Mac knows Rogue is his from the moment she holds him hostage, but she'll never let him claim her...
If Mac ran the world, everything would be better. Everyone would say what they felt, mean what they said, and never, ever get offended. At least that's what he thought his own personal utopia would look like, until he met Rogue.
Rogue's life was just fine, thank you very much. An expert in her chosen field of danger and lies, she was well on her way to retiring by 30, as long as she could keep her curious mental slide under control. Until that hot-as-sin cop showed up, turning her life upside down, bringing her everything she'd always-and never-wanted.
(Standalone, but you will enjoy it more if you start with One True Mate #1.)
This is book 5 in Lisa Ladew’s One True Mate series. While each book covers a couple’s romantic arc – there’s several mystery/suspense storylines running through the series. In that aspect these don’t really stand alone and need to be read in order starting with Shifter’s Sacrifice. Reviews may contain spoilers to earlier books.
Mac has been one of my favorite secondary characters and his “bromance” with Bruin has been a lot of fun. This book really has two halves - the first maybe 40% introducing us to Rogue and giving more background on Mac… then these two meet and it’s fireworks. Because we all knew Mac wouldn’t be happy with a shrinking Violet. Ladew didn’t disappoint in giving us a a female version of Mac. Though uniquely herself. She’s strong, smart, independent and has quite the mouth.
I love that Mac thought he’d just charge into his mate’s life and take over and that would be that. Nope - Rogue makes him earn it. Fireworks between these two.
As always, the pacing really kicks up toward the end. I like the addition of more antagonists, powers, and some big reveals.
I cannot wait for Bruin’s book, Bear’s Redemption.
Narration: Michael Pauley is wonderful again. Bingeable performance. More characters needing more voices/distinctions and Pauley handles it fantastically.
Well. This one is almost better than the dragon one.
I know I know. Don't freak out. I'm all for dragon smutty-mc-smut-fest, buttttt, there was something about this one that just did it for me. It was a quick read for me and there's a fucking kick-ass-don't-need-your-name MC. (Though there were some parts I wanted to shake her and tell her to fucking get over herself.)
Butttttt, I liked it a lot more than I thought I would.
I didn't like Mac at first but then he started to slowly grow on me.
My issue with this book is that the entire series is based on "One True Mates".......................
Mac has met his mate, Rogue, years ago, four to be exact. He even slept with her BUT he didn't recognize her as his One True Mates ?!?
"She rolled her eyes. “You don’t even remember me. Great, even better. Just what a girl wants to hear. Is four years so far out of your man-whore cycle that you can’t remember anyone from that long ago?” His eyes narrowed, then widened and she could see very well the moment when the knowledge of who she was slammed into him. He half pointed at her, then wiped his mouth, then pointed at her again. “You’re her. From Yosemite.”"--Chapter 23
How is that possible?
I could see if he has had amnesia but no, he is just walking around "doody doody do" while other shifters are searching and pining over their One True Mates.
And, here Mac has already found his and doesn't realize????
I'm sorry, I call BS..
I couldn't rate this book any higher due to that craziness.

The heroine in this story was awful. Half the time I was reading I wanted to slap her across the face. Mac deserved better then some heroine constantly running from him. I also hated that they didn't meet until chapter 20. I skipped around after they met. I couldn't finish this book. I will continue to read the series because I'm invested in the characters. I am excited for bruins story. I really hope that the h's in the rest of the series aren't as awful or as stubborn as rouge. God I really did hate her.
So all of the other heroines have been sweet and pretty easily feel in line with the idea of them being half angel..fated mated...etc. I found this to be the first book where the heroine resisted and took a lot longer to come around her destiny. That being said I that is exactly what Mac needed. He needed a harsh, unbending, independent, kicka** woman, and that is exactly who he got! Another great, quick, easy read in the series. I recommend that this series be read in order.
I have to admit that I love anything and everything that Lisa Ladew writes and anything that Michael Pauley narrates. There is just something about this man that makes me feel all gooey inside. He is amazing. There is nothing that I have not listened to him where I was like, 'You know, he sounds like trash.' Everything has just been great and I cannot get enough of him. I will listen to all of his works if it is the last thing I do on Audible.
