When everything changes, can renewal bring redemption?

Shane Boyle left Dublin for America burning most of his bridges and with no intention of returning, certain his future lay in Florida. When a family crisis forces him back to the city he grew up in, he knows his life will never be the same again. With his sister close to death, his mother and five-year-old nephew Danny need him not just to be around but also to be the rock they can depend on. Torn between panic about his new responsibilities and despair at his impending loss, love and a relationship are the last thing on his mind.

Chris Anderson left Australia for Dublin ten years ago with no intention of ever going back. For reasons he can’t explain, even to himself, he hasn’t been in a relationship for almost as long as he’s been in Ireland. Now thirty-five-years old, he wonders what happened to his dream of a lasting bond and a family to call his own.

When Shane and Chris hook up one night in a pub, neither knows that the next day they’ll meet again, this time as colleagues in a tattoo parlour. Chris has no idea about Shane’s dodgy past, and Shane can’t figure out the mountain of a man who refuses to take no for an answer. Having to reinvent his whole life is only the start of Shane’s process of renewal. Will Chris turn out to be his saviour or his downfall?

Helena Stone can’t remember a life before words and reading. After growing up in a household where no holiday or festivity was complete without at least one new book, it’s hardly surprising she now owns more books than shelf space while her Kindle is about to explode.

The urge to write did come as a surprise. The realisation that people might enjoy her words was a delightful shock. Now that the writing bug has well and truly taken hold, Helena can no longer imagine not sharing the characters and stories in her head and heart with the rest of the world.

Having left the hustle and bustle of Amsterdam for the peace and quiet of the Irish countryside she divides her time between reading, writing, long walks, and her part-time job in a library. A grown-up daughter and her ever-loving and patient husband make sure she occasionally takes a break too.

4.5 Stars Oh yess this was a beautiful read. Full of feelings and they were just where they should be....
For me this was the most imposing one from this serie. Although it’s #3 you can read it as a stand alone of course reading the first two is even better.
Shane and Chris.....
Chris from Australia works as a tattoo artist. At the age of thirty five wondering if their ever be a
future with a family and kids....
Shane returns from Florida because of a family crisis. He thought he never returned but fate or
Karma decided something else....
When they meet at a bar they have a quick encounter at a side garden and after that they shared a
pint. Shane don’t want to exchange mobile numbers....Chris is somewhat hurt by that.
They meet again at the shop where Shane works, Chris is helping out his boss. They are both
shocked... then Chris finds out who Shane is.....this from his friends and colleagues pov....
But Chris has a mind of his own and sees another Shane than Shane himself and everybody else.
Shane has it hard with a sister who will die very soon and his nephew who will be under his care....no
way he can be involved....

A wonderful written story, a total package about family, grieve, priorities, friendship, forgiveness,
opportunities, patience and love. The way how both men open up to each other, mind and bodily, I
felt engage and the whole story felt absolutely genuine.
Chris determined to be there for Shane. Shane redeeming himself.
I enjoyed this story very much and read it continuous. The personalities were so nice developed. The
environments felt like home, both men were close to my heart....they felt so realistic.
The whole story was covered with a warm blanket

I'm quite skeptical going in to read about Shane and Chris. Shane is the bad guy from Book 1 Patience and a total douchebag to both Troy and Xander. I wonder how will this book redeem his character and make me like him.

Shane came back to Dublin for his family. His sister is on deathbed and Shane had to be his nephew's guardian. Is a lot of responsibilities and burden for a young man like Shane and I can see his life as he know it it totally upheaval.

Chris is the Australian hottie that works for Troy. He picked up Shane at the bar for a short tryst and when subsequently meet him again while temporary helping out at a tattoo shop, Chris is totally smitten with Shane. The only reason I see why Chris is interested might be due to Shane looking lost, sad and vulnerable? Because Shane is practically standoffish and mopping most of the time.

I blame it on my preconceived notion on Shane and his history. No matter how he seems to be a change man here, he just never do enough to make him redeemable in my eyes. I understand why Chris is still interested despite some warning from Troy and Xander because Chris never experience any of those things before. All he see is a vulnerable man who needs his understanding and help with a little boy. If I actually read this one as a standalone without remembering all his action previously, I might like this more.

