Tara Thomas’s love of books and writing started as a child and though she wanted to be an author, she decided a degree in science was more practical. After fifteen years in the pharmaceutical industry, she returned to her first love and hasn’t looked back since.
She writes erotic romance as Tara Sue Me. Her Submissive Series novels have been on both the New York Times and USA Today Bestseller lists. Her novel THE MASTER earned a starred review from Publisher’s Weekly, was awarded Best Romance of 2016 from Best Book Awards, and is a 2017 RITA Finalist for Best Erotic Romance.
Darkest Night by Tara Thomas is the first full length novel in the Sons of Broad romantic suspense series. There were three novellas that opened the series that featured a different main couple than the full length books do so it’s not totally necessary to have read them but they did give a glimpse into the story.
In this first full length book the story has been turned over to Tilly Brock and Keaton Benedict. Tilly had been working in the bar with the main character from the novellas where she admitted to still harboring a crush on Keaton but didn’t think their paths would ever cross again as they ran in completely different circles now.
One night Keaton happens into the bar where Tilly is working and when he sees her he is taken back to his teen years and their first kiss before they were abruptly separated. As the two begin a relationship though they find themselves quickly falling into danger as it becomes apparent Tilly is the target of a killer.
Darkest Night is one of those books that while I enjoyed it I do think there is room for improvements to be made in the next book. The series does seem to have a decent fast pace which I enjoy quite a bit and mixes the suspense and the steamy chemistry rather well as the story moves along.
However, in this opener I think it had a bit too much going on to be honest. Not only do you have Tilly, Keaton and the shadowy figures putting them in danger but the author tried doing a lot with the side characters in this one which could tend to lose focus. Tilly and Keaton hadn’t seen one another in years but you blink and they are in love, a little build up for them would have been nice instead of so much with the future characters in the series.
In the end I’m giving this installment of the series 3.5 stars and will still of course look forward to the next book but hopefully it focuses on it’s main couple and the danger instead of bringing in the extra that this one had.
I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.
So after reading the novellas in this series and enjoying them (for the most part), I was super curious to see how this author tackled the full-length stories. I was not disappointed. This was a pretty decent read. Oh sure the relationship was a little insta, and it had some crazy OW drama, but the mystery aspect was pretty well done. We get a tiny bit more insight into THE GENTLEMAN, and we are introduced to a new character JADE. I have a theory about Jade, and I can't wait to see if I am right or not. I loved Tilly and Keaton. Both were excellent main characters. In fact, I loved all the brothers. There was some background stuff going on during this book with both Knox and Kipling and their heroines (Bea & Alyssa). So that has me excited for those upcoming books. There was also some good sexy times sprinkled throughout. What more can you ask for? I enjoyed it. Therefore, yours truly is giving this one a solid thumb and a half up.
My Rating: 3.5 Stars I read this twice and I still couldn't find that connection I needed.
Money buys power, but power can be used for good or evil. Someone with a lot of money is out to destroy one of the “pillar” families in Charleston, a family who is not used to being challenged anywhere. Someone has a score to settle and their power is widespread. Their money and their mind games and their assassins are a deadly mix for Charleston and its people.
Years before, a major scandal cost Tilly and her family everything, including Keaton, now one of Charleston’s most eligible bachelor-playboys. Struggling to make her way through college working in an upscale “gentlemen’s” bar, she never expected to run into Keaton again or that they would have a second chance at love. Only a monster hidden in the shadows with a taste for vengeance will threaten all they could have had as he systematically murders those around them to let them know he is coming…Who is he coming for? Why? Who is the monster in the shadows?
DARKEST NIGHT by Tara Thomas is a tale of the privileged caught in a web of death, danger and desire. If the heat of passion doesn’t reel you in, the deadly mystery should, but be warned, threats come in all forms from all angles and more than one person does not want Keaton and Tilly together.
Just as the tension from the unknown elevates, just as the plot thickens, we are left hanging as we are tossed into another threat that feels too outdated to be relevant in the twenty-first century, manipulation for power through sex and a possible forced marriage.
