This was a really pithy and enjoyable 176 page pep talk mixed with autobiography and a bit of bragging, served with some straight forward guidelines on self improvement. Maxwell's mission isn't just to help you become a leader -- but to create a better world full of leaders: people who seek to understand and serve others, unselfishly, as a way of improving conditions everywhere for everyone.

He's great on lists and acronyms (like "R-E-A-L, the four things every person needs to be successful: relationships, equipping, attitude, and leadership."). Maxwell's voice/tone is very conversational, it makes it easy to read this as though you are hearing a seminar or presentation:

Maxwell's dream is to "create a world where people think of others before themselves, where adding value to others is a priority, where financial gain is secondary to future potential, and where your self-worth is strengthened by acts of significance every day."

Maxwell speaks of finding a life of significance and pursuing your passion - nobody of significance was ever indifferent. Significance comes from adding value to others and putting their interests first. Use your experiences and skills to help improve the lives of others.

"When you take responsibility for your story and intentionally live a life of significance, you will empower yourself, and you will grow your leadership abilities.
• You will reaffirm your values.
• You will find your voice.
• You will develop your character.
• You will experience inner fulfillment."

“Do you really want to switch careers, or do you want to switch to a life that matters?” The problem usually isn’t the job or career."

"Significance comes from using what you have to benefit others."

Maxwell offers these simple guidelines for adding value to others:

1. I Must First Value Myself "People who help others tend to feel good about the people they help and to feel good about themselves."
2. I Must Value Others
3. I Must Value What Others Have Done for Me
4. I Must Know and Relate to What Others Value: be willing to talk about your failures, and use these practices to better connect with others:

• Availability—I will choose to spend time with others.
• Listening—I will listen my way to common ground.
• Questions—I will be interested enough in others to ask questions.
• Thoughtfulness—I will think of others and how to connect with them.
• Openness—I will let people into my life.
• Likability—I will care about people.
• Humility—I will think of myself less so I can think of others more.

5. I Must Make Myself More Valuable

You need to develop yourself to make yourself more useful to others, to grow and to be able to offer value to others and to be a leader. Maxwell asks, "What experiences have you had that have uniquely equipped you to add value to others?" "What is inside you that can help you make others better? What skills do you possess? What talents have been given to you? What personality traits do you have that can be used to add value to others?"

"Place Other People’s Interests at the Top of Your List of Priorities" -- You also have to put other people first -- think about those who bring out the best in you. Ask to hear people's stories, "It’s hard to remain self-centered when your focus is on others. Hearing people’s stories is a great way to get outside of yourself."

The author emphasizes the need to be intentional in adding value to people's lives -- look for opportunities and act on them. He provides a model for ways to share your knowledge and expertise:

Model—I do it.
Mentor—I do it and you watch.
Monitor—You do it and I watch.
Motivate—You do it.
Multiply—You do it and someone else is with you.

He also talks about finding the right partners for your journey. "Having the right partners will help you gain momentum and build your dream into something bigger." These will be people who think of others first, think bigger than themselves, are contagious in their passion, have complementary gifts to your own, they connect and provide support. Look for "Can-do" activists who can expand influence, building "ladders" (or bridges) and who make a difference.

"Teaming up with other people who want to make a difference is the multiplying factor that makes it possible for an individual to change a family, a community, a city, a country—the world."

Refine and be able to clearly articulate your dream, and then share your dream with others and see how they respond; be sure to connect with people who want to work as hard as you -- not just "success groupies" or people who want to hang out. Like seeks like - "like-minded people will come into your life when you have it in your heart to do something meaningful."

"Great vision is a separator: People who migrated toward the vision wanted significance."

Maxwell doesn't cover a lot of new territory -- he warns that fear is the reason most people give up and indifference is the reason they don't start, describing the reluctance to be one's brother's keeper as a strategy/excuse of selfishness. This book echoes much of what I have read in his other book. It's definitely the best of the known territory and it's always good to have a refresher. Inspiring and enjoyable to read.

Quotes from Maxwell's book:

"One person is a start. One person can act and make a change by helping another. One person can inspire a second person to be intentional, and another. This is where leadership begins."

"To have a life that matters, you just have to start."
"Stop looking—start living!"

"If you take action, it will change your life."

“One of the best places to start to turn your life around is by doing whatever appears on your mental, ‘I should’ list.”

"In life, it is not what we get that makes us valuable. It is what we become in the process that brings value to our lives."

“When life is sweet, say thank you and celebrate. When life is bitter, say thank you and grow.”

