Joanna Berrigan is blow drying her hair when she notices that the outside motion sensor light has been activated. She hopes it’s not her friend stopping by as she’s not in the mood for company. She just wants to relax with a hot cup of tea and a good book. She relaxes when the outside light goes off again. As she makes her way downstairs however, she hears noises …coming from inside the house.
Just then a figure stops out of the darkness…
Erik Thieben arrives home after a rough day at work. However, he has no idea his bad day is about to get much worse. He enters his home and hears Joanna blow drying her hair. He’s happy he’s home. Erik looks forward to snuggling up on the couch with her. Joanna comes downstairs and he sees her before she sees him. She looks at him strangely….then she screams.
He asks what’s wrong but she keeps screaming, yelling at him to get out, begging him not to hurt her.
“Is this supposed to be some kind of joke?”
Erik doesn’t understand why his fiancé is talking to him this way. Everything was fine when he left for work that morning. But now, she looks like she’s terrified of him, like she doesn’t know who he is…
He’s right. She has no idea who he is. To Joanna, he’s a stranger.
“We’re engaged, Jo. We live together.”
He realizes she really doesn’t recognize him.
Joanna has no idea why this man claims to know her. Worse than that is he thinks they are engaged. She thinks he must be a con artist or a stalker maybe? But she knows one thing…

Erik continues to try to reason with her, to convince her. But all of a sudden he realizes something is missing. Actually everything is missing…well everything that belongs to him anyway. Where is his clothing? And everything else he owns? In their bedroom…his blanket, pillow, even his wardrobe is gone.

We slowly learn more about Erik and Joanna. But there are so many questions. Is Joanna having an emotional breakdown of some kind? Is Erik? Why is Joanna suddenly having such strange visions….and violent urges?
Joanna and Erik begin to realize they might be in danger and may need to trust each other in order to stay safe. However, that’s easier said than done….
Can they trust each other? SHOULD they trust each other???
“Strangers” started off really strong but then seemed to slow right down. I started to get a little bit antsy and was having a hard time staying connected to the story. However, it wasn’t long before the tension was amped-up and from then on it was almost non-stop action. I had no idea what was going to happen next. Loss of memory isn’t a new plot line, but I found this part of the story to be quite unique.
The story alternates between Joanna and Erik’s perspective, which I really enjoyed, even if a few of their decisions made me cringe and at times things seemed a bit over the top. But I was pulled along by the story anxious to find out how things were going to end.
Overall, I thought "Strangers" was an enjoyable and entertaining read and I look forward to seeing what Ursula Archer and Arno Strobel write next.

This one had a really great premise, but I think it just wasn't for me. I struggle with reading books where there are two POVs that tell the exact same details of each scene, so it felt very repetitive and caused me to not fully immerse myself in the suspense. I found the ending to be a bit ridiculous and far-fetched, which was disappointing because it felt the authors were going for outlandish twists solely to deter the reader from solving the mystery, not to further the plot or accentuate it in a form. Again, these are just my opinions and I hope that others find it more enjoyable than I did!

it was the first of my vacation reads, it was the worst of my vacation reads...
my vacation was spent visiting my dad, which usually means a week's worth of eating, drinking, and shark movies. one of the films we watched this time was roboshark.
it was... not great. there were two writers credited (jeffery lando and phillip roth*), and every time there was a particularly cheesy moment, i would look over at my dad and hold up two fingers, with incredulous raised-eyebrow glee that it had taken two people to craft such a glorious mess.
this book also has two authors. and while it is not quite as bad as roboshark
it's also not great.
i'll grant that some of the awkward writing - stiff and exposition-heavy, graceless in both dialogue and interior monologues, may result from translation issues, but the resolution/explanation of this psych suspense rattletrap is also a howler, to which no translation excuses apply.
it's a shame, because the premise is good. it is told from two alternating POVs:
a woman is startled by the appearance of a man in her house, a stranger claiming to be her live-in fiancé.
a man is confounded when he arrives home one evening to find all his stuff missing from his place and his fiancée claiming she has never seen him before.
things become more complicated after that - for the characters and the reader both - the situation is bananas enough, but additionally, the pacing drags and then speeds up into a frenzy, the plot is somehow both implausible and predictable, red herrings keep swimming into frame until you yearn for a roboshark to come clean up the set.
if you're looking for a drowsy vacation read, this'll do you, but there are better-written, more satisfying psych suspense novels out there. better shark movies, too.

Ich mochte das Rätselhafte an dieser Geschichte, das Geheimnisvolle. Lange war mir nicht klar, was da nun tatsächlich passiert ist und wer wen belügt oder ob überhaupt gelogen wird...
Es war alles offen und gab immer mal wieder Wendungen. Das Ende hat mich nicht ganz zufrieden zurückgelassen, aber es war okay.

A mesmerizing, truth-finding psychological thriller that was both fast-paced and addictive!
The ultimate he said/she said...with alternating narratives. Who to believe? Joanna and her fiance, Erik have been living together and things are going well until a stranger walks through her door one evening! Joanna's first impulse is to run, hide, or call the police, but wait....Erik is telling her they are engaged! Erik will try to prove to her that he is telling the truth, but who can she trust?
A lot of clues are scattered along the way, as the story progresses and I was pulled right into the frightening ordeal right alongside them. I was right with Joanna during her chapters and then when it was Erik's turn, I was right there with him. Feeling their emotions and following their thoughts about all the bizarre happenings!
I enjoyed the frantic tone and fast pace that had me crazy for answers! The suspense builds with each chapter and it was a quick enjoyable book for me.

