One of my reading challenges this year included a prompt to read a book I loved as a child. I have to say, this book not only held up, but seems pretty relevant today too. It’s about pollution, hunting, and poaching and building a refuge for all the animals until even the planet itself is too sick for them. Luckily the humans eventually miss the animals and clean up their act. Here’s hoping 🤞
A long-lost childhood favorite, rediscovered, and apparently back in print. But, as they say, you can't go home again. Not always. The magic of this book felt by an avid little nine year old in 1979 wasn't felt by his older, wiser self; reading this as a grown up, it seemed simplistic, and sort of cheap. The Barbapapas ability to change shape is interesting; the cartoonish illustrations aren't anything to write home about, but they are sometimes fun. But the story... not so good.
This is one of my favorite books of all time. I remember reading this as a young child and it making a huge impact on my life. I still remember it after all these years!
This was one of my most beloved books as a young child. In fact, it was one of the first books I managed to read on my own - and I must have read it a hundred times more. I loved the kind-natured, shape-shifting animals and the overarching sentiment of this short read: to provide a clean, healthy environment for the animals in our midst, because we'll miss them when they're gone.
I recently went searching for a used hardback copy, as my childhood copy had long vanished, and the book itself is long out-of-print. It was a difficult search, but I was lucky to find ONE copy in decent shape and purchased it. The verdict now that I have it in hand? I still love it! I'll save this copy for my future grandchildren and/or other young readers in my life!
This is one of those very 70s books that I would have loved when it was new and I was young. Now I see it as lame and preachy.... But then, so many other books for children have been loved by many of them, to their parents' bemusement. Think of the Mr. Happy set of series, for example. In honor of the funny little girl I was, I'm giving this SF fantasy two extra stars, as adult me only could give it one.
this book will make any child an environmentalist. I still cry every time I read it because the real world hasn't woken up like the people in the book do.