Shane moved away to Florida years ago, but now he's back in his hometown of Dublin, Ireland. His sister is dying and he's come back home to say goodbye and help raise his young nephew. Chris left Australia 10 years ago and came to Ireland to meet his grandmother, and even though she's since passed away, he decided he had nothing left down under, so he's made a life for himself here in Ireland. Shane and Chris meet in a pub and hook-up, but when Chris tries to exchange numbers with the man he would like to get to know better, Shane refuses him. They go their separate ways, but fate will bring them back together very soon.

This was a rather sad book. Watching Shane say goodbye to his sister was absolutely heartbreaking as was watching her son, Danny deal with the loss of his mother. God, no one that young should be made to deal with that. This story had me in tears more than once throughout, but it gave me hope, as well. Shane matures so much throughout this book. He stops running and finally faces the feelings he has for Chris head on. Chris might get his feelings hurt throughout the story, but he never gives up on Shane. He sticks by him throughout it all. The chemistry between them is out of this world and the sexy times were steamy and passionate.

The story is well-written and reads easily. The author's writing flows well and the story drew me in and kept me turning the pages. This is book three in the series, and although the first two couples are featured, one of them quite heavily, throughout the story, I never felt lost, so this can definitely be read as a standalone. My only complaint is I wish there was more, although the ending was nice, I like my endings more solid. Still, a wonderfully enjoyable story that I'd recommend!!

This is the third book in the Dublin Virtues m/m romance series and when I knew it was going to feature Shane as one of the main characters I was a little apprehensive to read it. For the first two books it was clearly outlined that he was an absolute pig who had left Troy in the lurch when he was supposed to be a partner in the new tattoo parlour business with Troy.

Chris is a new employee in Troy's tattoo shop and on a night at the pub he hooks up with a sexy stranger. When Chris goes to support another tattoo shop in the town as a favour to Troy he comes face to face with the man he had a passionate tryst with behind the pub – Shane! He knew of Shane but not who he was. Now he is in a dilemma of supporting Troy and Xander but also as he gets to know Shane better he can not see how he was the man who did the dirty on his friend, especially knowing all about Shane's family sorrows now.

I loved the dynamics between Shane and Chris and how their slow build relationship took shape. If I had read this as a stand alone I don't think I would have had much issue, however being a big fan of the series to date I already had that hatred for Shane and it kept pinging back to the forefront of my mind.

This was a great romance and I liked how the whole issue of the past was resolved but it still didn't clarify why Shane was like that previously. I just wished that could have been further emphasised and given a clear indication of Shane's dramatic change in character.

I loved Chris though, the big sexy Aussie and I wish he could have been partnered with someone other than Shane so that whole history thing didn't keep getting in the way. Overall though I did enjoy the storyline and the romance. The family emotional drama of Shane's sister also gave an added depth that nearly made me forgive him for being a douche to Troy. As I say it just needed that extra explanation and this would have been a five star read. All things considered though this is a 3.75 star read for me which I will push to a four because I love this series.

Wow! Sorry if this is a bit rambling, but there are a LOT of emotions after finishing this book!

If you've read the previous books in this series, you cannot forget Shane from book 1. This is Shane and Chris' story. Shane has returned from America and not for the most pleasant reasons. Shane's sister, Ann, has a terminal illness and is in hospice. Shane will be assuming guardianship of his nephew Danny. Shane??? Shane is going to be responsible for a little human? OMG!

Speaking of Danny, THANK YOU, Ms. Stone, for writing a five year-old that acts and talks like a five year-old! Loved Shane's Mum too :)

You know an author has skill when she can create a character that you loath, and then turn around and two books later make you care about that same character. That's exactly what Helena Stone did with Shane. Yes, he did some hurtful, mean, selfish things. I understand Troy and Xander being wary of him upon his return. However, I believe that people grow and change. Unfortunately it usually takes some major or traumatic event or situation to cause that change. In this case, it was Ann's passing and being forced to grow up and be responsible for Danny.

I understand that some readers will not be able to forgive Shane for his past actions/mistakes. We all deal with life differently. I guess I'm a bit more forgiving.

Thank goodness for Chris! A big, gorgeous Aussie. Chris slowly chips away all the bricks in the walls Shane has erected to protect his heart. Their slow-build relationship was sweet and at times very poignant. I also appreciated that Troy and Xander were able to at least make peace with Shane and it was not "insta-forgive/forget".

