter to the slow burn and small-town charm. I was completely hooked!

This book had me chuckling, smiling, and even laughing out loud. From the moment I finished Ain’t He Precious?, I had a feeling I’d love Lowe Mancinkus’s story, and I was right. His stubbornness toward Melinda Rothschild, the new owner of his family’s historic Mainer House, carried over into Stubborn as a Mule, immediately landing him in hot water.

Lowe and Melinda were like oil and water. Every time they crossed paths, sparks flew. Honestly, their interactions were absolutely entertaining. Mely, a sassy and feisty New Yorker, is wealthy but surprisingly down-to-earth and incredibly likable. Lowe, on the other hand, is a genuinely good guy—one any mother would be proud to claim. The problem? He didn’t want anyone else moving into the house that held so many memories for his family, and Mely was unfortunately that person.

But when they were forced to work together, the sparks between them turned into something much deeper. Their chemistry was off the charts, and their humor and wit kept the dialogue fast-paced and delightful.

Overall, the book was just a joy to read. From the small town of Whynot, NC, to the quirky characters I grew so fond of in Ain’t He Precious?, to the heartfelt storyline, it all just worked for me. Honestly, I think Stubborn as a Mule was even better than book 1, and I already adored that one!

So, to keep it short: if you love small-town life, slow burns, quirky and nosy characters, great family values, and a couple that genuinely likes each other—THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU!!!

A perfect summer read. Stubborn as a Mule has it all: small town charm, witty exchanges, hilarity, sexiness, and heart.

I had to bite my lip to keep from laughing out loud, but a few chuckles and big smiles were evident to anyone throughout the entire read. But let’s back up a bit. I met Melinda and Lowe at the end of Ain’t He Precious?, the kickoff book in the series. I was sure they’d make a great enemies-to-lovers story as Melinda Rothschilnd declared war on Lowe Mancinkus by taking him to the small town’s court on vandalism charges.

Melinda is a city slicker who just bought the historical Mainer House, which was more than a beautiful structure to Lowe. It was part of his family’s ancestral home and he wasn’t happy about having to let it go. Ergo, the vandalism. But after being sentenced not only to repair the damage but to work on the house for several months together with Mely, they not only acknowledge the attraction between them, but also form a bond they never expected.

I can always count on Sawyer Bennett to deliver enjoyable books with loveable characters, a wonderful plot, lots of sexiness and in this series’ case the wonderful southern charm and hospitality of Whynot, NC. Every character goes for broke hilariously and here’s a good place to add that this book is told in its majority by the main characters but Bennett injects this story with humor by including several “Gossip Mill” chapters told by different quirky characters, interspersed throughout the story. I thought this concept was novel and fun.

Melinda and Lowe are wonderful together. Of course they start off by butting heads but the grumpy and ornery man is actually hiding a soul that feels deeply and caveman DNA that sometimes takes over which makes him absolutely swoon worthy.
“What’s not to like about the kind of man who shuts a woman up with his lips?”

Stubborn as a Mule is book #2 in the Sex and Sweet Tea series by Sawyer Bennett writing as Juliette Poe. It is a standalone, contemporary romance. It’s deliciously sexy, almost as good as authentic southern sweet tea. Told from various points of view with a happy ending.

Stubborn as a Mule was a very easy and sweet read. A true southern romance full of small town gossip and stolen kissed on the front porch. I really enjoyed reading about Lowe and Mely and seeing them put their differences aside to realize that they were perfect for one another. There was also some humor added to the story in the form of some pretty hilarious pranks, which I loved getting to laugh at. Bottom line, a perfect read for a summer day and a big recommend from me.

I'm very quickly FALLING IN LOVE with Sawyer Bennett's alter ego, Juliette Poe. This is a very different writing style from the erotic words of Ms. Bennett. This is her lighter side, her sweet and swoony side, and I absolutely ADORE IT! I started falling after reading the first book in this series, 'Ain't He Precious?' And then I fell HARD with Lowe and Mely's story! Not only do these stories have INCREDIBLE covers and CUTE titles, they have equally INCREDIBLE characters that are so unforgettable and storylines that will make you laugh, blush, and swoon all over the damn place! After meeting him briefly in Ain't He Precious? I was definitely jonesing for some more Lowe Mancinkus! And boy, Ms. Poe paired him up with a woman who was able to bring him to his knees on multiple occasions.

"...if you ever take off like that again without talking to me, I'll redden your hind end something fierce."

Oh Lowe does have a way with words. His southern charm with a dash of the dirty is just PERFECT for this story! Not only do I love the main characters, but the whole town of Whynot, NC was on my radar from the very start. This small gossipy town is so quirky, ridiculous, and just downright hilarious. Juliette Poe paints quite a picture for this town and it makes me want to pack my bags immediately, so I can have a crack at this town and these colorful characters!