There is a huge potential for a spellbinding thriller that, for me, was interrupted at the worst times by what should have been steamy and erotic moments that fell short. Perhaps because the characters just didn’t feel alive to me? Were too many characters introduced too quickly without enough depth for me? Lots of unanswered questions to carry over into the next part of the series and a villain that is shrouded in the shadows as a family used to wielding their power and money are discovering they are merely big fish in a small pond.

Tara Sue Me writes under the name of Tara Thomas in her newest romantic thriller series Sons of Broad. Darkest Night begins with Tilly Brock and Keaton Benedict. Tilly and her parents banished the town when her father was involved in a scandal in the Benedict Industries. All their hard earned fortune was stripped instantly and eventually losing Keaton. Eight years later, Tilly and Keaton reunited while she's working in the bar. Keaton never thought he'll see the woman he ever loved and this time, he won't let her go. However, their lives are in danger as the mysterious enemy constantly threats them. They must keep each other safe until they found out the suspect.
It was a solid romantic thriller. It's entertaining, fast paced and packed with events. Tara Thomas has a great writing style but I had a problem with the execution of the story. The scenes quickly shifted one to another and it confused me a bit. For example, I'm reading one scene with Tilly and Brock then it suddenly shifts to a new scene with "The Gentleman" (main antagonist) in it. I'm like "Who is this guy?". It took me a while getting used to the format and I just wish there's a divider on it to avoid confusion, at least for the antagonist's part.
The side characters were introduced really well here and we'll get to see the future couples. Of all the characters, Jade was the one who stood out for me. She's a complex anti-heroine and I'm dying to know her back story. Despite of being The Gentleman's soldier, she has conscience and good sense of judgment. I am curious with The Gentleman's real identity and hopefully we'll see more of him in the following books.
This was quite the steamy thriller! I just loved it! There were some moments that my kindle fogged up! I selected this book because I enjoy a good thriller and it was based in Charleston, where I currently live! I just love when a book is based in your home state and even better city! I love reading about the different wealthy societies and the eerie times in this thriller that definitely made my heart race! I really enjoyed this debut and would recommend it! Thank you so much to the publishers and NetGalley for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest!

Darkest Night is the first book in the Romantic Suspense Sons of Broad series. There were a couple of things I liked and a couple of things I didn't. It started great and I was looking forward to seeing how the two main characters Keaton and Tilly would reconnect and develop their relationship. Both of them were likable characters and had great personalities. However after being out of touch for eight years, they kind of rushed back into things pretty quickly. I would've wanted them to take it a bit slower and to reconnect more. Because of this it was harder for me to connect with them. I did love how they treated each other, there was a great mutual respect and open communication. They didn't try to 'protect' one another by withholding information.
I also had some issued with the suspense part. It was a bit of a chaos, and I got confused at times. Also there were a couple of loose ends, which left me unsatisfied. Those will probably be resolved in the upcoming books in the series. I did like Keaton's older brothers Knox and Kipling, and the author gave some insight into who their love interest will be in the next books. I think Darkest Night was an okay start to a new series. I am looking forward to the next books in the series because I want to know what will happen next. Also the writing was very pleasant and easy to read.

I am a sucker for any romance/romantic-suspense/mystery/cozy with its' setting in the South and Charleston is such a romantic and mysterious setting that I expected a lot more than I got for mood and setting. I love this region and I particularly love it when an author can make it live as another character in their books. So much for what I wish for. This book could have been set anywhere and was ridiculous, and not in a wonderful, funny way. It was ridiculous in a really badly written way. There were a lot of loose ends and I really don't care enough to subject myself to the other two books in this series to see them tied up. Only good thing is that the sex scenes were really hot.
Tilly Brock is working her way through school as a server in a gentlemen's club, aka a strip joint, but high class you see. She is on her own and making it work. Her family was once very well to do in Charleston, but in addition to losing their status, Tilly also lost her best friend, Keaton Benedict.
When Keaton Benedict, one of Charleston’s most notorious bachelor, sees Tilly at the club, he is struck by how much he lost when she left his life 8 years ago. He immediately wants to talk to her, but someone else has other ideas.
The young love these two shared never died for either of them. Now, as adults, they must see if that love is able to stand the bodies that are dropping all around them. And, the reappearance of Elise, who had staked a claim on Keaton long ago and is not about to let go.