Thank you, Helena Stone, for a wonderful wrap-up of the Dublin Virtues series.

A Joyfully Jay review.

5 stars

Recently, I have been in a reading slump, left feeling unsatisfied by books I have finished. For me, there was a sense of excitement about beginning Renewal, knowing that Helena Stone’s stories never disappoint me, though Renewal surpassed all my expectations.

Renewal is the third book in Stone’s Dublin Virtues series. I have hugely enjoyed the previous two novels with Patience leaving me feeling warm and fuzzy and Equality filling me with pride and positivity. Renewal just ripped my heart into shreds and then rebuilt it, with hope.

To me, Renewal was much more than just words on a page. Stone taps into the emotions of her reader and I cocooned myself in Shane and Chris’ world, reacting to events without shame and yes, this included uncontrollable sobbing.

One thing I love most about this story is Shane. This is not to say I prefer him over Chris because Chris is warm, genuine, and wonderful, but Shane is a character whom we have known about since the beginning of book #1, Patience. Shane is someone we have disliked, knowing the effects of his selfish actions on both Troy and Xander. However, in Renewal, Stone shows us that it is possible for people to change although the reasons for this, in Shane’s case, are uneviable. I also think Stone has been thoughtful in her portrayal of Shane, giving Troy and Xander a part within the plot and allowing them to express their concerns for Chris, but also giving Shane the opportunity for redemption.

~ 4.5 Stars ~

Renewal by Helena Stone follows Shane Boyle and Chris Anderson. Both men are somewhat damaged. Shane has moved back to Florida because his sister is dying, and he needs to take the responsibility of caring for his five-year-old nephew. He’s a man who has difficulty committing to anything, particularly men, preferring one night stands. After all, men will eventually leave him, so he may as well beat them to the chase.

Chris moved back to Ireland after discovering that he had a grandmother. His mother left him once he turned eighteen, setting him up financially, but also letting him know he was on his own. When his grandmother dies, he truly is on his own, with no one to call family. He never imagined his life would turn out that way, but at thirty-five, he finds himself still single and no closer to finding his soul mate.
This is the scenario that sets the stage for out two protagonists to meet. One steamy night brings them together and for the remainder of the book we watch them struggle to find their way to one another.

The thing I liked best about this story is how brutal and painful some of the life events were. Shane, in particular, is placed in a heartbreaking situation, losing his sister and having to take on the responsibility of father/caregiver all at once. Not only has Shane worked hard to avoid serious responsibility, like being in a relationship or taking care of another person, but he’s emotionally devastated by the loss of one of the very few people in the world he truly loved. Watching him grapple with fear and sadness was gripping and real, often raw and bringing me close to tears.

While Chris’s challenges aren’t as severe or devastating as Shane’s, he nonetheless experiences the pang of finding himself approaching middle age and not having accomplished some of the milestones he imagined he would. Disappointment and loneliness plague him, yet he manages to hold onto the hope that one day he’ll find his happy ending. As Shane works through his neuroses about connecting and letting people in, Chris is remarkably steady without allowing himself to be used as a punching bag. This element to the story was both authentic and riveting and had me turning the pages to learn what would happen next.

The other aspect of the story that drew me in was Danny, Shane’s five-year-old nephew. He is just so sweet and brave and innocent. I’m a sucker when an author does a great job of incorporating a child (or children) into a story. Watching adults put their own needs aside in order to care for young children is such a sexy and romantic thing to witness, and it shows who the characters are deep down inside, despite any actions they exhibit to the contrary. Danny is so brave and sweet, facing his mother’s death, fearing that other adults in his life will leave him. Watching Shane shift from a selfish loner to someone who knows how to put the needs of a child first is amazing. And Chris couldn’t have been a sweeter and kinder person, accepting Danny, unequivocally, as a natural part of a package deal if he wants Shane in his life. He also understands that Shane, who’s always only had to worry about himself, now fears letting someone get close to Danny if they may end up leaving.

These elements made the story a highly enjoyable book. There wasn’t a whole lot of sex or even sexual tension. The love was more emotional as were the struggles. When the sex occurred, it fit in with the plot and wasn’t added for gratification; however, if you’re looking for a piping hot, steamy read, this book does not delve into that arena as much as other erotic romances do. This is not a criticism, just an observation. You need to be in the mood to watch emotions grow and mature when you read this one. Definitely not a light read for a quick laugh or thrill.