It continuously surprises me that I love these slow-burn, small town romances. If you take a look at the books that I read, they are more on the erotic side, but since I trust the words of Sawyer Bennett, no matter what she is calling herself when she writes it, I'm going to read it and I'm going to LOVE it! This writing style still brings the sexy, but in a more subtle way. It is packed full of tons of sweet, tons of sassy, and a huge helping of romance. I absolutely ADORED this book cover to cover and I can't wait until Ms. Poe brings us back to this fabulous and charming world that she has created!

Sawyer Bennet writing as Juliette Poe has a much lighter feel to her words than her usual contemporary romance vibe. A sweet, southern and charming book STUBBORN AS A MULE is and I had a lot of fun reading it!

I'm always in the mood for a rough around the edges, handsome southern fella. The charm and wit is endearing and Lowe Mancinkus has it in spades. He's all fired up because a fancy New Yorker has come to town and purchased his family home and can't stand someone other than his kin living in it. He does what he can to ensure she flees town and never comes back-but Melinda Rothschild has different plans, and fights hard for what she wants and what she wants is Mainer House. Mely, as her fiends call her (which doesn't include Lowe), will stop at nothing to keep her gorgeous buy of a house to herself. It's sentimental to her as well. She's feisty and funny, smart and savvy, and I really loved her passion.

Speaking of passion-even though Stubborn as a Mule was very PG, Poe still managed to write the connection Lowe and Mely had very well. They were a sweet, cute and a sexy duo who really connected and kept me smiling for the duration of the read. Lowe is just a southern gentlemen with a wiff of alpha and I just LOVED that's about him.

Some of my favourite parts of this book were with all of the sub-characters. Morri, Floyd, Pap, and even Lynette created a dynamic story line which was extremely hilarious and kept me on my toes. I will say, that the last 15% flew by for me and there is a bit of a shocker I didn't see coming and still can't decide if I loved or not, but otherwise I enjoyed the evolution of Lowe and Mely immensely.

I've gone about this series all wrong and started a my book two, but each one can be read as a stand alone with inter-connecting characters that are rich and entertaining and I plan on going back to read from the beginning.

Oh I am completely smittened with Sawyer Bennett’s alter ego, Juliette Poe. There is just something about the Sex and Sweet Tea Series that has me smiling like a fool. Maybe it’s the fact that this series is ridiculously sweet and subtle, which I find refreshing. Or maybe its the fact that it, this series is written by one of my favorite authors. In all honesty, it's all the above and of course Lowe Mancinkus and his stubborn and yet sweet personality.

In this second installment,Stubborn as a Mule . readers are introduced to Lowe Mancinkus, whom we met in Ain’t He Precious. Lowe is very upset that his family historical home was sold off to a rich New Yorker, who is rumored to flip and sell the house. So when he went to go confront the new owner, he is in for a rude awakening when Melinda Rothschild does not budge at all.

6f66a188b353cdf6ce7e423ebc6858 Truth of the matter is, she’s now got me intrigued. I can’t quite remember a woman doing that to me for a very long time.”

Melinda aka Mely bought the Mainer House for a reason and so she wants to restore and renovate the house but it seems Lowe is not giving up without a fight. So when Lowe paints her house trimming, neon pink, it declared war and so she immediately goes to the courthouse demanding Lowe be punished. When the judge decides that Lowe is required to repaint what he destroyed and work 250 hours of labor on the house, Mely is forced to interact with Lowe.

#StubbornAsA Mule

Lowe and Mely immediately butt heads. Lowe loves that he can get a rise out of her but soon the minor arguments leads to them kissing. Yes, so all you enemies to lovers fanatics are gonna love this book as Juliette Poe has readers grinning big as Lowe and Mely finally admitted their attraction to one another. Soon a kiss led to something more meaningful and Lowe discovers the reason why this house is so important to Mely.

Living in a small town like WhyNot, it was inevitable for them to not avoid small town gossip since everyone wanted to know what was going on with WhyNot’s handyman and it’s new resident. It didn’t take long for the gossip to reach Mely. Will Lowe be able to prove Mely that those rumors are not true?

6f66a188b353cdf6ce7e423ebc6858 The way Mely feels in my arms and against my mouth, I’d be a fool to ever take this serendipitous gift for granted.”

Stubborn as a Mule is your sweet sticky as molasses small town romance that was layered with charm, banter, humor, and love. If you are looking for a feel good book, that will leave you happy and satisfied then this book is for you. So sit back, grab some sweet tea and get ready to have your hearts stirred with equal parts of banter and love.

