Mercy #5

Wraith

Rate this book
It was a new world to which we were confined because of a bargain I’d made with Death himself: no paradise for Luc and the exiled, and none for me.

But the moment I made my choice, I was marked for sacrifice, as was Ryan. A price was settled; a debt, escalated.

Time. There would never be enough.

It’s been two years since Gia Basso witnessed archangels and demons waging war upon each other beneath the dome of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele in Milan. Traumatised, Gia has been in self-imposed exile on the English coast.

But the sudden reappearance of Mercy in her life, in a new and terrifying incarnation, draws Gia into a desperate struggle to locate Lucifer — who holds Ryan Daley captive in order to keep him from Mercy, his beloved, forever.

Tasked by the archangels to destroy Lucifer, and by Mercy to help her trace and free Ryan, Gia is pushed to the limits of human endurance as she traverses the earth — with the help of friends old and new — to do the impossible.

For Lucifer and his demons have discovered a new way to move freely in the human world. And Mercy and Gia must bargain with the Archangel of Death himself, Azraeil, to get what they want.

Wraith is the fifth dark, thrilling and genre-defying instalment of the much-loved Mercy series from the acclaimed author of The Astrologer’s Daughter.

Beautifully written as always. Compelling in an almost otherworldly sense.
I feel like I can't really write a review in case of spoilers but if you enjoyed the previous novels then you'll love this one.

It's taken me a while to come back and write a review for this. I've had to take a few days to digest it. I've got books waiting to be read... But I can't bring myself to start them. Finishing this book is like finishing the world's best pizza, like going through a bad breakup, like having the world's best holiday, finishing a game... No, hang on, let me start that again.

A few months ago, I finished, why I think, was the world's best video game, dying light. I lived it. I had all the dlcs, finihed the entire game not just the main mission. I even went out and bought it again when they released dying light: the following enhanced edition. And God DAMN was it amazing. When I finished it, it was like I had lost some vital part of me. As if I was lost. I was genuinely sad... I was not interested at all in any other game and I didn't play my ps4 for a good few months because u was so depressed about the lack of games that had the story, depth and meaty parts parts hat dying light had... Sure there were other games, and I've played a few decent ones... But nothing COMPARED to dying light. There was a dying light sized hole in my life that no game could fill. So imagine my absolute delight when I found out that the creators were releasing another 10 free DLC's...

That's what this whole series is like. That what wraith is like.

I first picked up Mercy when I was working at borders (loved that job, every bookworms dream) all I remember at the time was the cover. It was blue with blue metallic spots and the sun burning through the windows caught it on such an enticing angle... I remember the cover looking so beautiful. I'd never seen anything like it and I was so enthralled with it. I couldn't take my eyes off it. I picked it up and stashed it to buy after work.

I think I finished it in a day. It was so damn good.

Thank God Rebecca write another four after that, because only one would not have sufficed. I had an insatiable appetite, and thankfully the next book always left me satisfied until the next one was released.

However, it was always a hunger that never really went away...i was always hungry. So imagine what I was like when I found out wraith was on its way...

I was salivating.

And goddamn...this did not disappoint.

It was interesting to read this book from another perspective. The shift away from mercy to a mere mortals view somehow just clicked. Every part of this book was the perfect balance of different points of view. And action.

It did not let up. Let me just say, I'm jealous of Jamie's skills. Girlfriend is resourceful and I love it. I love her character growth through this. It wasn't forced, it felt natural given the circumstances. The fact that death is her angel... I want to know more about that little tidbit.

What they made mercy into... Shit. Girl is a motherfucking BAD BITCH. I love it. If I ever wanted to be a weapon or someone to aspire to... She's it.

Did I mention this book just doesn't let up. Doesn't let you breathe. It's a ride from the first word, and I found myself trying to turn the pages faster than my fingers would allow. It's a read, it's a journey, and it doesn't let up until the last paragraph...

And then...

Here I was thinking, this is it, I'm finally going to have my fill of this series and get rid of that never-quite-full feeling..

And then...

'help me!'

WHAT?! are you serious right now? No. How could you leave it at that?! I kept looking through the back of the book, hoping that an epilogue would appear...

No dice.

The ending for me, was like having the world's best meal, and the waiter clearing it before you were finished. And it leaves you with two questions. Is that it or is there more coming?

I want more to come.

And I loved your scribbles Rebecca. Thank you.

It has been a wait to find out what happened after the events of Fury. I will keep this review deliberately vague and free from spoilers so you can enjoy for yourself, but suffice to say that I was drawn right back into Mercy's world. It was fascinating to follow Gia's journey to find personal redemption and her efforts on Mercy's behalf. Lim's writing is fluent and brings a shiver to the spine. She leaves the door a little open for further adventures...bring them on!

I absolutely loved this book. The plot is so unexpected but makes perfect sense given the earlier books. For me, this fifth story put the previous stories into a context with such a satisfying climax. So gripping and I just love Gia and Mercy.
