Meet the faithful women God sent to serve alongside His patriarchs. We may recognize their names, but there is so much more to discover about Sarah, Rebekah, Hannah, Ruth, and the seventy other Old Testament women profiled in this book. Filled with stunning photography that brings their stories to life, this book is an ideal companion to your study of the Old Testament.
Heather Farrell’s love for the scriptures began young, when at the age of 11 she hid under a flashlight under her pillow so she could read the Old Testament late at night. Her love for the women in scriptures began when, her oldest son was born around Christmas time and she felt a kinship with Mary, the mother of Jesus. As she began to research Mary she realized that there were hundreds of women in the scriptures, but very little had been written about them. Excited by all the women she discovered, she began sharing what she learned on her popular blog, Women in the Scriptures (womeninthescriptures.com). Primarily self taught in the scriptures, Heather is a testament to the truth that becoming a scholar of the gospel is not beyond anyone’s reach, it just takes an inquisitive mind and the companionship of the Holy Ghost. Heather grew up in Idaho but currently lives in Iowa with her husband, four children, two sheep, a goat and a flock of chickens.
I wish I liked this more. It was fun to see all the ways she stylized the OT characters, and I did appreciate some of her insight. She was very knowledgeable about biblical history, but she’s also very opinionated and feminist and sometimes she’d write something totally off the wall, that I couldn’t help but wonder how she had this published. 😬😬😬
10/10, 100% phenomenal. So many women in the Old Testament that I never took much time to think about until reading this. I will definitely be reading the others!
This is the second book that I have read in this series. The first one was the women in the New Testament book. I must admit that when I read the first book I didn't realize that this was basically just Heather's blog in book form. Maybe the writing style was a little different in the first but this one did feel very blog like. Not that that is a bad thing but it is what it is.
I am very impressed with Heather's insight into many of these women. She is VERY well researched and is very good at presenting that research in a clear and easy to understand way.
This book can be kind of intense reading it from cover to cover. I think it is intended to be taken in spurts but that's just not how I do things. There were quite a few typos but nothing that took away from understanding the overall message.
The main take away from this book is learn from the past. Learn from the good examples and the bad and be the best you that you can be!
I checked this book out from a local library for my wife. I only took a quick glance while I was there.
It is a very nice-looking book with gorgeous art work in and out, but physically, I wouldn't call it a reference book per se. It's cumbersome in size (10 X 8 3/8 X 1) with glossy pages, more like a coffee table book. I admire the author's testimony regarding educating herself w/o going to college and her tenacity for all the research she did.
When I asked my wife how she liked it, she told me something in the book about "Lot was not sitting in the Gate of Sodom (Genesis 19:1)".
I went to the page where the quote was, and discovered to my chagrin the author is a Mormon quoting from the Joseph Smith Translation. I looked further and discovered that she often quotes from it.
My bad for not looking at the first few pages that would have told me she is a Mormon. The book is going back pronto.
I really enjoyed getting to know these women in the Old Testament. Some of them I was familiar with and some I wasn't. I enjoyed reading Heather's insights into each of these women. Her research is very well done. Obviously, with over 300 women in the Old Testament, this book is just a selection, but it is a good selection. I was actually surprised by some of the women she included, but I found her take on them helpful and I think I probably would not have spent time on them otherwise. I would definitely recommend this to anyone studying the Old Testament or just wanting to get to know the stories of some of the Old Testament women better.
3.5. Who knew there were over 300 it women in the Old Testament. I loved learning a little more about these women, their stories and the history surrounding their lives. The author has obviously spent some time studying the scriptures and outside sources. I guess it felt somewhat like a rough draft that needed a little more polishing, but overall, I will be coming back to their stories and I definitely want to become more fluent with the Bible.
FANTASTIC book!!! I have used this book to enrich preparation and teaching for my Sunday School class this year. Five Super Bright Shiny Stars!!! WWWOT touched my heart and opened my eyes with thoughtful insight and increased loved for these women. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you Heather Farrell!
The author admiringly balances scholarship and personal insights. I loved the feminine (and might I say feminist) perspective of the sometimes-sticky Old Testament. Refreshingly honest and yet fully faithful. Would highly recommend.