2.5 Interesting premise. A woman hears someone in her house, she lives alone and has no one to help her. There is a an, a man who claims he lives with her, in fact her fiance, the trouble is she doesn't remember him, and nothing of his in her her house. Strange, right? Promising?
Unfortunately for me, I felt what follows is one contrived cat and mouse game, one preposterous scenario after another. Yes, it is fast paced, a quick read. However, I really felt nothing for these characters, and so many things didn't make sense, it only half heartedly pulled me in. Did enjoy this authors first endeavor though, so will doubtless try her again.

Strangers begins as Joanna is home alone finishing up her shower when someone is at the door but she ignores it only to hear someone moving inside her home. When confronting the stranger in her home, Erik, he claims to actually be Joanna's fiance all the while she is sure that she does not know him and he must be some kind of stalker that is after her or her father's money.
Just these opening pages alone completely hooked me into this book to where I did not want to put it down at all. Who is lying and who is telling the truth? Strangers by Ursula Archer and Arno Strobel is a psychological thriller that became intense on the opening pages and never let up the action and excitement. The story is told by switching the point of view between the characters so you get to see what both are thinking and feeling at any given time.
Joanna and Erik both come across as believable as the story starts and in a way I couldn't help but feel for them both which made it hard to guess what the truth would end up being. Midway through the book the action picked up even more to toss the pace into high octane overdrive as the twists send the story into another gear. An addictive and hard to put down read but possibly crossing into the unrealistic but still entertaining side at that point. This is definitely one I'd recommend to those that like a fast pace and a lot of action in their thrillers.

I LOVED this book!!!📚💖😄 It had me hooked from the first few pages! I read this psychological thriller in one or two sittings and wanted more! This story was told from a dual perspective of Joanna and Erik! I was at the edge of my seat and kept on guessing throughout the story what was going on!!? The story was action packed and would make a fantastic film in my opinion!🎬💖😎 This book was Dani approved.

Mein zweites Buch von Frau Poznanski. Zum zweiten Mal ein Reinfall. Warum lese ich dann wiederholt ein Buch der Autorin, wenn ich nicht zur Zielgruppe gehöre? Weil ich mich immer mal wieder durch eine Leserunde animieren lasse, einen Thriller zu lesen, denn im Grunde mag ich es auch mal spannend, aber die unrealistische Konstruiertheit der Handlung und die enormen Logikfehler lassen das Lesen oft unfreiwillig komisch erscheinen.
Hier haben wie wieder mal das altbekannte Mittel der Amnesie einer Hauptperson, mit der wir gemeinsam durchs Dunkle tappen auf der Suche nach der eigenen Vergangenheit. Da das aber reichlich abgedroschen wurde, insbesondere durch Sebastian Fitzek, muss also ein neuer Grund für den Gedächtnisverlust her. Joanna erkennt ihren Verlobten Erik nicht mehr, als der abends von der Arbeit nach Hause kommt. Sie denkt, er wäre ein Einbrecher. Da die Geschichte in stets wechselnder Sichtweise der Beiden geschrieben ist, ist das Buch auch spannend, auch gibt es nichts am Sprachstil zu meckern. Es ist flüssig geschrieben und ein Pageturner bis zum Ende. Auch bei mir. Doch Unterhaltsamkeit ist für mich nur eines von vielen Kritieren, nach dem ich ein Buch beurteile. Die Sinnhaftigkeit muss schon auch durchgängig gewahrt bleiben. Ich werde im Spoiler am Ende meine Kritikpunkte konkret beschreiben. Wenn man sich die Spannung bewahren will, sollte man sie erst am Ende lesen.
Die Geschichte wäre noch akzeptabel geblieben, wenn es bei einem Kammerspiel geblieben wäre, meinetwegen auch unter Einbeziehung von Freunden oder Kollegen. Aber die Autorin zieht aus der Lostrommel der Thrillermotive wahllos zwei Hände voll Themen, mischt sie im zweiten Teil des Buchs kräftig durcheinander und plötzlich wird aus einem spannenden Psychogramm eine Art Weltverschwörung mit Blut, Gemetzel und Sekten. Aberwitzig schlecht.

Strangers is told in split narrative form using Joanna and her "fiance" Erik's perspectives. The chapters were super short, which I loved, but the split narrative was bringing me down at the beginning. I love the idea of a split narrative, but the only problem in this scenario is that I did NOT love that it was the exact same scene just from the other person's perspective. Having to go through everything twice seemed really tedious and unnecessary. However, that did end up changing as the book went on and I liked it much better. I also found it interesting that this book is set in Germany. I'm half German and my husband is full German so that was an interesting touch for me. Even though in the grand scheme of things, it isn't that big of a part of the book besides what happens in Munich.
A lot of reviewers have said that the beginning started off stronger than it ended, but I had the opposite feelings. For some reason I didn't love the beginning and I had a terrible time staying focused. That may have had something to do with reading the exact same scenes twice, but for whatever reason I was struggling. I definitely felt immersed when I got interested though. The scenes were more vivid to me and I felt like I was right there with Erik and Joanna. I also laughed a few times, and knowingly smirked at my book more than once.
Sadly I didn't really care about any of the characters, and I think that is because they don't have a whole lot of depth. Erik kind of fell flat for me as a character, because what kind of person tries to be controlling over a person that has forgotten them? Especially a fianceé! Ok guy, I get that you are heartbroken/freaked out, but that doesn't mean you take it out on her. Lapse of memory or not, Erik drove me nuts because he was acting crazier than Joanna and trying to keep her supposed memory loss under wraps. I can't really say why I didn't love Joanna. I just feel like you don't find out enough about her, and you don't really explore her as a character either. None of the characters seemed too deep to me, but I wouldn't mind if at least the main characters were explored more.
The book also turned into something I wasn't expecting at all. There was even a weird almost love triangle?? Plus a sex scene that I wasn't expecting in the least. I thought that the end had a movie feel to it as there was a big finale like something out of an action movie. The epilogue was very interesting as well, if not slightly frustrating for me.
So to recap, my biggest issues with the book were:
1. How long it took for me to get into it (though again, I was the opposite of like everyone on this).

