The long anticipated installment of the best-selling and critically acclaimed F.R.E.A.K.S. Squad series is finally here…
CLASSIFIED: The Exiled F.R.E.A.K.
What’s a F.R.E.A.K. to do after all her hopes and dreams literally died in front of her? Telekinetic Beatrice Alexander went from flying around the country in a private jet, saving innocent lives from monstrous threats to living in her grandmother’s house, playing video games and drinking too much. Directionless, hiding from her problems and trauma, she will do anything not to confront her deadly actions that fateful night in North Carolina three months before. Any distraction will do.
Enter Lord Connor McInnis.
Drawn to the sexy, powerful ruler of San Diego, Beatrice soon loses herself in the passion and luxury of the vampire’s world. But when she finds herself caught in the middle of a centuries old vampire rivalry, Beatrice must decide: how far is she willing to go for those she loves…and for herself?
Jennifer Harlow spent her restless childhood fighting with her three brothers and scaring the heck out of herself with horror movies and books. She grew up to earn a degree at the University of Virginia which she put to use as a radio DJ, crisis hotline volunteer, bookseller, lab assistant, wedding coordinator, and government investigator. Currently she calls Northern Virgina home but that restless itch is ever present. In her free time she continues to scare the beejepers out of herself watching scary movies and opening her credit card bills.
Okay. I'm going to start off by saying Bea is a HOT MESS in this book. Hot. Freaking. Mess. Her self-destructive lever's been torqued to the max and she's running on emotional fumes. Heck, she's not even running on fumes. Emotionally, she's as closed off as a person can be while they're still breathing.
Granted, she has an excellent reason for being like she is. Her last mission with the F.R.E.A.K.S, shattered all the dreams she had for the future. She blames herself for what happened and she's totally unable to face her old squad members. She has some deep-seated issues she needs to work out and she's actively avoiding all of them.
Naturally, her self-destructive leanings send her straight into the arms of Vampire Lord Connor McInnis. Which throws her dead-center in the middle of vampire politics and all sorts of other unsavory things.
Vampire politics are nothing to mess around with, man. They're messy and dangerous and Bea's telekinetic power makes her a hot commodity.
Dark and sometimes bloody, Bea's emotional journey was hard to read at times and some of her actions were almost cringe-worthy. Given the circumstances, though, she had to go through all the awful to get to a place where she was even SLIGHTLY ready to move on. Now it's just a matter of continuing forward for her.
I kind of forgot to post this review after I read the book because I read the book and wrote the review when I was on vacation last year so it was still hiding in one of my notebooks but I finally got around to posting it. Phew! Initially I was a little nervous to start this book because I knew it was going to be a little different from the previous four books. And it did actually end up being quite different but in the best way possible!
It's been a while since the book before this one but I remember how the end really broke my heart so I knew the main character, Bea, wouldn't be in the best state of mind in this story. But it only showed how very human she really is. I don't want to give too much away but she ends up being in a relationship with a rich and powerful vampire named Connor, which really surprised me because this didn't seem typical at all for Bea. She was grieving the loss of the love of her life so I did understand her reasoning concering all her actions. She made some rash and bad decisions, sure, but I can't say I blame her for it.
Speaking of Connor... I never really knew what to really think of him when he appeared in a previous book or was mentioned. He was a major character in this book so it gave me time to get to know him more. I liked him but there were also moments when I was reading the book that I felt something was really off about him. I was going back and forth a lot with him. The story kept me guessing whether he was to be trusted or not, which is something that I actually loved.
Compared to the other books this one was really steamy and also a lot darker. That was yet another thing I loved about it. You know me, I'm all about the darker books. And of course there was Oliver, my favorite character from this series. He's just so wonderful and he was amazing in this book. I love how well he knows Bea and how well she knows him in return. I'm not sure if she actually deserves him but I do want them to be endgame (although I'm not sure if there'll be another book but a girl can dream) They have a real and strong connection. I was also really glad that he made Bea see sense eventually.
So overal I loved The Sin Eater by Jennifer Harlow. It's definitely one of my most favorite books by her and a very powerful story as well. I can't recommend this series high enough. It also features different paranormal creatures and people with various powers.
My review is a bit long and ranting. My hope is that this story fixes all the problems caused by Book 4 and puts the series back on track and brings us back for more stories like Book 1 - 3.