Some of the sayings seem to be local to Ireland, so American readers unfamiliar with the vernacular should be aware of that. An example is how Shane has “burned his ships” as opposed to “burning bridges”, as we say in America, when it comes to making enemies and closing doors that could’ve have remained open to him. This is one example, but there are several throughout. I found it added to the charm of the story.

There were also certain elements to the story which were present, but not fully developed. Two such elements were the history Shane shares with two other characters in the story as well as the topic of Chris’s sexuality. As I read, I wondered what the significance of those storylines were, but never really got my answer. That said, they didn’t need to be developed in order for the story to remain robust, complete, and fulfilling. While it would’ve been interesting to see how those elements tied naturally into the larger story, I think the author was wise not to elaborate and expand on those areas. The story would’ve become too long and felt a bit clunky if she had.

Overall, I was thrilled with this book and definitely plan on putting Helena Stone on my TBR list.

3.5 stars - Shane is the bad guy from book 1, the guy who left Troy high and dry when he up and took off to Florida leaving Troy to struggle with opening their tattoo shop. He also tried to come between Troy and Xander in the beginning of their relationship. So, needless to say, he has not been a good egg from the start and he had a lot of making up to do this time around.

Chris is one of Troy’s employees who happens to meet and hook up with Shane one night, only to run into him again when he helps out another tattoo shop. They hit it off, but Shane wouldn’t so much as exchange numbers, so Chris was left trying to interpret mixed signals, which pretty much carried on for a good portion of the story.

Despite the warnings from both Shane and Troy/Xander, Chris saw something in Shane. The man in the story didn’t appear to be the same man Chris had just met, so he decided to make his own opinions. Turns out there is more to Shane than he lets on, though not more to the story of his past actions. Shane has returned to Ireland to take care of his dying sister’s son, something which has forced him to be a different person than the self-serving bastard that he was.

The story about the death of Shane’s sister was sad, but it turned a bit sweeter when Shane came around and owned up to what he had done, apologized and was able to move on. While it did seem as though there should have been more of a blow up with Troy/Xander and Shane, they did eventually confront the elephant in the room and agreed to a truce.

This was a smooth reading story that, even given the circumstances, felt light on the angst scale. My biggest issue here was that I never really felt the connection between Chris and Shane. Chris wanted a family, and Shane needed help and support, so it seemed like a natural relationship, but I never felt like they were truly in love. Either way, it was a nice addition to the series. If I had read this one first, I may have felt differently without knowing Shane’s past, but I still believe these are best read in order.

After reading the other books in this series, I went into Renewal with some strong negative opinions about Shane--and rightfully so considering his behavior until now. I had very little faith that a story could be written for him to redeem his actions, and a built-in dislike for his character before I even started reading this story. So what does the author do? Turns my emotions upside down to where I would now be considered a staunch defender of Shane--not of what he did and said previously, but of the man he has become since then.

While I was already going into this story not feeling too good about Shane's character, I really liked Chris right from the start. He's steady, fair and sees and tries to understand everyone's points of view before making his own decisions. He and Shane seem at first to have hot, instant chemistry together...but after that initial contact, things kind of become muted. It has nothing to do with their actual chemistry and compatibility, and everything to do with Shane's attitude--push others away before they can do it to you, especially now that he has his nephew to think about.

The more Shane and Chris spend time together, the more obvious their connection. What everything hinges on--and where the tension and angst comes from--is Shane's ability to let someone in and start a real relationship. The heightened emotions that are generated from his family situation add to it all, and that's what really started to change my perception of him. He's also thoroughly devoted to his nephew Danny, who is such an adorable sweetheart.

I really enjoyed Renewal, and thought it fit in quite well with the series. It was great to see Troy, Xander, Lorcan and Eric again from the first two books, and I was very happy to see how things turned out once Shane was in the picture. Renewal falls somewhere between 4 and 4.5 stars for me, I'm kind of waffling on the exact point so let's say 4.25. There's not an overabundance of physical scenes, but those that are there do kick this up to be a book for readers 18+ for adult language and M/M sexual content.

