Sometimes, in order to live you have to die first. Jon Ryan has met and won many insurmountable challenges. Now he faces one he never expected and seems unable to master. All the fighting, all the death, and all the suffering are changing him. He's growing darker and less human with each passing crisis. Will he become the emotionless machine he is housed in? The dark forces of The Berrillians are relentless. Having lost the technological war to The Alliance, they revert to guerrilla tactics. They threaten to terrorize the galaxy into submission. It's a game they are very good at. With no relief in sight, humanity turns once again to a weary Jon Ryan for answers. He develops a plan, but if it succeeds it's brutality threatens to push him over the edge. Jon must answer the question as to whether survival is worth his soul?
I claim three great accomplishments in my life: my family, my medical career, and my writing. They are in, I am certain, their proper order. My family, includes my perfect wife Karen, my wonderful children (adults now) Chris and Kim, my sweet grandson Jonathan. And now you! From family, I draw strength, love, and meaning. What humbling gifts. I am almost as proud of my incredible career as a physician (no, not that I'm incredible, it's that the journey was). I'm an Internest and have worked in ER's, hospitals, clinics, homes, and most places between. What a rush! When I say it's an honor and a privilege to be a doctor, I truly mean it. My writings, provide me a powerful creative outlet and so warms my soul directly. In my wilder dreams, I hope my writing is of sufficient merit and so benefit you too in an impactful manner. Know me by what I love: Dickens, Orwell, and Bradbury; Milton, Donne, and Blake; Coltrane, Davis, and Desmond; Picasso, Michelangelo, and Renoir; Astronomy, Biology and Geology; Doctor Who, Star Trek (original TV), and Doctor Who (yeah, I love it that much); Avedon, Doisneau, and Arbus; burger and fries, coc au vin, and pizza-pizza-pizza. Have I left anything important to me out? Just one, the most important: God. I'm an ex-Catholic wondering if churches are device of men and are necessary at all. More importantly, I wish I spent more time seeing His wonder in the world (I'm not evangelizing, just passing along info; this is a bio, n'est pas?). Oh, and this has never come up, but there used to be a series of magazine ads where sexy looking people were asked a series of questions about what they liked. A standard query was: "What's your favorite word?" So, this really stuck with me (I know, I need to get out more, don't I) and now I can tell someone, you, my favorite word. Oneself! I love it. It means 'on your own' right, but it also refers to the elf you own! Brilliant word. Now, where'd I put that elf.......
I have finished the series, in slightly less time than it took the author to write it. The final book managed to achieve a low unmet by its predecessors in being entirely boring and unmemorable. However, that didn't stop it being riddled with errors, inconsistencies and lazy writing.
On careful reflection, there were some likeable characters, some interesting concepts and some decent sci-fi, but none were sufficient, or original enough, to overcome the glaring issues. This felt like a low effort money grab throughout.
Enjoyed the series for a light heart funny Sci Fi series for what it is . However the last book in the series was hoping for more after the previous books in the series found this one to be least favorite . Overlooking the wholes in the story especially why there advanced tech couldn't be used on the ground it was still an enjoyable quick read with a few funny moments some of the most funny when the Jon Ryan and his son visited the donuts alien world the banter back and forth between Jon Ryan , his son and the alien made me laugh out . Series is defiantly worth a read for a quick light sci fi series
I Truely enjoyed the series. I thought the 6 series books were very enjoyable! I loved the continuity of the series and loved the tales! I would recommend the 6 series to any Sci Fi fan! I urge caution that new fans start the series with book number one and promise that anyone who enjoys a good tale, will like the series! I wondered how it would end and liked the end!
Robertson does a great job building the plot in this book, and everything ties together. Though artificial, the main character has traits just like a human, and his feelings are well thought out. The end of the book took me a little by surprise. But like the entire series, I liked it. Very thought out, very circular.
A good series ending. Of course, I knew there were something like 15 more books to go in the Ryanverse. And all included with Kindle Unlimited. This is the type of series that grows on you as we see Jon grow. Eventually spending some time in this universe is familiar and comforting.
Finishing off the last nightmare Jon and crew have to set about dealing with a better known and galactic threat. Through team work and cunning Jon saves the day yet again.
