Preservation: A DRMR Short Story

Rate this book
Memories are the most dangerous beast.

Kari Akagi is ex-British Special Forces, augmented by her government to be the prime soldier. In the wake of a devastating attack that cost her her legs, she has a new mission – protecting South Africa’s endangered species as a ranger for the Kruger National Park game reserve.

The number of animals within the reserve is rapidly dwindling as poachers mercilessly slaughter them for black market trade. Somebody is paying and equipping the poachers, and after her unit comes under assault, Akagi is determined to end this impossible war.

All she needs to do is capture one of the poachers alive, hack into his brain, mine his memories, and find out who hired him. A lifetime of fighting, though, has taught Akagi that things are rarely ever that simple…

Originally published in The Cyborg Chronicles (The Future Chronicles Book 9), Preservation is a short work of military science fiction set in the world of the DRMR series and featuring all-new characters.

Don't mess with these park rangers.

This short story packs a punch. Michael Patrick Hicks weaves a tale that I could totally see in today's news. It was fantastic to read about the underside, and see how someone takes on the darkness.

Be warned, it tugs at the emotions.

I originally read this in the Cyborg Chronicles anthology.

Great introduction to the DRMR series

Hicks does a great job of introducing the world he has created with the DRMR series. Great technological advances have allowed wealthy governments to turn ordinary human soldiers into augmented cyborg super soldiers. Added to that is the ability to hack a person's memories, and we have the basis of a fast-paced, tech-action thriller. Hicks deftly weaves details about this futuristic world into the plot of the story through ex-SAS soldier Kari Akagi's eyes as she hunts down a gang of poachers on an African nature reserve. He handles the pacing very well, following Akagi from the park to her base to the enemy's lair. Given how bad the poaching appears to have been for a while, her sudden disregard for procedure seems unusual, and there appears to be no oversight for her actions (perhaps a confrontation with a superior would have been too cliche anyway, and may have slowed the story down). But I did wonder (briefly) what made this poacher hunt different than all the others, and I did question how easily she was able to track the villain and dispense justice. Why had this not been done before? But it is a minor quibble as the action flowed very well thanks to the author's efficient descriptions and his flair for the cinematic. It made for a very entertaining read and I cannot wait to read more in this DRMR universe.