When I started this series, with the novellas, Tara Thomas was a new to me author I hadn't read any of her books under her other pen name Tara Sue Me either, well that is definitely going to change. I am hooked on the Sons of Broad series! Although this is the first official book in the series I would highly suggest reading the three novels, Shattered Fear, Hidden Fate, and Twisted End that started it all, you don't need to in order to read this book but I feel the story that threads through the three novellas will add more dimension to the on going story.
Darkest Night was a suspenseful, fast-paced read with a second chance at love romance and a plot that never lets up.
After a shocking scandal destroyed her family, Tilly Brock learned the hard way that nothing in life is easy. For Keaton Benedict, everything came too easy as the privileged youngest son in the renowned Benedict family. When Keaton and Tilly meet for the first time in eight years, neither of them is sure what will come of their renewed friendship. But after a startling string of violence occurs connected to all aspects of Tilly's life, Keaton and Tilly's newfound relationship will be put to the ultimate test.
Tilly has had to take care of herself in the years since the scandal that destroyed her family. With both of her parents dead, she has learned to be independent and provide for herself. Only a few months from graduating after putting herself through college, Tilly is determined to hold onto her horrible job as a server at a gentleman's club to pay the bills until she graduates. Tilly is a very strong person and despite her bad situation, she is incredibly kind to others and always willing to help anyone out. She can be quite stubborn and resents being told what to do.
Keaton has always lived a privileged life as the youngest Benedict son. He's known as a bit of a playboy and has never found anyone he would consider settling down for. A recent college graduate, Keaton is expected to take up his place in the family company, but he struggles with accepting his future. Keaton would rather spend his time giving back to those less fortunate and instead would like to create a charitable division in the company to help those in need. Keaton is very close with his brothers and loves them despite their differences.
Tilly and Keaton were each other's first crushes and were together constantly as children due to their mothers being friends and them being neighbors. After Tilly moved away the two lost touch and didn't speak for nearly eight years. After finding each other again, the two quickly fall back into their old friendship and their relationship progresses very quickly from there. The two have great sexual chemistry and those scenes were quite enjoyable, but I struggled a bit with their relationship outside of the bedroom. I think everything just moved a bit too quickly for me to buy into the relationship.
It was exciting to see The Gentleman return after watching him orchestrate everything that happened in the prequel novellas. The man has a serious dislike of the Benedict family and I'm curious to eventually learn the reasoning behind that. People drop left and right in this book and I was honestly surprised by just how much violence there was. This book never lets up with the plot against Tilly and the Benedicts which definitely made my head spin a little. I'm interested to see where things go from here as not everything was resolved and it looks like we won't be seeing the last of The Gentleman for a while.
Darkest Night was a fun read and a good first full-length installment in the Sons of Broad series. I look forward to reading the second book in the series, Deadly Secret, when it releases next month. I would recommend reading the prequel novellas first as it gives you a better understanding of who some of the characters are.

I had the privilege of reading the prequel, Shattered Fear, prior to reading Darkest Night by Tara Thomas. I absolutely loved Shattered Fear, along with the characters and looked forward to that same attachment to Darkest Night. While there were a few crossover characters, you could easily read Darkest Night as a standalone, without reading the prequel novella. Note that this book ends in a major cliff hanger, so be prepared to be left hanging and waiting for book two.
Tilly Brock is a waitress at a gentleman’s club. She is working to put herself through school. Her path crosses with Keaton Benedict one night, and sparks fly as they try to pick up where they left off eight years earlier, before her once well to do family fell from their place in society due to a scandal come to light.
Keaton Benedict, a known playboy from a high class family in Charleston finds himself face to face with his childhood crush, whose family disappeared without a word many years earlier. Having never forgotten about her, he is completely taken with her, and feels like no time has passed since they were last together. He is determined to let nothing stand in the way of picking up where they left off all those years ago.
Things would be so simple if it were that easy, but it isn’t. Unforeseen circumstances prove to be a huge barrier to Keaton and Tilly finding happiness. Throw in some danger lurking with threats, murders and people disappearing and this love story takes on a whole new twist.
