Defeat a three-headed fire breathing monster? All in a day’s work for the world’s only male wizard. Conryu returns to the academy after surviving his first semester by the narrowest of margins. Little does he know the monstrous threats waiting for him in the second half of the year. Back in Sentinel City things aren’t progressing any better as the devious Lady Raven plots the city’s destruction from her hidden lair. The exciting third book in The Aegis of Merlin Series finds Conryu facing an ever growing list of dangers. Can he conqueror his foes before time runs out?
This is another good book in the series. I rated this one a little lower since it had more secondary character point of view narration that the last book. When the author focuses on Conryu and his learning it is much more interesting. The author keeps going back to the detective and the 2 magic users trying to investigate the events in book 1. I like the idea that this first year was spent mainly focusing on dark magic but since Conryu has all the elements the next books can deal with him learning those elements.
Alright for a guy who has watched and read a tonne of manga and anime. This book kinda felt like a filler arc. The story and action are cool but villain was kinda meh.
There was a good build up and initial set up of a grand plot to take down Conryu but the mc is overpowered and does a whoop ass pretty easily. I guess the author meant to have the main villain focus on only killing Conryu but it feels like a negative in this sense.
La Fey society seems to be working towards an overarching goal of freeing Morgana but it seems that they have some powerful wizards who are just sitting there. Perhaps the villain here was more focused on recruiting for the society but perhaps that aspect could have been better highlighted.
I wanted to feel the evil plots like a deadly tendril with spikes stuck everywhere and a shocking realization should be felt by the protagonist and his harem ( yeah.. it definitely is a harem as only women have magic and new one seems to be introduced who is beautiful and gets stuck to the hero) but it feels like they brush it off pretty easily.
Its a decent read and will give an overall rating for the series once I am done with it.
I love this series so far! The characters are well done and engaging. The overarching series plot is interesting and the mini stories in each book are enjoyable.
I especially find it interesting that the most powerful people are all women and a subset is extremely threatened by the very existence of Conryu, as he is the only male wizard in recorded history. I like that he is more concerned with taking care of business and hasn’t let his newfound power go to his head (either to rule the world or to see great fame). I hope he can hold onto that and become a great force for good in his world.
This third entry into the series juggle 4 or 5 different plots introduced in the previous book (or the first, for one), resolving a handful of them, and leaving some. Still, the action proceeds at a relative rapid pace, since the book itself is not too long.
However, I'm reminded this is very much a YA series. Because love triangle, of course. Can't have a YA book without setting up a love triangle. Although I would have expected much, much more, since having a boarding school full of girls, women professor, and a single 18-year boy in the middle...
For books 1, 2, 3 - they're basically one long story. I've not read further yet.
Overall, it's a fine series. Bubble gum for the brain.
The MC is a bit of a 'Mary Sue' (or Marty Stu) [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Sue] type of character. He is so freakishly powerful that he might eat the world. Next to him, pretty much everyone else is half or less - and he's still at his first semester of magic school.
While there is nothing especially deep or quotable here but it is an enjoyable way to pass some time.
I'm fairly impressed the author has kept the story interesting.
This is kind of interesting. The main character, Conryu, is in the 2nd half of his first year. By law he has to complete 4 years just as any woman must.
He is, by himself, yes over powered, but many want him dead. The book it's just the LeFey sorority. So it just him and a few under powered ladies trying to save him because he is simply there friend.
Being the only male wizard in the world, when all you really want to be is a mechanic can be a bit of a pain! Especially when there are hundreds of female witches... most of whom don't like or trust you, or even want you dead. A great story of magic, friendships and 3 headed demons. With a magical talking book thrown in as well... what's not to like? Highly recommended.
Action and character depth continues in this latest (third) book of the series. Delivered well and edited very nicely, the story expands on past characters and events and introduces some very unexplored capabilities. Each book is an easy read, making them perfect for killing a few waiting rooms and commute times. Very nice series. Recommended.
The story is excellent. The main character is for the most part very well done, but more close minded in some ways than the villains. This is really the only detractor for me. Still enjoyable read, moving on to the next one now.
3.5 * the story was engrossing and a nice built up from the previous two books. If the focus was only on the MC and quit going back and forth with the city magicians I think the book would have been a solid 4 stars iron maybe a 4 and a half.
I read this book as part of an omnibus. It was well written with interesting characters and a decent plot. However, while the plot and characters seem aimed at a young middle school audience he occasionally included incidents that were very adult making it hard to recommend this book.
I have enjoyed this book twice now and hope to read it again in the future like the hole set I can only say give this set of book a go as they are well written and the story is different
Wonderful addition to the tale of the first male wizard. Looking forward to seeing what else the future has in store. Side characters have been developing nicely to make the story multi dimensional.
Nice little fight with balanced romantic and slice of life. Conryu heads home to impending disaster, maby final book? Maby end of 1st arc either way a good read.
Couldn't put this down. The story and characters are getting better with each book. Wow, feeling quite awesome and powerful! Starting the next one immediately
Sometimes when you reread a series different things pop up. I forgot about the police and their problems. This is how James Wisher set up the next book!
Story is interesting, if very short. However, the price tag for the story is steep. If you're to buy it, get the omnibus, you get a much more decent pricing.
This is my favorite book of the series by far. I love the characters, the plot, and the adventures. This book has much less gruesome gore, which is what makes it my pick.
For such a short book it has too many POVs. When something interesting happens, it switches to someone else. I understand this is needed for me to get the entire story, but that does not mean I have to like this method.
