4-1/2 stars! Navy Trent's life is turned upside down when she's mistaken for an influential senator's niece and is kidnapped by terrorists attempting to get the identities of CIA operatives. Her ability to escape and rescue her friends isn't the end of her ordeal, it's only the beginning. She knows more about what happened than she's supposed to and someone wants to keep her quiet. Maybe permanently. TRAP AND TRACE is a fast-paced, wild ride, part thriller, part suspense, part mystery. I wasn't sure I was going to like Navy in the beginning, but she won me over.

Plot
The book was expertly plotted. There were so many twists and turns, all of which were perfectly foreshadowed. I loved that I never knew what was going to happen next. Just when I thought I had it figured out, I was proven wrong. My only complaint is that there was a lot of repetitiveness, the same things being told from different points of view, that had me skimming portions.

Characters
I wasn't sure about Navy at first. She seemed almost too contrived, but as the story unfolded and I learned more about her, it became apparent that everything she did was well within her established character. I loved the entire cast, from Jackson, to Byron, to Erin. Even William came across as the total tool he was for completely plausible reasons.

What I Enjoyed About TRAP AND TRACE
1. Plotting. The plotting was among the best I've ever read!

2. Research. The author did her homework. The world of spies felt authentic and even something as simple as the right way to meditate was accurate.

3. Unexpected Twists. Kept me turning pages long after I should have gone to sleep.

4. Characters. Rich and complex, they drive the story in ways lesser characters couldn't.

5. The End. No spoilers, here, but it was perfect.

Bottom Line
Expertly plotted suspense with so many unexpected twists. Will be reading more by this author!

I wasn't expecting from the book, I was sure it will another government conspiracy thriller, where you can tell what will happen within first few chapters. And I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. :)

First few chapters in, I was totally hooked, and couldn't put the book down. The story is full of twist and turn, you can never really tell what will happen next. Another thing I really like, the details.

So we follow Navy, that is mistakenly kidnapped and CIA agents, that are working on the case. Not all is what it seems and people that should protect her, might just be the one to kill her. Navy has a past and is very resourceful, no damsel :). I really liked her character. Another favourite: Jackson, CIA agent involved in the case.

This was such an intense read. When I first started reading this I was pretty sure I knew where this was going. I had read the blurb and thought what it would be like. Boy, I was wrong!! This was a rollercoaster of turns and surprises that made me flipped through the pages. Such a fantastic mystery read.

Navy Trent and her friends had planned a safari and are flying to Africa via Amsterdam. At the Amsterdam airport, when they are going to transfer flights, they are all kidnapped under the belief that they are someone else. It all starts to spin when the kidnapping finally is over and Navy needs to convince the CIA that she doesn't know anything, and someone else is trying to push her into revealing what she knows.

Badass female character

I was pleasantly surprised with Navy and how brave and strong she becomes during the book. She starts as a normal tourist that is kidnapped on a trip together with her friends, and you could think that when fear strikes she would become insecure and try to hide. But when in the face of difficulties she becomes this amazing woman that is determined to fight and survive no matter what. It was amazing and interesting to see how resourceful she was and how she managed to do everything and come up with ideas on what she should do next.  I enjoyed when the author was explaining all the techy stuff that Navy was doing and why. I especially enjoyed when she put into practice what she had learned in her classes!

Though I understand why she did all the things she did and the way she did them, sometimes I just wanted to shake her to senses to try to do things another way.

Slow burning action

The book was full of twists and turns that kind of reminded me of a spy movie. The development was built in a slow pace action which may put off a little and sometimes it was as nothing was really happening. You were reading how Navy was training, going to work and preparing but no real action was taking place. Nevertheless, I found that in the whole development of the story the paced matched, as you needed to see how everything was falling into place.

Complex and astonishing plot

I had more than one surprise and unexpected twist. Though when the overall scheme was revealed I had pretty much guessed it as through out the story you are told bits and pieces. I must admit that there was a point in which I was confused with what was happening, though it didn't last long.

The whole conspiracy thing was really good and interesting to read. The most intriguing part was the power game that was behind it all.

In whole this was a fantastic and thrilling novel that I highly recommend.

I gave this book 3.5 stars out of 5 (rounding up to 4) for one reason – there were so many places in the book that it seemed like it was wrapping up. Maybe those were story arcs that were supposed to tie up and it just all went over my head. I don’t know.

That being said, did I enjoy this book? Yes! Definitely. There was a lot of technical info that really went over my head (Navy works with networks and computers so where a lot of the things she did sounded vaguely familiar just from listening to my husband talk, I didn’t really understand a lot of them). Not understanding exactly what network technique or computer part she was working with didn’t take away from the story, though.

I liked how we start out seeing the characters separate (you have Navy, Moss & Sara in one group and then Jackson and the rest of the CIA agents in another) and then, after the kidnapping, it all comes together. The only thing I was disappointed about here was that Sara and Moss just sort-of faded into the background. Once they come back to the US and start going about their lives again, you hear from them a few times, vaguely, but not much more. I understand the reasoning for them not being main characters, but I still would have liked more from them.

Would I read this one again (because that’s the real test of a good book, as we all know)? Yes, I think I would. There were definitely pieces I feel like I missed the first time around. And, like always (because I think I’m an addict), I would like to see a sequel to this one. I’d like to see where Navy, Jackson, and the others end up. Will there be a sequel? Probably not. The book wrapped up pretty well.

Had Trouble Putting This Down

The first Navy Trent book was an excellent intro to a very interesting character. The story was smart, well written, and gave us a tough protagonist. The technical aspects were beyond me but were impressive in their depth. I'll be reading the second installment for sure.
