This was an enjoyable return to the town of Maria and its magical inhabitants, though it felt long in places. Noelle is an angry woman and she owns it, although it also means she reacts rashly and impulsively. I really struggled with her choice to take Tamatsu’s voice when she thought he cheated on her without even giving him a chance to explain. Surprising no one, it was a giant misunderstanding and they could have been together all these 800 years if she’d just listened to him. It’s not clear whether she’s really learned anything because her solution then becomes for her to give up her voice, but she never asks Tamatsu what he wants. And that felt unfair.
I really liked how this explored Tamatsu’s hungers and the way the various Fallen Angels fell and why. Tamatsu has been celibate and has not even touched anyone in over 800 years since Noelle left him. No physical touch, not even a handshake, because he cannot predict how it will affect his hunger. (As someone who lives alone during the pandemic and really misses hugging people, this made me feel incredibly empathetic toward him.) This made for an incredible build up toward his reunion with Noelle and that first touch and the way it happened was super hot.
The ending was really abrupt and things did not feel at all resolved between Tamatsu and Noelle. They really need to work on their communication skills. Also, it’s worth mentioning there’s an overuse of “grimace” and “cringe” that really started wear on me.
