This tale is a beginning chapter book set in the Caribbean. Deanna and her Aunt Sandy are spending part of their summer vacation at their grandmother's farm in the bush. The girls work in the mornings doing chores like collecting eggs, feeding the pigs and picking peas. While the rest of the day contains free time, there are few modern conveniences like television and radio. Grandma has warned them not to stay out after dark or play with Molly. This young neighbor seems to have a knack for getting into trouble. Of course one day when no one is around, Molly persuades the girls to sneak into Mr. Forhan's yard to pick the mangoes off his trees. What happens when the girls encounter a Lagahoo? What is a Lagahoo, you ask? Read this short chapter book to find out.

This story is under forty pages and contains some unique black and white illustrations. The setting, simple text and unusual story line combine to offer an interesting adventure story for the beginning or reluctant reader. Recommended especially for children in the six to eight age range.

“Don't Go Mango Picking” is a little scary, but lots of fun. Kids will love it. The drawings are unusual, but good to look at, and they add to the fun. The story is about an adventure that a girl had when she visited her grandmother, an adventure she will never forget.

While going to get eggs, she passes the house of a man who grows mango trees. The man is very strange. He never picks the mangos from his trees and never lets others do so. The fruit go to waste. She, her young aunt, and a friend hear that the mango trees’ owner walked to town and decided that since he would not return for a while, they had a chance to climb his trees and gather mangos for themselves.

They entered his property. Two climbed a tree, picked mangos and threw them down to the third. But then, surprisingly, the owner returned, and something very strange happed to him which frightened the three girls, who ran.

Children will enjoy hearing what happened.

A tale from the Caribbean, Don’t Go Mango Picking by Desari-Ann Howard-Gibbs is full of lovely drawings and a touching story. Ms. Howard-Gibbs did the art and story herself and created a peek into island life of old. As children do, her two main characters get into a bit of mischief with a neighbor friend and all three have a lesson to learn. The story and the pictures will fascinate your child.

This is a wonderful children’s story! It takes a young girl and her aunt from boring daily life in the Caribbean to adventure in the blink of an eye. Who knew mango picking could be such scary good fun! The detailed illustrations provide a great sense of place. I would love to read more about these characters.

I really enjoyed the illustrations and the story!
It's set in the Caribbean and picking mangoes is very exotic to me. I'd love to visit this place.

Cute book for kids and the author tells a good story that they can learn from. The illustrations are adorable. I love the way it can be read with the Kindle sideways, and that the chapters are short and sweet with young readers in mind. I would highly recommend!