I have to admit that Rogue was starting to get on my nerves. I know that Rogue is supposed to complement Mac in every way but it came to a point where I thought Mac would be better off alone. I know Rogue has a lot of issues going on, like being raised to be a theft and all that, however her 'sisters' had it a lot worse. Take for instance Cerise, from Shifter's Innocent, she went through so much but yet never treated Beckett as though he was worthless. I do understand trust does not come easy to Rogue but come on.
I get that being tough is kinky but if she did not do her turn around when she did I would have just stopped. I cannot do the whole victim play all throughout a book.
I did enjoy this book though. I cannot wait until Bruin gets his book Bear's Redemption. He is just such a great character and I need to know more about him and what the great secret is.
I've read the other 4 books in this series and they were pretty good but this one is nothing like the others. Bruin (the bear shifter) sounds like a big ol' dumby and Mac (wolf shifter and our hero) is nothing but a love-sick fool, AND he hasn't even met her yet. I'm on chapter 13 and one reviewer on Amazon says they don't meet until chapter 20. I do not want to wait that long while Mac goes around sniffing the air and suffering with a hard-on everytime he catches a whiff of her. Not to mention, Mac isn't all that likable. He seems to want to fight everyone, for no reason. Maybe I'm just done with this series. Most of the time a series gets worse as it goes along.
Oh, and the F-bomb was used 299 times. Whew! That's a lot.
As to the narration: Michael Pauley did a terrible job on the voices this time.
Ladew nailed it. This is the best in the series and Mac is officially 😍my favorite. Coming in a real close second in this series is Rogue (I still got mad love for Beckett Oswego, my second favorite Shiften). There's no shrinking violet in this tale! No demurely protected female by the big, strong male. Finally...a one true mate who is interesting and just as foul-mouthed as her mate! Rogue is deliciously fun, take-no-prisoners, feck it all, large and in charge--and a criminal. Mac and Rogue are an accident waiting to happen while hapless Bruin is along for the ride. There were a few times I felt bad for Mac for the harsh words of his mate...then I remembered how he'd spoken to his KSRT team...Karma!
This story has everything--action (swearing), suspense (swearing), humor (more swearing), snarky banter (swearing), kidnapping, a rut, a dead body, field trips to Chicago, disappearing and reappearing, a "bearmance", and finally, smoking hot mate sex (poor Bruin's ears were melting)!😳 The Dragen steps in to save the day and you gotta love Bruin, he is the ultimate teddy bear. I was totally caught up in this one and didn't want it to end.
The dialogue is hilarious. Rogue (Lily) and Mac will never be Ozzie and Harriett but it will always be interesting in Serenity and at what Mac affectionately refers to as Camp Fecksalot.
Ok I’m a firm believer in some books that hero’s work for the heroin. But in almost every one of these books I hate the female characters at times. And this book she knew/felt and saw she was hurting her mate. She was telling herself this time trust. You don’t have to be strong. But nope he literally bared all to her and she (figuratively) ripped his heart out. He said if you say no I will be a shell of a man. She did it anyway. Yes she came running back to him after rejecting him for Who knows how many times... though yes it finally worked out but hell I still didn’t like her when she met her sisters. Not a fan.
2 stars cause well Mac is an ass but he’s honest I liked him. If karma is a factor for him then she whooped him for multiple lives with his mate.
I mostly enjoyed this series but I don’t believe I will continue cause the women in here just anger me. Not everyone is the same and that’s what’s best about reading because there is a type out there for everyone. I will still read Lisa’s work xoxo thank you.

I do not normally write reviews or read much on author 's websites how ever I did after this book I am so pleased to know that there will be more.
I really can't wait for Troy and Trent oh and Sebastian.
I have found what I have read so far have been what I call easy reading, I don't have to think hard about what is written I enjoy reading books like this in between hard thinking books.
As I work hard in the day and I don't always want to come home and read a hard thinking book when I'm tiered I want to relax and enjoy what I'm reading.
Lisa's writing does exactly that for me I can be half asleep and I can understand what is going on.
Thank you Lisa for providing such wonderful creations.
