Favorite Quotes:

My God, how is it fair that he got hotter? I’ve always kind of hoped that he was one of those gorgeous teenagers that peaked early and was now obese and ugly, possibly bald. But this level of good looking, well it’s just not fair at all.

Friends are supposed to be there for you when you do stupid stuff. Not to just judge you and say I told you so. I have my mother for that.

Molly is so cute and loveable that it’s like sunbeams actually shine from her eyes. No one ever meets her and doesn’t like her. Although they always seem to be shocked when they find out she’s a lesbian. I think they expect all lesbians to be thick-necked girls in Doctor Martins with a tattoo on their neck. Idiots.

I attempt a sashay, but for all I know I could look constipated. I don’t do sexy well.

I can feel myself blushing more, which isn’t helping. I must be the colour of a beetroot right now. Sexy.

My Review:

Excess Baggage is a delightfully naughty and amusing tale of single women letting their hair down and behaving like teens while on a much-needed vacation. The writing is laced with irreverent humor, salacious sensual scenes, and ironic wit while featuring Erica - a clumsy, immature, and awkward woman runs into her first love, Jack, whom she had never gotten over from a summer vacation at the tender age fifteen. Jack and Erica were both idiots, but despite their harsh ending fifteen years ago, they had each continued to regret and fantasize about, “the one that got away.” They run into each other by chance while vacationing at a resort with friends and were immediately besotted and occasionally obnoxious. Their antics and status ran hot and cold while becoming reacquainted over a weeks time while far from home and the stressors of their daily lives. Erica was a trouble magnet and a Calamity Jane type who fell into embarrassing predicaments several times a day.

Excess Baggage was a nice quick read.

I've appreciated the sunny lively atmosphere and the motley group of characters that make this story funny, intriguing and enjoyable.

Erica and Jack didn't have a good record for their past encounters but their attraction is still over the top.I was so curious to know if their future will be better now after 15 years I've read this story in a day.

I’m a sucker for a second chance love story. I’m sure we’ve all played the ‘What If?’ game at some point in our lives. Or maybe, it’s just *coughs* women of a certain age (myself included) that do that sort of thing *snorts*

Arriving on Luna Island with her friends for a much needed holiday, Erica Bennett can’t believe it when the boy from her first holiday romance, all those years ago, walks into the same hotel. Only that boy, Jack Lawson, is very much now a M-A-N *winks*

One thing’s for sure, their attraction to one another hasn’t lessened any. No Siree Bob! It has intensified ten-fold with the sexual tension leaping from the pages. Psst, I will say one thing – wait till you get to the shower scene. Holy smokes!

With well-meaning and meddling friends on both sides, plus Erica and Jack’s own ‘baggage’ – this was one hoot of a tale! Two things; the truth will out, and you know what they say about assuming anything, don’t you? *smirks*

I felt a natural affinity with Erica and the series of hilarious calamities that befall her:

“What a magical day. Well, apart from the flashing of one’s tits.”

As I’ve come to expect from this author’s writing, I cried (and had to cross my legs to prevent any accidents) with laughter, and sighed like a sap. I also wanted to slap some sense into the characters as well, but, come on, you expect that from me now – right?

A huge 5 stars from me 😊

Excess Baggage was my first Laura Barnard read, and I can guarantee it will not be my last. I went into this book expecting to read a couple of chapters on the way to work, only to find myself sneaking a read at every possible moment. It was all kind of addictive, taking me on a wild ride, and it has left me with the most intense desire to pick up Laura Barnard’s other books.

Excess Baggage is a beautiful second chance romance with the perfect mix of humour and emotion. Telling the story of reconnecting with a first love, this story offers up so much. From the very first page you’re pulled into the story, the grip it has on you growing tighter and tighter with each page you read. One moment you’ll be cooing at how adorable the story is, only to be snorting with laughter in the next moment. It truly is a wonderful blend of all the necessary aspects to make an addictive romance read.