Renewal by Helena Stone
3.5 Stars – Review by Dawn Honeycutt

Renewal is the third book in the Dublin Virtues series and honestly, my least favorite. We’ve read about Shane throughout the entire series and he is nothing short of a complete and total jerk (I’m using a P.G. word, but I can think of plenty of colorful words to describe him better). I’m all for the jerk learning lessons and getting his HEA, but frankly, Shane didn’t do anything to deserve it in this book until about 60% of the way through and even then I can’t say I was rooting for him.

Chris works for Troy at the tattoo shop that Troy owns. The same shop that Troy was supposed to own with Shane before Shane left him high and dry to pursue his dreams in America. When Troy’s former employer asks Troy to lend him a tattoo artist one day a week for a month, Troy agrees to send Chris. Chris and Shane meet at a bar the night before and have a random hookup although Chris would have liked it to be more.

Chris is pleasantly surprised when he arrives at Barry’s shop to find that he’s been paired with Shane for the days that he’ll be working there. The first day Shane is cold, standoffish and won’t tell Chris why he’s acting that way other than to keep repeating that Chris needs to get the story from Troy.

Troy and Xander deliver their history with Shane to Chris with a warning that Chris would be better off staying away from Shane although they do say that Chris is a big boy and can make his own decisions. (Big of them)

Shane returned to Dublin when he found out his sister was dying. He’s left as the guardian of his young nephew and as a man accustomed to living for nothing more than quick sex and work as a tattoo artist, becoming a full-time parent is a huge change.

Okay, I get that Shane is going through a lot. Anyone in his position would have a difficult time. The storyline writes in abandonment issues which I get as it relates to Shane’s dad, but I think is a stretch when it was about his nephew’s dad splitting.

Chris is a nice guy. He’s gorgeous, he goes out of his way to be there for Shane and isn’t pushy in anyway and yet Shane is horrible to him over and over again. If I were reading a paperback, I would have thrown the book a few times. There is absolutely no way I would have let a friend of mine such a Chris pursue someone like Shane. Chris deserves a HEA, but I think he could have done so much better than Shane.

Alright, so… I’ve come into this one, not realizing that it was book 3 in the series… I know, I know…my fault… It didn’t really take anything away from the story though, but it did make me want to go back and read the other guys’ stories, so I’ve already bought the first two…. It’s that good!

As anyone who knows me, knows I’m a sucker for a hot guy with a kid/kids. This story didn’t disappoint. Shane, I guess as it seems from previous books that he was a bit of a selfish twat… Using people until he was done with them and then off to better things and what have you. But, as we get to know him in this book, he wasn’t that way at all. My heart broke for him and the things he’s gone through in his life, and most especially what he was going through at the time he meets Chris.

Chris meets him at a bar the night before helping out a friend at a local tattoo shop, Chris and Shane are both tattoo artists, but it’s there he runs back into Shane. Shane is broody and exhausted and got quite the attitude at first. He doesn’t get close to anyone and he’s bent on pushing Chris away, unable to figure out what he wants with him…. But, Chris is patient and understanding and he knows in his gut that there’s more to the story than what Shane is showing.

Honestly, people grieve and do things in their own way, especially to spare their feelings of getting hurt, but I didn’t blame Shane a bit for his actions, although I wish he wouldn’t have burned so many bridges before he needed people in his life. I’m so glad Chris was relentless and patient with him… he needed to show Shane that he wasn’t going to up and leave and he was so great with Shane’s nephew, Danny. That was so cute… like I said… sucker for hot guys with kids!

I cannot wait to go back and read the others, although I suspect it won’t paint Shane in the best light. At least I’ll know that he redeems himself and gets his HEA in the end.

I really enjoyed it and hope there’s more to this series, coming!

Can renewal bring redemption?

Do I even know where to start with this story? Let me put it this way. For two books I literally hated Shane. I hated what he had done and how it was done. I was upset that he allowed arrogance and greed to shape his life.

And then I started this book and like the fog lifting, there was the explanation. THERE was all the reasons why. And when he told Chris: "You make me want things I've never been interested before..." one had to wonder could he be forgiven? Should he be?

As Shane was a intricate part of the Dublin Virtues through his ties to the other men, I expected this tattoo artist to carry the burden of Renewal. I had already had it figured out as washing away his sins and becoming clean. Little did I realize that Chris, another tattoo artist who worked for Shane's ex-partner would provide the explanation for the tattoo substory.

