4.5, but I’ll round up because Fifth Essence was the perfect ending to a great series.
Plot: In addition to finding a cure for Rowan and getting James back, Addie must deal with several new problems, including stopping a growing horde of zombies from attacking the city and deal with two more huge problems.
Characters:
Addie’s still kind of impulsive, but she really changed for the better in Fifth Essence. She does everything she can to help her friends, even at the risk of losing them all. Rowan returned to his former sexiness, Ian was as awesome as ever, and Neill was the perfect baddie. However, the award for most changed character is a tie. It’s hard to pick a winner because Doug became so much more likeable (especially through his interactions with Era) and George was completely surprising.
Writing:
As usual, the editing is spot on, and because Addie is facing so many problems, there is a ton of suspense. There is some language (including the f-bomb). There are also sexual situations, but they are not graphic. If I had to give the book a rating, I would probably say it was a mild R.
The Bottom Line:
The Fifth Essence nailed it. There was action, suspense, romance, surprises … you name it! Plus, the book not only gave each of the characters some kind of challenge to conquer, but also tied up any loose ends from the previous books. Final Formula was a really enjoyable series; I’ll definitely miss reading about Addie and crew.
