He’s a down-home rancher… Axel Hansen is Prairie’s fickle Casanova and resident prankster. Ten years ago, he wanted nothing more than to settle down on the family ranch with his college sweetheart. But his adrenaline junkie girlfriend, Haley, chose her profession over love.

Will Lightning Strike Twice for Love? Axel jumps at the chance to help Haley with her research, and before they know it, they’re caught in the crosswinds of love and obligation. But as devastating tornadoes rip through the area, they’ll have to confront their feelings for each other and decide if their love can weather any storm.
This is your typical romance. Two people in love but one decides there is no solution that leads to them being together so she ends it without consulting the other. What ever happened to talking and sorting things out together? That is what grownups do in real life all the time. I found it hard to like Haley because of her selfishness. Especially after her reveal. That is when you take the time to talk things out and come to a compromise. Instead she was selfish and caused unnecessary unhappiness for everyone. Probably why I don't read a whole lot of romance. It irritates me when the characters act like this. Oh well, moving on...
Haley and Axel were college sweethearts who were inseparable. They grew up in the same small town, but had very different upbringings. Axel's family owned a prosperous ranch, while Haley lived with her foster mother Mama June. Upon graduating from college, Axel hoped that Haley would make a life with him on the ranch. She had other ideas. Haley felt that she was never worthy of anyone's love, so she left town without saying goodbye. She believed that Axel deserved a woman who could love him unconditionally and be his soulmate. Axel has spent the last 10 years working on the ranch with his father and his brother Gunnar. He feels that his father has never taken any of his ideas about improving the ranch seriously and he is running out of patience. Haley worked as the chief meteorologist for a TV station before beginning to research climate control so she could educate people about tornado safety. This job brought her back home to Prairie and Axel. Her boss offered her the possibility of a promotion if she took this assignment. She agreed to go but she was afraid to face Axel and the feelings she still had for him. The minute Axel saw Haley at the ranch, he realized that he desperately wanted her in his life again. The powerful attraction had never really gone away. Will Haley put her job before Axel again, or will she finally realize that she deserves to be loved? Can Axel convince Haley that the love between them is forever and that he can't live without her? Tessa brings us another romantic and passionate story in her Cowboys of Flint Hills series. I look forward to the next installment in the series, "Prairie Fire."
I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Tessa has done it again! She delivered a true winner. Once college sweethearts, Flint Hill cowboy Axel Hansen and Haley Cooper are tossed together after 10 years. Coop abruptly left him, breaking Axel's heart. A country boy destined to return home and a PHD studying storms. Homebody and thrill seeker. The uncertainty of the characters feelings is palatable as they deal with their own insecurities and beliefs. Now older Axe decides he's going to chase Haley... you will laugh and cry keeping up with them. They struggle after a tornado blasts through town inflicting devastation, can they weather more storms together as one. I truly like this series. I am happy to visit with old and new friends. Can't wait for a new book. GUNNER?
This is my first Cowboys of the Flint Hills book, and it won't be my last. I will definitely be going back to read books 1-3.
The story is a rollercoaster ride full of emotions. When Axe and Haley meet up again, there is no way you could envision a second chance. You are pulled in from the first pages and hang on to the very last.
The description of Haley's work and the tornado activity was interesting. The information about Axe, Gunn, and Hope's father Eddie answered many questions. It was not really a secret because no one tried to hide it. They just didn't speak about it.
Then there was Haley's past that she and Axe never spoke about when they were in college. Their previous relationship seemed to be pretty much based on sex. I didn't really understand how they could be in love when they didn't know much about each other's hopes, dreams, or in Haley's case, her childhood.
There were all of those steamy scenes between Axe and Haley. Admittedly some of them I skimmed through. I felt their connection, but not their chemistry.
A entertaining second chance, small town romance full of family, love and loyalty.
I voluntarily read and reviewed this book received via Hidden Gems.
What an emotional book. The author sucked me in right at the beginning and didn’t let up until the end.
Axel and Haley “Coop” were college sweethearts who both made decisions that they both regret and have carried that regret for 10 years. They find themselves working together again 10 years later and are forced to have to deal with past issues. Love is still there for both but buried deep. She is a thrill seeker and he is a homebody and on paper these two shouldn’t work. However, when they are together their chemistry is explosive.
A storm rips through Prairie and it tugged at my heartstrings. I have loved these characters and as I was reading this, my heart broke for them. I kept telling myself that this is a fictitious town but I still felt heartbroken. However, from the ashes the town rallies and I couldn’t help cheering them on.