Whilst I loved so many things about this story, I think my favourite aspect was the humour. I was chuckling aloud at so many of the scenes. One chapter in particular had me clutching my stomach for fear I would do myself serious damage with all the laughter bubbling from me. What I especially loved is that it wasn’t too over the top. Although there was more than enough to leave you giggling throughout, there were plenty of moments where the story had a more serious note to it. Ensuring fans are chuckling whilst maintaining a serious story is vital, and this one certainly delivers on that front.

It also delivers in giving you characters you’ll fall in love with. I fell madly in love with our main characters from the very start of the story – in fact, I loved the entire cast – and I couldn’t help but hope they would get their happily ever after. The way in which the details of the past slowly come to light and mix with the events of the present allowed my emotions to slowly alter in regards to characters, and for me to feel so many different things towards each of the characters in such a short space of time was brilliant. They really do come alive, jumping off the page.

Mix in the humour and the amazing cast with the gripping storyline, and you have the recipe for a mind-blowing read. The biggest disappointment for me is that the book wasn’t longer – there was plenty of drama, we had plenty of hot scenes, and we experience so much – yet I would have liked to spend even more time following the wonderful cast of characters we were introduced to, as I wanted to spend even longer holidaying with them. This simply demonstrates how deeply I came to love the story – only those that truly grip you leave you wanting to spend more time with the characters.

I would also like to point out that there’s the possibility of getting the story of two of the other characters we are introduced to in this book. I say yes, a thousand times yes. In fact, I say yes to hearing the story of all of the characters. The cast was wonderful and I came to enjoy them all, and getting to read the love stories for all of the characters is certainly something I would love to do.

Honestly, this story was absolutely adorable. I was pulled under the spell from start to end, and I cannot wait to read more of Laura Barnard’s work.

An enjoyable, fun second chance romance.

I listened to this in audio. Brilliantly narrated.

I loved the whole girls on holiday, getting away, letting their hair down kind of story with girly times, laughter, humour, flirting, sassy & witty British character's, which gave it a Bridget Jones kind of feel. Throw in a group of boys and Erica meeting her first love from a holiday way back when she was a teenager at just fifteen and this girly holiday turns into a sexy second chance romance.
Fun read with plenty of giggles.
Told in first person dual pov. leads to a hea with a surprise I didn't see coming so I also felt it was a little bit of a rushed ending but overall I liked it.

The just released Excess Baggage by Laura Barnard is a breezy, young romance. Nevertheless, it can be enjoyed by everyone, regardless of age

Erica is enjoying her vacation with friends when she bumps into Jack, her first love. Only now, Jack seems absolutely irresistible and Erica finds herself completely flustered. Similar feelings haunt Jack and he can't seem to keep himself distanced from Erica for long. But with Karl (Erica's current boyfriend) and Amber (who is constantly checking on Jack) in the picture, things aren't going too well for the duo. Not to mention their own history when they were together 15 years ago. Will the planets finally align for the both of them?

The story carries a casual and modern tone mainly due to its language. The narrative is in the first person that toggles from one character to the next. The writing is relaxed and expresses how much the author enjoys writing romances. The expressions, emotions and love scenes are aesthetically done. It is a quick and light read. It isn't a very complex love story which is great if you just want to chill with a book.

Now to the characters. Erica and Jack, the main characters, are painted as the hopelessly-in-love couple. I especially liked the protectiveness that Jack shows towards Erica, so romantic! Erica's reservations and submissions are excellently portrayed and in my opinion, her character is a winner, hands down! There are the friends too, the ever protective Evelyn to the carefree Brooke and the others who add substance to the cozy and warm atmosphere created by the author.

Overall, a short, quick and cozy read to enjoy during travels or a weekend, Excess Baggage is a recommended read to all romance lovers. Read it and grow younger!

I got an ARC of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review :) and boy do I have some very mixed feelings about this one... *sighs* I was going back and forth after finishing this story about how I should rate it and ultimately I landed on 3 stars... because there were things I absolutely loved about it, but also quite a few that I found problematic... as always, I will try my best to explain all my thoughts and feelings to you guys :) hopefully it will help you make your own decision about reading this book, because I am definitely not saying you shouldn't give it a try... I'm sure a lot of you will absolutely love it... but I am getting a bit ahead of myself :) first let me tell you a bit about our main couple...

