Marc Silber is an award-winning professional video producer, photographer, and photography educator who has been successfully working in the field for decades. Marc combines his passion for the visual art of photography with his love of life.
He started out learning darkroom skills and the basics of photography at the legendary Peninsula School in Menlo Park, CA, in the ‘60s, and moved on to hone his skills to professional standards at the famed San Francisco Art Institute, one of the oldest and most prestigious schools of higher education in art and photography in the United States.
Marc has been an educator since then as well; he began his teaching career at the age of 19 at the National Outdoor Leadership School, teaching mountaineering.
When teaching a life-or-death subject such as mountaineering, one learns how to make sure the students understand the material; when Marc moved into teaching photography in workshops all over the country, he became renowned as an engaging and helpful speaker and coach, as his greatest joy comes from helping others.
More recently, Marc has embraced the digital age with a highly popular YouTube show called “Advancing Your Photography,” which has won several Telly Awards and other recognition for his work there.
This book is a distillation of all the pro tips and wisdom in the YouTube series, in a format you can take with you and refer to constantly when you are out taking your photographs.
An excellent and practical photography book designed to help you take the pictures you like and want to make most. How to look and compose, understand your camera so it becomes second nature and doesn't get in the way. Fine exercises or practice drills also designed to making taking pictures naturally and improve skills.
I opened this book right to a diagram that showed me something I hadn't understood before. Sweet.
Marc Silber's desire is for his handbook is to help that photographer advance whether beginner, intermediate or advanced.
The color quality of the photos used as examples is quite good which for some reason I expected less in a smaller format book made to be carried with you on your photo expeditions as modest or grand as you chose them to be.
Concise and rich with contents/examples. I enjoyed how through a single book, Marc shared recommendations and bits of advice from award-winning professional photographers of different genres. I have decided to keep this one close and to use it as a quick reference. The 3 most important chapter for me are: Chapter 3 - Get to know your camera as a close friend Chapter 7 - Tips for mastering the genres of photography Chapter 8 - The whole cycle of Photography (especially the part about geometry)
My favorite line: "... anything that helps you to see light and understand it will advance your photography."
Great overview of photography as a whole. Probably geared more toward digital photographers who want to make it a career, but by no means not useful for hobbyists like me. Super good to use as a reference book to find jumping off points to explore more specific areas of photography as an art form, as well as taking photos.
This book was easy to read and understand. Everything was laid out in the perfect order for a beginner like me, and by the time I was done I really felt that I could take amazing photos, and was inspired to do so. It is also a visually beautiful book, which increased the quality of the whole experience.
Advancing Your Photography is a work of art, about art! Silber delivers clear, concise content, for all levels of skill, and accentuates the details that matter most to getting the result you desire. As an amateur myself, I felt more professionally suited to capture a meaningful photograph by applying what I learned.
I didn’t get much for this photography book that I didn’t get from any other photography publication. If it’s your first purchase then yes I say go for it but if you spray have a collection and are looking for something be and exporting, this isn’t the book for you.
Reading the title I assumed it was for readers that had some familiarity with photography and wished to learn advanced techniques. Not so. This is a beginner's introduction to photography no different than dozens of other titles available.
This book was professional and very well written. The author suggests that you read it in sections, taking photos in between chapters as you go. This is good advice and when I started reading the book, I intended to do just that.
But after reading the first chapter I found myself unable to put the book down. The fluidity and simplicity in which major concepts were being conveyed was amazing. I recently completed an extensive College course on Photography and was surprised and actually impressed that this small book would have taught me the majority of what I took home from the College Course!
The author could not have done a better job in summarizing the salient and important points of the subject. In my view, it is a MUST read for anyone new or old in Photography.
It covers the BASICS of this subject which anyone who is a professional understands must be read over and over and known cold. This book provides those basics in full while keeping it to the point and easy. - CS
The perfect introduction to the basics of photography - short and well written with excellent examples to illustrate concepts. Above all, this primer is structured perfectly. Silber breaks down various aspects of the medium into distinct parts that build nicely on each other. My only complaint with "Advance Your Photography" would be the frequency with which Silber pushes his own photographs, brand and hashtag. Aside from this minor grievance, I highly recommend this succinct introduction to the art of photography. After finishing it I felt inspired to take more pictures and to continue learning.
Certainly a few useful nuggets in there, but seems to be rather an old book: should have checked the date! A little Lightroom centric: I’m sure it’s great if you can afford it. We all have our own genres, but a book with "advancing" in the title and no mention of Macro? Mentions his app "Zither" as being in iTunes: this has been replaced by the App Store and his app didn’t seem to have made the journey to my local store. Could just be that the book is a little U.S.-centric. Needs updating, particularly with reference to social media. Not great.
If you want a book to start to learn about photography, this is a must have. Simple, to the point and with a lot of reference this book excel any real expectation to every begginer and give you the tools to improve you photography X10. Go for it, read it and get inspire to be a great photographer.
Advancing your photography guides you through the process from visualisation to completion of photography, whilst covering the technical aspects this book covers the fundamentals of photography that allows you to create images that stand the test of time.
