Rate this book
Most marketers concentrate on what they’re trying to get. The best marketers concentrate on what they have to give. The way people consume media is changing, fast. Laptops, tablets, and smartphones keep us constantly connected to the web. This represents a huge opportunity for savvy marketers. The only the old methods are no longer working. New media demands new advertising. Facebook is the single most effective platform for marketing in the Internet era, and Nicholas Kusmich is the best Facebook marketer in the world. In GIVE, he will show you what differentiates Facebook from traditional advertising and explain why it’s so important to promote your business in a way that’s congruent with the norms of social media. He’ll take you through a four-step process to pinpoint your market, master your message, create a magnet, and build a mechanism that both collects and helps you retain and develop those relationships. When used well, Nic’s Facebook advertising strategies can send your return on investment through the roof. In GIVE, you’ll find the tools you need to share your authentic voice with the people who want to hear it and turn their attention into satisfying, meaningful sales.

Good, but not as robust as promised.

There's some solid marketing theory in this book, but if you're looking for a bunch of hands-on, "how-to" advice, there isn't much here (although what is here is pretty decent). In the end I felt like the book gave me about half as much as thought it would.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It reminded me of something very important about Facebook that makes it different for businesses and service providers than platforms like Amazon, eBay or Etsy and that is that people come to Facebook to hang out, catch up with friends, look at funny gifs and memes. Maybe also to check out their exes' new boo or see if a frenemy is still dating that hot guy you both liked in college. They are not coming to Facebook with credit card in hand, looking for something to buy. If you go in guns blazing with salesy Facebook ads, you are only going to turn them off. And this is why you have to GIVE first, give often and be seen as a giver, not a seller. This is something that I and a whole lot of other people on Facebook probably forget in the midst or trying to perfect our audiences and lookalike audiences and retargeting audiences and conversions and all the rest. This is a really important reminder. Use the platform you are using in a way that blends seamlessly with the purpose of the platform.

When I picked up this book I had hoped that there would be some very specific technical advice on how to make the ads, strategies for retargeting and stuff like that, but then again, when I thought about it, Facebook changes things all the time, so if that had been the case with this book, it would have been very quickly dated and outdated. Instead this gives you the overview of why, what and a general how to be successful with your Facebook ads. And honestly the strategy is more important than the tactics. Tactics change all the time. But the strategy of giving, that is never going to go out of style.

Great book.

I love reading books with this type of subject. This book, being a fairly newly published one, was very promising. I figured it would have information I had no idea existed and would give me a leg up into the world of Facebook advertising. What I found quickly is that this was another book on putting a lot of money into something so that you get a lot of money back. All of the examples seemed to be of hugely successful people who had a lot of money to begin with who went on to just make more money. There was nothing really new in this book. The steps that the author used to build an audience were nothing out of the norm...find your niche, create your message, etc. I really would have appreciated more information about how that Facebook algorithm works and why I'm getting a bunch of people from out of the country liking my posts instead of ones in the U.S.. A decent read but not too many new things to learn, at least from my perspective.

Facebook marketing strategy

Good book. Very practical info. Would have have like a bit more details on figuring out one's niche -- offers and service -- to serve the top 4%. Great strategies. Looking forward to applying.

Great insight into the value creating nature of social media. People don't come to Facebook to buy, they come to experience valuable content, so stop selling and start "GIVING"!

While sales pitches do bring customers, your brand must develop some form of authority in the space, without it , why would anyone purchase from you over the next guy? Content is king, but context is the queen, she really runs the show.

Very quick read, I went to his conference and I feel a little cheated. lots of the content is shared with his seminar. Giving almost a book tour vibe in hindsight to his presentation.
He's right though. About all of this stuff. To the people giving less than stellar reviews I feel like they aren't listening.
The content is a little etherial, yes, but it's true to all marketing. If you think that you're going to read a book that's going to tell you "the answer" then quit. Or don't. Keep doing it the way that you're doing it because you probably suck at your job and make the good people look that much better.
I find a lot of resistance from a specific type of person(See Old) who wants to keep doing the same thing and try to retrofit their old ideas to work for facebook. Old marketing guru's and people in traditional ad space trying to play 8 tracks on ipods.
Similar to his sales pitch, this book isn't designed to convince you of anything. If you don't believe in facebook (for some reason) then this book won't change your mind. It's not for that. It's very motivational, as all sales books are, but I've found with all this marketing and advertising and youtube stuff, you pick a horse you like and make a bet. They're all saying very similar things and you just need to find one that resonates with you. If you like the person it's that much easier to listen and learn. Also, spending makes things real. I believe in a lot of what he says. Just about providing value, some content for free. Elevating yourself to an authority through demonstration and social proof, then charging. Establish yourself, value your time, charge for your knowledge.
I can see myself doing what Nic does.
If you don't dig it find someone else who's peddling the same shit. there are many.
Having met Nic he is pretty much like that all the time. He's genuine. He is also very smart and has a presence about him that most would like to emulate. If you are looking for a guide/mentor he is a wonderful choice.

It has some good marketing theory, but if you're looking for a how-to for creating ads then this isn't for you. He does go into the psychology of creating great ads which could be useful for people who have already have a strong background in generating ads but unlikely to be of much help if you want hands on guides.

I appreciate the brevity of the book as many business books are much longer than needed, but Give is lacking enough content to make it stand on its own as a book. I've learned more from free web resources on Facebook advertising than I did from this book.

The excellent advice I knew it would be

Having met Nick at a conference and listening to him speak I knew this book would be of great value and I was not disappointed. He is one smart cookie.

Not what the title promised.

A short book on advertising that had very little to do with Facebook or any type of social media, for that matter.

The only reason I finished it was because he’s a fellow Canadian and because I dropped 10 bucks on it.

Tons of great info!

This book far exceeded my expectations. It showed me what I've been doing wrong with my ads so far. Plenty of actionable info to act on.

Super good theory on advertising for Facebook. However, if you're looking for technical details for Facebook ads, this isn't your book. Certainly worth a read if you do any Facebook marketing.
