Almost seventy-five years after it was written, the story of Mrinal’s struggle against stultifying social norms and her fierce individualism remain startlingly relevant.

शिक्षा : इनके मामा ने हस्तिनापुर में एक गुरुकुल की स्थापना की थी । वहीं जैनेन्द्र की प्रारम्भिक शिक्षा-दीक्षा हुई । सन् 1912 में उन्होंने गुरुकुल छोड़ दिया । प्राइवेट रूप से मैट्रिक परीक्षा में बैठने की तैयारी के लिए वह बिजनौर आ गये । 1919 में उन्होंने यह परीक्षा बिजनौर से न देकर पंजाब से उत्तीर्ण की । जैनेन्द्र की उच्च शिक्षा काशी हिन्दू विश्वविद्यालय में हुई ।
गतिविधियाँ : सन् 1921 से 23 के बीच जैनेन्द्र ने अपनी माता की सहायता से व्यापार किया, जिसमें इन्हें सफलता भी मिली । परन्तु सन् 23 में वे नागपुर चले गये और वहाँ राजनीतिक पत्रों में संवाददाता के रूप में कार्य करने लगे । जीविका की खोज में ये कलकत्ता भी गये, परन्तु वहाँ से भी इन्हें निराश होकर लौटना पड़ा । इसके बाद इन्होंने लेखन कार्य आरम्भ किया ।

“Those who live within society also carry the responsibility of keeping its structure intact. It
is their duty to ensure that only those who are the scrapings of society, or
want to become its cast-offs, should have the licence to experiment with
life. Pramod, it is true that Truth constantly expects new directions, but only
those whose lives hold no great value in society should venture or be
pushed into these new directions.”

Such a tearjerker i’ve read after quite a long time. Undoubtedly Classic hindi literature is one of the best out there when it comes to addressing uncomfortable topics like divorce, living away from husband while still in marriage, female independence (which did not much exist in india even after independence, though times have now changed), etc. these are still taboo subjects in india to some extent. But writers like premchand, nirmala verma and jainendra reminds us that revolution can also be started with a pen.

This complex story is essentially about the narrator, Pramod’s aunt who was (probably) caught in a scandal with her friend’s brother and was sort of casted off from the family via marriage. Even in her marriage, her virtues, her honesty and idealistic approach was met with harsh behaviour. While being a very short novel, this addresses a very significant issue of weighing a woman’s worth by her marriage and her competency to maintain it. Never the blame shall be put on men. This was a major issue in post and pre independence era in india and jainendra definitely nailed the portrayal in this heartbreaking novel.

Mrinal, a young girl who was once filled with such vivaciousness and energy, is now lost in the tyranny of majority. Society shapes us, and the way it does, we often make it our limitations. Anything beyond societal norms is crude. The Resignation, which was originally published as Tyagpatra in Hindi, explores the depth of human relationship and understanding in a society that governs its individual. It's suffused with philosophical contemplation. How I loved reading it! Such poignance, such brevity.

#72 - त्यागपत्र - जैनेन्द्र - Sanjeev Manohar Sahil के आग्रह पर यह उपन्यास पढ़ा। यह भी छोटी रचना है। जैसा बताया वैसा ही अतुलनीय उपन्यास निकला। भावनाओ से ओत- प्रोत जीवन के सत्य को ढूँढता हुआ यह उपन्यास मन को गहरे तक भेदता है।

Tyagpatra by Jainendra, translated from Hindi by Mridula Garg
This novel was painful to say the least. I want to start ranting about how the protagonist could have vastly changed her life.
But we are only readers , open to our judgements and critique. We want to apply practicality and logic in every situation.
One needs to separate these feelings while looking down a book.
Because jainendra’s prowess lies in crafting the silence as described wonderfully towards the end of this book. While premchand wrote about the society’s dark tribulations , jainendra asks you to introspect. At a glance, it seems to be repetitive self laceration. Almost a sick masochism.
Hold your horses..
Mrinal is idealistic , individualistic , unwavering , staunch , stubborn , loving
What about all these overlooked qualities ?
There must be a reason for this downtrodden path. This dead end.
Is it her suffocating childhood, is it a blink and miss of love, is it someone’s controlling attitude which can’t be undone .
Or is it the state of women as a whole - where marrying seems to be seen as a route to women’s upliftment? While this seems laughable in the current times, it’s still happening.
Jainendra’s book is urgent , it’s an outcry , it’s a message in a bottle.
Not all women will be Mrinal. Even the judge meting out justice couldn’t help her. How could you, Oh reader?
The dominoes are waiting to be tipped.