Since it's a book that I have very mixed feelings about, I will keep my review on a bit of a shorter side, because I don't like to dwell on negative things... especially since usually those thigns are connected to my very own personal preferences as a reader, and just because I didn't enjoy certain aspects of this book, it doesn't mean you won't :) so about our main couple... yeah... I didn't like them very much... #SorryNotSorry, it's just my opinion... I mean, Jack was sort of ok, I guess... but it was definitely Erica that got on my nerve... *sighs* I just couldn't connect with her... like at all... and as someone who is exactly her age at this moment, I have to say... she really frustrated me... she was childish and annoying and I just couldn't understand her and her actions... don't get me wrong, I KNOW how it feels to want to play the what-if game, but it's never a good idea... and honestly, at this point... we know better... we might pretend we don't, explaining certain behaviour so the decisions we make will seem more acceptable, but deep inside we know we're making mistakes... and Erica was making mistake after mistake... at least in my opinion... their relationship was... if you actually can call it like that... it was a bit too much too fast for me... I prefer when the road to the actual relationship is a bit longer... :) but hey, like I mentioned before, it's my personal preferences talking :)

Overall I think that because I had such troubles with the heroine, it really influenced my reading experience... she was really obnoxious... I mean, the whole thing how she resolved the situation with her boyfriend was... ugh... BUT at the same time, I'm sure that some of you won't feel that way... you will find her flawed and relatable, and that's awesome for you :) my favourite character was actually Evelyn... she was one of Erica's friend... the one being called too serious and a buzzkill more than once, but... I so disagree with those opinions :) I mean, every time she challenged Erica or said some things I was like *YES!!! please, someone... anyone... listen to the ONLY voice of reason in your group* :) since it's not a very long story, everything felt a bit rushed... I would love to read more and get to know more about these characters... maybe seeing them together more as teenagers, or acting more like adults now would help me connect to them better :) BUT do not get me wrong, I feel like the writing style was funny and entertaining, and even though this was my very first book by this author, and it turned out it was not my cup of tea, I am definitely planning on reading something else from her :) fingers crossed that another story will be closer to my heart ;)

Since Excess Baggage was my first Laura Barnard book, I didn't know what to expect, but my initial concerns were unfounded: Excess Baggage was a fun and quick summer read. It is perfect for a day at the beach or the pool.

Excess Baggage is a relatively short and therefore really fast paced story, which I am not used to normally. The shortness of the novel was at the expense of the characters, unfortunately. The characters were nice and loving but I was missing depth. It was also tricky to keep up with the "who is who" of the secondary characters, since Barnard added quite a bunch to the novel.
The story was also a little jumpy and confusing at times, e. g. there was one scene in which the characters were in spot A and in the next sentence they were in spot B all of a sudden without as so much as a description of how they got there.

The ending of the book felt too rushed, as if Barnard had to bring the story to an end really quick. There was also a big revelation in the last chapter which shouldn't have been in this part of the story in my opinion. It would've been a nice plot twist at about 70% and would've added a little more drama to the story. But Erica was presented with facts that she had to deal with and accept right this second - and she did which was weird for me. This revelation definitely would've given me second thoughts concerning my just rekindled relationship. I'm pretty sure she agreed because she was too overwhelmed with the situation and too happy to really care, but she didn't really think about the "after".

If you need a fun and light read to keep you company on this year's summer vacation, grab Excess Baggage and enjoy your day at the beach.

I really wish goodreads would allow half stars but alas they don't so I will start off by saying my score is 3.5 stars.

This story was really well written with a very promising story line. The premise of young teenage love finding each other 15 years later would be a wonderful second chance story. Even with this particular story and the things that they did, their "adventures", and maybe some portions of their friend's involvement and interactions would work. However, it's the characters that put me off. At first it was fine, everything was good and they find each other at the same hotel, yet this could work. But once I found out that this is 15 years later and these people are in their early thirties, I had a very hard time with this book.

The lead characters Erica and Jack's characters actually worked my nerves with their childishness and apparent immaturity. The thing is, I really liked the characters apart from each other and thought that they were well written and well defined, until they opened their mouths and became 30 year old teenagers! And their friends would be the perfect mix of friends, if they too would have acted their age. And Evelyn...I could not stand that woman! She was like the best friend from hell! And I am laughing about this one. I get why she was upset about Erica and Jack, but man, she was like a pit bull with a bone and just would not let it go!