There are a lot of people I know who didn't even finish this book, but I recommend checking it out for yourself. There were a few things that bugged me, but once I got into the story I was hooked. Plus the writing is very good.

Final Thought: Strangers was definitely different from anything I have ever read, and I didn't find myself wanting to skim any of it (even in the beginning!). There are a lot of people I know who didn't even finish this book, but I recommend checking it out for yourself. There were a few things that bugged me, but once I got into the story I was hooked. Plus the writing is very good.

Puh schwieriges Buch. Zuerst einmal hatte ich etwas ganz anderes erwartet... Etwas in Richtung 'Gone Girl' vielleicht.
Die erste Hälfte zog sich dann sehr, weil im Prinzip nichts passiert...
Dafür wurde es dann in der zweiten Hälfte äußerst turbulent. Ich hatte das Gefühl, dass die beiden Autoren da wild alle möglichen Themen durcheinander mit in die Geschichte geworfen haben. Es wirkte alles etwas unstrukturiert und nicht komplett bis zum Ende hin durchdacht. Meiner Meinung nach gab es leider auch ein, zwei kleine Logikfehler und es wurde zum Ende hin nicht alles zu meiner vollen Zufriedenheit aufgeklärt. Ich konnte manche Handlungen und Zusammenhänge doch nicht so recht verstehen.
Weniger wäre bei diesem Buch wohl mehr gewesen, da mir der Schreibstil der beiden und die Grundidee der Story echt ganz gut gefallen hat. Es war auch nicht vorhersehbar, aber für meinen Geschmack leider trotzdem etwas am Thema vorbei...

STRANGERS by Ursula Archer, Arno Strobel - Thank you so much to Minotaur for providing my free copy.
This was an odd duck of a book. The things I loved about this book would’ve easily made it a five star read but what I didn’t like dropped the rating down significantly.
Here’s what I loved: the writing style. The structure of the novel included alternating points of view from Joanna and Erik and it is SO compelling. Yes, they are of the same situation from different perspectives, but that is the best part. I could not wait to read what happened next! The character development is exquisitely done and I felt that fear and paranoia the author was going for. The author does a great job writing a story where you can not figure out who or if anyone is lying—it is so well done.
The issue I have is with the ending, which of course affects the central plot line. It felt as if the story went from A to Z without touching the letters in between. I was enjoying the book, going along, then boom... awkward ending. I can’t tell you why because it would spoil the book, but it seemed very cliche and a bit out of place. And here’s the thing: I like the book. I just didn’t love it. I do recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a fast paced thriller; seriously, I read this in one sitting. Despite the flaws, I would definitely read another book by this author.
All in all, I had a great time reading with Instagram’s @blackheartreads book club! Can’t wait for the next one!

Strangers started off with a lot of promise, but it got really messy and ridiculously implausible. Joanna is at home alone, when a man she doesn’t recognize comes into her home with his own key and tries to convince her that he is her fiancé. The set up is very clever as Joanna and Erik move back and forth between doubting each other and themselves. It’s especially clever because the narration consists of short chapters alternating between Joanna and Erik’s points of view. But I really didn’t like how the plot unfolds — it gets bogged down in a lot of pointless action and too much schmaltz. And I really didn’t like the ultimate explanation for the fact that Joanna doesn’t recognize Erik — it was way too improbable. Good set up, but disappointing delivery. Not the best way to start 2018, but I have 364 days left to read books I enjoy more. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an opportunity to read an advance copy.

Ένα από τα καλύτερα ψυχολογικά θρίλερ που έχω διαβάσει! Σου κεντρίζει το ενδιαφέρον από τις πρώτες κίολας σελίδες και συνεχίζει έτσι μέχρι το τέλος!
Μου άρεσε που τα κεφάλαια εναλάσσωνται ανάμεσα στους δύο πρωταγωνιστές με την οπτική γωνία του καθενός και τα συναισθήματα τους για τη κατάσταση που βιώνουν χωρίς να γίνεται κουραστική η επανάληψη σε μερικά σημεία που χρειάζεται. Σαν αναγνώστης έχεις τόσα ερωτήματα όπως για το ποιος από τους δύο έχει δίκιο αλλά και τι κίνητρο μπορεί να έχει ο ένας από τους δύο για να δημιουργήσει την όλη κατάσταση. Έχει αρκετά γρήγορο ρυθμό και μία πιστική εξήγηση για τα όσα συμβαίνουν στη ζωή των δύο πρωταγωνιστών Τζοάνα και Έρικ που συμπάθησα σαν χαρακτήρες και ήθελα ένα καλό τέλος για τους δυο τους!
Πράγματα που δε μου πολύ άρεσαν είναι η τσαπατσούλικη δουλειά στην απόδοση κειμένου από τον εκδοτικό που σε κάποια σημεία ήταν σαν να έχει κενά στο νόημα κάποιων προτάσεων. Επίσης που ένα, δύο ερωτήματα δεν εξηγήθηκαν πλήρως.
Σαν σύνολο είναι ένα υπέροχο βιβλίο που προτείνω να το διαβάσετε και να μη μένετε κολλημένοι μόνο σε ότι είναι της μόδας! ;-)
One of the best psychological thrillers I have ever read! It stimulates your interest from the very first pages and continues like this until the end!
I liked that the chapters alternate between the two protagonists with each one's point of view and their feelings about what they are experiencing without tedious repetitions in situations that were necessary.
As a reader you have many questions as to which one of the two is right and what motivation one of the two may have to create the whole situation.
It is pretty fast pace and has a logical and believable explanation as to what and why it happens in the lives of the two protagonists Joanna and Eric that I liked as characters and I wanted a happy ending for both of them!
Things that I did not like very much is the sloppy work in the editing of a text by the publisher which in some occasions seemed to have gaps in the meaning of some sentences due to missing words or because there were words that didn't belong there. Also there were one or two questions that I felt were not fully explained as to whom and why it happened but weren't so crucial to spoil my reading of the story.
Joanna claims to have never seen Eric before in her life. He claims they love each other and are engaged... Hope you read the book to find out who's right!