I was really looking forward to reading this book after greatly enjoying the novella. I found a connection with the characters in the prequel, and zoomed through the suspenseful pages. Unfortunately, I did not find that same connection with the characters in this book. I felt the suspense and drama unfolded at a less steady pace and by the end I desired a little more than the book delivered. It was still a good read, but I think this particular book in the series was more like 3.5 stars for me. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series in hopes of rekindling the connection I once found with these fascinating characters in Charleston.
Darkest night is the first full-length novel in the Sons of Broad series. As you might know, I was very eager to get my hands on this book because I wanted answers. The unfortunate thing is that I didn't get them and even worse I got more. We get deeper into the gentleman's world by reading a few parts from his point of view and Jade's. I know that is a little far-fetched, but I want Jabe to be the sister the Benedict's didn't know they had. Jade might not be the best person at the moment, but she can be forgiven.
The timeline of this book is a little unclear to me. I think the story begins around the time the first novella began and some point halfway it continues after the time the third novella ended. I hope that will be clearer when I read the second book. It drives me mad thinking that 5 books will be released in two months (the second book is coming on March 27th) and the third will be released in June. I don't know how much longer I can wait to find out what will happen to all the characters. In this book, we have a lot of things going on and I kept turning the pages to find clues and what the author planned for each character. I was happy with the romance and the suspence. We got teased about the upcoming couples and I am already invested in their stories. I would recommend the book and I will say that you don't have to have read the novellas to read this book, but since I enjoyed them I would say to read them too.
Having read the prequel novellas to this series, I was looking forward to reading more of this series. Even though I did take issue with the heroine of the novellas, I liked the overall mystery surrounding "The Gentleman." In this installment, there is a new couple featured that is also on the Gentleman's hit list for reasons that have not yet been revealed. While I enjoyed most of Tilly and Keaton's story, I did feel as though some threads were unresolved. Of course, the big one is who is the Gentleman and what is his endgame? There are still two more books in the series so I didn't expect a resolution on that front. But I'm wondering are all the unanswered threads connected? If they are, kudos to Tara Thomas for pulling it off. If not, well... Guess I'll just have to read the other books to make a final determination.
This book didn't work for me and I DNF'd. I didn't get far enough into the story to judge the writing. I just couldn't connect to the characters. I didn't realize it was a new adult story - I like my characters in romantic suspense to be a bit older and established. Thanks for the opportunity to review.
Darkest Night Sons of Broad #1 Tara Thomas 5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Amazing read!!! Couldn’t put it down! There’s a serial killer on the loose and you never know who is gonna be next. This was such a great start to this new series by Tara Thomas. It definitely gets your heart racing during some scenes. And you can’t stop reading because you have to know what’s coming next. Can’t wait to start on Book 2 Deadly Secret so I can get closer to finding out who the killer mastermind is. I have my ideas but we will see. Thanks NetGalley for the arc in exchange for my honest review.
The blurb made me want to read the book BUT the book did not live up to the blurb. I think this book should be marketed to YA/NA readers who may be more forgiving. As an introduction to a new series the brothers are introduced and we know they will each get their own book BUT for me I don’t think I am really interested in reading the series. That said, I would like to thank SMP and NetGalley for the ARC.
So, Tilly is working in a gentleman’s club and she and Raven are getting a lot of grief from twins that dance on stage. There is a “ruthless” killer out there killing off people that are close to Tilly. Keaton Benedict is the first boy that kissed Tilly and he shows up at the club Tilly works at. When she is threatened he takes her under his wing. Tilly will graduate from college soon and Keaton has just finished college and has an agenda for the family company (that I found rather unusual). There is someone called “The Gentleman” pulling the strings of what sounds like a secret group of some sort and he is the “mastermind” behind the drama of the story. Who is killing people was fairly easy to figure out. There was a lot going on but it didn’t seem to go anywhere…if that makes sense? Anyway, I finished it and do not think I will be reading more of this series.
After reading the three novellas that Tara released in the Sons of Broad series, I was excited to start reading the full length books that will release over the next few months. Darkest Night is the first of three and it is about Tilly Brock, a college student working as a cocktail server in a Gentlemen's club. We learned in those novellas that she has been harboring feelings for a certain boy she grew up with but has lost contact with for reasons she's not willing to disclose.