Axel Hansen has fought his whole life to prove to his father that he's more than the good time guy. He's worked hard to try to turn the livelihood of Hansen stables around. His father wants him to settle down with a family, but ten years ago one special girl ran out of his life and he had the love'em and leave'em mentality.
Haley left town ten years ago to start her career learning how to save others during the most severe weather. But she's back in Prairie when her boss sends her to collect data with new technology to help with early warning for severe weather. And she's still running.
This amazing read had me in tears. It will definitely be read again and again.
I really enjoyed this novel. The author had an engaging and direct writing style that I absolutely adored. I could definitely see myself reading more of her work.
Axel and Haley were college sweethearts, but Haley's fear of commitment led her to break his heart. Ten years later, a chance opportunity sticks these two together for two months. Will they be able to stick to business, or will the sparks flying between them be too much to resist?
I loved the heat, the flirting, and the romance between these two. I also really loved the character development that occurred for both of them individually and for them as a couple. We learn that maybe their relationship in the past was all based on sex and the unfortunate heartbreak they went through allowed them the chance to really get to know the person they "loved" and allow them to become a person they truly did love.
The reason I gave this book four stars instead of five is that it took me a little longer than I'd like it to for me to start liking Axel. When I read romance heroes, I want them to be those heroes right away, but I guess that's my own preference and not a reflection on the author. Nonetheless, there were many times in the book were Axel just wanted to play the "poor me," "I don't want to grow up" card, which I'm not a fan of for my heroes. On that note, the heroine was also pretty big into playing the victim. Both characters took a bit too long to own up to their own shortcomings, they just wanted to play the blame game and pull the victim card. Granted, when you learn about some of their history... okay, no spoilers.
The beginning also moved a bit too quickly from me from Point A to Point B. One second, Axel hates her and can't stand her, and the next he's 100% on board and falling for her again, just because of a touch at a bar... I don't know, that felt unrealistic and inauthentic to me, but I guess with the immature character he was in the beginning, it makes sense.
All in all, this was an engaging, well-written book, my first by Tessa Layne, but definitely not my last. I would 100% recommend this book!
* I was provided with an ARC of this book, however I elected to write this review and it contains my candidly honest opinions on the novel.
Prairie Storm is part of the Cowboys of Flint Hills series, and the first book connected with the Hansens. Haley and Axel used to be lovers in college, but she left Axel behind when their futures started to look too different. Now, ten years later, they’re forced together again. Haley is researching storms and tornadoes, while Axel is still working on the family farm. With attracting flying and emotions storming, will Haley and Axel make the most of their second chance at love, or has nothing changed since the last time Haley left Axel behind?
Oh my, what an emotional book! I highly suggest some tissues! Haley and Axel are an amazing couple, full of love, past hurts, a little angst, and a new appreciation of each other and what home and family means. Haley was so independent, really proud of her career, and due to her past, had no idea what family and loyalty could truly mean. Axel had family and pride in spades, but always looked at things from the wrong angle. He had some amazing ideas, but always let his father dictate his actions. When they dated in college, their relationship was focused in the now with not a whole lot of depth. I loved seeing how their relationship had developed into so much more, adding so much meaning and layers into what they had and who they were! I loved that this first part of the book really set the scenes and emotions for Haley and Axel, and the second half just flew with many different life altering events and understanding. I definitely cried with the events in this book, my heart broke a little bit with how their relationship developed at times, but it was a beautiful book with an ending that made me smile and just feel so good inside! This series is absolutely fabulous, I love that you don’t have to read any of the previous ones to understand this couple, and I can’t wait to read the next book from Ms. Layne!
ARC for honest review with no compensation, is another well written, awesome book by Tessa Layne.
Prairie Storm is the 4th book in the Cowboys of Flint Hills and it’s about Axel Hansen and Haley “Coop” Cooper who dated and fell in love in college but “Coop” for reasons that show up later in the book left Axel in the dust. Now 10 years later she shows up back at the family ranch but is determined to do her job and leave…..
Axel lost the love of his life “Coop” at 22 and now she shows back up at his family ranch to work on tracking the weather and tornadoes in and around the town of Prairie. He thinks he is over his feelings for her but…seeing her again brings them all back with a vengeance! !
Haley “Coop” as Axel called all those years ago, thinks she has contained her feelings from back then and figured he has moved on with his life and has the family he always wanted so she feels safe about going to Prairie and gathering data for tracking tornadoes and helping to warn people and towns when a tornado pops up…but when she comes face to face with him….it’s not what she thought and…all bets are off….
Can these two figure out their feelings for each other, can they fix what tore them apart before or will they finally be left with the aftermath of what’s left after a tornado???