Granted it was a quick read, and there were so many things that were just laugh out loud funny, it would have been better if these characters were much younger, like early to mid twenties. Of course, this is just my opinion. I am sure that there are many, many people would will love it just the way it is.

The Blurb :
Stuck in a dead-end relationship, Erica Bennett finds herself daydreaming of her first holiday romance. She was fifteen, it was exciting, new and full of possibilities…and Jack Lawson was hot as hell. That kind of thing leaves a mark.
So when her friends suggest a girls holiday to Luna Island, it’s exactly what she needs to take her mind off things. What she doesn’t expect is to spot Jack – a much older, hotter version of him – across the hotel lobby.
Their attraction is still there and it isn’t long before sparks fly, but fifteen years is a long time. They aren’t the same people they were back then and besides, it’s only a week, right?
Is it a second chance at something real or will their excess baggage ruin their shot at love after they leave Luna Island?

My Thoughts :
I really enjoy books by Laura Barnard amd this was great aswell. Everyone loves an uplifting feel good read and this is perfect for the beach or a really sunny day. I love that Erica and Jack have that instant connection again after 15 years. In parts we were taken back to when they first met and how their relationship came about. It was also told from both of their points of view. Although I didnt care for some of the charactors, Laura made it work and it ties together nicely.
I do feel the ending was a bit rushed but maybe we will see a follow up as id love to revist Erica and Jack. Even get to know Brooke and Tom a little better.
There are a lot of funny and laugh out loud moments in this story and one that will keep you entertained until the end.

I love all of Laura Barnard’s books, so when I got the opportunity to read ‘Excess Baggage’ I snapped it up.

The story is about Erica a girl who escapes on a girls holiday, never expecting to run into her ex ‘the one that got away’.

Jack is a man now, but Erica still can’t forget the painful break up, or the way in which he so brutally dropped her, but she also cannot stop her heart from fluttering whenever he is nearby, or the way in which she is attracted to him.

Jack has always had a soft spot for Erica, she is cute, fun and trouble always seems to find her. When he is reunited with her, he swears nothing can happen beyond their trip, but that it doesn’t mean they can’t have some fun.

But what happens when both Erica and Jack have secrets? And will it all end in heartache for a second time?

This book was fun, flirty and overall funny. Erica is a relatable character, and I love her friend Brooke and the overprotective Evelyn. What makes the book appealing is it could literally be anyone’s love story, and all the mishaps and situations that Erica gets herself into, are relatable, and you can’t help but cringe for her.

A fun easy read that kept me entertained throughout.
The perfect read for all romantic comedy lovers, and those wanting to try a new author.

First of all, I’d like to mention how much I LOVE the cover for Excess Baggage! *chef’s kiss* Absolute perfection!

This was my first read by Laura Barnard and I guarantee it will not be my last! Her writing is descriptive, flows smoothly, and has just the right amount of comedy.

Excess Baggage is the perfect summer second-chance romcom you didn’t know you needed. It’s so light and refreshing and had me laughing several times throughout the story.

Let me tell you a little bit about the story:

Erica and her girlfriends go on a week long summer vacation to Luna Island for a little escape.

What Erica wasn’t expecting was to run into her childhood love, Jack.

Jack & Erica met 15 years ago while both of their families were on vacation. They fell in love, but Jack broke her heart.

Now 15 years later, on a romantic island, sparks ignite again.

——————————————————————————

Erica’s character is extremely clumsy and hilarious. She makes the whole book for me. I can’t count how many times my jaw dropped by the comical things that happen to this girl. She just had me laughing out loud several times throughout the book.

The exfoliating/shower scene…🔥🔥🔥

If you like a good second chance romance, you should definitely check this out!