Author Juliette Poe returns to the town of Whynot, North Carolina with the second book in her Sex and Sweet Tea series, Stubborn As A Mule. Enemies, turn to frenemies and finally turn to so much more is this funny, sweet, and sexy small town romance.

Furious that his family sold the family’s ancestral house to an outsider, one from New York no less, Lowe Mancinkus as made a nuisance of himself to Melinda Rothschild, the new owner of Mainer House so much so that he finds himself in court again facing jail time, but instead gets sentenced to two hundred hours of working on the house for restitution something soon both he and Melinda find they don’t mind too much.

Talk about a slow burn romance and it was perfect for this couple; I loved they were forced to work together and through that began to really see each other and grow to appreciate one another. Their banter was both fun and sexy, their interactions grew from tense to intimate, and it was entertaining to watch their feelings change. Mely begins to appreciate small town life and Southern manners with each passing day and falls in love with Whynot and Lowe’s very welcoming family. As Lowe discovers Mely’s reasoning for buying Mainer House, he discovers that she appreciates the past and the history of the home and her family.

As always with small town romances, the secondary characters play a huge part in the story and this one is no different, most notable were Mely’s best friend, a gay, black, drag queen Morris D, Lowe’s sister, Larkin, and Floyd, who runs the town hardware store and is a self appointed town “protector.”

Stubborn As A Mule was completely engaging and I cannot wait for the next book in this series.

We return to the tiny town Whynot, North Carolina but this story focuses on Lowe Mancinkus. He's been angry and hurt that his historical family home the Mainer House has been sold outside his family to a city woman no less. In taking a stand, he gets himself into some hot water a couple of time with a judge and finds his punishment is going to force him to spend time with the out-of-towner to help fix the house.

Melinda Rothschild has her own personal agenda for buying the house. She she can also afford it including the renovations. She is not happy to have Lowe's interference and destruction of her property.

First impressions are not good. He sees her as an Ice Queen. She sees him as a country boy with a bad temper. But as they are forced to spend time together, they begin to see that is not really true. They go from fighting to lusting and liking each other. It's a slow burn, but they have good chemistry. And they've got the whole town's tongues wagging about what will happen with hometown boy, Lowe and the city girl, Mely.

Lowe can be an impulsive hot-head, But he is also smart, thoughtful, loyal, protective, funny, and sentimental. Under his anger and bluster is a god guy who is not afraid to admit when he is wrong. He's a southern charmer with a sexy edge. Mely is a wealthy and from the city, but she can also appreciate the small town history and appeal. She is sassy, strong-willed, and sensitive.

This brings back the curious, nosy, and quirky characters of Whynot we met in Ain't He Precious?. I enjoy Lowe's family and friends. They are fun and interesting. Although sister Trixie is now settled down, there are still several single Mancinkus siblings: Colt, Larkin, and Lakin. Mely's friend, Morri ramped up the fun too. This is a feisty, flirty, sweet, funny story told in both main character's points of view and some from the townies. It pulls you right into the setting and is a comfy, cute, and charming read.

Stubborn As A Mule is a sweet, funny return to Whynot, North Carolina, in a feud over an old house. Lowe Mancinkus is mad his family sold a house that had belonged to the family for over a hundred years. It didn’t matter that it was in disrepair and no one lived there; it was family and it was history.

Melinda Rothschild wanted to restore Mainer House to its former glory, but vandalism stops her in her tracks. Bringing the matter to court only ramps up tension between herself and the vandal -- Lowe. After the judge orders Lowe to repair the house in proper order, Melinda and Lowe are forced to find a solution to the feud between them.

I loved watching these two spar as the slow burn between them continued to build. This was not a fast paced romance, despite the short timeline. But the heat that builds messes with both of their thought processes and has them questioning why they fought in the first place.

The pranks between Lowe and Melinda’s best friend, Morrie, also had me completely entertained. Waiting to see how one would one up the other had me turning the pages almost as fast as watching Lowe and Melinda circle each other.

The small town atmosphere once again plays a role in the build between Lowe and Melinda. Gossip runs rampant through the streets of Whynot, often preceding the characters themselves and often causing unintended consequences. I loved the way this town came full circle in their acceptance of Melinda and her plans for Mainer House.

This was entirely entertaining, from start to finish. I expect light and fun from this series, and that is exactly what is delivered. I was able to read the entire book in one day and found myself torn between racing through it and slowing down to savor.

I'm loving the Sex and Sweet Tea series by Juliette Poe.
Stubborn as a Mule is the second book to be released and I loved it.

Lowe and Melinda/Mely were such fun and entertaining characters.
I loved how these two moved from hating and trying to outdo the other to falling in love and finding their soul mate.