Just when you think that you've read every type of thriller-mystery novel plot possible, Ursula Archer and Arno Strobel throw us a curveball with
Strangers
. Seriously, if you think the show 24 has too much non-stop chaos, you haven't seen anything yet. The story starts off with Joanna Berrigan, daughter of one of the richest people in Australia, residing in her house in Germany. Joanna is in the midst of talking to her friend Ela about her friend's deadbeat boyfriend Richard and getting ready for the night. However, later that night Joanna is caught off guard by a stranger, who claims to know Joanna. Not only does he claim to know Joanna, but claims to be her fiancé Erik. Joanna is completely terrified and stunned—who is this man? How does he have a key? Why does he know so much about her? While trying to focus on this confusing predicament, both Joanna and Erik realize that they are in a situation that is much deeper than a case of amnesia. With both their lives at stake, Joanna and Erik must learn to trust each other if they want to survive.
My review for Strangers must be vague in order for you to enjoy it and devour it as fast as I did. Less than 24 hours later and I am still thinking about the ending. This was my first read by Ms. Archer and Mr. Strobel, and I was pleasantly surprised to find out that they are international best seller authors in Germany. The pacing of this book is key to your enjoyment. It starts off like a car in a drag race— a fast, adrenaline rush thriller with no mercy. Joanna, Erik, and the secondary characters not only confuse your focus of the main plot, but also kind of freak you out just a little bit. I love when I can't tell you who I actually am rooting for until the end, because then the plot doesn't follow a predicable storyline. Strangers is anything, but predictable.
About 1/3 of the way into the story, I felt the pacing calmed down considerably from the introduction and it slightly frustrated me. I felt that maybe the balance between the two POVs prevented the evolution of the plot and kept it at a standstill. Once the POVs stopped repeating the previous chapter's main takeaway points, the plot picked up yet again. Around 60% of the story, we are introduced to a major dark focal-point of the story that you really can't guess if you tried—and I cannot tell you anymore than that! If you want to pick up a thriller that provides you an original concept, non-stop panic, and unreliable narrarators, then I suggest picking up Strangers .

Joanna is fresh out of her shower and taking solace in the fact that she's going to curl up on the couch with a good book and a glass or two of wine for a relaxing evening. Sounds perfect! Except from her bathroom window she notices her sensor light outside has gone on and someone has entered her house. She panics. She has to figure out what to do. She decides to investigate. Maybe this was all her imagination but it's not because there is a stranger in her home. A man she's never seen before. She screams and asks him to leave only to find out it's her fiance. How could this be? She lives alone and there is no sign that a man even lives in her house. He is just as confused as she is. Where are all his belongings?
The blurb for this sounded so interesting and it is for about 1/2 of the book but then it all gets so repetitive. It seems like you keep reading the same chapter over and over again which led me to do some skimming. For a book as fast paced as this I was surprised by how bored and distracted I was becoming as I read it. The end of the book was just meh for me.
Sadly, this is now my third 2 star book of 2018! Bummer! :(