Where to begin... I'm going to start off by saying that Rogue is a total bit... brat. She throws temper tantrums almost constantly and can't get out of her own way. The first moment of romance took place at 75%. The vast majority of this romance (?) novel was her being a jerk and Mac chasing after her. Mate or not, there's no way I would put up with her long term. She is horrible to him for the majority and then she was, let's just say, impolite to her sisters when she finally met them. Reading this book is like reading about a 15 year old snotty mean girl. I wanted a shifter romance, but this wasn't it.
I adore this series. I rarely like a series as much as I like this one, but I simply couldn't stand Rogue. I'm on to the next one. Happy reading.
This series has been hit or miss for me. I was excited for Mac. I thought we would get a feisty heroine who lead him on a merry chase. NOPE! We got a woman who thinks it’s okay to assault me with knives and cut them. One who is verbally abusive to a sweet bear and supposedly destined mate. This woman was an awful nightmare, at no point was any of this okay. Getting rough in the bedroom is fine but this crossed so many lines, but it was okay because he was a shifter. Physical assault isn’t sexy and is totally directness from rough sex.
I was looking forward to Mac's story... but egads... you turned him into a whipped puppy! Yikes... Rogue is horrid. Also... the frequent knifing and childish behavior of her's is just plain irritating. The next book is my favorite bear. Hopefully Lisa keeps him sweet.
Thief meets cop and they are mates? WTF! Great snark with push and pull between Mac and Rogue!
I do NOT CONSIDER this to be a stand-alone read, as there are reoccurring characters, overlapping / consecutive timelines and overarching themes. I highly recommend these be read in series order for maximum reader satisfaction and to prevent spoilers.
⛔️ If you have not read the previous stories in the series, the following may contain spoilers.
Contains subject matter that may be a trigger or offensive to some including adult language, steamy adult intimate scenes (some light BDSM scenes of dominance, submission and restraint) and violence such as kidnapping / abduction, murder, torture, assault, rape, betrayal, mental and physical child abuse, etc.
There are a few grammatical issues, but they are minimal. Mainly a few missing or extra inserted words. I mention this for readers such as myself that visualize the story as it is read, because when errors occur it is interrupted.
The world building in this story is solid and I loved the snarky, smarta$$ comments throughout. There are some scenes that had me laughing till tears filled my eyes and others that made me mad (specifically at the references to Rogue’s and Mac’s childhoods).
In this story, Rogue and Mac are basically identical versions of each other, but on opposite sides of the law. Rogue is a thief, exactly as she was raised to be, and Mac is a cop with the Serenity Khain Response Team (SKRT). Rogue is really good at disguises and locks. She has a couple of things that have occurred in the recent past that shows her innate ability with locks has grown. So much so that she can open them without tools …
Rogue refuses to work for anyone else but herself, but especially for a man. She won’t allow herself to be anything but self reliant. Soren her current contact for jobs has been flirting and hinting at more, but she knows as soon as he does, it will be the end of their working relationship. She has also always been able to tell when she is being watched, so as she is completing her latest job of stealing a file for Soren, she feels multiple sets of people watching and following her (Some really good evasive tactics take place during these scenes).
Rogue gets away and gets an offer from the brother of Soren that she normally wouldn’t take on such short notice, but the money offered is really good and it would give her the ability to get out of town. So she accepts and makes plans to travel to Serenity …
Mac is a jerk, always pushing against people, so much so that his only really close friend is Bruin (a bear firefighter on loan to the police). Apparently he has the gift of seeing the future and tells Mac that his mate will be at the upcoming rut.
What will happen if she is there? What if she is with another male, would he kill him? What will happen when he finds out she is the pussycat burglar, or she finds out he is a cop?