Stubborn as a Mule (Sex & Sweet Tea #2) by Juliette Poe
4 stars!!!

“I am not, however going to make this a pleasant experience for Miss Rothschild…I’m not going to make this easy on her.”

I love Sawyer Bennett and have totally fallen in love with her alter ego, Juliette Poe. Juliette Poe is the lighter, softer side to Sawyer Bennett’s writing and with this series has delivered some honest, real, swoon worthy romances and Stubborn as a Mule is no different. After reading the first book in this series, Ain’t He Precious, I was already intrigued with Lowe Mancinkus and knew that his story would undoubtedly be a good one, and it was. With small town folk, a couple to die for, and a New York drag queen, Juliette Poe delivered something for everyone, hilarious, a little angst, a gorgeous romance all delivered with beautiful writing that will keep the reader invested from the very beginning.

“I mean, what’s not to like about the kind of man who shuts a woman up with his lips?”

From Ain’t He Precious we knew all about Lowe’s love affair with the old family residence, Mainer House. Now that the beloved property is in new hands Lowe is finding it hard to let go of the house and the history that goes hand in hand with it. Having been sentenced to hours and hours of labour to rectify the damage he had caused on his one-man crusade, it isn’t long before he finds himself having to spend more and more time with his arch enemy, the new owner, Melinda Rothschild.

Melinda Rothschild is an extremely wealthy woman, but rather than the trust fund that her family has given her she loves to make her own money flipping houses and through her own well established interior design company. Mainer House is her most recent purchase and most would have been put off by the less than stellar welcome that she has been given, but Melinda is made of stronger stuff. Mainer House is more than just a flip though and as this book progresses I couldn’t help but love Melinda. Melinda is way more than the society rich girl that everyone assumes she is, she is just a normal woman trying to do something for herself. Yes, she could be hard headed, but only when needed and when she thought that someone was doing her wrong. Melinda was incredibly motivated, was a true and reliable friend and was just simply adorable.

Lowe was everything I expected and a whole lot more. Lowe was a hard worker, fiercely loyal and a good ole Southern momma’s boy. What I loved the most though was that he held his hands up when he realised he had made a mistake. The more and more time that he spent in Melinda’s company it was apparent that his first impressions were definitely the wrong ones.

“…I kiss a woman who I am pretty sure was brought into my life for a reason other than taking something away from me. I think I’m actually getting a lot more than I lost.”

These two sizzled on the pages, the chemistry was one that gobbles you up as you become invested in that initial game of push and pull. There is a fine line between love and hate and with these two their constant bickering was just the precursor or starter before the main course. The dialogue and banter as ever was on point and it is this that really injected that spark into the pages. The dialogue flowed with such honesty that I could picture myself in the little town of Whynot totally submersed with the secondary characters, the gossip and all the little businesses that kept this town thriving.

“I’m only here because Lowe is here, and I want to see him. End of story. Or beginning.”

Juliette Poe delivers a slow burn, cute, love/hate romance with fantastic secondary characters, family values, nosey neighbours in a stunning small-town setting. I laughed, I cried, I swooned, everything you expect in a romance. This one ticked a lot of boxes and was a book I couldn’t put down once I had started. Loved it!

I finally met Author Sawyer Bennett's alter ego, Juliette Poe, and oh was this a different side of Sawyer! Where Sawyer Bennett's books are hot and heated, Juliette Poe's are more sensual, soft, and slow. Juliette Poe's latest sensation transports you to the sweet, small-town South where tradition, history, grace, manners, and more rule. Stubborn as a Mule is SASSY and SWEET SOUTHERN GOODNESS!!!

Beautiful Meli is a wealthy New Yorker relocates to a small North Carolina town to chase down her past and slow down her life. I loved her smartness and sass!

Meli never thought she'd encounter a roadblock and very unwelcoming party in the form of hot, Southern man candy, Lowe. I could not help but chuckle at their heated and humorous banter. Meli and Lowe are Yankee ice meets Southern heat who MELT together!

What's not to like about a man who shuts a woman up with his lips?

These opposites can't help but attract, and oh did connection ignite like fireworks!

"What are you interested in?"

"Not what," he says without pausing in his stride or looking back at me. Yet, his words are meant only for me as he adds on, "Who."

Lowe, this Southern gentleman, made me both blush and swoon! I LOVED Lowe!!! I could not help but read his lines with a Southern accent, one way stronger than my slight one.

Stubborn as a Mule SWEPT ME AWAY! I LOVED the softer side of Sawyer Bennett writing as Juliette Poe. ENCHANTING and ENDEARING, this love story is the perfect Summer romance! Stubborn as a Mule is a SLOW BURN of SASSY and SWEET SOUTHERN GOODNESS!!! This Southern gal approves!!! ❤️

"I don't question what we've got, only what we're going to do with it. And I'm here to tell you, we're going to do something with it."