It's 2 AM and I just finished 'Tyagpatra' by Jainendra Kumar. I was going to read just a few pages before sleeping but once I started I couldn't stop and finished all 87 pages of the Hindi novel.

If I had read this book 4-5 years ago, I wouldn't have liked it most probably because I would have been unable to understand it.

I know it has been translated into many languages but any mature reader who can read Hindi, should read it in the original language. So beautifully written!

If someone has no biases, then that person would definitely like this book in one go. But a good book is one which shakes the foundations of your biases and makes you feel uncomfortable. And this book was really very good. ❤️

"जैनेन्द्र कुमार" द्वारा रचित "त्यागपत्र" बुआ और भतीजे की कहानी है। मृणाल का पालन पोषण उसके बड़े भाई करते हैं जो प्रमोद के पिता हैं। बचपन से ही दोनों बुआ और भतीजे में असीम प्रेम होता है।

कहानी की भूमिका : 

त्यागपत्र के द्वारा लेखक मानव जीवन के संघर्ष को दर्शाता है और स्त्रियों को किस किस परिस्थितियों में अपना जीवन व्यापन करना पड़ता है उसका एक अनूठा और अंत: करण को छलनी कर देने वाला दृश्य पाठकों के सामने प्रस्तुत करता है। बहुत संक्षिप्त में कहूँ तो मृणाल छोटी सी अवस्था में अपनी सहेली ( शिला ) के भाई से प्रेम कर बैठती है। एक चंचल लड़की जो हँसमुख होती है उसकी हँसी गुम जाने की दास्ताँ है त्यागपत्र। बड़े भाई की पत्नी को शायद इसका अंदेशा हो जाता है और नतीजा निकलता है चट मगनी बट ब्याह। मगर कभी मृणाल का मन नहीं लगा और उनकी हालत ख़राब रहने लगी। मृणाल ससुराल छोड़ मायके आ गईं। यहाँ की परिस्थिति भी ऐसी थी कि जल्द से जल्द मृणाल को उसके बड़े भाई सामाजिक दबाव के कारण ससुराल जाने के लिए मनाने लगे। मृणाल का भाग्य देखिए एक तो अव्वल की सुंदर ऊपर से ससुराल में सबसे बड़ी सजा मिली जब पतिव्रता धर्म के पहले नियम का पालन करने की ठानी उन्होंने - इनाम था घर निकाला।

1-कितना दुर्लभ कार्य है किसी पति के लिए ये सुनना कि मेरी भार्या विवाह से पहले किसी और से प्रेम करती थी। इतना छोटा दिल और इतनी छोटी सोच के मर्द इतने आगे निकल गए हैं कि समाज उन्हें पलकों पर बैठा रहा है और उनके संकुचित मन को महान और मर्यादित बताने की भूल कर रहा है। जब तक लड़की सुंदर है उसके तन के लाखों ख़रीदार हैं और ऐसा ही एक व्यक्ति मृणाल को मिलता है जो अपनी पत्नी को छोड़ कर उसके साथ कोयले के बाज़ार में कुछ समय के लिए उसे पालता है या यूँ कह लीजिये हर रात उसके ज़िस्म को चख कर अपनी प्यास तृप्त करता  है। पराया धन ज़ियादा देर तक नहीं रुकता वो अपने घर अपने बीवी बच्चों के पास लौट जाता है। मृणाल का सहारा कौन बने, बड़े भाई ने सुध नहीं ली, भाभी को चिढ़ है उससे, मृणाल से इतना प्यार है प्रमोद का कि मृणाल उसे अपने पास नहीं आने देती। अंततः समाज के सबसे निचले तपके के लोगों में वैश्याओं के मध्य मृणाल अपना जीवन व्यतीत करती है और दम तोड़ देती है। 

उपन्यास को क्यों पढ़ें -:

