A cautionary tale of wilful compliance, the failure of moral certitude and the crypto-musical magnum opus of the seventh wonder of the world of OXBOW, THE THIN BLACK DUKE.
A superb collector item. Rich in reflection, description and a grounded sense of the band's past and present, it's a must-have for diehard fans.
The contributions from each band member make for predictably insightful material, and with Dan Adams and Niko Wenner in particular, a fascinating look at a few musical facets of the book's companion album in welcome specificity.
Greg Davis provides perhaps the most interesting take on the recording process; a hefty task at 10 years, not everything he says is entirely positive, but his honesty adds sizeable credibility to the book which is otherwise written with a respectable and well-deserved sense of confidence in the group's own work.
Beautifully presented with meticulous design and stunning photography, the book is also embellished by lyrical passages, as well as some heartfelt contributions from friends, fans (including yours truly!) and colleagues of an utterly unique band, and one that is clearly special to those who have been truly moved by their music, tireless discipline and remarkable attitude.