Oh my gosh I thought the other books were the best but I was wrong; I loved this book more. It was so freaking hilarious 😂. The interaction between Mac, Bruin and Rouge was pretty freaking awesome. I've never laughed so much reading 📖 a book before. I absolutely loved this book. Yes Mac is officially my fav now. There's no damsel in destress in this book 📚. I thought Rouge was a little harder with Mac but Mac has had his day with the members of the KRST team. This book had everything in it action, (swearing) humor, (swearing) snarky banter, field trip, (more swearing) bearance and so much smoking hot mate sex (poor Bruin had to listen to it all). But there was nothing like the man that narrated the book made Bruin sound like a bear 🐻, Michael Pauley. I hope he'll narrate my next book. Bruin is the best best friend ever. I absolutely loved his kind heart ❤️ and he's the most insightful character in the series. Best book ever!!!
Bruin:
Bruin dropped the last of his fries and pushed his plate away. He’d finally had enough. In Mac’s eyes, it was nothing short of a bear-freaking-miracle. A bearacle, Bruin might say. Mac snorted, but before he could tell Bruin, the big male’s eyes looked anywhere but at Mac and he spoke as if reciting something he’d memorized in school, something that pained him terribly. “The bearen have lost their way and now they will pay. Only the Bear of Great Insight can renew them, make them worthy again. Through the strength and purity of his choices and the caring of his one true mate, all bearen will be restored to their former glory, able to work as one again.” This time Mac was the one who looked around to see who might be listening. Leather do-rag was facing the other way, but that didn’t mean anything. Mac dropped his voice low and leaned over the table, almost talking in Bruin’s ear. “Is that a prophecy?”
Bruin opened his eyes, pushed off the wall, and took a hand to his own crotchal area, almost curiously. He shifted the goods around, then met Mac’s eyes. “She only gave you twelve inches? She gave the rest of us sixteen.” Sebastian snorted. His Defcon level lowered slightly, although Mac could still feel the hate coming off him in waves. Just general hate now, no longer aimed at Bruin like a rifle scope. Mac shot Bruin a look. “If you’ve got a sixteen-inch dick, I’ll kiss your bare ass.” Bruin bobbed his head and grinned. “You said bear ass.” He leaned against the wall again and his eyes drifted shut. “Enough!” Wade called from in the room. “Shut your mouths, all of you!”
So I really lagged in starting this series. I really thought it was going to be one of those series you read when you have nothing else to read (only because I've never read the author before the 1st book). Buuuut I read the first and was pleasantly surprised how much I did like it. Then I read the second and liked it even more. Slowly this became the series in would put down all others for. The best part of these books is the time Ms. Ladew takes to build these worlds and the characters. She slowly builds them up and before you know it you are emersed in this beautiful world unlike any others. Macs book has been my favorite, although I thought Rouge was an a$$. And really was Mac going to be given a mate we all fell in love with right away?.. No.. He needed a woman that could beat him at his own jerk game. And You do not like every person in the real world, right? So its OK I didn't like here at first. There comes a moment in this book where Rouge realized she has been being ridiculous and then we get to see the real Rouge. And I do like the real Rouge. Mac is different in this book. We get some insight as to why he is how he is. Now he has a best friend. Bruin and isn't he the dang cutest thing we've ever seen? He is so big and calm and happy but he is one of the most insightful characters in the series. This series is one that stays with you when you're done reading .. You go about your day and you think about Mac or Bruin or Cherise. You work out things that were in the story line and have to go back to read that "one part" .. Lisa Ladew has built on a world that is so beautiful and detailed that we cannot let go. She's captured beauty, pain, love and lust better that most authors out there and she's shared it with us. Thank you Ms. Ladew for inviting us into your world.
These two main characters are over the top assholes. We knew the MMC would be because he's been in the other books and she is a perfect female version of him. He deserves all the grief she gives him and it's actually interesting to watch them try to learn to not be mean.
The topic of consent is really well done. She is so automatically contrary, it was looking for a while there like she wouldn't be able to say yes to him even though she really wanted him. But even though he is so willfully insensitive with almost everyone, he's very clear that she has to say yes before anything physical will happen between them.
“Just one sign, Rogue, that’s all you need to give me. Just a nod of your head. Or one kiss on my lips. It can be as rough and fuck-all as you want it. I’m down with all of that. But you have to tell me yes.”
She even says no before taking it back and telling him yes. Both their personalities are like toddlers in some ways. But abusive upbringings will do that. The glimpse into the MMC’s past through his journals went a long way to explaining his personality better.