1- इस पूरी कहानी में जिस तरह से समाज के हर परत को टटोलने और उसका नंगा सच रखने का काम किया है लेखक ने वो सराहनीय है। मृणाल के द्वारा लिखे पत्रों को पढ़ कर तो आँखों में ख़ून उतर आता है और मन करता है इस समाज की धज्जियाँ उड़ा दी जाएँ। मृणाल लिखती हैं " यहाँ का लाभ- तुम पूछोगे।  लाभ बहुत है। यहाँ किसी को ये कहने का लोभ नहीं है कि मैं सच्चरित्र हूँ। यहाँ सच्चरित्रता के अर्थ में मानव का मूल्य नहीं जाना जाता। दुर्जनता ही मानो क़ीमती है" और जिसे समाज का जूठन कहते हैं उनके उस जगह के बारे में आगे लिखती हैं मृणाल " यहाँ छल असंभव है। बर्बरता को लाज का आवरण नहीं चाहिए। मनुष्य यहाँ खुल कर पशु हो सकता है। जो नहीं हो सकता उसकी मनुष्यता में बट्टा समझा जाता है। जो बाहर हो वही भीतर हो। भीतर पशु हो तो इस जल वायु में आकर बाहर की मनुष्यता एक क्षण नहीं ठहरेगी। मनुष्य हो तो भीतर तक मनुष्य होना होगा"। और हम कहते हैं दरबारों में सच बिका करता है।
सोचिएगा कभी ?

2- लोगों के प्रति ईमानदार रहना और जितना किसी ने आपके लिए किया है उसे उतना चुका देना। एक संदर्भ है कहानी में जब मृणाल अपने भतीजे से कहतीं है कि भूख से मरना पड़े तो मैं मर जाऊँ, पर सोच विचार कर अपराध कैसे कर  सकती हूँ। रूप के लोभ के कारण उस व्यक्ति ने मेरी सहायता की, मुझे मरने से बचाया अपने घर को बीवी बच्चे तक को छोड़ दिया तो क्या मेरा फ़र्ज़ नहीं बनता मैं उसके लिए उसके साथ रहूँ। स्त्री की व्यथा देखिए उसे मालूम है पुरुष पर रूप का, शृंगार का नशा चढ़ा है और अगर वो उसकी सहायता नहीं लेगी तो वो ख़ुद को मार देगा या ख़ुद मृणाल को। यहाँ कृतज्ञता भी है और लाचारी भी। ऐसे अनेक बिंब मिलेंगे जहाँ आप रो देंगे और समाज और स्त्री के प्रति होने वाले दुर्व्यवहार को नज़दीक से देख पायेंगे।

3-आत्ममंथन - प्रमोद जो आज जज के कुर्सी पर विराजमान हैं किस परिस्थिति में त्यागपत्र देते हैं इस कहानी में इस पात्र का कितना अहम योगदान है। बचपन से लेके जज बनने तक के सफ़र में मृणाल ने किस तरह अपना सब कुछ न्योछावर कर दिया लेकिन अपनी परछाई तक प्रमोद पर नहीं पड़ने दी ये उसकी महानता नहीं है तो क्या है ? 

त्यागपत्र के आप 100 वजह निकाल सकते हैं या शायद 1000 पर क्या इस त्यागपत्र से मृणाल की ज़िंदगी वापस आ सकती है और क्या समाज में स्त्रियों को लड़कियों को अपने ढंग से जीने की आज़ादी मिल सकती है ?

त्यागपत्र की समीक्षा लिखते हुए समझ नहीं आ रहा है किसको महान बताऊँ प्रमोद को या मृणाल को। उस इंसान को जिसने रूप के लालच में मृणाल के साथ कुछ समय बिता कर उसे ज़िंदा रखा या समाज के उस जूठन को जिसके पास भले पैसा और सम्मान न हो परन्तु दिलों में असीम स्नेह और मानवता की कद्र होती है।  त्यागपत्र उन रचनाओं में से है जो दिल में त्रिशूल खोप देती है और आप को अपनी हदों का आभास तो होता है पर हल नहीं मिलता। सामाजिक बंधनो में रहते हुए समाज के पिछले और निचले तपके के लोगों से प्रेम करना और उन्हें मानव समझना ही त्यागपत्र की कहानी का सार है।