I labelled Shane the crazy ex from book one Patience and Chris the big Aussie who had come to Ireland looking for a better life. Both men were drawn to each other and through circumstances found themselves circling each's orbits. I connected almost instantly with this story, and felt all of Shane's pain on loss and accepting a responsibility he knew little about.

I found his nephew Danny to be such a sweetheart and Chris's willingness to take this family on made him larger than life. As Shane fought at every turn, not expecting a sure ride through life, Chris held on and proved that even the most down-trodden person can still find pleasure and completness in life.

I voluntarily and honestly reviewed this book without bias or persuasion from Pride Publishing

I feel like I have to start by saying I went into this one wondering how Helena Stone could make Shane into a redeeming character after his jerkiness but she really delivered. I appreciated what Shane was dealing with in Renewal and felt for him and it really did my heart good to see him grow. I adored Chris right from the start and so loved his loyalty towards Shane, not dismissing his crappy behavior in the past but believing in his future. These two really are meant to be.

Shane has returned to Ireland because his sister is on her deathbed and he, along with his mother, will be caring for her young son Danny. (Who is totally heart-meltingly adorable!) He's back working at the tattoo parlor he used to work for and just trying to make it through each day. Chris works for Troy but ends up helping out at the parlor where Shane works. The two form a very tentative friendship at first, but there is an undeniable connection between them. Shane is good at pushing people away, it's what he's always done, but sweet heart Chris isn't going to let Shane push, not this time.

This story definitely has some heavy, emotional moments that made my heart hurt, but it also had some wonderful smiles and heartwarming ones as well. This is a journey of healing for Shane and allowing someone else in his life in a very real way. Chris is that perfect person for Shane, who won't take crap from him, won't make excuses and will love him anyway. I was definitely surprised by this book and really enjoyed it. It's more of a slow-burn story, really focusing on the relationship and healing. If you've read the first two books in this series (which you totally should) definitely give Shane a second chance!

Shane Boyle left Dublin a couple of years back for better things in Florida on his terms which didn't really leave many un-burned bridges to come home to when tragedy strikes. Chris Anderson came to Dublin from Australia a decade ago and even though his career has found a home at Pins & Needles Tattoo Parlor his personal life is not as satisfying. When these two meet one night and have a bit of a hook-up their lives will never quite be the same even if they aren't exactly on the same page at the same time.

I can't lie, when I read that book 3 in Helena Stone's Dublin Virtues series was going to be about Shane, the man who left Troy in a financial lurch in Patience, book 1 and how he interfered between Troy and Zander, I really didn't think I'd be able to warm to him as a proper character with his own love story. Could the author really make a man like Shane redeemable? I had my doubts but I went in with an open mind and to say I was pleasantly surprised would be an understatement. I really loved how Shane wasn't immediately redeemed, we get to see what brought him home and how it has humbled him and put things in perspective. Chris needs no redeeming but his heart needs healing and together they may just find their place in this world.

I really loved how the author doesn't make everything okay right away without struggle, both internal and externally for both boys. I also loved seeing Troy and Zander pop in and find a way to overcome their past troubles with Shane. I just really enjoyed Renewal from beginning to end, even if my acceptance of Shane surprised me, to make a character we've had reason to hate likeable takes talent and I look forward to see what the author brings us next.

As much as I enjoyed Patience and Equality, the first two books in the Dublin Virtues series, I shamelessly admit that Renewal – for me – is handily my favorite and left a far greater impression on me.

For those who have already read the first two books and been introduced to Renewal’s main characters Chris and Shane, any and all preconceived notions should be left at the door before opening the book. Chris is still the solid, well-rounded nice guy, but he’s so much more than that. His patience, protectiveness, and fairness is undoubtedly almost surreal, but also overwhelmingly refreshing. Shane, on the other hand, is no longer the poor excuse for a human being that readers have been led to believe.

Chris and Shane connect initially thanks to an impromptu hook-up at a bar, only to come face-to-face as colleagues the next day. Chris can’t explain why he feels so protective towards Shane, while Shane – who continually pushes Chris away from getting to know him any better – finds himself trying to deny his attraction to the strapping Australian. Shane is confident that once Chris hears his boss Troy’s version of how he treated him before taking off for the States, Chris will want nothing to do with him. To avoid rejection and heartache, Shane tries to construct a barrier between them, but he’s unprepared for Chris’s real reaction and resilience.

