It'd have been more entertaining if I were closer to 13 instead of 30.

I've had my eye on this since at least midway through the year, I included it on the new manga blog post I did a while back and I was so intrigued by it...but still not entirely sure what to expect. I ended up being pleasantly surprised, because it was even better than I was envisioning and I'm really excited for the coming volumes!

I love the colours used in the colour pages at the beginning, it's bright and pretty and the art on the colour pages is gorgeous and so cute...the art throughout the entire volume is so cute actually! Considering the subject matter of this series..you know, serial killers and murder and blood...it was an interesting contrast. Cute characters who are psychotic killers.

The opening is nice and creepy and it doesn't get any less creepy from there. I was really pulled in to the volume, and the pace was nice and fast. I was on the edge of my seat reading multiple times, I could feel the tension and I was mentally shouting at the main character multiple times. Like you know there's killers everywhere, and they're all creepy and you're waiting for the other shoe to drop...especially with Danny.

There's a really fun game like feel to it, with each floor having certain rules and the clues and hints and the things needed to get to the next floor. Rachel seems all innocent and Snow White-ish at the beginning but she has a creepy moment of her own pretty quickly that had me side eyeing her for the rest of the volume.

Zach looks set to be our other main character and he's your average, bandage covered, crazy serial killer. He's a "decent guy" according to himself and oddly enough he made me chuckle more than once. He's kind of oddly loveable and I'm looking forward to seeing more of him and getting to know him.

"Doctor Danny" provides us with the awkward moment when Zach is less creepy than he is. Danny was legitimately so creepy it made me shudder and our MC was kind of oblivious and I was mentally screaming at her. The eye thing is definitely what made him creepy, and it kind of made my eye twitch. He did have a nice amount of back story to him though, considering this is volume one!

Our MC, Rachel, remains quite mysterious. Who is she? Why is she there? We know she went in for counselling but not why and there's a lot of her character to unravel still, as there is for Zach too. As the two team up I'm hoping we'll get some background on the two of them and it seems likely from what I've seen of the series so far! Each character has a lot going on under the surface and more to them than first appears.

The plot has a nice mystery element going on. Who's in charge? Who made this place? What exactly is going on? And so on, and I'm intrigued to unravel all of it and put the pieces together. I love the combination of cute, gorgeous art with blood, gore and intense creepiness, it's quite a stunning contrast.

Angels of Death is fast paced and has left me wanting more, as well as being excited to get on to the other floors and meet more of the killers that inhabit them. Not to mention get to know more about Rachel and Zack, and their pasts and so on! I have a feeling both are going to be very interesting characters! Their banter is hilarious if not a bit murdery. All in all this is an excellent first volume, serving to introduce the story and characters and get you interested in what's to come!

This is a weird one for me. On the one hand, I do like the concept and some of Rachel's and Jack's interactions are amusing. On the other hand, Jack is way too over the top to the point hilarity, the tone and atmosphere try to be scary/disturbing but fail in both departments, the writing is nothing special, and the artwork/art style is average.

That being said, I don't think this is necessarily a bad first volume, but it had a lot more potential that was squandered. I feel like this is either "newbie anime fan's first 'disturbing horror' manga" or just a light, fast read for everyone else. I am planning on reading more of the series, so there's definitely something compelling me to continue. However, I can't in good conscience give this higher than 2 stars because an interesting concept doesn't make up for everything else being lackluster.

The game was better. This adaptation put way too many full page splashes to where the dramatic effect was lessened. Also, the whole thing with Rachel and the bird took away the whole surprise aspect with her past that is revealed later on in the story (at least according to how the game displayed the story). I’m still holding out hope, but it’s kinda mid right now.

I'm still not really sure what there is to say about this to be honest. It was a fun time, like I did make fun of most of it, so obviously it wasn't really scary for me at all. I am totally going to be reading the rest of the series because I want to know where this is going. Overall though it was just a fun time.

Murder, death, sweet baby childs, 5 eyed creep, a hot serial killer, a win in my books

everyone is too busy bitching about the “animal cruelty” to appreciate the beauty of this manga. From the panels to the story is pure art but people are all hung up on ONE DAMN BIRD, screw the bird i dont care you see it for not even 3 pages let it rest in peace or pieces

One of my favorite new manga titles.

I haven't played the game the manga is based upon so I cannot make any comparisons based upon that, but I find Angels of Death refreshing, intriguing, and beautifully drawn.

I look forward to the other volumes in the series.

Cool concept but somehow wasn’t that interesting. I will likely just watch the short manga vs. 12 volumes.

TW: Animal death, suicide (I’m sure there’s more but these are the most obvious ones)
edit: There's bits of spoilers throughout this review but I can't figure out how to blur out just those lines, so sorry the review looks weird, trying to fix it.