Full of angst, sexy banter, closed off feelings, secrets, tears (and mine too), close calls with tornadoes, family getting in the way and finding that love might be able to endure time and distance…can these two find their HEA???
Can’t wait for the next book in this series…. Prairie Obsession…who is it????
Can Axel and Haley's love stand the test of distance?
Axel and Haley's post-college romance ended when she ran off, knowing she'd never fit in with his ranch lifestyle. Ten years later, she's assigned to collect weather data on and around his ranch, and their chemistry is still all-consuming. But as much as they love each other and can't consider a life apart, there's no way he can leave the ranch, nor can she leave her career.
As the fourth story in the Flint Hills, we get another visit with the Hansen and Sinclaire families, which is reason enough to read this book and all the rest in this series. This fictional Kansas environment is beautifully developed, making the reader feel just as much a part of the family as the characters themselves.
This one focuses on Axe's struggle to bring the family ranch into the 21st century, despite his dad's "what's always worked will always work" mentality, and gives us a full-on meteorological course as we follow Haley along on her scientific pursuits. When a tornado heads straight toward the town and ranches, everyone's faith and loyalty is put to the ultimate test.
This book was completely enthralling, captivating me right from the first line and had me staying up way past my bedtime to finish it. The characters are authentic, the passion is scorching hot, and the humor lightens the heaviness of the emotional depth of the story. It's a wonderful book, and a terrific addition to the series. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
I think this may be my favorite of this series so far. Not only because of the emotional rollercoaster it puts us on, but also because of the characters involved.
Axel is a troublemaker, which we've seen in interactions with his sister Hope. Really all this is a cover-up, he's been hurt and doesn't want to be hurt again.
Haley never intended to return to the Flint Hills, unfortunately her boss has put her on a head on collision with her past. As a meteorologist at CPARC - Climate Prediction and Research Center she's been tasked with recording severe weather activity around Prairie, Kansas. Having to drive herself she has been assured locating one would not be an issue.
I'm not sure who was more surprised Haley or Axel when she shows up at Hanson Stables where she will be living for the next two months while collecting tornado data. Now Axel is determined not to fall under her spell again, that is until they meet up at the Trading Post after she's settled in at the Ranch.
Chasing the weather is quite the adrenaline high, and a Tornado touchdown later, Axel is reprimanding her about safety.
These two have enough emotions swirling around it's like their own personal tornado.
But it's the one that hits Prairie proper that causes a whole new level of everything, pretty much for everybody.
There is so much greatness in this book that I almost feel overwhelmed. When I reached The End, I felt the immediate need to write this review so I could share the wonder of this story. This is no ordinary contemporary romance book as it borders on the spectacular. Axel has a second chance with his long-ago lover, Haley. They can’t resist the power of love when they meet up after ten years. In this book, you will also feel the strength of the Prairie Storm, the intensity of family and friends and the true meaning of work ethic. When the decline of economy hit ranchers, they had to find a way to make a living and keep their homes and I’ve been fascinated with this series as these men find new ways to hold everything together. I read long into the night to finish this book which is filled with action, drama, fears and yes, I got out the Kleenex. With tears in my eyes, I saw Uncle Warren with baby Henry; the change in family dynamics as the generations evolve; and happily, met Melody. This is a great and powerful story.
Congratulations also to the author for mentioning certified storm shelters and the work of meteorologists as this is so important in many of our lives.
I received this advanced copy to read for an honesty, personal, voluntary review.
Haley works collecting data on dangerous storms and getting the information out to the public so they can seek shelter. She finally has the opportunity to go into the field with a colleague. Her boss is sending her to a farm in Prairie. A farm she is very familiar. Her colleague gets sick and she must go alone.
When she gets there she is greeted by Axel. Her old college boyfriend. He still lives on the family ranch with his parents and brother. He immediately knows what his been missing in his life. He volunteers to be Haley's driver.
As they spend time together their feelings for each other grows stronger. She knows she needs to focus on her task at collecting info and he needs to help run the family ranch. Together they help each other get to what they both want. But are both happy when they do?
There's a storm coming toward Prairie, will Haley have time to warn everyone. You need to read this incredible book to find out. When the storm hits have tissues handy. The whole scene is so moving. Always tell those around you how you feel today, because tomorrow is not guaranteed.
Oh my...this isn't just a love story between Axel and Haley. It is a love story about father to son, brother to brother and a community to their town. There is so much emotion in this book that you don't see coming and it takes your breath away.
Axel surprises me in that he seems one dimensional in the other books, the prankster, the devil may care attitude and all round good time guy but, he really is so much more. His struggles, his feelings and his pride of family really take on most of his personality to make up an amazing man.