Απλά ΕΞΑΙΡΕΤΙΚΟ! Ένα θρίλερ που κρατάει τον αναγνώστη από την αρχή μέχρι το τέλος!
Δύο άνθρωποι: ο Έρικ και η Τζοάνα. Εκείνος την αποκαλεί "αγάπη του",ισχυρίζεται πως είναι τρελά ερωτευμένοι και συγκατοικούν. Εκείνη δεν τον αναγνωρίζει και ισχυρίζεται πως δεν τον θυμάται και δεν έχουν συναντηθεί ποτέ. Στο σπίτι δεν υπάρχουν ίχνη πως ο Έρικ ζούσε κάποτε εκεί. Όμως ο ίδιος δείχνει να γνωρίζει που βρίσκεται το καθετί και έχει επίσης πάμπολλες αναμνήσεις από την κοινή τους ζωή,για να υποστηρίξει την αλήθεια του. Τι έχει συμβεί τελικά; Ποιος έχει δίκιο; Και τι έχει συμβεί μεταξύ τους;
Η αλήθεια είναι πως,από την πρώτη στιγμή,πήρα αυθόρμητα το μέρος του Έρικ. Τα λόγια και οι πράξεις του με έπεισαν. Στο πρώτο μισό μέρος γενικά έτσι εξελίσσεται η υπόθεση,με τους δύο ήρωες να αναλύουν το προσωπικό τους σκεπτικό και να παρουσιάζουν την δική τους οπτική και συναισθήματα. Όσο κυλούν οι σελίδες,τόσο πιο οικείοι γίνονται στον αναγνώστη. Από τη μέση και μετά τα πράγματα αλλάζουν και το παιχνίδι 'χοντραίνει': φαίνεται πως κάποιος θέλει να τους βγάλει από τη μέση. Ύποπτα γεγονότα ενισχύουν αυτήν την άποψη και η κάθε στιγμή τους περιέχει κίνδυνο. Οι δυο τους θα πρέπει αναγκαστικά να εμπιστευτούν ο ένας τον άλλον και να συνεργαστούν για να επιβιώσουν.
Μου άρεσε πάρα πολύ η φυσική μετάβαση από τον έναν χαρακτήρα στον άλλον,η ισάξια παρουσίασή τους και η ισορροπία μεταξύ των κεφαλαίων. Κανένας δεν 'καβαλάει' τον άλλον,οι ιστορίες και των δύο είναι εξίσου καλογραμμένες και ενδιαφέρουσες. Δεν βρήκα καθόλου υπερβολικό το στόρυ,και μου άρεσε που επικράτησε τελικά στο τέλος η ατμόσφαιρα του θρίλερ έναντι του συναισθήματος. Βέβαια υπήρχε συναίσθημα,και μάλιστα έντονο,απλά αναφέρομαι στην απουσία (ΕΥΤΥΧΩΣ!) της αγαπουλίστικης ατμόσφαιρας. Δεν θα το άντεχα,νομίζω. :Ρ Απεναντίας,τα ολοένα και πιο βαθιά συναισθήματα των ηρώων τους έκαναν πιο αποφασιστικούς να ξεκαθαρίσουν αυτήν την περίεργη κατάσταση και αποτέλεσαν το καλύτερο support στο κομμάτι της δράσης.
Εξαιρετικό το βιβλίο,εξαιρετικό και το συγγραφικό δίδυμο. Δεν είναι πάντα εύκολο να προκύψει ένα τόσο καλό αποτέλεσμα όταν προέρχεται από δύο διαφορετικά άτομα,εδώ όμως γίνεται η διαφορά. Και τι διαφορά! Το συστήνω ανεπιφύλακτα όχι μόνο σε όσους αγαπάνε το είδος,αλλά και σε όσους θέλουν να διαβάσουν μια ΠΡΑΓΜΑΤΙΚΑ καλή ιστορία!

Volle 5 Sterne,da ich wirklich nicht den kleinsten Kritikpunkt finden kann!Das Buch war so spannend,dass ich beim Lesen schweißnasse Hände hatte,jede Einzelheit war so beschrieben,als würde ich gerade einen super spannenden Thriller im Kino schauen.