The bearmance is awesome. Bruin is hilarious and does a great job tempering the MMC’s meanness. Their rapport is goofy and sweet and awkward.
My favorite thought,
“It was easy to face off with a man. You yell a little, maybe you fight. You kick ass or you get your ass kicked, and then it was over. But with a woman? They stored mean shit up like acorns, always knowing exactly what to say at exactly the time it would hurt the worst. And even if they hit you, you didn’t hit them back. Even when they were tough or deserved it. You never won a fight with a woman, so the smart males didn’t even try. They stood there and took whatever the lady wanted to dish out, or they ran.”
Love this book...Rogue and Max story was amazing..💜💖💜 I hope the author doesn't mind me using a little bit of her highlight form her book..I Hope you Enjoy It!!! 💖💙💖
Finding Rogue’s sister was important to him, because it was important to her. It was that simple. Her heart opened. Bloomed. Love for him spilled out of it like water from an overflowing vase. He was sweet, funny, sexy, and could fuck, but that wasn’t why she loved him back. She loved him because of who he was, and who they were together, and who they would be tomorrow and the next day and the next, as they walked through life together, always having each other’s backs. Always being there for each other. She dug her fingernails into Mac’s arm until he stopped talking and looked at her. Her voice was soft, weak, and she tried to strengthen it. “I would think Wade would want us to go find her, since she’s a one true mate.” Mac’s eyes popped and she smiled, wondering what her sister looked like as an adult. They weren’t identical. Hadn’t even looked much alike at five, in her opinion. Mac leaned in close to her, holding her around her waist, and she was glad for his strength. “Are you telling me Amaranth is your twin?” She nodded. Mac pulled her close, tucking her into his side. “Bruin, go find Wade. Shit just got real.” Rogue looked around at her other sisters, talking happily, shooting her smiles, and wondered what Amaranth was going to make of all this. She couldn’t wait to find out.
This is book 5 in the series. Please read them in order so you know the characters and can follow the prophecy. There are cop shifters trying to find their one true mates, whom are 1/2 angles and fighting the evil Khain. Love, action, and laughs. Overview. Mac has had a hard time connecting to the other wolf shiften's. The only one he does seam to work well with is the odd man out their bear shiften Bruin. The create a bearomance instead of a bromance. But when Bruin (sees the future) tells Mac he will meet his mate at the rut but not in a normal way, Mac tries his best to find her before that happens. But even more, Mac soon find nods out that they have crossed paths several times in life. But Rouge doesn't want to give in to him. She has had to fight her way through life since she was 5. No way was she going to let a man have her, make her a wife, even worse make her have kids or pups. So the two have to fight it out. That is until Khain makes his presence in the world again.
Who ever would have thought Mac would be the calm one ever but when compared to his mate it seems he is. She's definitely going to need some work on the brain to mouth filter but I think Mac can help her with that...did I just write that?!...yes...yes...I did...Mac has really shown the side of him I always knew was there from book one in his story his soft side he was just using his grumpiness to hide hurt and to protect himself. He's still always going to be Mac that's never going to change always going to be a little twisted and have that hard give'um hell attitude but you got to see his soft side and I liked that! And Rogue was definitely made for him sure just as give'um hell as he is if not worse! But when you've had to walk through what they both have it changes you leaves it's scares ...they all have them...Mac and Rogues are just different from the rest of them.
Mac & Rouge are a great pair. Rogue, a Fated Mate with uncanny stealth powers with a crusty, onery wolfen cop who doesn't let go, or give up. But almost stealing the story from this fated pair is the bromance between Mac, a man who doesn't make friends, and Bruin, the Bearen firefighter turned wannabe cop. The comraderie, solidarity and hilarity between these two is captivating. Clearly, Bruin is a quirky, insightful, enigma who will make an impact of his own. Rogue grew up hard on the streets of Chicago. She's determined to stay free and independent of male entanglements, almost to extremes.. Mac is determined to simply convince her that he is hers. This story reflects Mac with insecurity and vulnerability when faced with Rogue's stubborness. It's a refreshing side to see of such a stoic male. A funny, yet exciting, story on this alternate Earth.