Haley does not endear herself to me early on in the book. She seems selfish and insensative. It is not until you really get into her past that things make sense. I'm sure this just what Axel feels since he and Haley never talked too much about her childhood, her dreams and her desires when they were together ten years ago.
This is an amazing story that touches your heart on so many levels that it stays with you long after you finish reading. It feels like the good people of Prairie are part of your family and what happens to them affects you too.
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
So I've been reading this series since the very first book came out and I've enjoyed all of them but honestly, I think this was my favorite! First, kudos to Ms. Layne for writing a heroine who felt so realistic. Haley/Coop talked about her job as a meteorologist throughout the story and I don't know how accurate she was but Coop SOUNDED convincing, like she knew what she was talking about. I loved that! Axel and his brother Gunnar have been on my radar too since book one so I was super excited to read about the fun, laidback and seemingly carefree Axel. Coop and Axel's chemistry was charged from their very first reconnection and when they kissed for the "first" time, my heart went pitter-patter!! There's also a few surprises in the story, some sad and some happy. I cried and I smiled and I found myself just plowing through this book nonstop. This is a spicy AND sweet second chance story between two true to life, genuine characters! Told from dual POVs with a happy ever after. I received, read and voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
Axel is not happy because of his father. Every time he proposes a change to make things better in the ranch, his father says no. Axel feels like going away but his love for the land and the ranch is bigger than his deception. Haley has become a meteorologist and a good one. Her goal is to save lives being able to predict the deadly tornadoes they suffer every year. The book is well-written and tells us about the decisions we make and what makes us take those decisions. It tells us about how sometimes we bottle up all of the feelings, regrets and worries we have instead of leaving them free to go and feel the relief of the load on our backs. It is a great book where the author not only explore the feelings of the characters but also the behaviours of the people in a small town. When hard times come all of them stick together to help like a big family. A great series for all the readers who love contemporary romance and second chance love. I voluntarily reviewed an advance copy of this book.

I really enjoyed Haley Cooper and Axel Hansen story. The one thing I've comes to realize about Tessa's story's is that she makes each of her heroes human by way of flaws. I've enjoyed going thru her books so far and she hasn't disappointed yet. Meeting Axel and Haley has been a joy for both of them had wanted to be accepted in different ways. For Haley its with her peers at work and with Axel its his father. It has steam but that adds to the book. As Haley and Axel work thru things and there are many more issues you watch them grow in this story you can't help but turn the pages to see what happens next. Their biggest test comes towards the end in the form of a twister. Hmm how you say? Well you need to read it to find out. For like life we all have tests. Its an awesome book it will keep you guessing as to what way things will go next. I have enjoyed each book I've read so far for you learn something from each book. They are a page turner in themselves. J
This is book centers around Axel Hansen and Haley Cooper. Axel and Haley were college sweethearts. She was a foster child with an adventurous streak and ready to spread her wings away from the only home she knew and leaves without saying a word. Also feeling she wasn’t good enough for Axel. Axel’s family is on the other side of the spectrum, a wealthy ranch family . He had thought the two of them would have a future together. Now 10 years later, Axel is struggling to make his voice heard in the family ranch, and Haley is back as a meteorologist assigned do to research with the possibility of a promotion. The chemistry is still there but will they be able to have a second chance in the middle of not only their personal tornado but also in the middle of the one that tears their town? Another well written story by this author with an engaging plot and complex characters. I was entrusted a copy of this book by Hidden Gems. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
This was a great read! The writing flowed well, and there were SO many emotions for me with this one. I laughed out loud, and had to stop reading to cry for a few minutes. I strongly disliked Haley at the start. I don't think leaving someone in the dead of night without explanation is something that someone should just forgive. It was also one of those "I'll make the decision for someone else" deals. I hate those! Haley started to grow on me as the story went on. I loved Axel. He was a good man trying to help his family, and make his own way. Once things change between them, I did feel like Haley was unwilling to bend at all to be with Axel. They get their HEA, but it was hard fought. Now let me just say that I haven't had a book make me bawl my eyes out for quite a while. I usually avoid them :) I had no idea what was coming, and I had to stop reading a couple of times to get a hold of myself. EXCELLENT writing! I can't recommend this one enough!
This is the 4th book in the series and I feel like they just keep getting better. This was Axel and Haley’s story. It is another story of a long lost love, but this one had a few twists and the story was a little bit deeper.
Axel is one of the Hansen brothers. He loves the family ranch, but has struggled to be heard by his father. He lost the love of his life 10 years ago because he would not leave Prairie. Now she is back and he wants a second chance, but will she stay this time.