Albert Einstein “The world is a dangerous place, not because of those who do evil, but because of those who look on and do nothing.”

Malcolm Forbes said, “People who matter most are aware that everyone else does too.”

The Power of Your Leadership (Making a Difference with Others) by John C. Maxwell

Actual Rate: 9/10
Favorite Line: "I was passionate, and passion is contagious."

Actual Review:
The Power of Your Leadership is an another book of guidance from John Maxwell, published in 2017. This book specifically delineated the configuration, steps, factors and the rudiments of leading with purpose.

This is really quite a book because even though it just a small book doubtlessly best for a quick reading. It is really packed with gargantuan empirical wisdom which is shared through language beautifully. I love how he tackled on the privilege of a young girl, and she used that privilege for the betterment of the world. Still, some portions of the book are seemed self-centered reflections but some parts are also self-evaluating. Somehow, I find myself on rhytmic stop, trying to discern bits of this book. That's when I believed that I really had a good time reading this book. But as long as the page is turning, I literally yawn at some pages by the middle to last sector of the book because it did really come to me as academic haha. Like the texbook's lines you need to memorize for your exam. Nevertheless, I still got the learnings and thanks to Mr. Maxwell's choice of words and scenarios that are inserted in this book because, for the all-encompassing effect on the book, I really find this inspiring.

"The Power of Your Leadership" by John C. Maxwell is a great little book full of great truths on leadership to take on the go with you! We all want to lead people well and lead them in a direction that brings them to the next level. No leader wants to admit defeat, nor lead their team astray. However, a leader isn't just based on positioning. A leader can be someone who has no high position anywhere, but simply leads in their current position. Anyone can make a different right where they are planted. If you are passionate about what you are doing, others will see that spark and want to do it too! Give your life more meaning and find passion in all that you are doing. Bring people around you who can challenge you, but also help you grow in your leadership and you will see how much your leadership style will be impacted positively. I give this nugget of wisdom 5/5 stars.

Sharing his path from being a young, small-town pastor to the global leadership position that he has now, John Maxwell asks hard questions about what it means and what it takes to be a true leader. He shows how we can make a difference by pursuing our passion and being intentional in our actions, and then make an even greater impact by teaming up with people who share our values. John Maxwell again delivers a wonderful book on leadership as only he can. Note: NetGalley provided an advanced ebook copy.

Some notes:

I hope you want to lead so that you can make a difference in the world with other people. I say that because the real power of leadership comes from what we can do with and for others.
-

Most people want to hear or tell a good story. But they don't realize they can and should be the good story. That requires you to become the leader of your own life.

-

Five Ways to put others first:
1. Develop a greater appreciation for other people
2. Ask to hear other people’s stories
3. Put yourself in other people’s shoes
4. Place other people’s interests at the top of your lists of priorities
5. Make a winning group activity

Instead of making a difference for people would work to make a difference with people. Instead of doing things to emphasize my value, I would focus on making others more valuable.

Five essential values of adding values to others
1.) I must first value myself
Self-image dictates daily behavior. You know you truly value yourself when each day you silently affirm that you are the type of person with whom you would like to spend the rest of your life.

2.) I must value others

3.) I must value what others have done for me

4.) I must know and relate to what others value
Embrace these seven qualities and practices:
• Availability--I will choose to spend time with others.
• Listening- I will listen my way to common ground.
Questions- I will be interested enough in others to
ask questions.
• Thoughtfulness- -I will think of others and how to
connect with them.
• Openness--I will let people into my life.
• Likability--I will care about people.
• Humility--I will think of myself less so I can think
of others more.

5.) I must make myself more valuable
Adding value= you have something of value to give them
Being a leader, you must continually grow and become more valuable.
Grow yourself-> grow others. Learn for yourself-> pass it on

Knowing how you can add value
1) What have I been given?
-what wisdom have you gained? What experiences have you had that uniquely equipped you to add value to others?
2) What do I have to give?
-what skills? What talents? What personality traits?
3) What can I do?
Process:
Model- I do it.
Mentor- I do it and you watch.
Monitor- You do it and I watch.
Motivate- You do it.
Multiply- You do it and someone else is with you.

Title: The Power of Your Leadership
Author: John Maxwell

The book was about: This book was about combining your passion and your leadership in a what that goes beyond just successful numbers or sales. This book goes into detail about how you can make a difference in the lives of the people you lead by finding likeminded people and putting them first.

I loved: I loved a few quotes from the book:

· “Significant leadership is always about others, and serving them intentionally.”

· “… if you want to become a stronger leader- to learn, to grow, to achieve your dreams of significance, and to make a difference – have faith.”