4 Star review of Excess Baggage (Babes of Brighton #1) by Laura Barnard
Audio Review:
This is a second chance at love story and although I have read several books form Laura Barnard, the narrator Penny Scott-Andrews is new to me.
This is not a particularly long book to listen to and although I enjoyed the story line I could not get into the narrator at all.
A girls trip away leads Erica Bennett to a blast from the past, when she comes face to face with her first love Jack Lawson, the man who broke her heart. However, the attraction is still there and now all that needs to be considered is whether they should act on it since nothing has really changed from when they were 15.
The chemistry between Erica and Jack is intense and thanks to their interfering friends life becomes complicated. I really enjoyed the camaraderie with the secondary characters who were entertaining.
Can Erica and Jack, get through the emotional baggage from their past and in doing so create a future or should they quit while they are ahead?

I’m not really into romance and chic lit but I love a good audio and I do like something lighter in between the heavier stuff I tend to listen to - this was an entertaining, shortish audio that I went quickly through whilst walking to the supermarket and prepping food - the characters behave a little immature for my personal taste, Jack’s ‘big secret’ really isn’t something anyone needs to keep secret, he also thinks with his genitalia an awful lot and Erica certainly hasn’t moved on much from her fifteen year old self, the white bikini incident seems pretty daft - girl, what??? And whose girlfriends wouldn’t immediately spot that?
But then, if you pick this up you don’t expect a nuanced character study or realistic portrayal of adult relationships.
It was fun and a little naughty and the narrator did a pretty good job - I have the other two in the series lined up and I’m sure they will make just as good a light-hearted relief as this one.

AUDIOBOOK REVIEW

Ok I loved this audio is so sweet and frustrating and reminded me of summer holiday romances and that feeling that the men you meet are the sun, moon and stars but in this case our heroine in this story has never got over her first summer fling and when a chance encounter brings them back together it sets off a chain of misunderstandings and frustrations to a love that never runs smooth. I loved it but note to self don’t listen to this and let your mum in the room as it is quite saucy and my mum is still recovering lol.

This author has once again produced something which had me in tears through laughing on more than one occasion while reading this. She has the ability to write scenes where I can see it happening in my mind as I read the words on the page, and that makes me enjoy it even more.

This is a lovely second chance at romance story with so much humour throughout. Fans of the author will love this, as will those who enjoy an easy read with plenty of laughs.

I just really love books where 90% of the Spanish men are described as “overweight” or “tubby”, or where there’s a white male saviour moment when the woman gets literally assaulted, OR when there’s casual slut shaming

And that’s not even the half of it! :)

Erica is going on a girls holiday to refresh herself from the pressures of home life. But the last person she expected to see, thousands of miles from home was her childhood sweetheart and first love Jack.

This hilarious read which took less than two hours to read, was a funny and light hearted and perfect summer read for 2017. I think I had in my head how the story would go, but the author put so many extras that have your sides hurting with laughter, you can't help but fall in love with all the characters.

A dual perspective story that flowed really well and never had a dull moment. An absolute must read this summer!

I got this one because it was free on kindle and the cover was cute. I don't know if I'm being too sensitive or what but I'm getting annoyed over some fatphobic stuff in here. The mc never actually says any of this stuff but it still didn't sit right with me. When she describes a certain character, she uses stuff like: "he might have put on weight but he’s still the loveliest guy in the world." like, uhmm. And a little bit after that she says:"‘Evelyn’s at the bar chatting up the barman.’ Last time I looked at the barman he was an overweight local man. I look over and to my relief some hottie has come on shift. Thank the Lord I don’t have to commit her to the nearest mental hospital."

🙄🙄 Again, I don't know if I'm being too sensitive or if it's even my place to talk about this but I was feeling uncomfortable -and btw, I wasn't even feeling the main couple. So dnf-ing this was a win-win.

I give this story 2.75/5 loosely tied bikini tops.

Every time Laura Barnard has a new book coming out or she wants to relaunch one of her books, she always sends me a message through Instagram and asks if I want to be a part of the launch or review the book. I always say yes because her stories are always hilarious and the characters are very real and imperfect. I find some of her characters irritating at first and then you will end up rooting for them. There was one story where I wasn't sure if I liked the main character but I really enjoyed the whole book which actually speaks a lot about the ability of the author to keep her audience. So, I was just thrilled when she asked me again to read and review this book. Excess Baggage was released August 18, 2020.

