Fulcanelli is an Enchanter, an ancient engineer/alchemist who is able to imbue the weapons and gadgets he constructs with magical powers. Transformed into a demonic being after his death, he is always accompanied by his demon lover Eukanaria. Due to circumstances still unknown, his is in need of a new body. Until one can be found, Eukanaria must guard the pendant containing his soul from the many demonic forces that wish to obtain his great power for their own. In the present day, Haruhiko Kanou is an ordinary boy good with machines and nursing a crush on his science teacher and neighbor Yuki Fujiwara. Little does he know, he is Fulcanelli's perfect double and Eukanaria has tracked him down...
Haruhiko is your typical lovestruck student. The teacher he adores is Yuka, who happens to live very close to his residence. Her lack of expertise with gadgets led him to become a tinkerer, hoping to be of use to her and, of course, get closer to her. But his love is unrequited.
Enter Eukanaria, a demon whose physical form happens to be a dead ringer for Yuka. Even her name is suspiciously similar. She gravitates to Haruhiko because he has the same scent as a demon she loves named Fucanelli, an Enchanter whose soul is contained in a pendant around her neck. Just like that, Haruhiko is pulled into a strange situation that requires him to build odd devices he'd never previously heard of and fight creatures from another realm. If he can pry his eyes away from Eukanaria's body long enough.
I picked this first volume up because I found the artwork attractive, and I'll be sticking around because the story is fun and the humor amusing without being extreme. The chapters are lengthier than some manga, but this is a quick, easy read, with concepts that actually don't require the amount of explaining you'd expect. (Or maybe I'm just used to this sort of thing. But what few explanations there are are brief and don't get in the way.) The action scenes are brief, but very well drawn, and the characters are well realized.
Definitely a guilty pleasure read, a goofy supernatural fantasy/romance/comedy. The main character, a teen named Haruhiko, has long had a crush on a neighbor a few years older who has become one of his teachers. The difference in their ages is just small enough that Haruhiko can't forget her, but he's still a teen and she's a teacher. The trick is that HE resembles a demon/sorcerer who is being sought after by various entities, and SHE resembles the sorcerer's demon companion. The story opens with the real demon companion showing up, looking like a really "hot" version of the teacher, but with cleavage and bat wings. Much of the humor has to do with the demon's semi-serious efforts to seduce the teen, in order to get him to hand over his body and soul for her purposes. The author admits that it has a lot of fan service, but there's actually a fun story that got me hooked. Also, even while the demon is trying to use her physical charms to entice Haruhiko, she criticizes him for paying more attention to her body than to what she's saying, a remarkably mixed message, but a valid one.
I... don't even know where to start with this one.
It's a very middling shounen story, with—
—actually, I was going to compare it with Bleach, because the setting is vaguely similar, but it's more Jujutsu Kaisen in that the one powerful enchanter wants to possess the body of a like-minded high school boy (except Fulcanelli seems more benign toward Haruhiko than Sukuna would be to ANYBODY).
Otherwise, it's a lot of "whoops, tore open a lady's blouse during a fight scene" stuff. "At least" the creator owns up to having an "older women" fetish, so it's not half-naked high school girls.
THIS time.
Highly forgettable, easy-ish to read but nothing that really stands out.
Read up to volume 4 as a pre-teen (23 as of typing this) and really liked it, although I could never find any thing further than vol 4 in the booksamillion I'd go to back then.