In Darkest Night, we find out why Tilly has lost contact with the boy, now a man, Keaton Benedict. A scandal involving her father and the company he worked for. A company owned by the Benedicts. But a chance meeting one night at the club that Tilly works for, and the dream she always had that Keaton would show up at her club and whisk her away finally comes true.
These two haven't seen each other in eight years, but when they talk again for the first time, it is like no time has passed at all. That connection is still there, the feelings they had for each other are still there, and they can't and don't want to fight them. The only issue is Elise, the girl, now a woman that they were friends with as a child is coming to stay at Keaton's house, and she has her sights set on marrying him!
This book is pretty fast paced, with lots of things happening. The mysterious Gentleman that we were first introduced to in the novellas, has put a plan in motion to exact some type of revenge or vengeance on the Benedicts, starting with the people around Tilly. Very quickly several of her coworkers are killed, with promises that she's going to be next. It's a race against time to try and figure out who is behind these attacks, with Alyssa Adams heading up the investigation. We first met her in the three novellas and her story will be told in book three of this series.
There's a lot of suspense, mystery, that feeling of something building towards a dramatic conclusion. We don't get the overall conclusion yet as we still have two books to go before we find out who The Gentleman is, and why he's doing what he's doing. Some Benedict family secrets are revealed in this book, and we meet a new character, Jade, that I have put a pin in as an integral part of this story.
The other woman drama brought on by Elise was a storyline in and of itself, and it was interesting how things she did overlapped with things done by those working for The Gentleman, so it kept Keaton and Tilly off balance until the end. I am excited to continue with this series to learn more about The Gentleman and Jade. Book two is about Knox Benedict and Bea Jacobs, the half sister to Brent Taylor, whose story is told in the three novellas. There's something going on between Bea and Knox that will be uncovered in Deadly Secret.
I had some trouble connecting to Tilly and Keaton, and I think it is because this series is written in third person, so we're not completely in the heads of the characters, and it's more of a telling us rather than showing us story. I had the same issue when I read the novellas about Brent and Janie. I try to keep that in mind while reading and it's hit or miss whether I end up connecting with the characters on a more personal level. I'm moving on to book two to see what's in store for us next!
NetGalley and St. Martin's Press provided me an advance copy of the book in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.
A week after Tilly Brock's first kiss with her childhood best friend Keaton Benedict, her father was accused of embezzling from Keaton's father's powerful shipping industry and her family's standing in Charleston was ruined. Now back in Charleston and working as a waitress in a gentlemen's club Tilly fantasizes that one day the boy she left behind will come walking through the door - and then he does.
Keaton Benedict never forgot about Tilly Brock nor did he ever quite believe what he father was accused of. Now years later when he reconnects with her by chance and realizes their old attraction is still there and stronger than ever he knows that he doesn't want to lose her from his life again.
But someone in the shadows has an old grudge against the Benedict family and he's targeting the Benedicts through the people they care for the most and when bodies begin dropping at their door Keaton and Tilly will have to rely on each other and the strength of the Benedict family to stop a killer before it's too late.
I really liked Darkest Night. The story draws you in, told in multiple perspectives including the mysterious "The Gentleman." Who is the Gentleman? Why does he hate the Benedict family so much?
I liked the pacing of the book although it felt too fast in places... I swear there were two or three deaths in three days. I would have drawn it out a little more. The suspense was gripping and I couldn't wait to find out what would happen, but this book doesn't give a true resolution but a lead into the second book. I'm not sure we'll get an answer as to who The Gentleman is until the third book, but I'm sure it will keep me reading the series until I find out! I loved the Benedict brothers and Tilly's relationship with Keaton, although at times some of the things he said to her were a little cheesy.
The one thing I didn't like in this book was the Elise subplot. There's a killer after Tilly but hey, let's add in someone blackmailing Keaton into marriage just for the hell of it. It should have been one or the other or maybe Elise as the killer in my opinion. I also didn't feel like I got a true handle on Tilly's father's embezzlement. Did he do it or not? Will the answer be revealed in a future book?