Την πρώτη φορά που διαβάσατε την περίληψη του βιβλίου "Ξένοι" των Ursula Poznanski & Arno Strobel, είμαι σχεδόν βέβαιη πως στο μυαλό σας ήρθε ένα άλλο μυθιστόρημα, που είχε πρωτοκυκλοφορήσει στη χώρα μας λίγα χρόνια νωρίτερα, ενώ πέρσι το είδαμε και στις κινηματογραφικές αίθουσες. Ο λόγος για το "Αμνησία" του S.J. Watson το οποίο είναι όχι μόνο ένα πολύ καλό βιβλίο στο σύνολό του, αλλά κι ένα από τα καλύτερα του συγγραφέα. Για να επανέλθω, όμως, σ' αυτό που έλεγα αρχικά, πράγματι, μπορεί κανείς να εντοπίσει αρκετές ομοιότητες στον κεντρικό άξονα των δύο ιστοριών, πράγμα που δεν αποτελεί σπάνιο φαινόμενο αφού στην Τέχνη δεν υπάρχει παρθενογένεση. Ποιο είναι το σημαντικό, λοιπόν, όταν διακρίνει κανείς ομοιότητες ανάμεσα σε δύο πράγματα; Να διακρίνει τις διαφορές ανάμεσα στα δύο, οι οποίες και πρέπει να είναι πιο έντονες και στην προκειμένη, σε μία σύγκριση ανάμεσα στα δύο βιβλία, οι "Ξένοι" κερδίζουν στα σημεία.
Το σημαντικότερο στοιχείο που πρέπει να διαθέτει ένα θρίλερ προκειμένου να καθηλώσει τον αναγνώστη του, είναι να τον βάλει κατευθείαν στο θέμα, χωρίς περιττές φλυαρίες ή ανάλυση καταστάσεων. Αυτό θα γίνει όταν έρθει η κατάλληλη ώρα! Σε πρώτη φάση, αυτό που πρέπει να επιτύχει ο συγγραφέας, είναι να σε παρασύρει από τις πρώτες κιόλας στιγμές, σε μια τρομακτική δίνη συναισθημάτων αγωνίας, τρόμου, υποσυνείδητης τροφοδότησης του ένστικτου αυτοσυντήρησης κι επιβίωσης που όλοι έχουμε βαθιά μέσα μας, έστω κι αν στα στενά όρια της καθημερινότητάς μας το θάβουμε. Όταν, όμως, θα δοθεί εκείνο το έναυσμα που θα το ενεργοποιήσει, πρέπει να μπορούμε ν' ανταποκριθούμε και να λάβουμε δράση. Ακριβώς αυτό συμβαίνει με το "Ξένοι". Από τα πρώτα κιόλας λεπτά, οι συγγραφείς έχουν δημιουργήσει το κατάλληλο κλίμα, καλλιεργώντας τις ιδανικές συνθήκες που θα κορυφώνουν την αγωνία μας σε κάθε πράξη του δράματος.
Όσον αφορά το θέμα αφήγησης, αυτή μοιράζεται ανάμεσα στους δύο πρωταγωνιστές μας, τη Τζοάνα και τον Erik, με την Ursula Poznanski να έχει γράψει τα αφηγηματικά κεφάλαια της πρώτης, ενώ αντίστοιχα, ο Arno Strobel, του δεύτερου. Ως μοιρασιά θα λέγαμε πως είναι κάπως προβλέψιμη, καθώς ο κάθε συγγραφέας έχει αναλάβει ν' αναλύσει έναν χαρακτήρα με το φύλο του οποίου μπορεί να ταυτιστεί, πράγμα που δεν αποτελεί μεγάλη πρόκληση, αλλά αν το δούμε από μια διαφορετική σκοπιά, η πραγματική πρόκληση στην προκειμένη περίπτωση, είναι να διατηρηθεί η ομαλότητα της παρουσίασης, της ανάπτυξης και της εξέλιξης αμφότερων των χαρακτήρων, όχι μέσα από την πένα τους, αλλά και από την πένα κάποιου άλλου, έτσι όπως αυτός μετουσιώνεται μέσα από τα μάτια ενός άλλου ήρωα. Επί της ουσίας, έχουμε να κάνουμε με μια ιστορία η οποία δεν βασίζεται απόλυτα στην πλοκή, αλλά ρίχνει μεγαλύτερο βάρος στους ήρωές τους και στον κλυδωνισμένο ψυχισμό τους που καλείται ν' αντέξει το βάρος μιας διεστραμμένης κατάστασης στην οποία δεν ξέρεις ποιος είναι ο κακός.
Παράλληλα, υπάρχει ο κίνδυνος της σύγκρουσης -και κατ' επέκτασιν, λανθάνουσας σύγκρισης από το αναγνωστικό κοινό- του λογοτεχνικού επιπέδου ανάμεσα σε δύο συγγραφείς, τόσο στο ύφος όσο και στην ικανότητα χειρισμού της γλώσσας, όταν δύο ομότεχνοι καλούνται να συνεργαστούν για να παράγουν κοινό έργο. Ευτυχώς, οι "Ξένοι" είναι μία από τις περιπτώσεις εκείνες όπου τίποτα από τα παραπάνω δεν συμβαίνει. Το ύφος, ο χαρακτήρας και η λογοτεχνική ταυτότητα των δύο συγγραφέων έχει πάρα πολλά στοιχεία, γεγονός που τους επιτρέπει να δημιουργήσουν ο καθένας μόνος του το κομμάτι που του αναλογεί -συγγραφικά-, παντρεύοντάς το στην πορεία άκρως αρμονικά με το κομμάτι εκείνο που ουσιαστικά αποτελεί το alter ego του. Επιπλέον, το επίπεδό τους είναι πάρα πολύ υψηλό γεγονός που δεν τους προκαλεί ανασφάλεια σε προσωπικό επίπεδο, κάτι που φαίνεται από το ότι ο ένας δεν προσπαθεί να καπακώσει τον άλλον, ούτε μέσω της αφήγησής του αλλά ούτε και μέσα από τον ήρωά του για τον οποίο θα ήταν άκρως φυσικό να έχει πιο δυνατά αισθήματα, προσπαθώντας να τον εξιδανικεύσει στα μάτια μας.
Εν κατακλείδι, οι "Ξένοι" είναι ένα εξαιρετικό θρίλερ χαρακτήρων που όπως κάθε ιστορία αγωνίας που σέβεται τον εαυτό της, μπαίνει στο θέμα από το πρώτο κιόλας λεπτό. Δεν χρονοτριβεί, χτίζει ατμόσφαιρα από την αρχή και την τροφοδοτεί με ρίγη τρόμου και μυστηρίου καθ' όλη την διάρκεια των εξελίξεων της ιστορίας. Έχει δύο πρωταγωνιστές που δένουν μ' έναν μαγικό τρόπο και που παρουσιάζουν και ξετυλίγουν ένα ψυχογράφημα με τρόπο αριστοτεχνικό και δεξιοτεχνικό, πράγμα που θέλει μαεστρία για να το πετύχεις και κυρίως, συνείδηση του τι ιστορία δίνεις στο κοινό σου που στην προκειμένη, περισσότερο απ' οτιδήποτε άλλο, είναι μια ιστορία ανθρωποκεντρική, μια ιστορία χαρακτήρων. Το μοναδικό ψεγάδι, για μένα, είναι το ότι θα ήθελα το τελευταίο σκέλος του βιβλίο λίγο μεγαλύτερο, μια ελαφρώς πιο εκτενή ανάλυση ορισμένων δεδομένων, καθώς ένιωσα ότι η δράση περιορίστηκε λίγο βίαια. Παρ' όλα ταύτα, πρόκειται για ένα βιβλίο που με έντονο, γρήγορο ρυθμό, που σε καθηλώνει και που, γιατί όχι, σε κάνει να προβληματιστείς γύρω από σύγχρονες πραγματιστικές αλήθειες των ανθρωπίνων σχέσεων.