Haley had a rough childhood and does not know what true family is. She had her chance 10 years ago, but her need to pursue her career was greater. Now she has been put back into Axe’s life...can she just leave again?
This couple is great together. The sexy time is amazing and their story just makes it better. The secondary characters are good too. We get little glimpses of the previous characters which I love. Overall ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️!
The Cowboy and the Scientist – a touching second chance story!!!
Axel works on his family’s horse farm. He is expecting interns, but the scientists from CPARC (Climate Prediction and Research Center) are a surprise. An even bigger surprise is that one of those scientists is the “one that got away” ten years ago. Haley Cooper, now with PhD, is researching tornados and trying to save lives. She did not want to be in the same space as Axel again, especially to witness his possible wife and children.
These two lead very different lives, but the 10 years has not lessened the attraction they feel for each other. And neither even really tried to “replace” the one they lost. Sparks fly, and winds howl in this completely engaging story of family, career, changing with the times, second chances and compromise.
*** I am voluntarily leaving my honest review of this book ***
What an emotional book. The author sucked me in right at the beginning and didn’t let up until the end.
Axel and Haley “Coop” were college sweethearts who both made decisions that they both regret and have carried that regret for 10 years. They find themselves working together again 10 years later and are forced to have to deal with past issues. Love is still there for both but buried deep. I kept telling myself that this is a fictitious town but I still felt heartbroken. However, from the ashes the town rallies and I couldn’t help cheering them on.
This book is everything I adore in angsty emotional reads: two characters that want to be together, belong together, but just don’t know how to make it work. As college sweethearts, Axel and Haley were so desperately besotted with each other, in the way only young lovers can be. They just had wildly different goals for their futures – only Axel didn’t realize it. When Fate and Mother Nature bring the pair back together during storm season, it’s a chance encounter neither one was prepared for. It didn’t take long before I was fully invested in seeing how Axel and Haley were going to make a second chance work. In fact, I was so thoroughly engrossed in finding out how they’d do it that the deadly tornado that blows through the middle of this story (and Prairie) caught me totally unawares. And left me an ugly-crying mess in its wake. This might just be my favorite book in the series so far.
Axel Hansen has been in love with Haley Cooper (Coop) for ten long years. Ten years ago Axel was ready to settle down, get married and have a bunch of kids but his college sweetheart Haley had other ideas. She wanted to be a meteorologist who chased tornado and prevented the deaths that resulted from these dangerous storms. She the thrill seeking girl who broke is heart.” As a result of the loss of his true love Axel became a flighty Lothario and humorous rascal.
As a consequence of her new promotion Haley is forced to return to Prairie and to Axel. Now Haley finds herself in a position of telling Axel the truth of why she left him and the fact that she has always love him. The question now is: will these two star crossed lovers get a second chance to have a happy-ever-after or will stormy weather separate them forever. Ms. Layne has done it again and has written an exciting and passionate love story that is well worth reading and I hardily recommend it.
I received this book from the author and I am freely posting this fair and balance review.
Prairie Storm: Cowboys of the Flint Hills by Tessa Layne This is Axel Hansen and Haley Cooper's story.
Axel and Haley were college sweethearts but Haley broke his heart. Circumstances have Haley and Axel spending time together working on Haley's weather research. Will Axel and Haley get a second chance at love? There are so many ups and downs that these two go through. At moments you will cry or laugh.
I love this series. A steamy, emotional, and heartwarming story with lots of twists. Also, you learn a lot about meteorology. FYI, contains mature content. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
This story had it all reconnected lovers, family drama, danger, destruction, loss and rebirth. The rebirth was both for the family, the lovers, the town of Prairie and a newly formed family. I have enjoyed this series so far and this one may have just become my favorite because in the end the two in love Axel and Haley were both willing to give up their current lives to have the forever with the other, but compromise and some intervention got them to keep it all and have a life together.
Great book recommend to anyone who likes a happy ever after and for those who see a thrill in chasing tornados for a living.
What a book. This is a great love story. It is a story about a love that last the test of time and distance and second chances. It has emotions and drama between family and community as well as the main characters.. The chemistry and sexual tension between Axel and Haley is amazing. I was surprised about the depth of Axel's character from his part in prior books. This was another well written book in the series that I love. This is a must read. I received this book as a gift and voluntarily give this review.
This was an exciting, heart wrenching and steamy romance; back with the amazing cowboys of Prairie in the Flint Hills of Kansas. Axel is working hard on the family ranch, but isn’t truly happy, until Haley Cooper ends up back in town after 10 years to study tornadoes. The story is gripping and fun, but the weather isn’t the only turbulent experience in this book. I recommend this steamy and captivating read.