Overall, I really liked this book. It reminded me of an early Carly Phillips crossed with Lisa Jackson and I couldn't put it down! I can't wait to read the next two books!
This first book in the Sons of Broad series hooked me and made me want to read the next book. This is a romantic suspense read that moves quickly, and it has a slightly over the top soap opera feel. This series features the wealthy and influential Benedict family, namely brothers Knox, Kipling, and Keaton. This book focuses on Keaton, who unexpectedly reconnects with his childhood sweetheart, Tilly Brock.
Tilly and Keaton have explosive physical chemistry which is prominent in this story. To complicate matters, there is the seemingly evil and insane Elise, who has ties to Keaton's family and is blackmailing him to marry her.
But Elise is not Keaton and Tilly's only concern. There is also a murderer on the loose who seems to be targeting and closing in on them. The darkly menacing and dangerous character, The Gentleman, lurks throughout the book. There is also the mysterious young woman, Jade, who has some association with The Gentleman but there are hints that more is to be explained in upcoming books.
What I disliked about this book was that it is not a standalone and absolutely nothing is resolved at the end. Similar to a soap opera, everything carries over to the next installment. I would have preferred fewer cliffhangers as I was left feeling like the entire story was left incomplete. Having said that, I did like the introductions of Kipling, Knox, and their love interests, and presume they will feature in later books in this series.
My Review of “Darkest Night” by Tara Thomas, St. Martin’s Press, February 27,2018
“Darkest Night” by Tara Thomas is an intense and captivating novel of suspense, romance, and thrilling mystery. There are betrayals, deep secrets, revenge, jealousy, danger and murder. The author weaves her story around the wealthy and successful Benedict Brothers in Charleston. There is at least one deadly enemy sworn to destroy them. There are many twists and turns.
The author describes are characters as complex and complicated. Some seem dysfunctional and psychotic. One of the Benedict brothers, Keaton sees Tilly Brock, a former childhood friend. Tilly’s father had worked for the Benedicts and was accused of embezzling company funds. Tilly’s family had to leave, and Keaton never realized where she was.
Tilly works at a Men’s Club, bartending, while making the money she needs to finish college to become a teacher. Someone not only has it in for the Benedicts, but also has threatened Tilly. When Keaton and Tilly get together, there are dead bodies turning up.
What is going on? Who is the enemy that wants to destroy the Benedicts, and why? I would recommend this book for readers of Mystery and Romance. There are some hot sexy scenes in this book as well. I received an ARC from NetGalley for my honest review.
Tara Thomas is a new-to-me author of romantic suspense. This author writes erotic romance under the pen name Tara Sue Mae, but I had never read her books. Her new series “Sons of Broad” is off to a great start with this first full-length installment. An emotional and heartwarming story of true love is deftly intertwined with a suspenseful storyline featuring murders of young women. The dark and chilling mystery hooked me and I enjoyed the charming romance between the main characters. That being said, the pacing of the story felt a bit off to me, jumping from high point to high point. The story is told in multiple point of views, and I was sometimes disoriented when the POV shift occurred.
Keaton Benedict and Tilly Brock shared a soul-deep connection, but their worlds were both shattered when Tilly, forced into a heartbreaking decision, unexpectedly leaved town. Tilly’s father lost everything and she was ashamed about the stigma on her family. Fast forward eight years, she is back. She has been working at a gentleman club to pay her way through college. The club has been the target of a serial killer and she lives in fear.
Keaton and Tilly’s reunion is heartwarming and bittersweet. It puts them both in danger but Keaton doesn't care because he loves Tilly and will protect her at all costs. His warmth and strength comfort her. Keaton Benedict is endearing, gentle and determined, a perfectly likeable character. The romantic buildup was well done and sweet.
I really loved the mystery aspect of this book, it was intriguing and even scary at times because I wasn't sure what to expect. The secondary characters add depth to the story. One of them, the Gentleman, stands out as a remarkably evil character, pivotal in the suspense. His aim is the end of the Benedict business empire but his motivations are still unclear.
While some things are answered, there are more questions left open for the next book, featuring the middle Benedict brother, Knox. Overall, despite a few quibbles, Darkest Night was a compelling read.