I wanna preface this by saying I have already watched the anime so I might inadvertently give spoilers and I'm not sure how (or if) the stories differentiate.

But I love how unique the story is even though the premise feel like nothing more than a cheesy trope. A girl, in this case Rachel Gardener, wakes up in a mysterious building and has to escape, but wait there's a killer after her. I'm sure it's the premise for a handful of horror media; but wait, what if, like a cheesy commercial, we give you two killers for the price of one, chasing after our protagonist

3.5🌟

I’m not gonna lie…I’m reading this mostly so I don’t rewatch the anime for like the fourth time this year…well more like third and a half time? I never did make it through a full third rewatch 😂

Regardless, this first volume definitely has some of what I love about the anime…but personally I love the anime way more.

This first volume choppy at times and like it revealed too much about certain things and not enough about others.

For example, the scene with Rachel and the bird showed us way too much, when both the video game (which I only played a little bit of since I’m not really good at it) and the anime were much more subtle about what was being revealed in this moment.

On the other hand, the transitions between scenes often felt awkward in this. I felt like I often was missing the connective tissue of how exactly Rachel solved the different puzzles in each level. This is all much clearer in the game itself (since you have to solve the puzzles yourself) and in the anime since they made it flow similar to the game but more fleshed out.

I don’t know. This sits in an awkward middle ground for me where I’m still going to rate it highly because I already love the characters and love the dialogue, but I can’t rate it too high because it’s just a poorer version of both the game and the anime (at least so far).

P.S. I love all the little insider notes we get from the video game creator! Those are genuinely interesting to me as I do care about his process of creating the game and fleshing out both the characters and their storylines for the manga.

Angels of Death #1 by Makota Sanada was an enticing first book in this exciting manga series. If you like thrillers and reading about crime, then this series may be for you!

The main character, Rachel Gardner wakes up in an unfamiliar building. She comes across a note scribbled on the wall that challenges her identity. As she’s wandering the halls, she remembers that she’s at the hospital for counseling because someone was killed in front of her. She hears a broadcasted message saying that she’s a ‘sacrifice.’ She finds a newspaper that has an article about a murder. As she continues to walk, she sees blood splatters and hears another broadcast which makes it sound like she’s in a killing game. She finds a baby bird and realizes its wing is broken and tries to fix it, but someone comes by and kills it in front of her. This is a sign of what’s to come. There is a character she encounters, Dr. Danny, who tells her that he’s her doctor, so it indicates that she’s in a hospital. The story follows her and another character (whose name isn’t revealed until the end) as they try to escape from the building and the game.

I liked that it was suspenseful. I’m intrigued by the characters and the mystery around their presence in the building. It ends in a way that a reader is left wondering what might happen.

Readers who like crime, suspense, and mystery will enjoy this series. There are 12 books in the collection, and this is number 1. I intend to read all 12.

This series is just good for your inner edgy thirteen year old who likes both the sad stuff in The Witch's House and the feel good stuff in Ib, honestly. It's very much a guilty pleasure thing because it's so over the top and in your face with its clunky themes, but dang it I like it.

Fair warning that this is based on an RPG and it really does read that way sometimes (e.g. "oh dearie me a puzzle how are we going to get ourselves out of this one"/"time to do some backtracking").

I like the art style in the manga a lot and would argue that it's the best when put up against the source material in the video game and the anime adaptation BUT I would probably recommend the anime overall because of the goofy voice acting (warning for a lot of cursing. A lot a lot) in the dub and the original.

Side note, there's a definite Anglophilic vibe that's kind of interesting (the characters are all definitely meant to be English/possibly American based on their names) in the same way that The Crooked Man series is definitely meant to have an American cast and appealed to Japanese audiences by having American voice actors.

More like a 2.5 read for me, I rounded up because I don't like video game to manga conversions because they so rarely work IMO. (I didn't know that when I bought this). The art is good and the story is well honestly weird.

Rachel is a 13 year old girl who wakes up in a chair in a clinic with vague memories of being brought there by her parents. As she tries to figure out what is going on and to find a way out, she's attacked. She manages to evade her attacker and ends up on another floor of the building where she meets her doctor.

He turns out to be an eye obsessed creep and he means her no good either. This is when Zack, the killer from the other floor, intervenes and Rachel learns this is some kind of sick escape room scenario where each floor has a killer on it and she has to escape them. Zack by leaving his floor is now in violation of the game and is also a target.

We see only a little of their partnership by the end where he acts over the top for several pages and she finds a few clues (Rachel is at least intelligent)

I think this was probably better as a game and I don't see me reading on.