प्रेमचंद के सेवादन जैसा आदर्शवादी अंत नहीं बल्कि खौफ़नाक दर्द भरा अंत हैं त्यागपत्र का। वहाँ मियाँ और बीवी मिलकर सेवासदन की शुरुवात करते हैं और यहाँ मृणाल अपनों से दूर दम तोड़ देती है। यहाँ प्रमोद उनके लिए उस तपके के लिए कुछ नहीं करता पर जज के पद से त्यागपत्र ज़रूर देता है। वहाँ सुधारवाद है यहाँ आत्मग्लानि।

A powerful story about a girl mirnal and how her life changes when she is married without her desire and how her uncompromising idealism results in her family and society rejecting her, but she stands on living by her principles that leaves her to live a difficult life. The story is narrated by her nephew pramod. It's a book translated from Hindi. I've not read Hindi literature books before. This is my first. One of the underrated novel. I'm glad I found it. It's a small read and can finish it it in one sitting.

त्यागपत्र एक बुआ-भतीजे के अनूठे रिश्ते की मार्मिक कहानी है। प्रमोद और मृणाल यूं तो बुआ-भतीजे थे पर उम्र में फैसला काम होने के कारण एक ही घर में भाई-बहन और दोस्त की तरह पले-बड़े थे। प्रमोद ने मृणाल के वैवाहिक एवं बुढ़ापे के चरणों को दूर होकर भी बहुत करीब से देखा था। समाज की नजरों में भले ही मृणाल एक निकृष्ट जीवन व्यतीत कर रही थी पर उसी जीवन में प्रेम और ईश्वरीय संगीत देखा प्रमोद ने। इस कहानी की मेरी सबसे पसंदीदा पंक्तिया है:
“जीना एक बार शुरू करके मौत आकर छुट्टी न दे दे, तब तक जीना ही होता है।”

“जीवन में एक बात तो नहीं दसियों बातें है । वे जी में ऐसी जगह बैठ गई है कि घुमड़ती रहती है । उन पर आँखे मींचू, तो भी नहीं मिच सकती। वे मेरे भीतर अनुकूल वायु में कभी - कभी एसी सुलग आती है कि उनकी लौ के प्रकाश में मैं देख उठता हूँ कि सच्चाई क्या है । तब मेरी जजी मुझे शाप दिखती है और जान पड़ता है वही प्रवंचना है । सच्चाई तो छोटा बनने में है । बलि बनने में है । बहुत - कुछ देखा है, बहुत - कुछ पढ़ा है ; लेकिन वह सब झूठ है । सच इतना ही है कि प्रेम के भार से भारी रहकर जो जीवन के मूल में पैठ है, धन्य है । जो गर्व में फूला उस जीवन की फुनगियों पर चहक रहा है, वह भूला है।”

“इन लोगों में, जिन्हें दुर्जन कहा जाता है, कई तह पार कर वह तह भी रहती है कि उसको छू सको तो दूध सी श्वेत सदभावना का सोता फूट निकलता है। इससे यह प्रतीति मेरे लिए उतनी कठिन नहीं रह गयी है कि सबके अभ्यन्तर में परमात्मा है और वह सर्वान्तयार्मी है।”

‘प्रेम’

प्रेम ही शायद इस उपन्यास का मूल है। इसके अनेक स्वरूप भी इस उपन्यास में गूंथ कर लेखक एक अनोखी सी लगने वाली कथा सामने रख देता है। 

प्रेम और समाज़ हमेशा से अलग ही रहें हैं। दोनों ने अपनी अपनी राह चुनी और एक दूसरे के विरुद्ध बहते रहे। पर उनका क्या जो सामाजिक मूल्यों में होकर भी प्रेम कर लेते हैं। ये समाज उन्हें नहीं अपनाता, मृणाल को भी नहीं अपनाया गया। वो जीवन भर अपने मूल्यों और प्रेम का द्वंद्व झेलती रही। समाज में रहकर भी उपेक्षित हुई और उसके बाद भी उन मूल्यों को न छोड़ सकी। 

ये कैसी विवशता है? 

