Everything is Mama

Rate this book
The follow-up to NBC's The Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon's #1 New York Times–bestseller Your Baby's First Word Will Be Dada.

Everything is . . .

MAMA!

Jimmy Fallon, one of the most popular entertainers in the world, was on a mission with his first children's book to have every baby's first word be DADA. And it worked! A lot of babies' first words were DADA. However, everything after that was MAMA.

So take a lighthearted look at the world from your baby's point of view as different animals try to teach their children that there are other words in addition to MAMA for familiar objects and activities.

I’m sorry but this was terribly boring. By now you all probably know how I hide Clifford and Grug books at random times for my Mum to find. On Mother’s Day I’ll usually try to find her a really sweet kid’s book about how wonderful Mum’s are. I was test driving this book for this Mother’s Day’s selection and while the cover is so sweet, it quickly became a big fat ‘no’.

I guess Jimmy Fallon warns us with his title that everything is gonna be mama this, mama that, but after the second or third time I was wondering if this book would ever end. I can see the marketing potential for it and am sure plenty of Mums to be are going to receive this at baby showers around the world but if you’re looking for a baby shower book, you can do so much better!

The only saving grace of this book for me was illustrator Miguel Ordóñez who probably won’t get the credit they deserve for their lovely, age appropriate illustrations. They are the sweet I was looking for. It’s a shame the words didn’t work for me.

Reason to love your library #586: You can test drive books that you think you’ll love but don’t without having the regret of spending money on something you wouldn’t be happy with.

I knew I shouldn't have read the reviews of this.
I KNEW I shouldn't have read the reviews.
I KNEW IT.
...and still, I looked.

FFS, people, would you PLEASE stop rating a CHILDREN'S BOOK based on:
-your antipathy towards Jimmy Fallon's salary
-your antipathy towards Jimmy Fallon's political views
-your antipathy towards Jimmy Fallon's comedy (or lack thereof)
-your antipathy towards the easiness/simplicity of this book

Are you kidding me with the "there's no character arc?" SERIOUSLY? Have you READ Goodnight Moon? Not all books for babies have, um, character arcs?

Are you kidding me with the "it's terribly boring?" You DO know it wasn't written for an adult. Right?

Are you kidding me with "he's laughing all the way to the bank?" HA, HA, HA, he's not the only one. Let me introduce you to Jeff Kinney. That guy wrote a fairly pedestrian kid's book with a few stick figures and now he's a multimillionaire with movie deals and a series that draws kids like flies to honey. But because he's not on late night TV, you're not bothered, I guess.

Are you kidding me with "I hated his first book, and I hate this one too!"? If you hated his first book, why read the second? I don't like to waste my time that way, and neither should you. Also, spoiler alert, you are an adult, the book is not actually for you.

Are you kidding me with 'this book perpetuates the message that "mama" has no identity or sense of self outside of motherhood' ? To a baby (the target audience) their mama DOESN'T have any other identity. I'm a mother. I know my own identity. It's MY JOB TO TEACH THIS TO MY CHILDREN. My baby thinks I'm there to serve him. When he cries, I come. When he's unhappy, I fix it. Some day he'll be independent but it's my job to teach him how. This book reflects the baby outlook, not that mama outlook.

I can't, with these reviewers, sometimes.

True story: I found the book mildly entertaining. I'm sure on repeat x infinity reads, it would be annoying. It's not written for me, though, is it?

My five year old loved it. It snapped him right out of a foul morning mood. My six month old paid attention the whole time, and seemed entertained enough. This, folks, is the target audience, and let me tell you, the target audience was appreciative.

THE ONLY COMPLAINT that I would agree with is that the illustrator, who is terrific, should have been given much more prominent billing on the front of the book. Miguel Ordóñez is awesome.

As with the Dada book, let me caveat: I don't care one way or the other for Jimmy Fallon. Seriously! I have not once, ever, seen his show. But I like his books. And I love Mr. Ordóñez's illustrations.

I'm just tired of people wanting, idk, The Grapes of Wrath out of a children's book.

Another unwanted entry in the ever-growing "celebrities write books for kids" category. Wonderful how this book manages to gently balance both insipid and unfunny... and punctuate it all with a message that "mama" has no identity or sense of self outside of motherhood. THUMBS DOWN.

Oh, I almost forgot: GIANT THUMBS DOWN to this and the previous one like it (Your Baby's First Word Will Be DADA) for omitting the name of the illustrator on the cover of the book. Illustrators rarely get adequate billing--this is an issue that readers can involved with. If you are one such person, do please check out the ongoing campaign called #PicturesMeanBusiness.