Chi è il vero estraneo?
Inizio con il dire una cosa che per me è fondamentale, quando leggo un libro di questo genere: la scrittura deve catturarmi immediatamente. E così è stato per questo romanzo! Sin dalle prime righe sono stata risucchiata dallo stile narrativo dei due autori, ritrovandomi a divorare le pagine senza neppure accorgermene. Non ho molto da dirvi, in realtà, né posso, altrimenti rischierei di spoilerarvi tutto e questo non va decisamente bene :P
Tutto ciò che posso dire è che non è come sembra.
Pensavo di andare incontro a una determinata trama, invece la situazione si è evoluta in modo del tutto inatteso. Confesso che, quando ho capito che il libro non stava prendendo la piega che avevo immaginato, ci sono rimasta male, ma poi sono stata rapita dai continui colpi di scena :D Avete seguito i miei stati su GR? LOL, quelle gif vi daranno l'idea di quanto mi abbia fottuto il cervello questo romanzo xD

'Τα όμορφα βιβλία όμορφα καταστρέφονται...'
Νομίζω ότι οι παραπάνω λέξεις συμπυκνώνουν όλη την αλήθεια για το βιβλίο "Ξένοι". Ένα βιβλίο που ξεκινάει με φρενήρη ρυθμό, με πολύ mind game και με πολλές προοπτικές να κάνει τη διαφορά και τελικά καταλήγει σε ένα μεγάλο φιάσκο!
Κι εκεί που έλεγα ότι επιτέλους θα βάλω 5 αστεράκια μετά από καιρό, καθώς με είχε καθηλώσει με την ιντριγκαδόρικη ιστορία του, τους ενδιαφέροντες χαρακτήρες του, την κινηματογραφική γραφή του και τις συνεχείς εναλλαγές στην πρωτοπροσωπη αφήγηση μεταξύ των δύο πρωταγωνιστών, ξαφνικά έρχεται η ανώμαλη προσγείωση όταν αποκαλύπτεται το παιχνίδι που παίζεται και έχει οδηγήσει τους ήρωες στην τρέλα που ζουν.
Και το κερασάκι στην τούρτα; Η εξήγηση του λόγου της αμνησίας της γυναίκας! Τόσο γελοία που πραγματικά ήταν εξαιρετικά ευφάνταστη, όσο αντιφατικό κι αν διαβάζεται αυτό...
Σε αυτά τα βιβλία προκειμένου να ξεχωρίσουν από το σωρό, πέρα από την ενδιαφέρουσα εξέλιξη της ιστορίας και την ικανότητα του συγγραφέα, θα πρέπει να υπάρχει άρτια αιτιολογημένη και αληθοφανής εξήγηση των γεγονότων που προκάλεσαν την ιστορία που παρακολουθούμε, αλλά και σοβαρά κίνητρα για τον 'κακό' που έχει εμπνευστεί το παρανοϊκό σκηνικό που διαβάζουμε, αλλιώς το βιβλίο χάνει αυτόματα τον σεβασμό του αναγνώστη. Δυστυχώς, το συγγραφικό δίδυμο μάλλον έμπλεξε πολύ την ιστορία του που για να την ξεμπλέξει αναγκάστηκε να καταφύγει σε φτηνές και τυποποιημένες λύσεις που χαντάκωσαν άμεσα τον αρχικό ενθουσιασμό μου. Ειδικά όταν διαβάζω στις τελευταίες σελίδες - και ενώ το κυνηγητό είναι στην κορύφωσή του - το πρωταγωνιστικό δίδυμο να επιδίδεται σε πράξεις σεξουαλικού περιεχομένου, το θεωρώ τόσο τετριμμένο που πραγματικά χαλιέμαι!
Για τις ωραίες ώρες που πέρασα στα 2/3 του βιβλίου, 3 αστεράκια (7/10).

Το να δημιουργήσει ο συγγραφέας ένα μυστήριο, ειναι μάλλον εύκολο. Το να καταφέρει να το εξηγήσει ικανοποιητικά ειναι το ζητούμενο. Το θρίλερ αυτό έχει φυσικά κάποιες αδυναμίες, αλλα καταφέρνει το σημαντικό. Αφού σε αρπάξει από την αρχή με τα "ανεξήγητα" συμβάντα κρατάει αμείωτο το ενδιαφέρον, και δίνει τελικά μια ευφάνταστη , λογική και έξυπνη λύση!

Wirklich gut, bis man dann die "Auflösung" kennt. Dieses Ende hat es mir wirklich verdorben, las sich auf die letzten 50 Seiten leider nur noch wie eine Art Verschwörungstheorie. Schade, die Geschichte an sich, hätte man einen anderen Hintergrund und eine andere "realistischere" Auflösung gewählt, versprach 5*. Dennoch Schreibstil und Grundidee bleiben super!

Mich hat das Buch ehrlich gesagt etwas enttäuscht. Ich hatte mir weitaus mehr bei diesem Buch erwartet. Die ersten 50 Seiten waren noch recht spannend und es war noch nicht ganz klar in welche Richtung sich dieses Buch entwickelt. Als dann langsam mehr und mehr Klarheit in die Geschichte kam fand ich es recht langweilig und es wurde kein richtiger Spannungsbogen geschaffen. Es gab hin und wieder spannende Momente und Ereignisse, allerdings konnte diese Spannung nicht wirklich gehalten werden. Ich fand die Richtung in die sich das Buch dann noch entwickelt hat auch nicht richtig gut, weil sie mir einfach etwas zu 08/15 war. Ich hatte da irgendwie bei einem Zusammenschluss dieser beiden Autoren etwas spektakuläres und innovativeres erhofft/erwartete. Das Ende war noch einmal kurz spannend, konnte aber auch nichts mehr wirklich rumreißen. Echt schade, aber ich fand das Buch unterdurchschnittlich und würde es nicht wirklich weiterempfehlen, denn ich denke da gibt es bessere Thriller, vor allem Psychothriller. Der Thrill hat hier meiner Meinung nach eher gefehlt.

Strangers starts off really well, and then gets all "romantic" and far-fetched. I should have known this plot description was too good to be true.
I was so interested in seeing what was going to happen, but it went completely off the rails. I read Ursula Archer's Five, and really enjoyed it, so I was excited for this one. The ending didn't even really make sense, and I think they took on too much trying to write this book. Anyway, I really liked the first half, and then I'm still angry about the second half. That's all I have to say because I would just go on complaining for 12 more paragraphs.