💋💋💋💋 sweet Southern kisses

This is the second book in the Sex and Sweet Tea series. The books follow the Mancinkus family. It can be read as a stand alone but we do have some story and characters from the first book pop up in this one.

This is a wonderful enemies to lovers book. Lowe and Melinda HATE each other from the start. Lowe is ticked his family sold their legacy home. Melinda and the historic home fall under his cross hairs as he tries for vengeance.

Things seem pretty grim for our couple. But add in a meddling judge, lots of town gossips, a well meaning best friend, and Lowe's continued need to make sure this home keeps it's original charm. Yeah. We get a sweet, southern, small town romance. Just a joy to read this one. A nice slow build on the romance. Mely and Lowe were just meant to be and it's the house that brings them together.

Great series. Light on the steam but heavy on character development and love. Of course Juliette Poe aka Sawyer Bennett doesn't write bad books. Love them all! More coming soon with this family. I can't wait!

We all remember 33 year old Lowe from his sister's Trixie's book.
He's one of 5 Mancinkus siblings living in Whynot, North Carolina. His siblings are a vet, a lawyer, a farmer and a bakery owner.
Carpenter/town handy man Lowe has recently been arrested for trespassing and destroying private property!
The family had to sell the old & empty Mainer House in town, because renovating it would've been too expensive. But Lowe loved that house. He hates that some stupid New York lady bought it to destroy all the old charm and sell it again.
But that's not Mely's plan. She's in town to stay. She fell in love with the house and its history.
And she also might fall for the carpenter who has been ordered by the judge to work on her house for 250 hours!
She hates his guts .... but he's not really all that bad, now that she's getting to know him and his reasons for doing what he did.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO MELY & LOWE?
WILL THERE BE A HEA???
READ THE BOOK TO FIND OUT ☺

Another adorable romance in this great series!!!

Such a sweet and cute and hilarious love story!

Everything is sweet in that town! (Especially Lowe's sister Larkin's bakery! ☺)
And now a stranger from New York is in town - and she brought her extremely colorful gay bestie with her. Hilarious!!!

Lowe's adorable grandpa and some other gossiping townspeople get their own POV every once in a while! LOL!
Lowe's whole family is awesome too. There are still lots of siblings with interesting stories to tell!!!

This was a great southern romance, about the cutest town and its people! I loved it!

Also - even though I knew going in that it was a sweet little romance ... I missed the sexiness. It's done like that on purpose of course, but I don't like that fading-to-black thing once we get naked! ☺

STUBBORN AS A MULE was such an adorable & sweet & funny love story! Run to your nearest amazon for your own Lowe - this one is MINE - and the whole town btw. is MINE too!!!! Without the mosquitos, you can have those! ☺

Well, just like book 1, this is another honest to goodness happy, feel good book that left me all warm and fuzzy. Enemies to lovers, we follow Lowe Mancinkus who has been ordered by Judge Bowe to fix up his beloved Mainer House after he made a few unwanted changes to it following its sale to rich New Yorker Melinda Rothschild. Written in dual POV with a few chapters from additional character’s POV, the story was funny, romantic and the writing was just perfect. All the characters from Whynot are very small town and highly amusing, and Mely has to learn to adjust to all the small town gossip, as does her best friend Morri when he comes to visit (Morri by the way is hilarious). Lowe is a perfect gentleman, super sexy and with just the right amount of alpha. Mely is his perfect partner in every way. Fantastic characters, laugh out loud moments and a superb slow burn romance. I can't wait for book 3. A was provided with an advanced copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

STUBBORN AS A MULE has all the makings of a delightful and entertaining enemies-to-lovers romance and coupled with the Southern setting, sounds like the perfect way to enjoy a summer weekend.

Lowe Mancinkus loves the history of his family and the ancestral home is a big part of that, so when his family decides to sell that home and to an outsider no less, he expresses his disappointment at that decision in troublesome ways, leading to a lengthy sentence in the form of his labor to the new owner. Lowe is determined to use this enforced labor to be a thorn in her side, but close proximity with her has made him aware of other, much friendlier feelings for her which he wants to explore.

Melinda Rothschild has her own sentimental reasons for being in Whynot, North Carolina, and purchasing and restoring the Mainer House is a labor of love. Lowe may have started out as nothing but a nuisance but working so closely with him has made her aware of him as a man, an awareness she knows he shares. Mely is not exactly sure what her plans are or if she intends to settle in Whynot, but Lowe is more than willing to convince her in ways that they both will enjoy.