The book, Everything is Mama" by Jimmy Fallon is a short and sweet, easy to read, postmodern picturebook. The story goes through different words, with an animal only replying "MAMA" to everything. This book really didn't have a lot of words, or context, it is just a very simple book that I assume is for children just now learning to read.

I think this is a circle story actually. At the beginning of the book, it says "Everything is Mama, according to you, but there are other fun words you'll want to know too." Then at the end of the book, it says "Everything is Mama, according to you. But one day you'll see Mama's everything is YOU." I thought that was such a precious ending that shows kids how much their mom loves them.

I was attracted to this book at first because of the author. Jimmy Fallon is a hilarious tv host so I wanted to see what his book would be like.

HOW CUTE was this book!!! The different animals on each page were just the cutest. How many times can I say cute in this review? lol!! I can't help it!! Super sweet book and was surprised to see that it was from Jimmy Fallon. If this is his first children's book, then I hope he continues to write more and more.

Cute book about a baby's first word(s). Although the edition I read is a Hardcover book, I think this is best suited for a board book to be read with babies and toddlers.

The adorable illustrations are colorful and cartoonish.

This was a very cute book that would be perfect for younger kiddos still learning how to talk. Neither one of my kids have called things “mama”, but this is still a cute sentiment.

This book is short and simple, and is great for teaching beginner words to little ones. I would definitely reread this to my infant as he gets older and starts talking more.

Ok, I'm actually reading more baby books than i intended to at this point, but duty calls. And let me tell you, this one was work to get through, even though it's like 9 pages long. Who is this for? It's not fun enough for children, it's not interesting enough for adults. (And it's not fun enough for adults or interesting enough for children.) It doesn't need to exist. You're better than this, Jimmy Fallon.

The last line was cute. The illustrations were fine quality wise. Those would get a 2.5 for average. However there was nothing to this. I cannot believe someone paid $34 for the box set of this for us. Kids books have very little to them to begin with. This was another lever of nothingness. A word for page for the 8 middle pages. And a sentence on each end. The main object being introduced to the child wasn't the largest thing in the picture so it wasn't good for kids even in that regard.... just bad. Comedians, please don't try to be funny and make the joke the structure of the kids books. Parents will be angry they wasted money on the product. Make the joke the story or something else. I know you can do it!
Don't waste your money on this. But please buy mine from me. I'll be selling the box set, lol.

Got this from my adult daughter for Mother's Day. Joy oozes out of each page, and who can't use more joy in their lives? Sure, there are maybe three dozen words, but so what? A good book is a good book no matter where you find it. As a former teacher, I'm not sure I would put this on a school shelf, because this should be more of a shared experience between parent and child.

"Everything is Mama according to you but one day you'll see, Mama's everything is you."

I thought this book was so cute and it held my little reader's attention. I especially liked the ending, I thought that was such a cute way to end the book!

But there are other fun words you'll want to know, too.

I read two books this year that were written by talk-show hosts called Jimmy. Everything is Mama by Jimmy Fallon was the worse of the two. I know, I know, the general discourse on this one is that it's cute and it makes light of an experience that many fathers, perhaps, experience. But it's just very pointless, simple, and silly.

I don't mean in a good way.

You know those moments when a celebrity for some wild reason thinks, hey, maybe I should write a children's book and it kind of just comes out lackluster and dumb? And to top it all off, he's not even the illustrator so how much work did he actually put into this?

Yeah, that's how I'd describe this book.

Now, you'll never catch me judging a kid for what they like to read. So, if for whatever reason this is the book your kid wants to read all the time, power to them. Other than minute entertainment for kids who are really close to their moms...this book is stupid and pointless. It doesn't really teach anything. There's no important message to learn or leave the book with.

It's just...silly.

I'll Give Fallon This...

No, wait. Miguel Ordóñez is actually the one who deserves the credit here: the artwork is pretty friggin cute. I honestly have nothing but praise for the downright adorable animal art in this book. I don't know if I can even say I have a favorite because they are all just so darn precious.

So, cute illustrations join ridiculous children's book story that never would have gotten published in the first place had its author not been famous for some other reason. Yay?

In the end...

I'm kind of at a loss, here. I don't hate the book, but I don't find it very impressive, either. It's a silly book idea that doesn't really have much substance at all. But yeah, if it gets a kid to read then it's not all bad. I wouldn't spend money on it, though.