Darkest Night is the first in a new series that centers on the Benedict Brothers. They are heirs to an empire. Someone seems to have it out for them but who? This one focuses on the youngest of the brother, Keaton and his childhood sweetheart, Tilly.
For the most part, I enjoyed the book. I liked the brothers and their relationship. There is a mysterious man named The Gentleman who is out to destroy the brothers and those close to them. We don't get any answers really as to who he is or why. It seems his story will be an arc over the series of the book.
While I liked Keaton and Tilly together, I thought their relationship went a bit fast for me. Tilly's world was destroyed by the boys' father when they were younger. She doesn't seem to have much animosity toward Keaton when they first meet up again. I would have expected more angst. I also would have liked more resolution to what really happened with her father and the supposed embezzlement. Hopefully that will be resolved later in the series. Still, it was a fun read and I recommend it. The book does end on a bit of a cliffhanger, so I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next.
" Darkest Night", is the first book in Ms Thomas's series Sons of Broad Street and gets four solid stars from me. Ms Thomas has created a suspense filled second chance romance story that centers around a wealthy Charleston family , The Benedicts. Unbeknownst to any of the Benedict brothers they have an enemy plotting their take down but not just financially the Villian is attacking on a personal level also. So for our two main characters Keaton Benedict and Tilly Brock their reburgeoning romance is consistently put to the test . Our Villian known only as The Gentleman has set in motion a plan to bring the Benedicts to their knees attacking Tilly's co- workers then ransacking her apartments forcing her to move in with Keaton. Then on another front the Villian goes after the two other Benedict boys and who they love . To further keep us on our toes Ms Thomas throws in Elisa Germain , former best freind to Tilly ; but now an enemy . Elise has designs On Keaton with large plans , such as making him her husband and she is not beyond blackmail to get what she wants. Throw into the mix a somewhat inept and possibly crooked Charleston PD. And the plot line gets just a little more twisted. The storyline certainley kept me reading , the hot sexy romance scenes between Keaton and Tilly kept the romance alive and the suspense of waiting for the next tragedy to strike moved the plot along. I truly enjoyed this story and just a warning since this is the first in a series we do not get a resolution on the Villian , so settle in for the long haul ; personally I am looking forward to reading the next story! This first Sons of Broad book is romantic suspense with a heavy emphasis on suspense. Someone wants Tilly Brock dead. That same someone also wants to bring down the wealthy and powerful Benedict family.
Keaton Benedict is the youngest of the three Benedict brothers. He's a recent college graduate who wants to begin a division in Benedict Shipping for charitable giving. He's with some friends at a gentleman's club celebrating his graduation when he spots Tilly.
Keaton and Tilly were best friends on their way to a romance when she disappeared from his life. He was told that her father embezzled from the Benedict Company, was fired, and moved the family to Texas. In fact, they just moved to a different part of Charleston and dropped out of the upper social circle. Her father and mother both died leaving Tilly to struggle to make her way through college - thus the reason for working at a gentleman's club.
Soon after they met again, bodies started appearing around them. First Tilly's friend from work. Then two of the dancers from the club. Keaton's older brother was briefly a suspect in the second dancer's death.
Added to the confusion, a young woman who is determined to marry Keaton and who is a family friend has come to spend the summer with the Benedicts. She is not above using blackmail or murder to get her way and convince Keaton to marry her. Initially, it was hard to decided if she was part of the bigger plot to bring down the Benedicts.
Then there is the villain of the piece - The Gentleman - and his henchwoman/victim Jade. The Gentleman is involved in all sorts of crime in Charleston including human trafficking and he's the one who wants the Benedicts destroyed. Jade is an interesting character because she has been raised and brainwashed by The Gentleman to hate the Benedicts but is starting to question what she has been taught.
The romance storyline between Keaton and Tilly is brought to resolution in this book but the suspense plot will need resolution in the upcoming books in the series. This was a busy story with lots of threads.
This was a good start to a new series. There was enough suspense to keep my interest. It is almost a second chance romance for Tilly and Keaton. It was fun to see them maneuver everything being thrown their way, while trying to discover their feelings for each other. Im hoping this book is setting up some of the romances we will see in the future books. Fair warning, not all questions you have will be answered in this book.