When I think of the South, I think of sweet tea, fried foods and sweltering summer days, and those images coupled with Lowes and Mely, and the assorted cast of secondary characters in the small town, as well as a very active gossip mill, had me primed to enjoy this offering from Sawyer Bennett's alter ego.

However, it was not to be. Lowe bugged me in the beginning because he went out of his way to be a thorn in Mely's side, a proverbial pulling of her pigtails, if you will and not in a good way. Their transition from enemies to friends and lovers felt forced and the only time I felt the chemistry between them was when they ganged up to play pranks on Mely's BFF. In fact, said BFF stole the entire show in the book and every scene with him left me in stitches. I also enjoyed the other residents of the town and was quite upset that Lynette did not get hers to my satisfaction.

All in all, it was an okay read and I'm hoping that my next read in this series will be a better one.

The dynamic between Lowe and Melinda (Melly) was established during Ain't He Precious  with Lowe going out of his way to antagonise the Yankee who dared buy his family home.

Lowe has a desperate need to preserve his family history and the connection he has to Mainer House has been stripped away from him. Although he subconsciously understands the cost of keeping the house was not financially viable for his family, he is too stubborn to let go of his desire to preserve his connection to the house.

Melly also has a connection to Mainer House that only she is currently aware of through her grandmothers recollections prior to her death. As a manes of keeping he grandmothers memories alive, Melly seeks out and purchases Mainer House. Dreaming of a finding a love like the one her grandmother experienced via Mainer House.

Melly and Lowe's bickering and animosity do little to conceal the bubbling attraction between them. It's a case of pulling a girls hair when you like her on the playground lol. One sizzling kiss alters the foundation of the relationship between Melly and Lowe. I loved the slow burn of their relationship, building a strong foundation for the future. Although, being the outsider in a small town as well as the target for a malicious tart causes trouble between Melly and Lowe.

I loved the unique perspectives portrayed within Stubborn as a Mule, not only do we get to see both Melly and Lowe's point of view but also the perspectives of different characters within the towns gossip mill. Melly's flamboyant best friend adds another dynamic to the plot as a whole, especially where tolerance and acceptance are concerned. There are fleeting appearances from the other members of the Mancinkus family within Stubborn as a Mule providing continuity for the series as a whole.

Stubborn as a Mule provides the perfect amount of sass and swoon, showing you can find love in the most unlikely of places even where neon pink paint is involved ;)

This is just what I needed to read. I loved the first book in this series, but this one is even better. I adored Lowe and Melinda and their story which was funny and heartwarming with a touch of angst.

Lowe Mancinkus meets Melinda Rothschild in court. She is suing him for damages on her house. The thing is, it was Lowe's family home until Mely bought it. And he is downright mad it's not apart of his family anymore. So Lowe has to do some time...... at Mainer House, fixing the damages he made. To say they start on the wrong foot is an understatement but the way this couple then fall for each other is so sweet.

Lowe is truly swoon worthy. He is a proper southern gentleman that cherishes Mely and it doesn't take long for him to realize she wasn't the up tight New Yorker from court. She definitely has some sass but also an endearing heart. They both appreciate the history of the house and what it means to each other, and work together to restore it to is former glory.

We get to meet some more of the townspeople in this book which adds to the overall delight of the book. Lowe's family are a big part of his life, and I can't wait to read more about them.

ARC received for an honest review

We met our protaganists Lowe and Mely in the first book in the first book, Ain't He Precious, however you could read Stubborn As A Mule as a standalone, but why would you want to?

Our lovelies are both pig headed and stubborn, which makes for a lot of fun - for those outside their range of fire.

I adore Lowe - in the first book I felt he was a little bit of a spoiled brat, but in this one we get more of why he acts like he does, and it is all kinds of great.

Mely is the outsider moving into town - gah, do I know that feeling, having moved from the city to a small town a while ago. You can't help but like her thought. And when her gay best friend comes to visit, oh he is al sorts of awesome. Reminds me a little bit of LaFayette from True Blood (may he RIP) crossed with RuPaul's Drag Race.

I love the small town vibe, the cute and quirky characters - especially Lowe's family- they just crack me up.

I know Juliette Poe is the sweeter side of Sawyer Bennett, but I did miss the heat that we come to expect from her writing - but that is just me and my pervy side!

Stubborn As A Mule is sweet and cute and adorable, and I can't wait to see what comes next in Whynot.

4.5 Stars

Charming. There really is no other way to start a description of this book. Whynot, North Carolina is a charming town, the people are charming, and the story and characters are, you guessed it, charming.