Renewal was a heartwarming read for me. Yes, I wanted to beat Shane over the head with a broom for constantly pushing Chris away, but his reasons for doing so were logical, if not valid or justified. And witnessing Shane’s transformation from absolute scum to human – and his subsequent interactions with Troy and Xander – were plausible and very well scripted.

The scenes between Shane and his sister actually brought me to tears – that takes talent – and his mother’s efforts to clue Chris in to who Shane really is and what he needed were endearing. Even though the physical/emotional consummation between Chris and Shane took a while to come to fruition, the wait was definitely worth it, and actually seemed more genuine, natural, and authentic.

Renewal is a wonderfully fulfilling read. I’ve come to appreciate and thoroughly enjoy author Helena Stone’s descriptive, evenly paced, non-rushed, natural, and finely crafted writing style. I’m looking forward to what she brings readers next.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader’s Copy of Renewal.

Think this was probably my fave of the series. I always love an anti-hero.

This one is about Shane.

We've heard nothing but bad about Shane through book 1 and 2. This one see's a huge turnaround.

Shane is back from Florida. He's started working in VikInk again. The shop is down by a worker so the owner has asked Troy for help. Troy agreed to loan him Chris for one day a week for a month.

Chris enters VikInk on his first day and encounters Shane. He's met Shane before in the pub and after a steamy encounter he wanted more. Shane refused. Not knowing he was "The" Shane that ruined Troy's life Chris treats him without contempt. Shane thinks that Troy has told him everything. Chris knows nothing. But what he does know is that there's a chemistry between them he can't deny.

Shane is no position for a relationship, plus he's scared. Shane has so much going on in his life new responsibilities to take care of. Chris is older and more sure of himself so he pursues what he knows is there.

I'm finding it difficult to word much more without spoiling it so I'll stop there.

I really enjoyed this one. Maybe it felt a bit deeper than the other two.

I really liked the two main characters. I think in previous books Shane was just immature. I didn't really feel hate for him so i think that's why i really liked him in this one. Chris was also lovable. I really liked how he was his own person. Just because others didn't like Shane he took him at face value until he proved otherwise.

The love scenes between the two of them were kind of sweet and made Shane quite vulnerable. I loved that. Gone was the cocky one night stander! Chris brought out the best in him i feel and i think Chris being more mature really helped for a great dynamic.

I want to say more but i hate spoilers so I'm going to be a little vague.

The main plot of the story was done really well i felt. It was written with sensitivity and I had tears in my eyes and felt everything that Shane's family went through. Bravo for the feels!

As i said this was my fave if the series! Really enjoyable. Well researched and written and also better paced i feel.

Book & Author: Renewal by Helena Stone
Rating: 5 stars

First off, I love this freaking series. I swear each one gets better than the last and this one just about broke me. Bring the tissues!! The heartbreak was some of the most poignant writing I’ve read in a good long while.

The time it took for these two guys to finally connect for more than the brief hook up thy had in the pub was well paced since Shane had so much going on in his life. Shane was the one here that needed the time to move around all the pieces of his world to finally get to the HEA point. It wasn’t easy. Shane had a lot to make up for from his terrible treatment of Troy and Xander in book one. Chris was this big guy who reminded me of just a down to earth guy willing to see the person and not their past. He was a perfect balance for Shane with his calm and steady personality.

Danny was a wonderful addition to the story and my heart broke for him but he had such great support in Shane and his grandmother. Although, there were tears for me still wouldn’t count this as a pretty low angst level story. The connection between Shane and Chris was slow and I think they felt it before I did but for me, that’s because I following the characters, especially Shane, and the more emotional connection didn’t come out until later in the story.

Even though this can be read as a standalone I wouldn’t recommend it since you won’t get the full scope of Shane and the bad things he did to deserve the skepticism in who he was now.

I received a copy for reviewing purposes Having read the first two books I wasn't sure I'd enjoy a story with Shane as the hero, especiallygiven how he was portrayed in the previous ones. However Ms Stone does an excellent job of redeeming him and turned him into the perfect hero for this story. I really respected Chris because he was so patient and loving with Shane at a time when he needed that the most. Overall, I think this one might end up my favourite story from the Dublin Virtues series. It has everything I hoped for after reading the blurb and little Danny might even end up my favourite character, such an adorable little tyke.