· “We all start out life climbing our own ladders and living for ourselves. Over time, some people begin to shift from climbing to their own success, and they start building ladders for others to climb.”

I enjoyed the entire book, but these few quote really stuck out to me. I marked them in my ebook and have reread each section a few times. These type of quotes sit with you and make you a better leader.

Reading this book made me wonder about: John Maxwell is a wealth of knowledge on the subject of leadership. He related a lot of what he is talking about to his own experiences and his time as a pastor of many different churches. I really enjoyed this book and can see why so many people become “John Maxwell coaches.”

Overall, the book was: I give the book 4.75 stars out of 5! (it could be longer)

I received a review copy from the publisher via NetGalley.

I'm incredibly grateful to have been able to receive this book prior to publication although I've only just read it today. This is another great John Maxwell book that really ties great leadership skills to having something bigger than yourself as your power source. He states, "The most influential leaders are powerful because of their unwavering belief in what they are trying to achieve." Do you want a title, a bigger salary, or do you want to serve? What is your passion? He also emphasizes having a story and being real. Finally, there is a great emphasis on joining and connecting with others to have an impact. "When you are already achieving at a highly effective level, you don't gain a great increase by getting significantly better yourself. You gain it by partnering or connecting with other good people who bring something different to the table. And that makes you better."

TO be very honest, i didnt expect much when i bought this book out of a small corner in a book store.
I was not an avid reader of any books at all lately. Miracoulusly, When i read this book, I could not stop reading. I finished this in 1 day.

The book is easy to understand and give some real life examples in every of its theory. It wake me up in every of its sentences and the writer truly put effort in letting the reader follow what's in his mind and what he wants reader to feel. This book tells you how a person can easily be a leader by having a purpose in their life which became a north star of them while sailing the sea of life. The writer also tells us how to find like minded people to help us getting the goal or the purpose that we wanted.

I cannot recommend this book more. This is really awakening book you SHOULD read in your 20s.

Great book on leadership. Great examples for application. I do wish John Maxwell expounded more on his relationship with G-d through Jesus; explaining how G-d provided him insights into the wisdom that he shares. Mr. Maxwell does explain that he is trying to reach a larger audience. Also with the book only having six (6) chapters and an epilogue, it is understandable that not much was expounded upon. It is straight to the point, which is nice. One thing that is very important is to read the epilogue when you have read all 6 chapters. It really does set into place the whole reason for reading the book in the first place and gets you thinking about your next action.

This book was excellent in helping me to understand how significant my leadership is and can be. Dr. Maxwell ties the significance of our leadership to intentionality. Leaders should be intentional about setting forth a vision and about adding value to those whom they lead. I recommend this book to those seeking to understand why our leadership is important and who would like a framework for developing significance as a leader.

I enjoyed this book and the succinct description of leadership in making a difference in the world. It reminded me of the many principles I have learned from leaders in my life, from the Scout organization using the EDGE technique and the acorn analogy from Woodbadge, and from church service and discipleship. One who follows these principles will find purpose, fulfillment, and joy.

John Maxwell very clearly distinguishes between managers and leaders in this study of putting others first. Leadership requires much more commitment and investment into the lives of those around you. It also requires care and attention. Unlike many things today, it is not a process. It is about relationships.

This was a really quick and easy read for me, about 90 minutes. I think the part that stood out most was that good leaders have strong succession plans. Other than that, I didn't get a lot of new ideas. I felt that this was a good high-level overview of personal leadership and is more of an invitation to start a leadership journey. I love this author and have enjoyed some of his other books more.

Nice and short and to the point refresher on how to lead with purpose. Some great pointers on how to become a leader who serves others... peppered in was also a lot of bragging about his accomplishments but it was not so overpowering as to annoy. It serves to inspire others to lead more selflessly.

The Power of Your Leadership: Making a Difference with Others byJohn C. Maxwell. The purpose of this book is for leaders to realize how important it is to help others and understanding the impact of even just one person.
I found several powerful quotes that made me think. A couple I found impactful were:
‘Significance comes from using what yo have to benefit others.”
“A passive life does not become a meaningful life. You cannot make a difference if you stand on the sidelines.”
He shares three stages: survival, success and significance. We need to experience success before we can move to significance.
Can you change your thinking from what am I going to receive to what am I going to give?
An eye opening chapter for me was when he shared that the Lord’s Prayer isn’t about me; it’s about us.
A wonderful challenge I picked up from the book was to make a list of the people that have added value to my life.
The end of each chapter shares some practical application.
