My name is Brian Barr. I am a published fiction author. Along with novels and short stories, I've also written comic books, including the Empress series with Chuck Amadori. I am NOT the author of God's Plan for Us, written by some other Brian Barr.

My debut novel is Carolina Daemonic, Book I: Confederate Shadows. My second novel is Psychological Revenge: The First Super Inc. Novel, and I have a short story collection called Daemensions. All books are out now on Amazon, for Kindle and Print.

Carolina Daemonic is a dystopian alternative timeline urban fantasy-horror with LGBT, steampunk, and occult elements.

Psychological Revenge is a fun, campy superhero novel with zany villains and lots of action.

Check out my short stories, some of which are in anthologies, a few reprinted on Kindle for .99 cents.

The Head
By: Brian Barr
Narrated by: Rick Gregory
This is an audible book I requested and the review is voluntary.
This is a fun and crazy 'horror' story about a girl that finds a head in her deceased mother's garden and it talks! She doesn't know what to do with it and decides to take him home. She is lonely and he is abviously in trouble, they spend a great deal of time together and she falls in love with this head, err man. Like this wasn't weird enough, he then says he know where his body is....the horror part starts there. A short story but pretty darn good. Not scary but very clever.
The narrator is great, does the voices and feelings wonderfully. Great job!

I listened to this as an audiobook via Audible, and I have to say the audio performer really did a great job of sustaining the off-kilter vibe of the story. A woman finds a head in a garden, and the head starts to speak. She doesn't call 911, despite her initial freakout, and what develops between her and the head (who can talk, and drink, and seems otherwise pretty 'together' for a head without a body) is a relationship that might just spell doom.

The narrative voice of this short piece has a kind of drip-drip-drip of tension to it. It starts off weird, and almost a little silly at first, and the listener has at least a little amusement when considering the heroine (who isn't completely socially adept, and is, frankly, falling for a head). But that amusement fades into something that chills, then darkens and then, so gradually it's almost an unnoticed shock, steps right into a horrifying conclusion. I had no idea which way the tale would turn, and I enjoy that feeling when it doesn't feel like a cheap trick, and at no point did 'The Head' feel like a cheap trick.

So, if you're in the mood for something creepy, and atmospheric, give it a go.

Kind of a love story about a disembodied head

The Head is kind of a love story. Elizabeth falls in love with Bill, and hopes to live happily ever after. There are some complications, like the fact that Bill is a disembodied head who is struggling to remember how he ended up like that. The limits of Elizabeth’s love are tested.

This was a quick read, but it’s part of a trilogy. Also, how ‘bout that cover?

This is a solid book and I definitely recommend, it is not the best audiobook out there; but it is disturbing and entertaining to a point that prevents you from putting this story down. Now it is pretty short especially considering this is a trilogy at just over 5 hours long; but it was a good length for this particular tale. With that said lets talk about the STORY.

The first book, “The head” revolves around Elizabeth a antisocial woman that finds a head in her mothers garden, the head talks to Elizabeth and convinces her to take Bill home with her, where she falls madly in love with him. As weird as this sounds it only gets weirded as Bill convinces Elizabeth to take Bill to his body that is stored in his house in the attic. This don’t end to well for dear Elizabeth and this is where book 2 “The house” begins, with Alexis Bills sister looking for help from a retired Occult detective to help her recover her heart that is stored in the house of her and Bill, to help her escape, we get a bit more information on to this craziness and if you could not imagine it did not end to good for our detective, this is where Book 3 starts, the Hell. Here we meet Suzy who see spirits and goes on a mission to destroy the house and the evil family who have done so much damage, this was probably the strongest book of the 3 and delved deeper into this weird collection of stories and events.

It is weird and a bit jarring, its not perfect but I enjoyed the story and at the end that is all I expect from a story.

Rick Gregory is not the best narrator I have heard; but he did a good job, he was able to draw me into the story which is the most important job of a narrator, I did get characters mixed up from time to time which is not uncommon across narrators I have listened to; but I was impressed with his performance.

That leaves us with listenability, would I listen to this story again? At 5 hours long, this is a good bite sized story that I can see myself going through it again, I will probably leave this for Halloween or Friday the 13th occasions and will definitely share this with my friends and family again due to its weirdness.

I would give this book 3 and half stars it was above average and a book that is definitely worth checking out, I enjoyed the story and the weird place it took me.

Hats off to Brian Barr.... or should I say heads.