This book is another one with a very clumsy and imperfect main character in it. Erica is far from being perfect. I think she has the misfortune of always embarrassing herself in front of the guy he likes. The situations she gets herself into are the stuff that would mostly go viral on the internet if they were caught on camera that should never see the light of day. Yes, I feel so sorry for her every time this happens. Her character reminds me of Lindsay Lohan's character in 'Just My Luck. '

This is a second chance romance every one would wish would happen in their life except for the accidents that happen to Erica. She's like an accident magnet which reminds me of one of my bestfriends who happen to fall most of the time. At least, my friend only got scratches and a little blood here and there. Unlike Erica whose minor accidents are pictures you can't un-see.

This story had me thinking if I like Erica's character at all. I am not sure but I sure do wish she'd end up with Jack. I think Erica's character wasn't so striking except for holding her head high every after embarrassing situation she's into. But aside from that, I don't find a lot of other things endearing in her character. This story is at times hilarious but it came to a point where it felt predictable, especially where Erica is involved. I would most likely could tell when something embarrassing would happen to her again.

I give this story 2.75/5 loosely tied bikini tops. Though the story is very easy to read and you would want to finish it in one reading, I felt it to be so predictable. Of all the stories of Barnard that I've read, this is probably the less engaging of all. I wasn't so taken with the story. There were very few points of interest that would make you wonder what's going on like what Jack's hiding. But other than that, you pretty much would know how the story would end or when Erica would humiliate herself again. So, this was okay but I've read her other stories and they were more entertaining and delightful than this one. I would have given this a lower rating but I remember there were some parts, though very few, that had me curious. Jack's character is also a saving grace for this story. He's everything you would want in a guy and he's very protective and patient with Erica. I am glad that his feelings for Erica is as sure as the next moment Erica will embarrass herself. Realizing this was the first book in the series, and I've read book three, is I guess a good thing. Bagging Alice, book three, is way more hilarious and more fun to read. I like the cover of this book though.

All I know is that the butterflies that have been lying dormant in my stomach have come back to life, flying around screaming 'He's here! He's here!'

Fifteen years ago, Erica Bennett and Jack Lawson met on holiday whilst with their families. It soon became apparent that their caravans were next door to each other. Their families became friends and the two had a bit of a teenage romance. Erica was fifteen years old and Jack was sixteen. The holiday ended and with all holiday romances there is a promise to keep in touch. They did for a little while and it would seem they grew up and lost touch.

Erica is in what she felt was a dead-end relationship. Possibly of convenience as her beau gives her a lot of support when Erica has been helping her mother through her breast cancer. Erica’s friends suggest a week long deserved break to Luna Island and off they go. What she doesn’t bank on is an older more handsome version of the guy she fell for, none other than Jack across the hotel lobby. To say she is shocked is an understatement. The attraction is still as strong as ever but they are much older and possibly wiser and a lot of things have changed through their adult lives not forgetting Jack broke Erica’s heart all those years ago. They have a week to find out exactly if it’s just a fleeting romance or if they are each other’s one that got away.

“You always knew how to make an entrance.”

“Oh my God, I can’t believe I did that!”

The side characters are an interesting bunch and as the story unfolds we are sent on a journey which makes you feel like you’re there or at least wish you were there. This story has everything from sadness, to hilarity mixed with steamy scenes. I could not stop laughing at some of the calamitous scenes we were subjected to by Erica. The poor woman did get herself into some compromising situations. The waterpark had me roaring. There was the side to this read that had you feeling it was impossible for Erica and Jack to have anything more than a holiday romance, due to them living in two different cities. Evelyn was the serious one out of the bunch of friends and Brooke was so funny and flirty.

This read is a light-hearted easy entertaining from start to finish. The story had fluidity but also thrills and surprises on the way. Certain situations I never saw coming and made me feel like it wasn’t all a simple brief romance because as the title does suggest there was excess baggage!

“We both know after this week we have to go back to our own lives and that means living in different postcodes. It would never work.”