क्या हम सब कहीं न कहीं इसी विवशता से नहीं घिरे हुए हैं!

क्या समाज का ढांचा इतना कठोर है कि प्रेम के पनपने की जगह उसमें नहीं है?

एक लड़का जो बस ये चाहता था कि उसकी बुआ जिसके साथ उसने बचपन गुजारा है वो सुखी रहें, शायद वो कोशिश भी करता है पर उसकी बुआ जानती थी कि वो कभी समाज से लड़ कर समाज में नहीं रह पाएगा। यही कारण था कि वे उसकी सहायता बहुत कहने पर भी नहीं लेती। 

एक व्यक्ति यदि अपनी इच्छा से रह लेगा तो ये समाज टूट जाएगा क्या? 

क्या इतना कमजोर है ये समाज जिसमें हम रहते हैं? 

क्या इसकी नींव हिलाने को बस एक ही प्रहार काफी है? 

यदि हां! तो ये एक सफल समाज नहीं है। 

ये व्यक्ति की स्वतंत्रता है हनन है, उसके जीवित रहने के अधिकारों का हनन है!

I haven't read a book that passed by as quickly as this but burnt my heart such! I felt the torments of both sides of the story. I felt the pain and sorrow of our world. Many stories have been written on outcast women, on love, marriage, family and society but nothing has been written this well. In the afterword of the book it says "Restraint was the essence of his craft and the philosophy underlying it" and I agree a cent percent. The way Jainendra used silence in his story was heart wrenching beyond limit. His perspective and stand point from various characters of the story was commendable. Haven't I ever felt the pain and nuances of the all the characters in the story. Hands down to his writing style, to his backdrops, to his fine planning on the progress of the story and his expression. I am in complete awe and can't yet get over it.

Short poignant read on emotions, traditions and the humans caught in its web. How the sanctity of relationship is tested on the scales of time and tradition!
Mrinal, the bua's failed love and failed marriage turns her world upside both materially and morally(debatable). Her bhatija Pramod Whois also the narrator of the story is very attached to her and feels deeply about the change in her situation, although at first due to his young age he is unable to follow its trajectory. But his love and resolve towards Mrinal is tested through parental orders, everyday growth (education,friends) and Mrinal's own reluctance to fight against societal blame and expectations of her. And it is the last thing that grasps his weakness (money) and exposes the hole in his benevolent intentions and breaks the fragile bond between them

Oh, how much I loved this book. Though this book was written when India was still obsessing over it's maan maryada culture, it to this date holds the same significance.
It's difficult to tell the truth and what's more difficult is to digest it. Truth once told can have the worst repercussions.
The book touches the finer points of human emotions at the lower end of the society and how the lower one goes their pretensions they shed. It has a lot of philosophical musings and the last part of the book was one that left me thinking.

Also a special mention to the translator - a job well done.

I took my time reading this short book and I'm glad of it.

It's fascinating - how books can get you close to someone even when you're living in different times and in different continent and speaking different language.

1937. 2022. 85 years had passed since this book was written and still, I could understand Mrinal's pain. It's universal.

Society and family. Love. Kindness.

Some thing never change. Or they change very slowly.

This novel is written so beautifully it is probably one of the few hindi novles I've read which has the capabiity to pull every string of my heart and make it hurt everytime I read it. Pramod and his aunt's relationship is articulated beautifully and it made me realise how love can be moulded in so many forms and how some people in your life make you realise its value by different means even if it hurts them the most.

HOW MUCH EMOTIONS, MYSTERIES, मजबूरियां, प्रेम, जीवन मर्म ETC. EVERY GREAT WRITTEN STORY CARRIES WITH IT. मृणाल जैसी कितनी स्त्रियों ने अपनी जिंदगी बेगुनाह होते हुए भी, समाज की वजह से अपराधी बन काटी है। THIS MRUNAL CHARACTER MADE ME TO GO THROUGH MY PAST AND THE UPCOMING FUTURE AND IT'S CHALLENGES. I HAVE MY SYMPATHY WITH EVERY MRUNAL LIKE PERSON EXIST ON THIS PLANET.

what a beautiful little gem
there are so many hidden gem in Hindi literature. heart ranching story of relationship between a lady her nephew. the letter written in the end by Minal will brought tears to your eye. the small novel ( 86 pages ) brings out all the difficult but everyday question a noraml human being faces. why things happens the way they happens.. - no answer..