3.5 stars Darkest Night was filled with suspense, and there were some truly evil characters here. While I enjoyed Tilly and Keaton, there was a bit of the damsel in distress here, just as in the prequel novella. And I'm sure I'd have enjoyed this story even more if Tilly had been a little less weepy.
Exciting new to me author, Ms. Thomas, transports me away into a world of intrigue, betrayal and brotherhood. Full disclosure, I did not read the blurb. There are two people at St. Martin's who seem to really match me up to new authors I will enjoy. I went into the story cold as Meghan from St. Martin's has yet to steer me wrong. I'm glad she sent this book to me because now I have a new author to add to my collection of must reads.
From the very first page, my attention is captured. Tilly Brock is a hard working girl in a gentleman's club. She waitresses to pay for her education. She wants to be a teacher. Going from a well to do middle class family to barely making ends meet has been a difficult adjustment during her teenage years. Now, months away from earning her degree and starting the life she's work towards, her past slams into her. Specifically, her youthful crush on the rich and charming Keaton Benedict walked into the club during a bachelor party and catches sight of her.
This reunion immediately pulled me in. Is this a white knight theme where the rich boy saves the poor girl? Will this be trite and a long drawn out "why we can't be together" romance? None of the above. Instead, Ms. Thomas brings a refreshing tale of friends reuniting and clearing up past misconceptions. There are no contrived conflicts through miscommunications. Instead, it is a new look into the past and how children take what adults say for granted.
I really liked Tilly. Her character is endearing because even through all the hardship, she is a positive person who gives her best. She may have times of petty thoughts, but overall, she's relate-able and the kind a friend that should be treasured. I also liked Keaton. He is a straight shooter who won't be pushed into a corner. His open and honest communication with Tilly is admirable and made the story so smooth for me. Their budding relationship is sweet and they are adorable together.
This story could be a simple second chance romance. It is so much more. There are dark secrets that come to light. An unknown nemesis is out to destroy Keaton and his family. The little bits of clues here and there keep it suspenseful. I'm still not sure who the villain is and I'm sure I'll be shocked when it is revealed. The plot twists and little turns here and there because of the multiple subplots keeps this story sharp and action packed. The downtime with the sensual romance between Tilly and Keaton help balance the dark.
For readers who are eagerly awaiting the next Nora Roberts book, come read Ms. Thomas's books. This romance suspense is recommended to all romance readers.
If you want to know how the 10% live and love, try this mystery/romantic suspense. If you're curious about the links some will go to in order to.maintain their status, or to feed their greed, or to boost their status (or just cause they're sadistic, cruel, and unconscionable), take a close look at DARKEST NIGHTS. The War Between the States was not the only trouble that came to Charleston.
DARKEST NIGHTS is a fast-paced and sometimes gritty mystery that will entice and enthrall fans of Romantic Suspense.
I began reading this full-length novel in this series after finishing the first novella, in which Tilly and the background of the mystery are introduced. Like with the novella, I found the plot interesting, and I think this author tells a good story. What I didn't like in this one had to do with the Elise character. I do not enjoy books with anything close to a love triangle, or a vindictive ex, or some other third-party love interest causing problems, or anything along those lines. And had I known such a character would be in this one, I would have passed on the opportunity to read it. I don't know why publishers (or whomever writes the blurbs) have taken to leaving out such things in the book descriptions, but I'm growing increasingly frustrated with it. So, if such things don't bother you and you like a good mystery, give this one a try; the plot is interesting. Note, however, that it's definitely part of a series, and I personally think it's one that you'll need to read in order if you want the full enjoyment of it.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC for review.
This book seemed to jump around a lot and the conversations weren’t very cohesive. I just don’t have the want to try and figure it all out. It wasn’t making sense and I got bored pretty quickly.
Also, I got an uncorrected ARC and it had tons of errors that really messed with my enjoyability of the story line.
This is my first book by Tara Thomas. The story was good. It kept me interested and once I was finished I was ready to run out and get the second book in the series. I will hopefully get a chance to pick that up this weekend and get started on it.