A short story of a talking head with a rather weird backround. Elizabeth finds out the hard way when she brings the head to its body.
A simple read but creative and so I must read on....This is part one of the trilogy.

From the title and cover art, I was expecting a horror story. It was definitely creepy but more comical. If you need a good laugh, this story will give you one! Very creative story by Brian Barr. Almost a romantic horror I guess. Loved the narration by Rick Gregory. This is my first time listening to him. Definitely enjoyed it!

They say that love comes in different shapes and forms, even in small packages, but what if it came in a severed head, a severed head that could speak? Would we run screaming away, or would we would listen? Would we melt against its pale, enchanting deep blue, forgetting that such a thing could not be possible and disappear into the southern tongues of past lives, traveling along until its darkest end, but what tragedy waits for us at the end of this dark and grisly tale? What evil have we allowed to seep in under the disguise of love, and as we fall deeper and deeper into the labyrinth of lies and illusion, what would we sacrifice to not escape but to save that love, a love that could condemn us and leave us forever in darkness, twisted and torn like the poor souls that have been fooled before. All this because we listened to The Head written brilliantly by Brian Barr.

So much fun!

I purchased this story because my Goodreads friends were talking about how much they liked it. I was so curious. A talking, drinking, alive head? LOL! I loved it!

What would you do if you found a lone human head in the yard? You’d probably do something practical, like dial 911 or bury it. What if that head started talking to you and begged not to be left alone? Yep. That’s the situation our heroine Elizabeth finds herself in.

This tale is equal parts horror, suspension, love story, and humor. First, it’s a decapitated head named Bill complaining about a headache. Ha! Poor Bill doesn’t have many memories but he does enjoy Elizabeth’s company. As time goes by, Elizabeth comes to care for Bill as well despite Bill’s off-putting odor.

Things move along as Bill insists they go in search of his body. More memories come back and Elizabeth is drawn into a twisted paranormal situation. Let’s just say that Bill comes from a messed up family.

It was fun and I wasn’t expecting so much humor nor the love story. Also, on a personal note, my husband’s name is Bill and I couldn’t help but picture his head as The Head in this tale. That just added to the enjoyment of this story, not that I want to decapitate the man. Just if he ever ends up in that situation, I’d like to think I would love him all the same. For such a short story, it was full of entertaining surprises.

I received a free copy of this book.

The Narration: Rick Gregory did a great job as Bill the detached head. He fluctuated between serious and caring, pleading and decisive, with ease. His character voices were distinct though I felt that Elizabeth could sound a bit more feminine without sounding slightly cartoony.

Definitely a spooky creepy twisted hor/romcom.

He's not a zombie (obviously- he's alive via his head).
And we learn some people can fall in love with what's in your head; a person's body doesn't count. ( So why go to the gym?! Lolz)
And we learn some people would do anything a give their left (or right?) arm - to be with the one they love.

Rick Gregory was FABULOUS as a narrator for this book/series.

I review ALL books I listen to or read but -

Wow. Okay so if the cover didn't draw my curiosity, the premise of a woman finding a severed head in the garden surely drew me in. This book was extremely well written and entertaining. It was a subtle journey into terror and despair that was the right length and well paced. Certainly looking forward to reading more works by Mr. Barr.

An excellent introduction to an emerging author. This is the first in a trilogy, but it is a self-contained story. A young girl finds a talking severed head on her front lawn (shades of Blue Velvet) which leads here into a surreal horror adventure.

"The Head" is a grotesquely humorous tale of an odd romance with some very dreadful complications. As charming as it sick, and very well-written, this short is certainly worth a read.

Usually for short stories they get 4 Stars, if perfect. Why? Because they are short, not too much on character development, good and get their point across in very little time. Just my own process. Every now and then though, I come across one that fits my 5 Star rules.

I don’t know this author, Brian Barr and never read anything by him before. Yet, I saw this cover floating around the Horror community. It made me laugh and I knew then I wanted to know, “The Head’s” story. What a story it turned out to be, which is a mix of dark humor, that catches you off guard as it turns terrifying with evil deceit. It’s short so I don’t want to spoil it for anyone, but this is a psychedelic “head” trip you definitely don't want to miss. “The Head” is a smooth talking, charmer, with wavy blonde hair and startling blue eyes. Those crystal blue ones that seem like they can look into your soul, almost hypnotizing. Before long I was falling in love, right along with the main character. That if “The Head” had asked me, I would have gone to the ends of the earth to find his body too.

