World War Hulk.

This book is simple, i dont mind. Its Hulk after the far better Planet Hulk,  he is pissed and want to smash Everything to bits, and especially Ironman, Reed Richards, Black Bolt and Doctor Strange. Because they send him to an alien planet with a rocket, yes this book will not win any awards in the originality department.. But its nice if your in the mood for some simple Hulk action ! The main event is cool and absolutely action packed. The tie-ins however are pretty forgetable, some are nice to see some different angles from the battle or for some really cool fights, X men vs Hulk and mainy the Juggernaut. But it gets very repetitive. And in the end your just slugging through tie-ins, tie-ins and some more tie-inzzzzzz you catch my drift.. My tip is read Planet Hulk and the main event of World War Hulk. And your good.

3 stars.

The storyline that ruined The Hulk comes to a close.

I wasn't all that crazy about author Greg Pak's PLANET HULK epic, and this wasn't much better.

Granted, the concept of PLANET HULK is a grabber: The Hulk is launched into space by a cadre of other heroes who deem him too dangerous to remain on Earth. They supposedly sent him to to an idyllic uninhabited planet that could sustain him indefinitely, but they somehow didn't figure on the massive, enraged creature they were firing into space being angry and trashing the ship, which resulted in the spacecraft going off-course, marooning him on a savage planet where The Hulk is forced to fight for his life in barbaric gladiatorial contests.

The Hulk being The Hulk, he soon becomes the top dog of the arena, and eventually leads a revolt that topples the ruling class, and he sets himself up as King of Sakaar. But....since there are no happy endings for The Hulk.....the craft he arrived in mysteriously explodes, destroying Sakaar, most of the planet's citizens, and The Hulk's bride and unborn child. Hulk....smash.

WORLD WAR HULK finds The Hulk and his crew of misfits ("The Warbound") headed to Earth to exact revenge on the people that sent ol' greenskin into exile, and who they blame for the destruction of Sakaar: The Illuminati. (Also known as Iron Man, Mr. Fantastic, Doctor Strange, and Black Bolt.)

This all sounds very exciting, but Greg Pak is a terrible writer, so whatever can't be solely carried by the visuals sucks. The art for the main event of WORLD WAR HULK is handled by John Romita, Jr., whose work I enjoy, but....the older he gets, the blockier and harder to decipher it becomes. There were large chunks of fight scenes (And, to be honest, the bulk of the story is nothing but fight scenes...) that were just impenetrable shots of massive bodies pressed against one another, and I often had no idea what was being conveyed.

I said above that this storyline was the one that ruined The Hulk, and I stand by that. The event was poorly thought out from the beginning. Having The Hulk basically conquer the world through alien force of arms, and then attempt to murder every superhero in New York (Saying "But they deserved it!!" does not justify attempted murder....sorry.) might make for an exciting story, but it isn't one that the character can ever come back from. And he never really has. Since being depowered at the end of this event, The Hulk has been replaced by an old man Red Hulk, some female Hulks, a teenaged Asian Hulk, he's been relaunched and relaunched again, killed, rebooted and retconned......but, to me, this story ruined the character. Sometimes, Editors need to say "Neat idea, but we can't do that." Marvel got a crowd-pleasing story out of this, at the expense of a pivotal character. Much like when they decided to make Iron Man a controlling, government-toady asshole....it took them years, and a movie, to undo the damage that they did. I didn't like it when Pak had "Heroes" turn their back on their friend and ally and shoot him into space, because it made them no better than the villains. And here, they are portrayed as straight-up bad guys. Doctor Strange even lets a powerful demon take control of his body, endangering the entire world, in the hope that it will kick The Hulk's ass. This is just bad, bad, stuff that ignores, and shits on, decades of Marvel continuity. After PLANET HULK, WORLD WAR HULK, ONE MORE DAY, and CIVIL WAR, the Marvel Universe, and the heroic characters that inhabited it, were no more, replaced by tribes of murderous, selfish lunatics that I no longer recognized or cared to read about.

But it isn't all bad news. This book gets better as you read it. (And you should read it in order, as printed...I tried to do a chronological read, using Marvel's own preferred reading order from their own website. It was just a mess.) Read the main story first, then the assorted other stuff, exactly as presented here.) HULK: WORLD WAR HULK OMNIBUS collects WORLD WAR HULK PROLOGUE: WORLD BREAKER, WORLD WAR HULK #'s 1-5, THE INCREDIBLE HULK #'s 106-111, IRON MAN #'s 19-20, AVENGERS: THE INITIATIVE #s 4-5, THE IRREDEEMABLE ANT MAN #10, WORLD WAR HULK: X-MEN #'s 1-3, GHOST RIDER #'s 12-13, HEROES FOR HIRE #'s 11-15, PUNISHER WAR JOURNAL #12, WORLD WAR HULK: GAMMA CORPS #'s 1-4, WORLD WAR HULK FRONT LINE #s 1-6, WORLD WAR HULK: AFTERSMASH, WORLD WAR HULK: DAMAGE CONTROL #'s 1-3, WORLD WAR HULK AFTERSMASH: WARBOUND #'s 1-5, and PLANET HULK SAGA. Whew.

There's some gold in the tie-in stories. The GHOST RIDER and X-MEN issues are good, solid smash-em-ups, Dwayne McDuffie's DAMAGE CONTROL manages to be funny and tie up a lot of loose ends, HEROES FOR HIRE has a boatload of great action bolstered by strong characters and interpersonal relationships, and GAMMA CORPS is a nasty DIRTY DOZEN-on-Gamma-radiation slugfest. The further I got into the book, the more I enjoyed it.

