Geoff Nicholson was a British novelist and nonfiction writer. He was educated at the Universities of Cambridge and Essex.
The main themes and features of his books include leading characters with obsessions, characters with quirky views on life, interweaving storylines and hidden subcultures and societies. His books usually contain a lot of black humour. He has also written three works of nonfiction and some short stories. His novel Bleeding London was shortlisted for the 1997 Whitbread Prize.
Kind of mediocre but humorous in parts reviews of his 37 most influential rock guitarists of the 90’s (plus Jimi Hendrix) according to the author. He puts great stock in aggressiveness and making unusual sounds with the instrument and is looking for pioneers in technique and artistry. I might peg him a sexist for finding not a single woman worthy of note, even in the end list of one hit wonders. Come on, Nancy Wilson, Joan Jett? You can’t find anyone? But I liked that he at least mentioned some queasiness over the phallic, rapist, imagery from some of the leading lights on his list. The blurbs were short and sort of reminded me of a Book Soup discussion among the hipsters working there. Rather superficial but good fun and short enough I didn’t feel I wasted that much time on it. Will probably check out some of his recommendations I previously had not much or any knowledge of. He could have been kinder to Mark Knopfler IMHO. He was very good on Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth.
