Once upon a time, in a faraway land called Terlain...
A beautiful nymph-turned-warrior had a terrible choice to make.
Two years ago, Aries fell in love with her best friend Claire's brother, and soon after, he left her in the dust. Now he's back. But in a world that's been turned upside down, and for a girl whose heart has turned to stone, is there any place left for happily ever after? On the eve of the final showdown in a brutal world war, Aries will face her deepest fears and insecurities to be victorious-or die trying.
I read this book a couple of months ago. Really I should have reviewed it at the time, but you know how it is, life creeps up on you!
Minor niggles first -
First niggle - it jarred on me slightly that the main character was a female named Aries. Not a big deal I suppose, but as I've studied Classical Civilisation in the past, plus I'm a huge fan of Xena Warrior Princess, I associate it with being a very male name. Perhaps that's the point though, as it's clear right from the start that this is a no-nonsense sort of lass. She's a member of the guard patrol and is quickly established as being pretty tough, so I assume that's where the author was going with naming her Aries. It's just that I have a big muscly dude in my head when I hear the name Aries.
Second niggle - a few punctuation errors. I don't mean just typos, I mean that almost every single spoken sentence within quotation marks was ended with a full-stop, but then the following word after the quotation marks began with a lower case letter. E.g.
"You mean if there's nobody left to rescue." she sighed
Now it didn't ALWAYS happen, but it was pretty prominent through the book. I guess everybody has their pitfalls though (heaven knows I have many of my own - my own work is far from perfect).
Third niggle - In .pdf for there were a few formatting errors, for example at the end of page 18 (page numbers added to the pages would have been useful), the words are spaced out oddly on the last line of the page. Making an e-book without formatting errors is ludicrously difficult.
That's the minor niggles out of the way, now to the book itself. I really enjoyed it, and despite my pretty pedantic gripes above, the book is well written, and the niggles are easily overlooked. I really felt the characters were well rounded, and the author has great descriptive skills. She included enough background history to the world and the characters so that you really felt you knew the personalities of the people you were reading about.
Both Claire and Aries were pretty dynamic females, and the friendship between them was well written about. The attraction between Aries and Aranu had me gripped as well.
All in all a very readable enjoyable novel by a writer who really makes the reader engage in her created fantasy world. I would be happy to recommend Shadow Borne to other readers interested in this genre.
Shadow Borne is technically the third book in the shadows series, but focuses on Aries and her place in the world of Terlain. Aries needs to fight off a horrible evil that everyone thought was defeated and gone, but they were seriously wrong. It only has grown becoming more horrific and cruel as it wipes out all in its path with it's focus on Aries and Claire, wanting nothing more than to finally wipe them from the world. As for heroines Aries is a smart ferocious nymph warrior who has no fear in whats coming. She's more than ready to take the fight to the Shadows and their followers. Claire is Aries best friend and is a sassy mom and best friend at this point, but still can hold her own. All of the characters are well fleshed out and have a purpose, there really arent any useless people wandering around. This is a great urban fantasy, I'd definitely recommend.