I will say at times I found they acted like teenagers but then having read the whole book, and on reflection, I suppose when you’re with a group, holidaying with copious amounts of alcohol without everyday stresses and strains it’s to be expected to let loose especially mixed with memories that brought out that side, it didn’t make the story any less enjoyable. It was great when the story flitted back to how they met all those years ago. It looks like we are going to get a story of a couple of the side characters which I look forward to. The author has written a beautiful story and I recommend everyone puts this on their holiday reading list.

I've said too many times how much I love finding new authors to read. Also I've said how much I love romance books and comedies. Well, Excess Baggage combine all of that: It's a romantic comedy written by a new author (for me).

With a fresh and light first person narration, Laura Barnard tell the Erica's story. She's a girl trapped in a relationship where she's no longer happy. This lover boy was her rock, her partner, her friend... but he's not rocking her world. When her mom is about to start her last round of chemo, Erica and her girl friends take a holiday in an island, and for the first time in a long time she's thinking about let loose a little.

But Erica is one of the most unlucky characters that I've ever read about, because when she's supposed to be having fun and forgetting, she met with a ghost from her past: Jack. An older and sexier version of her teenage first love.

Erica is a funny character. She's lovely and caring, smart and beautiful, but she's always in the most ridiculous situations. It's hilarious!

Note-to-self: Never buy swimsuits in facebook's boutiques.

Jack, in the other hand, is taking a holiday with his pals. And when he saw Erica, the one who got away, he knows he's in troubles. He can't offer her a future, he only can give her those holidays. But once they let go and give themselves to love, all the time in the world seems to be not enough. They will want more.

I loved this book. It was lots and lots of fun. I hadn't expectations about the story, but I was pleased and suprised with the development. The funny situations, the dialogues, the interactions between Erica and her friends (also between Jack and his friends, and between Jack's friends and Erica's friends...) and how the love story evolved was simply great. Hope this isn't the last time Laura Barnard write about this particular gang.

Love isn't always enough to keep to persons together. And Jack is hiding something. Will Erica accept what Jack has to offer? Even with his Excess Baggage? You need to read this book to find out (you will not regret it).

Excess Baggage is a standalone romantic comedy, unrelated to any previous work by this author.

Erica is on a girl’s holiday to Luna Island. It’s a well needed break following her mum’s current battle with cancer and a relationship with Karl that isn’t floating her boat anymore. So imagine her shock when she comes face to face with the boy that broke her heart following a holiday romance at the tender age of 15. Jack was her first love, but do feelings still remain? She has a week to find out.

Every girl will be able to relate to this book. Quintessential British humour, I felt like I was on a girls holiday with my own chicks. With plenty of laughs and a few steamy moments, this was one of those quick, easy reads that are sometimes just what we need. No heavy, complex storylines, just a book that will put a smile on your face as you reminisce on your own first love or holiday fling, whilst laughing out loud at the cringe worthy moments that poor Erica finds herself in.

Laura Barnard is a brand new author for me and I loved how British her writing style was. I loved hearing about Peterborough, Burnham-on Sea and Brighton. I’ve been to these places so could imagine myself there. The majority of books I read are U.S based, so to read my language, slang and about places I have visited, well it was a refreshing change that I just really enjoyed.

So if you are looking for a quick, light-hearted, fun and flirty summer read then look no further. Get your glass of Sangria and sun-lounger ready and settle down with this book, you won’t regret it. I just hope we get more. Brooke and Tom having left me wanting more.

I always enjoy Laura Barnard's books and with that in mind I jumped at the chance to read Excess Baggage. So what did I think...

A fun and entertaining story that held my interest completely with the antics of this group of friends. Erica can't believe her eyes when she ends up face to face with her first romance. You can definitely feel the connection that they share but will they ever get their timing right and end up with a happy ever after?

I really enjoyed the fact that you get to see the story from both Erica and Jack's point of view. It kept the story interesting as you got to see things from both sides. There are lots of funny moments mainly involving Erica in embarrassing situations. I enjoyed how snippets from the past are revealed and we get to see what happened between Erica and Jack. There are some pretty sizzling moments and the chemistry that they share is undeniable.