पहली बार जैनेंद्र कुमार को पढ़ा। बहुत सुंदर लेखन शैली में लिखा गया यह उपन्यास अंततः सतही ही प्रतीत हुआ। कथानक की मुख्य किरदार- मृणाल के साथ न तो कोई जुड़ाव महसूस हो पाया न ही उसके क्षोभ का कोई अनुभव। कारण रहा उसका काफी एक-आयामी चरित्रनिर्माण।
ऐसा लगा मानो उसका अपने जीवन पर कोई नियंत्रण न हो। बिना मांझी की नाव की तरह लहरें जिस ओर ठेल दीं, बस वहीं की हो गई।
और सबसे अधिक आश्चर्य की बात यह है कि जो लड़की आजीवन दुख झेलती है, सहारा ढूंढ़ती है, वह अपना जीवन निर्वाह करने में सक्षम थी।
फिर क्यों लेखक ने उसे इतनी बेचारी बनाया?

हंसमुख स्वभाव का इंसान किस कदर बदल जाता है, सोचना ही बेहद कठिन है। मृणाल की कहानी पढ़कर हमारे पास सिर्फ आंसू बहाना ही रह जाता है।

What a book!!!! One of the best Hindi books I’ve read this year. The characters, the situations, all are very tightly knit in the story. A true masterpiece by the author.

Tyagpatra isn’t just a novel—it’s a mirror, a confession, a quiet scream muffled under layers of duty, morality, and love that dares not speak its name.

There’s a sharpness to Jainendra Kumar’s writing—clear, crisp, never indulgent. Every sentence feels like it’s been carved out with precision. But what really stunned me was how personal it felt. This doesn't read like fiction. It feels like someone handing you pages torn straight out of their diary, still warm with shame, longing, and unspoken truths.

This book reminded me of what Indian literature can be. Realist. Unapologetically philosophical. Rooted in emotional and ethical dilemmas instead of the glittery, feel-good romance tropes that plague so much of today’s writing. There’s no hawa mahal here. No sugarcoating. Just people—flawed, principled, quietly breaking.

“Those who belong in society must also maintain it, that is their duty. Only those who are outcasts and prefer to be outcasts, are exempt from that duty. Only they have the privilege of experimenting with life. Truth demands these experiments, Pramod, but they can only be carried out by and on those who no longer have much social value.”

In Jainendra Kumar’s novel The Resignation (Tyagpatra in the original Hindi), it is clear from the beginning that Mrinal, Pramod’s aunt, doesn’t belong in society. She was orphaned as a child and was taken in by Pramod’s parents. As custom demanded, the family found a match for her and got her married. She was against it but was mostly helpless given her social milieu. Later in life, she finds herself alone, and in poverty, but independent.

This book is a deeply poignant portrait of a woman fighting for her place in the world, and I was blown away by Jainendra’s writing. Spare, with not much heightened emotions, Jainendra tells Mrinal’s story in a matter-of-fact way, making it doubly impactful.

In fact, the style is an effective mirroring of Mrinal’s personality. Mrinal is spunky at times but her courage is not enough to overcome the hurdles society throws at her. She was too far ahead of her times. Pramod, who is very close to her, tries to support her in some ways but Mrinal fends him off because the ‘help’ she wants “is strength--to enable me to remain whole beneath the lash of the oppressor, and to take upon myself the burden of his sin in addition to my own, praying forgiveness for all the world. Why should I seek for respectability? I must find my solace in whatever comes.”

Mrinal doesn’t indulge in self-pity, nor does she berate the world around her. She simply accepts her lot and tries to stay strong in the way she things she can. Mrinal’s struggle with social norms and for independence are topics all too familiar and extremely relevant even today, nearly 7 decades later. Her high self-awareness, intelligence, and approach is extraordinary, and even more so for the time when the novel was written, in the 1950s.

Rohini Chowdhury’s translation is excellent and, I think, retains the colour and impact of the story.
Mrinal would have been a striking force then and today. And thus, Jainendra by extension.
