Ackshat Deoli is a freelance writer whose only passion is writing fiction. He has written for many illustrious clients as well as services and has already published a short story 'Murder in Orange County'. From a very small age, Ackshat was driven to books like a moth to a flame but he never knew that he wanted to be a writer until he wrote a short story and really loved the process of framing a story. Ackshat Deoli has penned this story with a lot of elan and enthusiasm which fact reflects in the whole book. it is a story of Chikki an orphan and her precocious achievements against all the odds. The author has made it an enjoyable read by his rhetoric of prose and a strong plot with drama and suspense.Yes, there are so many deplorable and stressful situations and circumstances in Chikki's life. But she handles them with a lot of maturity ,wit and wisdom.
The author has given so much attention to not only Chikki's actions but also to her thoughts. He has projected her as a self -made celebrity. Her aim is to become a great author like Agatha Christie, H.W.Longfellow or Ruskin Bond. She becomes a manager in the Cafe coffee day and she wins second prize from an entry she has sent to the Brussels Literature fest. In the book, Kilol-Brruges Express: The Fading Nomad, the author has bridged a breathtaking journey between Kilol, a small village located at a distance of 60 kilometers from New Delhi, and Bruges, a high-end city in Belgium.
The story starts when Chikki, a dusky colored twelfth grader, wakes up to the persistent calling of her mother, who like most of the women in her village wants her daughter to take her education very seriously, but that only with the dream of fixing her with a rich groom. It is important to notice that the protagonist, who has been portrayed by the narrator as an extremely pretty girl, is time and again advised by her mother to do something about her dusky complexion. Her mother makes it clear for Chikki that the grooms these days do not settle for anything less than a fair and lovely bride, which again tells us something about the background Chikki has come from.
From the very beginning, we get the idea that the people in Kilol still are, from top to bottom, drenched in the very idea of Patriarchy. However, what is amazing to see is that even though Chikki has never put a foot outside her village, she does not easily comply with the general stereotypes of the villagers. Also, she is a little apprehensive about downright rejecting her mother’s moralistic view on life, yet she does not at any point agree to entirely abide by them. And a glimpse of her independent thinking could be seen in the way she remembers her dead father. When you will read the book, you will clearly see what I meant there.
The beauty of this book completely lies in its overwhelming pace. It does not give you space to breathe or to even think. Perchance, you decide to turn down the invitation that every next page has to offer and rather take time, understanding Chikki and her moods, then, you, my dear friend, are in for a long haul. Here, every sentence alludes to a complete and an entirely new story.
The cycle of light and dark repeats quite often in Chikki's life, and neither afraid of what could be hidden in the dark nor overwhelmed by the beauty of light, she keeps on scuffling with life as it comes. She does not plan before acting, she learns to act with the plan. She is a fearsome believer! She is not afraid of risking all her potential over the altar. And since she is ready to sacrifice so much, she is openly blessed with all the spotlight and success.
In Chikki's words,
"You see, us thinking about not taking risks and playing it safe, is just a variant of trying to have one part of the pattern and that is a crest, which certainly is not possible. The Zenith of the peak of mountains has to be balanced by the nadir of the depth of the seas."
'Kilol-Bruges Express: The Fading Nomad' is aptly named which narrates Chikki’s journey.
The journey starts with a void space in the tender heart without any passions, desires or targets in life. The traits get instilled in heart time & again as Chikki’s journey unfolds. And the best part is, neither her thoughts nor her actions instill these traits, but her impulsive dreams & unplanned encounters do the job. Though the journey is not conventional, author tried to define a pattern to these impulsive dreams and fortunately, he is successful in doing the same.
An impression will be left in reader's mind and the biggest thought I am left with is, 'How many of us stay true to our hearts as we grow old, still retain our raw or unadulterated status and achieve something, preferably with the loved ones'?
Story is unfolded in most subtle way and is a must read for the readers who enjoy youth adult contemporary fiction stories with philosophies blend with logics at various stages of the story. Good attempt Ackshat Deoli, your work is worth a read and worth a remembrance !
Kilol-Bruges Express by Ackhat Deoli is a short, lucid and deep read which describes an interview of a successful author who lived a bold life. It is about a woman who is from a poverty stricken village and her lost both her parents, her struggles, her journey. Will she ever be able to follow her passion? Her journey is set to be an inspiration for all those women who struggle against the societal norms to find themselves. I just wanted the book to be lengthier and more stark with a bit more emphasis on characters. The book cover and blurb are appropriate and at par with the story. It is a light good read.
'Kilol-Bruges Express: The Fading Nomad' The name itself made me keep my hands on the book. Beautifully written and a short one . Its about a journey of a woman from a village in India to a city in Belgium. Its a wonderful read.
Full disclosure : I received this book via giveaway
Things I liked : 1. Awesome writing style : Some lines like "Silence echoed through microphone", "If I bargain, does it mean I am poor" were simply gold. 2. The character development.
Things I disliked: 1. It seems like book has been cut short intentionally. Some characters were simply left hanging. And 2. Reader was left with lot of questions:
It is an amazing book for all the people especially who love fiction. The author has shown various aspects of life like love, pain, romance and success. I strongly recommend everyone to read it.
Got the book as a giveaway, thanks to the author for it. Will write the review once I complete it.
Edit : Completed. A nice effort for sure. It was smooth, and since it was a short one I didn't likely wanted to keep it down too else maybe I'd have.
The story was simple and lovely, it seemed all realistic. The main character had some depth, as I believe, strengthening of the protagonist is very important for a book, you should feel him, his actions, his words. The writing was somewhat naive, there is a scope of improvement there. For instance, a guy from 'states' won't talk like, "I told you no!", it will be like, "I told you, right?".
The end was a cliche but still was fine.
A fine book for a short read, may leave a tinge feel good. :)
Amazing read! I totally loved the way the author has written the book! And the best part is that the perception of life changes each time you read this book. This book is going to be the game-changer of how books are written and perceived these days especially in the local audiences. Kudos to the author for such a brilliant job!
The book is in the form of an interview. An award winning film director, Mrs. Kumar shares the journey of Chikki, a girl from a small place called Kilol, 60 kms from Delhi and her journey to Bruges, a posh city in Belgium through the entire book in the interview. Chikki lost her father when she was 10 and her mother at the age of 17 which is the stage where Chikki's story starts in the book. She's a girl who has dreams of going out of that small place for further studies and her mother catapults her journey by helping her in taking the first step by saving enough to have placed her in a good college in Delhi. Chikki is born with very traditional and sometimes conservative Indian values where a girl has to be fair to get a desired groom or exceptionally good in her career. Chikki did not have the previous factor which is why she was encouraged by her mother to focus on the later. Chikki is tied with traditional values and modern aspirations. She wants to pursue writing in near the future and her lust for books and reading gives her the edge and very obviously why English and literature remains her forte in academics. She falls in love with a guy while in Delhi and gets married to him and moves to Florida. While there, Chikki starts writing fiction and wins a second prize in a competition in Brussels. The protagonist, Chikki's life story is inspiring with her set of struggles and shortcomings from losing parents at an early age to life's hurdles towards the later stages of her life and she emerges beneath everything continuing in her life with penance and grace. She breaks stereotypes and is yet the traditional girls with values from Kilol. She's moody, determined, yet calm and composed.
Gotta say wasn't interested much when read the preface of the story but the content was entirely different. An interesting interpretation style by the writer, credit for that. The characters were intriguing and in terms contrasted from each other. But the end did disappoint me thats all I got to complain about.
