With Shiva and Vishnu as parents, a child's life is bound to be unusual. Ayyappan's courage is unlimited and his wisdom unmatched. Vicious tigresses fall under his spell just as avenging demons succumb to his divine strength. Only power-crazed human beings are foolish enough to try to destroy this extraordinary lad. But, as he ascends to his rightful place as the god of Shabarimala, the glow of Ayyappan's compassion makes even earthly riches lose their glitter.
Another wonderful title from ACK! The story of Ayyappan (A) reminded me of the story of Moses; a child that is raised and finds that there is a higher calling that they must follow. Really liked the way A always was true to his destiny, always understanding that he had a duty to preform that transcended his own desires.
This book tells us about the life of Lord Ayyappan and the reasons for his arrival on this earth. Lord Ayyappan's celestial parents are Lord Shiva and Mohini - who is nothing but a form of Lord Vishnu.
The reason for Lord Ayyappan's incarnation on earth was to destroy the demoness Mahishi because she had received a boon from Lord Brahma that neither Vishnu nor Shiva could kill her. King Rajashekhar of Kerala, who was a devotee of Shiva, had no heir. He and his wife performed a Yagya, which got them Manikantha on the bank of a river, who was none other than Lord Ayyappan. Readers must read what happens next, I don't to spoil the experience by telling the complete story here. It is a very engaging read.
I didn't know until today that Chamundi residing in Chamudi hills the diety of Chamundeswari temple and Ayyapan residing in Swami were contemporaries.
Chamundi killed Mahisha the demon. Ayyapan killed Mahisha's wife Mahishi.
Makes me wonder that it is impossible that epics like Mahabaratha or all the devotional stories are made up. One must be out of the world intelligent to make up and retain the consistency between these plots.
The book and the illustrations inside were amazing and most important of all, it had shown the reason for Ayyappan incarnating as a small boy to end the evil demoness Mahishi, who had a boon from brahma that neither Shiva nor Vishnu would be able to kill her. However, the diwan of the king of Kerala was a greedy man who wanted to grab the throne after the king's death. So he bribed the queen to pretend to have a headache and bribed the physician to tell the king that the tigress's milk is the only cure. The idea was that when he would go to get the milk, the tigress would kill him and the diwan could become the king. In the forest, he killed the evil Mahishi and rode the tigress home. Overall it was amazing and I totally recommend it.
