This is the new edition of chemical and process engineers' favorite reference. Previous editions of this authoritative, comprehensive handbook have sold more than 887,000 copies. This Seventh Edition contains 50% new or revised material, including new information on condensers, reboilers, evaporators, and vessels; multicomponent and enhance distillation including azeotropic, extractive, and reactive methods; gas absorption processes with data on plate performance, plate design, and packed towers, super-critical fluid and membrane separation processes; biochemical separation processes; materials of construction; and materials for process applications. The Handbook is once again the standard in the field--with all the facts, figures, methods, and data engineers rely on and need.
I think it is high time I paid some tribute to this fantastic book, which was my lifeblood during the five years I spent as an engineering student. It is called the Bible of Chemical Engineering; and it is.
This hefty tome includes all things imaginable which can be clubbed under the title of "Chemical Engineering". We had to lug it around for all design exams, and it helped build some muscles too!
This cost me the grand sum of Rupees 219 in 1984, enough to buy a dozen meals at posh restaurants in those days. Very soon, due to depreciation of the rupee, the prize was in thousands. But students just had to have a copy (the library was always in short supply).
Now, it is available in soft copy, beautifully hyperlinked so that you don't have to keep on turning the pages to switch between chapters.
(One interesting thing... we never used to call it handbook, but just "Perry", after the author. This is similar to the colloquial term for the penis in Malayalam, so we had many hilarious puns - "My Perry is so heavy", "Carrying my Perry everywhere is becoming a pain", "Wait, just let me take out my Perry", etc.) ;)
The Bible for Chemical engineers: A Must-Read if want to look for conversion factors and rare formulas. When not in use, this thick text can be used as a mini coffee table.
Bible of chemical engineering, I own the 5th and 7th edition. 5th is actually better as it is all in english units and has many of the old empirical formulas. Much to the new engineer's disgust computer simulations used now many times do not include the preverbal "fudge factor" that ends up allowing the whole system to operate in the long term.
Nestor
Perry's book is no doubt a comprehensive book for chemical engineering, understandably the "bible" for students. Personally I discovered a great combo if I use Perry's book together with this book called "Engineering Problems for Undergraduate Students" by Ng, publisher's Springer. The second book helps you practice applying concepts you learn in Perry's to solving common exam problems, step-by-step solutions worked out!
Both books work so well together in explaining concepts and then training the ability to tackle exam questions. Highly recommended study method especially for busy students without much time for revision...
