About the author

Georges Joseph Christian Simenon (1903 – 1989) was a Belgian writer. A prolific author who published nearly 500 novels and numerous short works, Simenon is best known as the creator of the fictional detective Jules Maigret.
Although he never resided in Belgium after 1922, he remained a Belgian citizen throughout his life.

Simenon was one of the most prolific writers of the twentieth century, capable of writing 60 to 80 pages per day. His oeuvre includes nearly 200 novels, over 150 novellas, several autobiographical works, numerous articles, and scores of pulp novels written under more than two dozen pseudonyms. Altogether, about 550 million copies of his works have been printed.

He is best known, however, for his 75 novels and 28 short stories featuring Commissaire Maigret. The first novel in the series, Pietr-le-Letton, appeared in 1931; the last one, Maigret et M. Charles, was published in 1972. The Maigret novels were translated into all major languages and several of them were turned into films and radio plays. Two television series (1960-63 and 1992-93) have been made in Great Britain.

During his "American" period, Simenon reached the height of his creative powers, and several novels of those years were inspired by the context in which they were written (Trois chambres à Manhattan (1946), Maigret à New York (1947), Maigret se fâche (1947)).

Simenon also wrote a large number of "psychological novels", such as La neige était sale (1948) or Le fils (1957), as well as several autobiographical works, in particular Je me souviens (1945), Pedigree (1948), Mémoires intimes (1981).

In 1966, Simenon was given the MWA's highest honor, the Grand Master Award.

In 2005 he was nominated for the title of De Grootste Belg (The Greatest Belgian). In the Flemish version he ended 77th place. In the Walloon version he ended 10th place.

Χμμ με είχε προβληματίσει το φιναλε του έργου και μπορώ να πω ότι είχα μείνει με το wtf για μια μέρα αλλά διαβάζοντας τη βιογραφία του ξεδιπλώθηκε στο κεφάλι μ το γιατί... ξέρω ότι είναι γνωστός για τα αστυνομικά του και τον μαιγκρε που δεν ξέρω γτ αλλά εμένα δεν είναι τα έργα τ που ξεχωρίζω αλλά όταν αποφασίσει να το πάει αλλού τον αγαπώ... και μάλλον αυτό το βιβλίο είναι από τα πιο πονεμένα και αυτοβιογραφικά του. Η κόρη του Simenon αυτοκτόνησε και μάλλον αυτό είναι ένα από τα έργα που προσπαθεί να ξορκίσει τα φαντάσματα του . Δείχνοντας ότι είναι τόσο κοντά όσο και μακρυά και αγγίζοντας την αποτυχία. Όντως το φιναλε ήταν λίγο απότομο αλλά μάλλον είναι ψυχικό το ζήτημα εκεί έφτανε . Το έργο είναι μια καταγγελία στο αταίριαστο αρκετά μεροληπτικό αλλά εξηγείτε αν βάλεις τον ίδιο στη θέση του πατέρα . Θα το ξεχωρίσω τελικά ... και θα αναιρεσω την αρχική κριτική των 2 αστεριών .

Read in fits and starts in French to keep my eye in.

As with most Simenon novels, it was an easy read, and not terribly long. However, I didn't fully empathise with Juliette or Emile, so I didn't really care what happened to them in the end.

Juliette est un personnage sans relief, un bout de carton aurait eu autant de charisme. Heureusement que c’était court (150 pages), mais c’était quand meme 75 pages de trop.

Με το βιβλίο αυτό, επιχειρείται να αναδειχθεί η μοιρολατρική προσέγγιση και η δειλία των όλων των πρωταγωνιστών.
Στις όποιες επιβληθείσες έξωθεν μεταβολές (βλ. πατέρας) ή δυσκολίες (βλ. Εμίλ και Ζυλιέτ), καταγράφεται μια απαθής και άβουλη στάση των πρωταγωνιστών να αντιδράσουν, να αναλάβουν δράση, να αναφέρουν τι επιθυμούν. Και η όποια πατρική ή ερωτική/συντροφική σχέση τους παρακινούσε αρχικά να δράσουν με τον καιρό αδρανεί, καθώς ο κάθε πρωταγωνιστής δεν αναγνωρίζει, πλέον, το άτομο για το οποίο παρακινήθηκε να δράσει. Εν ολίγοις, η δειλία και η μοιρολατρική προσέγγιση οδηγεί στην αποξένωση.
Θα ήθελα να παραθέσω και μία φράση στο τέλος του βιβλίου, που θεωρώ ότι είναι ενδεικτική των ανωτέρω : "Η Ζυλιέτ είχε στρώσει το τραπέζι, από συνήθεια, γιατί έπρεπε να ενεργήσει έτσι ώστε η ζωή να συνεχίζεται", καθώς η πρωταγωνίστρια καταφεύγει σε επαναλαμβανόμενες, οικείες και κυρίως ασφαλείς κινήσεις για να αποφύγει να αναλάβει ουσιώδη δράση, να δείξει δυναμική διεισδυτικότητα ...

La quatrième de couverture de mon édition Folio de 1977 illustre parfaitement ce roman : avec la minutie magique de son écriture, Simenon entraine le lecteur tout au long de ce récit haletant, piégé par les réseaux toujours plus étroits de la fatalité.
On ne peut qu’être soulagé que la fatalité s’occupe du personnage principal, nerveux, méchant, pauvre type. La traque de cet homme et du personnage vide de Juliette, dans Paris, est rendue fascinante par l’écriture de Simenon.

Juliette est aussi indolente qu’Émile est nerveux. Elle fugue avec lui à Paris. Pourquoi ? L’aime-t-elle ? … peut-être ne le sait-elle même pas vraiment.

This comprises two stories on one theme, escape: Escape from crime and escape from the patterns of your life (Simenon’s favorite theme). The first novella (although it is the length of one of the romans durs) is “The Lodger,” in which a killer hides out in a boarding house. He loses all sense of reason and reverts to childhood, identifying his landlady as a mother figure. She sees in him a wayward son. In the appropriately named “One Way Out” a fugitive absconds with his beloved. Both stories focus on the nature of love, or lack thereof. The first story is okay; the second is flat out brilliant. The first story gets three stars, the second five. It is one of the bleakest looks at alienation in an absurd universe this side of Camus,

i feel as if u either get the vibe or u don‘t.. at first i thought it was like a 3/5, not a very lively description of feelings, the female character lacks character etc.. but after some thought and an interpretation of why that might have been a conscious stylistic choice i see it from a different perspective.. liked the end, recommend as a quick read if you‘re into rather dry and grey but easy and „flowy“ literature where you can interpret a bit..

A tight little story about hopelessness. The Police Judiciare figures incidentally, and there are Lucas and the Cafe Dauphin. No Maigret though. This book was published, with another story, as Escape in Vain (1944).