Another great read from Jennifer Harlow. Only reason it took me so long to read it is because I had gotten into a reading slump and took a few days off after starting it. This was a great series!!! Highly recommend this one to anyone, even if you are not a fan of vampires and other supernatural creatures.
It has been a while since I visited the world of F.R.E.A.K.S Squad Investigations. Almost 3 years to be exact, so I was a little worried that I would be lost jumping into THE SIN EATER. If you're worried about the same thing, don't be, things came back to me as I started reading and Jennifer Harlow was good about rehashing what happened in the past.
I have to admit that I'm a cover whore and I totally hate the cover of THE SIN EATER. Thankfully it's the 5th book in the series and I have enjoyed it in the past or it would have totally turned me off to reading the book. Since I am already talking about things I dislike, I will mention my other big issue with THE SIN EATER. Beatrice annoyed the hell out of me with her selfishness and lack of common sense. Yes, she is grieving, but it was extremely hard to sit back and watch her treat her family and friends like crap. I wanted to reach into the book and slap her around. It was just bad decision upon bad decision until Oliver came and reminded her who she was.
Now onto the things I enjoyed about THE SIN EATER. I enjoyed seeing Beatrice—after she was herself again—see Oliver in a different light now that Will is no longer in the picture. It was nice to see her realize things I knew from reading past books. She was also willing to sacrifice quite a bit after all was said and done when it came to the major conflict of the storyline to save those she loved. Her previous actions still annoyed me, but her new actions definitely helped to put the issues on the back burner.
As you can see, THE SIN EATER was a mixed bag for me. If there will be more books in this series—and I hope there will be—, I hope it focuses once again on Beatrice and the F.R.E.A.K.S together again and I hope that Oliver and Beatrice are able to advance from where the story left off.

Absolutely fantastic – Beatrice Alexander is back!
Beatrice Alexander is back at it again and what a comeback it is. Honestly, I was a little worried with the wait after HIGH MOON that we wouldn’t be having another adventure with the F.R.E.A.K.S., and I was crushed by that idea. I’ve said this before, and I will say it again, this series is one of the most underappreciated gems in Urban Fantasy, and Jennifer Harlow delivers us that magic again in THE SIN EATER. After a reread through the series I was completely captivated by the magic of these characters, and I devoured THE SIN EATER while reading it straight through until the early morning hours. Thank goodness I opened THE SIN EATER up on a weekend so that my husband was able to take care of the children whilst I became engrossed with my favorite F.R.E.A.K.S.
THE SIN EATER focuses on Beatrice and the emotional aftermath she finds herself in after the events at the end of HIGH MOON. There is a bit of a rough start as readers have to watch Bea lashes out at those closest to her and hide from the world, but this quickly morphs as the storyline progresses. I adored seeing the reemergence of Lord Connor, but he couldn’t hold a candle to my enjoyment of the storyline progression between Bea and Oliver. Let’s pray that there will be future books in this series, and we will be able to see the continuation of their chemistry and a reintroduction to the rest of the squad’s members.
With this series I recommend reading all the books in sequence and not as a standalone. Trust me, its worth your time and money. 5 Stars.
Holey katz!! What an emotional roller coaster this one was! I alternated between wanting to slug Bea and wanting to hug her. I missed what exactly happened to cause the uproar in her life having not read #4 yet. I don't know how I skipped it. But the uproar has caused her to doubt every aspect of her being and turn to someone she knows to be a sociopath in the past. Bea turns from her friends and family towards what she thinks she deserves. There were times when I wanted to stop reading and move on to a book that wasn't as draining emotionally, but I kept going. I am glad that I did. To see Bea as a human with all of the emotions that entails instead of the wise-cracking kickass investigator helped me see her as a whole person. I became invested in her well-being, even if that meant wanting to smack her around for her own good so she would see reason. Fighting the good fight, sometimes against herself and those she loves, sometimes against the enemy in whatever form that takes. I can definitely recommend this book and this whole series [even if I haven't read #4 yet]. Start at the beginning though, is my suggestion. Meet Bea and the other F*R*E*A*K*S*
I have mixed feelings about this book. There are some great twists and turns and enough action to keep things moving. However, it was difficult to see the protagonist such a mess for the majority of the book. I also really don't get throwing in the Oliver threesome sex scene that was apparently irrelevant by the end of the book. I feel like I've finished with this series and whether or not there are any more books in it I won't be reading them . That being said I really enjoyed the first 3 books in the series and the author can definitely write! I just don't like the direction the series took.

Once again I am amazed at how many deep emotions I can feel in one story by this author. Many times I caught myself saying things like "why?", "how could you?", "yes!" out loud to no one but myself. Awesome
Honestly, this is the first fantasy book with an incredible edge of realism that had me actually engaged to the point where I wasn't even sure of what I was feeling let alone where the story was going. Literal WOW.
Wow.... just... wow! Total roller-coaster! PTSD at its ugliest. The story gathers steam until it crashes near the end and what an explosion it is!
I loved it, as I did the other four books so why only 4 stars? The ending left me a bit on an empty stomach. I want more, I want to know what happens now between the two of them, not just leave it like that, unresolved.
Also, the editing is slightly missing, some typos, wrong words and so on but we're all humans. I make mistakes myself more than enough.
So different from the other four, this is dark, ang art, rebellious, and smutty! I don't know how I feel about this at this point, I'm a little torn...