A lot of the appeal of these stories is the writing, and it is on point. You can't help but enjoy it, and laugh, and feel engaged and connected to the characters, the people in the town, and the story. In a lot of ways, there are a whole bunch of main characters as the town definitely plays a role, and I think you might lose a little of the character development for this, but nothing major enough to alter the way you feel about them, or the story. So, while there may be parts where I wanted a little more of Mely and Lowe, it was balanced fairly well with the rest.

These are definitely the sweeter side of Sawyer Bennett and the sex is fade to black, but the heart, the connection and the romance are all fully there and you enjoy the stories thoroughly. I even read a passage to my husband, as I was laughing by 2% in and was wondering what he would think of it...his response was to burst into laughter, so that answered that.

Lowe and Melinda (Mely) are perfect for one another, and watching them figure this out, well, it is the fun of the book. Well, that and the town. And the writing. And the story.

Ok, so I genuinely enjoyed this book. And, I definitely recommend it.

The second book in the series sends us back to a small town and all the quirky people who live there. Mainer house has been a B&B for generations. but the newest generation let it fall into disrepair. Along comes our heroine who is on a bit of a road trip to put a face on the stories her grandmother told her. In our small town she comes across the dilapidated Mainer House and decides to buy it. She has made a fortune buying and flipping houses. This one she plans to keep.

Enter our hero. His family has become the latest in the line of inheritors. His parents sold it and he was against the idea. When he is arrested after trying to vandalize the old homestead so the new owner will take the hint and leave, he is sentenced 100 hours of work on the house.

A cute love story with adorable characters.

This was a very sweet and cute small town romance! The enemies to lovers and fish out of water tropes were perfect and created some very charming and hilarious moments. Stubborn as a Mule is the 2nd book in the Sex and Sweet Tea series, but can be read as a stand alone.

I really enjoyed Lowe and Melinda (Mely's) transformation from sworn enemies to slow burn lovers. I actually wish there had been a little more love/hate build up, but it really was adorable how they each started to realize that they might not dislike each other after all. Lowe is a Southern gentleman through and through, and I found myself falling for him as the ornery property vandal facade gave way to the lovable and charismatic home town boy. The main conflict and resolution, while predictable, wasn't heavy or drawn out and the other woman drama was the perfect amount of angst. Though there is plenty of innuendo and sexual tension between Lowe and Mely, this is more a fade to black/implied sexy times kind of book.

The city of Whynot, NC is so wonderfully eclectic and is the perfect back drop to this series. It is home to some amazing secondary characters, especially Pap and Floyd. Mely's best friend, Morri, was also a wonderful addition who brought more humor to the story (loved his prank war with Lowe!) and shed light on social issues facing the world today. I thought the nod to the Wicked Horse in Vegas was genius and I chuckled to myself when I saw it. If you're looking for heartwarming and lighthearted small town romances, you don't want to miss this series!

4 Sweet CROWNS

My second trip to Whynot was just as sweet and endearing as the first one. Juliette Poe has really nailed the small town, slow burn romance, and I'm in love with the town and people as much as each of the romances.

Stubborn as a Mule focuses on Lowe and Melly. Lowe, the local, and Melly, the NY transplant, have been at odds since she has bought the family home. Their antagonistic behavior not only puts them in the direct path to each other but also serves as the impetus for their budding attraction. The more time they spend together, the more fun they have. With each passing day, she sees there is more to Lowe than the prankster, and he gets to see that she is more than home flipper.

Melly and Lowe's romance is very sweet. They spend a lot of time together and learn about each other. It is low on steam and not rife with sexual tension, but it is such a fun and light story that it isn't missed.

The pacing of the story is steady, not too slow or fast. The slow burn romance matches the lackadaisical aura of the town. In addition, Melly's best friend adds great comic relief, and he also serves to reveal aspects of Lowe and Melly's characters that were hiding behind their antagonism. While the conflict is not a huge surprise, I did enjoy how Juliette Poe wraps it up and brings these two to their HEA.

The story, just like the previous one, has the perfect balance of fun and romance. Readers will fall in love with the town as much as the inhabitants. Everything about it is absolutely charming.

P.S. I love the nod to the Wicked Horse, my favorite series of Sawyer Bennett's.

5 Star Review of Stubborn As A Mule by Juliette Poe (Sex & Sweet Tea #2)

This was a fun, quick read full of romance, laughter and love of family. This is Lowe Mancinkus and Melinda Rothschild's story and I loved it from start to finish, it was amazing.

Ms. Poe described Whynot in such great detail that I would love to visit. I love the idea of a small town where everyone knows you; although as Lowe and Melinda found out that can be annoying at times.

Lowe is furious when his family decides to sell their historical home Mainer House in town. Even worse Melinda, the woman who purchased the house is from the city and plans to renovate and sell it. Or does she? What she doesn't count on is hot, sexy and angry Lowe, turning up on the doorstep with a shotgun determined to stop her.

