In Spite of Lions is a story of a young woman who boards a ship to escape her abusive Mother. In the beginning, we're not given a lot of information except that Anna (as she directs everyone to call her) gives little spurts of information of what she is running away from-and she is literally running away from London's polite society. On the ship, she meets Mary Livingston (David's Livingston's wife) and their two young children, Robert and Agnes, who are a delight to Anna.
There is no understanding as to why Anna doesn't like Captain Dunna(of the ship they sail on to Africa), and why she has the knowledge that his name is actually Mr. Ashmore.
If you're at all familiar with David Livingston then you will know that Anna, Mary, Robert, and Agnes's destination point is in Africa. It is far removed from London's polite society. Despite the huge change in her living conditions, I found that Anna really tried hard to please (and adapt) Mary, and I was mystified by Mary's cold demeanor towards Anna.
David Livingston's only convert is Sechele who is portrayed as a man with a huge heart, and a penchant for dressing lavishly. He is the chief of the Bakwena tribe, and all of his people seem to really love and revere him.
A lot of the locals are wary of Anna and accuse her of being a baloi (witch), but this doesn't deter her in gaining their friendship, even though she is wary of all of the back-breaking work she does on behalf of Mary. But it didn't stop her from trying.
In Spite of Lions is an apt title because that is exactly what Anna battles. Literally, it is found that she has run away only to defend the local village from a Lion(and protect the children), and this is where the author reveals more of Anna's past. The Captain has shown up in the same village to take care of Anna after the Lion attacks her and stays to make sure she heals and that her wounds don't get infected. We find out why Anna says his name is actually Mr. Ashmore. It turns out that her name is really Catherine, and tells the Captain why she chose the name, Anna.
I found the ending a little confusing, but I did really enjoy this novel in spite of it.