Young Elizabeth is cleaning her deceased mother’s home and yard. To her shock, she sees a gruesome sight. It’s a “Head” lying amongst the weeds. She starts to turn to the house to call the police, but a voice yells out, “Where are you going”. She’s trembling as she looks at “The Head” that just spoke, thinking she is hallucinating. Before someone sees or hears she picks “The Head” up and brings it into the house. Now “The Head” looks at her from the sofa and says, “My name is Bill and I have a headache”. Okay, I am even laughing telling you this much. So, begins their bizarre and creepy love affair. I will tell you, “The Head” may be telling some fibs and hiding secrets from Elizabeth, but isn’t that all men. Lol…

Bizarre and Fun

It's like an episode of the Twilight Zone directed by David Lynch. This short story was well worth the price of admission. Barr's prose moves at a brisk pace in this genre-bending bizarro horror romance.

HA HA HA EXCELLENT, what a brilliant little short story.
Had never read anything from this Brian Barr feller but I kept seeing The Head floating ALL over my Goodreads feed, all my friends were reading it, so of course, I have to also.
I'm such a pack follower, had to check it and him out.
So glad I did. I read a ton of short stories and this would get my vote for one of the best written and most original (totally wacked out the head) tales.
Hands down, HEADS UP ~ no tails.

Not quite 40 pages, I couldn't put it down, the quintessential page turner.
Elizabeth is tinkering around in her mom's garden, she finds a severed head.
His name is Bill, he has a headache, and he doesn't really feel like talking about it.
Baffled yet fascinated, she decides to takes him home, to tend to his....condition, and over time they do end up talking about quite a bit, they have bunches in common and Elizabeth is just positively smitten, kind of wishes he was whole person though...

And that's it, I can't say anymore about the plot, it would be a HUGE insult to this writer and this ingenious ~ a cut above ~ razor sharp, morbid little tale.

The entire time I was reading and highly enjoying this, I couldn't help but think that the ending was going to be a bit of a let down or all cliched up or something.
IT'S NOT, the ending was a real jaw dropper and nothing my limited imagination even came close to picturing.
HOLY SHIT WOW, now this is how to write a short story, it's heads ~ sans shoulders, knees, and toes ~ above most.

It's so outlandish yet reads so straight up and absurdly palpable, tongue firmly in both cheeks but as if it's just...one of them thangs.
Brian Barr, such an easy going writing style with spot on comedic delivery.

I hear it was based off a dream he had....
Hmm...what's he smoking before bed??? Care to share?? :D :D

It looks like he has a handful of shorts, think I'll check out Show and Tell next about a creative writing student trying to better her story for her professor, make it...pop off the page....
Not sure, gonna check it out!!

Review originally published at: http://www.lomeraniel.com/audiobookre...

I have received a copy of this book in audio format from the narrator in exchange for an honest review.

While working on her deceased mother's garden, Elizabeth finds a man's severed head. When she was about to call 911 'the Head' starts talking to her and convinces her to not call the cops and take him inside. Elizabeth falls in love with 'the Head', and she sets her mind to find his body.

This is short story, just over forty five minutes long. It is a weird one, with a disturbing and creepy element of surprise. I found the premises quite original, and the execution was great, impregnating the tale of weirdness from every perspective. With such a strange story you expect something horrific to happen at some point, but this time it was much more than I expected. The images that this story evoked were crude, horrific and out of a nightmare.

While I think the premises and the final effect were greatly done, I am not completely convinced about the stuff in between. Elizabeth falls inexplicably in love with 'the Head'. True that Bill is charming with uncanny blue eyes, but he is just a severed head. I wonder about Elizabeth's background to be able to fall in love with a severed head. I think it would have been interesting to explore this too, as I am sure there is a reason for every dysfunctional relationship, and Elizabeth's story would have added another dimension to the book.

I like when the narration flows and does not interfere with the story. Rick Gregory did a very good job, accentuating Elizabeth's emotions and transmitting her feelings at all moments. Gregory also made clear distinctions between characters' voices without overdoing, which is something that I appreciate. There were a couple of time when I felt a longer than usual pause between a dialog and the tag just afterwards, but this is just a question of rhythm, and it was very very subtle. The audio production was correct.

I was impressed with this book, able to provoke strong reactions and with an original story. I think any horror fan would enjoy it, especially if they are into weird elements. Rick Gregory is a new narrator, but I foresee a great future for him. I am looking forward to his next book.