This is book three in the Dublin Virtues series. I think you should at least read book one, Patience, before this, to give you the full effect of Shane and what he did.

Jumping straight in here, because I'm left with one word to tell you how I feel about this book.

WOW!!!!

I said Patience was cute, and Equality was nice. Good, positive words for two very good books that didn't quite blow me away.

But this one?? I cried a lot!! I cheered a lot. I cried some more. I was warned, but warnings never quite hit you til you read a book, and this one hits you, fair and square in the heart!!

OH!!!

We met Shane in Patience, he was the one who left Troy high and dry and who had his way with Xander and was done. He has a not so good reputation and I was worried about how Stone could write a story for him without that nastiness coming through.

I need not have worried because the Shane here is NOT the man who went to America. He comes home to help his sister, who is close to death, his 5 year old nephew and his mum. He is, I think, quite broken, by what's happened. Anyone would be, but Shane more so, since he basically flips his personality on it's head. He freely says, in the course of this book, he was a barsteward (yes, I know that's not a proper word, but I can't swear in a review, Mr Amazon doesn't like it!! ) for what he did to Troy and Xander, his apologies are given. But it's Chris who has the most effect on him, I think.

From the time Chris sees Shane, looking so lost, in the pub, something pulls at him. He doesn't know at the point that it's THE Shane, but he finds out. But Chris is keen to point out to Troy and Xander that HIS Shane isn't the same Shane they are talking about, he is a totally different soul, and Chris is old enough to make his own mind up. If the old Shane shows his face, Chris will walk away.

I loved that neither man could fight the pull, that neither man could explain it. It's quite beautiful, watching Chris and Shane come together, after that first rushed time in the pub. Quite early, I think, there is love between the two of them, but neither can see it. And I loved watching it all come together.

I've tagged it darker/grittier because of what Shane is dealing with at home. It may carry some triggers for some readers. Me included. Made me remember going through all that, made for a tearful read.

Bravo, Ms Stone, for saving the best for last. I read this in one sitting, and this was the longest of the three.

5 full stars.

Review originally published at Joyfully Jay Reviews

Shane Boyle and Chris Anderson meet one night in a pub in Dublin. After a few drinks and a quick hook-up, both men are left feeling they have a connection, but sure they will never meet again. Until the next day when Chris walks into VikInk, helping out at the short-staffed tattoo shop as a favor for his boss. Shane also works at VikInk, but is wary of Chris after realizing that it is Chris’ boss who Shane let down in a big way when he left Dublin for America months previously.
Chris is warned that Shane is arrogant and self-centered, but still something attracts him to the man, despite the fact that he hasn’t wanted to be in a relationship for years. Yet, Shane has changed. He has been forced to grow up and accept responsibility – not only for his past actions, but guardianship for his five-year-old nephew, Danny. When Shane is left heartbroken after the death of his sister, Chris steps in as a friend, but Shane just wants to push him away, convinced that he has to sacrifice his own happiness for that of Danny.
The main reason Renewal is such an emotional story is due to Stone’s attentive storytelling. Not only did I find myself attached to Chris and Shane because of their qualities, but I thought Shane’s visits to his sister in the hospice were really important. Grief is a universal feeling and I was transported back to final moments with my own family members. Stone is sensitive, but the conversations between Shane and Ann remind us of the sad reality of the situation and the fact that there is a five-year-old child involved only invokes our emotions further.
The connection between Chris and Shane is intense, but made more genuine by Stone, in my opinion, because it is not just about sex. Instead, in Renewal, sex is an accumulated expression of everything they share. I think this makes the sex scenes Stone writes hotter because their passion is palpable.
Renewal offers everything I hope for when reading a gay contemporary romance novel and the Dublin Virtues series has gained Stone a new fan; I can’t wait to read more of her books. Renewal is a must read but don’t forget to keep some tissues nearby!

While I enjoyed books 1 & 2, I think this one was my favorite so far. I really liked Chris, he was such a "this is me, like it or leave it" kind of guy and was not letting anyone tell him who he could be in a relationship or friends with. I was worried Shane would not be able to come back from his actions in the previous books but he really does grow up and take responsibility for his crappy attitude and his past bad actions.
I thought the book was well written from both Shane and Chris' perspectives and the way the author really put both guys out their regarding their feelings. I teared up at one part and loved how these two worked through everything that was against them.