I loved this group of friends, all with different personalities but somehow ending up staying friends. I have to say out of the group my favourite was Brooke as she is just great. She is self assured but such a good friend with no judgements levelled at Erica. There is swearing in this book and even though this didn't bother me I know people can be put off by it so I thought I would just mention it. The story is down to earth with plenty of laughs so if you are in need of cheering up this book would be perfect! I actually finished Excess Baggage in one evening as I had to find out how it would all end.

A fun story with a hot and steamy romance!

Thank you to Laura Barnard for my copy. This is my honest and unbiased opinion.

Erica and Jack met as teenagers and had a summer romance that endured for a little after summer was over, but not long enough. Fast forward some 12 years and Erica is with her girlfriends on a holiday trip at an island resort when she encounters her former flame across the hotel lobby. What’s a girl to do?
When their groups meld together, Erica and Jack will be constantly around each other. With the attraction still there and strong as ever, they’ll have to decide whether or not they can risk a second summer fling.
This was my first read by this author and, for the second time this week, I have been greatly impressed. Excess Baggage was a page turner for me and I couldn’t put it down until I read the very last line. The book flowed effortlessly and I enjoyed both the storyline and the characters. Also, their visit to the local pharmacy almost made me pee myself I laughed so hard.
Jack and Erica have each their own baggage plus the fact that they still live in different cities. They are reminded every step of the way the reason they didn’t work out the first time around and they are conflicted about their feelings. I found myself upset about the amount of mixed signals Jack gives her, but it didn’t stop me from liking him. And the secondary characters do not disappoint at all, especially her friends Brooke and Evelyn. What a pair!
Excess Baggage is a second chance romance, filled with unexpected laughter and I recommend it to anyone looking for a quick romantic read with the perfect ending.

Looking for a fun and crazy summer read? Probably something to peruse while vacationing with friends in the beach.. The story was all kinds of crazy and drama and romance, just right for a particularly hot and sunny day.

This is a second chance romance for Jack and Erica, who had met, had fun and had an affair when they were at the young age of fifteen. The perfect puppy love if you’d ask me. Now, fifteen years later, they saw each other again on a holiday in Luna Island, and tried to rekindled their past. But it seemed that they both had excess baggage that they couldn’t just leave behind.

The flow of the story was fine – quite fast and furious and fun. My main concern however, were the main characters. They were both already in their 30s when they met again, but somehow, their actions didn’t even change from when they got separated a lifetime ago. It felt like they just missed each other for a week, and their tryst began again. They behaved like teenagers, they acted like they were still virgins doing it for the first time, they conducted themselves like high-schoolers fidgeting and jumping to conclusions whenever a simple miscommunication arose. I didn’t really connect with Jack and Erica, but Brooke and Tom and Molly – well they were quite the raucous bunch but they proved to be intriguing as well.

This is my first book by Laura Barnard but will not be the last. I believe there’s promise in her stories and I would still love to dive into her other books soon.

This was my second read from Laura so I had a notion of the kind of humour I could expect from this book.

Going into the story we meet Erica who has just arrived on Luna Island for a girly holiday. Across the hotel lobby she spots Jack, an ex boyfriend from 15 years ago when they were teens. Also on holiday with his friends! What a coincidence... What could go wrong?

I could tell from the off that they still had feelings for each other - whether it was love, I wasn't sure after the way their relationship ended. But they were older now, and knew their minds more than when they were teenagers.

Erica is one of those clumsy characters, where you are constantly in fits of giggles at her mishaps, but it's just the kind of thing that you can't help but laugh at as you can imagine it happening it to you, or 'that' friend in real life!

Jack. I did like him but he seemed to push Erica away quite a bit, then didn't like it when she did the same to him. Though a lot of the time it was crossed wires and I was just shouting at them and wanted to bang their heads together!

There were quite a few other characters in the book and I did keep getting them confused, but I absolutely loved carefree Brooke!

As expected, they did get it on and boy was that first time HOT! The sexual tension was off the scale! They did try and keep it a secret due to Erica's best friend, Evelyn (I didn't really like her), and I did think at points they were a little immature for their age now, in they way they acted and things they said.

By the time the holiday was over and their 'fling' was over, I was really sad as I could tell by now it was love. I was hoping for a happy ending. You will have to read to find out if there was! ;)

An ideal beach read for the summer!