Melinda is just as determined not to give in to Lowe and what follows is a sexy tale full of anger, laughs and tension which is extremely well written.

Trixie's grandfather Pap is a great secondary character and I hope he actually gets his own story. In fact, all the characters made me smile and I cannot wait until we visit Whynot, North Carolina again as I am anxious to see who will be next in the series.

Stubborn as a Mule is a sexy, romantic book and I loved it.

I love a good enemy to lovers story and this one didn't disappoint at all. Sweet and Sassy is a great combo when it comes to Mely and Lowe, they both give as good as they get and when Mely's friend is in town for a visit....well, lets just say that Lowe did not expect the feelings he was having before he even met the guy.

***4.5 ‘Small Town’ Stars***

After getting a glimpse of what was going on with Lowe and Melinda in Ain’t He Precious? I knew that a good portion of the start of the book would drive me a little bat shit crazy, and not only was I proven correct, but found that the title was absolutely perfect! There is all kinds of sweet and crazy heat between Lowe and Melinda as they go from enemies to lovers and add in an eclectic mix of characters that populate the small town of Whynot and all you can do is sit back and enjoy the ride.

I’ll admit that I had a bit of a difficult time with Lowe and Melinda in the beginning, Lowe a little more than Melinda, but I got where there were both coming from and was honestly thankful when they both stopped antagonizing each other and made the best of their situation. Lowe has a silver tongue, mix that with a good heart and a hidden mischievous side, which makes it very easy to fall for him. Melinda was raised with the finer things in life and definitely enjoys her creature comforts, but has worked hard and knows how to adjust to new experiences. Their journey to their HEA was rocky, but fun and sweet, though there is a good dose of sexual tension between them from the start and that only grows the longer they are together. The little cluster that happens towards the end had me doing the heavy sigh/shaking of the head thing, but I loved how it all worked out in the end.

This one was a fun ride and I especially loved how Ms. Poe brought the town of Whynot and it’s inhabitants to life in this one. The little side bites were well done and really brought a lot of depth the to story. Pap and his sneaky ways is still my favorite Whynot resident, but I NEED more of Morrie D. He was simply fabulous and I’m hoping we get more of him in the future. And as for that little tease of what’s coming next? I’m definitely looking forward to seeing those two go head to head!

I waited and waited months for this book to come out and let me say, I am NOT disappointed. Stubborn as a Mule starts off with Lowe and Melinda in the court room trying to figure out a punishment for Lowe’s vandalism. The judge has known Lowe and his family for a long time, so when the outsider, Melinda, starts putting up a fight about how much punishment he is actually getting. When the judge finds her to be a nuisance, he summons both of them to work on the house together for 200 hours. When they begin working together, it’s not a surprise that there is chemistry there. Melinda learns the hard way of a town that is so small, running into Lowe’s ex-flings and having to hear all the details. Lowe is falling for Melinda and vice versa. The perfect story yet again.

I should just copy and paste my review of the first in the series. This book was absolutely fantastic. Honestly, it was the perfect sequel. This book had a different premise than the first. The first book was more of a “one that got away” story line, and this one was enemies-to-lovers. It was amazing.

The characters were great. I loved Lowe because even though he acts tough on the outside, he’s sweet and romantic on the inside. I didn’t like Melinda at first. She was just so mean and her attitude was holier-than-thou. However, I loved her by the end. She’s a strong, independent woman that hasn’t been in a relationship in a long time. Again, Melinda learns how it is in a small town. Juliette Poe continues to really bring that home.

Overall, again, a perfect love story about learning how to be patient and kind. Trixie and Ry were mentioned in this book, so it’s important to acknowledge that this series is staying together. I love this series and can’t wait for the next!

If you read AIN'T HE PRECIOUS, the first book in the Sex and Sweet Tea series, you'll remember Trixie needing to save her brother Lowe when he loses his mind over a family house being sold.  In STUBBORN AS A MULE we get Lowe's POV and watch as he finds himself falling for the enemy.

I didn't like Lowe's story as much as Trixie's. It felt like his relationship with Mely was a bit forced.  These were two characters who were practically at each other's throats who very quickly fall for each other.  And when we discover Lowe is one for pulling pranks, it made me wonder why he didn't pull a few harmless pranks on Mely at the beginning.  I would have expected their relationship to change slowly, maybe after he finished the house and they realized they missed each other.

STUBBORN AS A MULE was a fun read, but it lacked some of the spark that I found endearing in Trixie's story.  I wanted the meddling family who helped these two realize what they had.  Instead, we had nosy townspeople who felt like they were more out to keep these two apart than get them together.