Joanna is home alone when a man shows up in her house. She panics since she doesn't know him. He tells her he is her fiancé, Erik, and lives there with her, except there are no signs that he lives there. No clothes. No toiletries. Nothing. As they try to figure out what is going on, they discover they are both in great danger.
The story is told from both Joanna and Erik's points of view. I liked the alternating chapters of different viewpoints. It helped fill in blanks as to what was happening.
A fast-paced domestic thriller. I was intrigued as to what the reality was, what was their history, and what happened to cause the situation.

Das war leider nichts (für mich). Gerade zu Anfang hat es mich noch so sehr gepackt, obwohl ich schon viele Geschichten mit "Partner erkennt Partner nicht wieder", gelesen habe.
Doch irgendwann habe ich mich dann doch gefragt, wohin die Geschichte eigentlich führen möchte. Hätte das Ende noch was rausgehauen, wäre es noch ein gutes Buch geworden. So wie es dann jedoch geendet hat, war ich dann doch sehr überrascht (leider negativ).
Vom Schreibstil und der eigentlichen Neugierde, was hinter der Geschichte steckt, konnte das Buch mich zumindest teilweise überzeugen,... und Poznanski bleibt nach wie vor eine meiner Lieblingsautorinnen.
Doch irgendwann habe ich mich dann doch gefragt, wohin die Geschichte eigentlich führen möchte. Hätte das Ende noch was rausgehauen, wäre es noch ein gutes Buch geworden. So wie es dann jedoch geendet hat, war ich dann doch sehr überrascht (leider negativ).
Vom Schreibstil und der eigentlichen Neugierde, was hinter der Geschichte steckt, konnte das Buch mich zumindest teilweise überzeugen,... und Poznanski bleibt nach wie vor eine meiner Lieblingsautorinnen.

Zunächst wischst du die Gedanken mit Leichtigkeit weg, es gibt keinen Grund Angst zu haben. Deine Sinne spielen dir nur etwas vor. Bis du tatsächlich einen Fremden in deiner Küche entdeckst... Angsterstarrt willst du nur flüchten, doch der Fremde kennt deinen Namen. Er behauptet mit dir zusammenzuleben, sogar mit dir verlobt zu sein. Doch du kennst ihn nicht... Ein Verwirrspiel zwischen Realität und Wahnsinn beginnt...
Mein Eindruck

Ich weiß nicht genau, wie Frau Poznanski das macht, aber mit ihren Büchern hat sie mich jedes Mal am Haken. Mit "Fremd" ganz besonders. Schon die Leseprobe hatte mich sofort eingenommen und mich kurze Zeit später zum Kauf verleitet. Den Reiz des Buches machen eindeutig die beiden Perspektiven der Hauptfiguren aus. Sicherlich hat auch noch beigetragen, dass Frau Poznanski und Herr Strobel gemeinsam die Geschichte erarbeitet haben.
Zunächst beginnt das Buch in Joannas Perspektive, die auf den "Fremden" in ihrer Küche stößt. Es ist absolut verstörend, er weiß ihren Namen, kennt sich im Haus aus, doch alle seine Sachen sind spurlos verschwunden. Wenn er hier wohnen würde, müssten doch persönliche Gegenstände von ihm da sein? Auf der anderen Seite erleben wir Erik, der mit der Situation nicht weniger überfordert ist. Die Frau, die er liebt, erkennt ihn auf einmal nicht wieder, greift ihn sogar an. Es schmerzt zu sehen, wie sehr sie sich vor ihm fürchtet und jeden ihrer Schritte sorgfältig abwägt.
Der große Spannungstreiber von "Fremd" ist die Frage nach dem "Warum?". Ist Joanna geistig gesund? Hat sie ihn aufgrund eines traumatischen Ereignisses "vergessen"? Spielt ihr Erik nur etwas vor, ist das Ganze groß inszeniert? Man weiß es nicht und es macht so viel Spaß herauszufinden, wie die Autoren den Knoten platzen lassen. Gleichzeitig geraten Joanna und Erik zunehmend in Gefahr und es lässt sich erahnen, dass so viel mehr dahinterstecken muss.
Am besten hat mir gefallen, wie plausibel die Gedankengänge der Figuren sind. Es ist nun mal absolut nachvollziehbar, wie Joanna auf Abwehr und Flucht schaltet und sich schwer tut Vertrauen zu fassen. Umgekehrt kann man verstehen, wie sie Erik durch ihr Verhalten zur Verzweiflung bringt. Durch die weiteren Geschehnisse von "außerhalb" entwickelt das Buch einen Sog, der einen gar nicht mehr loslässt. Für mich war es wirklich eines der spannendsten Bücher dieses Jahres.
Einzig der Schluss lief mir dann etwas zu plötzlich ab, und obwohl es an und für sich plausibel war, kam es mir doch etwas gestellt vor. Andererseits ist es fast schon erschreckend, wie nah die Autoren dem momentanen Zeitgeschehen kommen.
Fazit

"Fremd" bekommt von mir eine eindeutige Leseempfehlung und gehört für mich zu den Highlights des Jahres. Es bietet eine unheimlich spannende Grundkonstellation und spielt mit der Psyche seiner Figuren. Doch genauso führt es den Leser ständig hinters Licht, bis man selbst nicht mehr weiß, was man eigentlich glauben soll. Ab und an wirkt es leider minimal konstruiert, aber bei dem ganzen Verwirrspiel wüsste ich auch nicht, wie man es noch überzeugender hätte machen können. Alles in allem ein absolut spannender und fesselnder Lesegenuss!
