The 15-volume Swindoll’s Living Insights New Testament Commentary series draws on Gold Medallion Award–winner Chuck Swindoll’s 50 years of experience with studying and preaching God’s Word. His deep insight, signature easygoing style, and humor bring a warmth and practical accessibility not often found in commentaries. Each volume combines verse-by-verse commentary, charts, maps, photos, key terms, and background articles with practical application. The newly updated volumes now include parallel presentations of the NLT and NASB before each section. This series is a must-have for pastors, teachers, and anyone else who is seeking a deeply practical resource for exploring God’s Word.
Charles Swindoll has devoted over four decades to two passions: an unwavering commitment to the practical communication and application of God's Word, and an untiring devotion to seeing lives transformed by God's grace. Chuck graduated magna cum laude from Dallas Theological Seminary and has since been honored with four doctorates. For his teaching on Insight for Living, he has received the Program of the Year award and the Hall of Fame award from the National Religious Broadcasters as well as multiple book awards.
This was a surprisingly helpful volume in my recent study of Hebrews. Swindoll gives a light, but adequate explanation of the text, with commentary, illustration, and application. It’s format makes it ideal for Sunday School teachers and Bible Study leaders who do not need an in-depth, critical commentary of the text.
"Insights on Hebrews" is a Bible commentary. The author explained the meaning of various key Greek words and provided information on the cultural and historical background. The author gave a paragraph or two of Scripture and then studied through that verse-by-verse. At the end of each section, he discussed how we can apply the writer's message to our own lives. He also included occasional "journal" pages were he talked about how those verses had been applied or worked out in his life.
Though you can look up information on just a single verse, this is more a Bible study book where it's assumed you'll read the whole book. Most of the text focused on clarifying what the verses mean so the reader can better understand them. Some parts were more of a sermon, where he tells the reader what to understand from it.
This book was easy to follow and understand. I was surprised that the book was relatively small as I'd expected him to have a lot to say about Hebrews. He did cover the main points of the text, but he didn't dig as deep as he could. I'm reading another commentary on Hebrews that made many of the same points (and more), but it also required more focus to follow the text. So, overall, I'd recommend this book.
I have been a long-time fan of Chuck Swindoll. While I normally have read more of his devotional writings in the past, his verse-by-verse commentary on the Book of Hebrews is fantastic. Taking his natural, conversational method of writing and pairing with a careful commentary on a seldom studied and read book (Hebrews), Dr. Swindoll helps to make sure that the average Christian can read, appraise, understand, and apply God's Word so that the man and woman of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. Dr. Swindoll deals with semi-technical language details without sounding pedantic or reaching. He tells enough stories to help make the text come alive in the brain and heart of the reader so that when he is finished with the last page, the reader agrees with the writer and the Holy Spirit Who inspired the book that Jesus is great than all!
I liked several features of this commentary: 1) Two Bible translations included as part of the text. (New American Standard Bible, and the New Living Translation). 2) Clear discussion/explanation of the text 3) Application at the end of each section of scripture
An accessible commentary that rightly handles and respects the Word of Truth. Offers application as well as explanations of multiple theological perspectives on controversial passages.
Swindoll has a clear and honest commentary on a deep and difficult book. His style is readable while offering scholarly insights. He does not leave it at merely interpreting the passage but provokes us to consider our lives in its context.
I was not looking forward to studying Hebrews. Thankfully, I followed the Lord's leading. Now, thanks, as well, to Pastor Swindoll's "Insight" I learned Hebrews is a precious Word from God.