I’m going through this series in order. In my review of the previous book, I complained about how all the women were virgins before hooking up with their guys. So relieved that wasn’t the case in this book.
Rogue gives Mac a run for his money, although, my main complaint was that it wasn’t until the 50% mark that they actually met, and the 60% mark that they were together for any length of time. I mean, I get it, with this series the overall story is a strong connection, but with this one, it feels like it’s taking longer to maneuver the two together. It was worth it when these two finally met. I just wish a lot of the lead-up was shortened or folded more during their actual time together. Somehow.
I love Bruin the bear, and all the puns, but it started feeling more like a bro-bearmance than anything else. Maybe Mac should have asked Bru to join them? ;-) I’d have been happy with that!
Have loved every book in this series and they just keep drawing me in and keeping me wanting for more. This was a funny one and I found myself laughing out loud a few times throughout the book. Roe is quite the character. Strong and independent and very stubborn, rough and tough. She gives her poor mate a rough time and he's always there going back for more and pushing her.. Never saw the ending coming and now I can't wait for the next one. She always leaves us with and ending that draws you in and and then boom drops you to guess until the next one. Always well written and fun to read. Steamy good plot and characters flow from book to book so you don't loose touch with who they are. Excited to read the next in the series.
The longest book thus far and that worries me. Half the book is freaking detailed descriptions of Rogue breaking into places. At least Mac and Bruin are funny together. And omg the author has remembered Blake!!!!! Still doesn't get a book or barely any scenes but he's mentioned lol
I don't like Rogue. She keeps telling Mac how unforgettable he is yet SHE was the one that remembered him from 4 years prior lol I wish he'd call her on her childishness
"Notes by Lisa
This was my favorite book to date. I sincerely hope you enjoyed it. I busted my ass on it and gave it blood, sweat, tears, plus one incredibly long, shower-less week at the end, where I pulled five or six 16-hour days in a row. Something like that, it’s a blur."
Shoot now I feel bad because I didn't like Rogue until maybe the last two chapters lol she was unbelievably the most immature heroine.
I enjoyed the book mainly because of Mac and Bruin.......they are hysterical! But the story of Mac and his OTM, Rogue, wasn't all that exciting or interesting to me. Sure, Rogue had to become strong and super-independent because of her lousy upbringing, but it took 75% of the book for her to decide to sleep (not really sleeping) and as much as she seemed to like Mac, she still held back her feelings until the book was almost over. I just kept speed reading in the hope that something, anything, was going to grab my attention. But it pretty much never did.
Lisa Ladew's OTM5 heroine, Rogue, is perfect for Mac! He doesn't a sweet heroine. He needs a snarky, smart-mouth woman that can go toe to toe with him! Rogue is that woman! She makes Mac work for his one true mate. He is happy to. She transforms him and he transforms her. I loved this story. There is an HEA but there is a cliffhanger for the next OTM book 6 but not for Mac's and Rogue's story. Some might say that Rogue is to rough around the edges but that roughness is just what Mac needs to get smoothed out himself. He needs a woman that can kick his ass both in and out of bed! I highly recommend this book! You won't be disappointed!
This one was very good also. It was a little bit longer, but worth it! All I can say is that Rogue was definitely made for Mac. OMG, the things she says! This one was a little harder for me to read. It was VERY intense. I like knowing that there are many more to come, but now I am caught up with the series and will have to wait for the next one. Sigh...
If you like edgier romances with uber strong characters, intense emotions and situations, a well developed setting and some steamy scenes, then this series is for you. Start with number 1 and read up to this one (or beyond), then you will be eagerly awaiting the next book, too!
Another fantastic addition to the OTM series! My only problem is that I can't stand the female mate, Rogue. She might be the perfect foil and match to Mac, but I did not like her one bit. I felt for her situation, for all that she went through and lost. I rooted for her and Mac, simply because I was invested in Mac's happiness. I found no redeeming qualities in her personality or character. However, Lisa has written another great story that pulls you in, She makes you want these guys to have ALL that they deserve and desire. I love the relationship between Mac and Bruin, and I'm so looking forward to Bru's book next!