Overall, a shitty crossover event that yielded some great crossovers and side-stories, earning a solid seven out of ten.

6/10:
This omnibus/event are one of the biggest pieces of Marvel Comics history that I’ve ever read and I’m not entirely sure that it was worth it. There’s a lot of different runs that culminate into this entire event, so I’m going to talk a bit about each of them:

World War Hulk: the main event is truly brilliant, with the prologue and epilogue issues making these 7 issues so intense and exciting for Hulk and his allies. Absolutely brilliant.

Hulk: I loved this title as well, it’s a good compliment to the main event and showcases how Hulk still has loads of allies on Earth including Amadeus Cho, Hercules, and Angel.

Iron Man: While these are obviously focusing on the enemy of Hulk, they add a lot to the story and show the thinking of these opposing heroes.

Ghost Rider: These few issues ROCK. Something about Ghost Rider and Hulk going toe to toe that is just exciting and engaging.

Front Line: Some of this is cool, but a lot drags. I appreciate the “field work” we see between Danny and Korg, but this is just meh.

X-Men: Another brilliant tie-in, showcasing Mutants from across the world take on Hulk, namely Wolverine and Juggernaut.

Heroes for Hire: These suckkkkk. Misty Knight and Shang-Chi are the standouts, but seriously, this gets so convoluted and I hated them.

Gamma Corps: These issues were miserable. I honestly wanted to skip them, that’s how boring they were. Just no.

Warbound: Seeing Hulk’s alien allies post-WWH was really neat and I appreciate how we see that they all truly have hearts of good, but they were corrupted by the betrayal they faced together.

Damage Control: These issues were fine, but a whole lot of nothing happening. The Chrysler Building was absolutely the best part and I hope he returns.

If you plan to read through this event, I’d argue you just stick to the main event and the Hulk issues. There’s not enough here to justify reading the entire omnibus and suffering through tie-in after tie-in after tie-in.

It's the most solid 6,5/10 you gonna get from Marvel. It's entertaining enough, the main plot and tie-ins are super simple though. I've read this after a longer break from superheroes, so it probably looked better than it really is. The pros are that the tie-ins are rather light and don't drag like with Civil War. The cons - it is what is - it's no Planet Hulk or Peter David's level. It's an inevitable wrap-up to the Hulk situation - a reset if you like. If you a Hulk fan, you can't skip that one.

Había olvidado el recurso barato de usar a Miek como chivo expiatorio.

Fuera de eso, gran evento. Hubiera sido mejor con un castigo permanente a los Illuminati pero pueses lo que hay.

5 stars for the story, 2 stars for the collection. Could it have killed them to put this in chronological order? Seriously? Anyway, the story is fantastic and it shows the true ferocity and ability of the Hulk but it also showcases that he isn't just a dumb animal. He is tactical and cunning in this as he just decimates the heroes of the Marvel universe. I also loved all the side stories, especially the Heroes for Hire and Damage Control ones.

In my review for the Planet Hulk Omnibus, I said that Planet Hulk was great because it combined several elements together to make a great Hulk story, rather than just relying on one thing (such as the Banner vs. Hulk trope or simply "Hulk smash everything"). World War Hulk, however, is a "Hulk smash everything" story but, when combined with the backstory from Planet Hulk, it really works and elevates the violence from mindless explosions to a revenge story that makes it difficult for the reader to decide who to really root for.

Now, I am giving this volume five stars because World War Hulk is such an amazing story, but be warned that not everything in this Omnibus is going to be for everyone. If you just want the World War Hulk story and don't care about any of the side stories surrounding it, then just pick up the World War Hulk trade and you will be fine. For everyone else, lets take a look at what you get in this beast:

World War Hulk Prologue: Details a few events that happen just before World War Hulk including Hulk's trip back to Earth. Not essential but still fun.

World War Hulk: Likely why you are reading this volume in the first place. It is totally amazing.

Incredible Hulk 106-111: Really about Amadeus Cho and a few heroes that are trying to help the Hulk. It's pretty good and fills in some of the back story, such as what happened to the demon that Dr. Strange summoned to fight the Hulk with.

Iron Man 19-20: Events from Iron Man's point of view. Read if you are an Iron Man fan.

Avengers: The Initiative 4-5: My 2nd least favorite thing in this book. Includes a cast of characters that I have never heard of and don't really care about. It does, however, explain what happened with Iron Man's nanobots in his fight with the Hulk.

Irredeemable Ant Man 10: Not that great but not terrible, either. Seeing ant-man crawl around inside of the Hulk was fun.

World War Hulk X-Men 1-3: One of my favorites from this volume. Seeing Hulk take on Nightcrawler, Wolverine, Colossus, Cyclops, Juggernaut, and a host of other mutants was like a blast from the past from the best days of the X-Men.

Ghost Rider 12-13: I liked this one, but I am also a Ghost Rider fan. If you aren't a fan of Ghost Rider, you can safely give this one a pass as the story itself is actually pretty pointless (Dr. Strange's words at the end are pretty interesting, though...).

Heroes for Hire 11-15: I didn't think I would like this one but ended up enjoying it. Deals with the Heroes for Hire (sans Luke Cage and Iron Fist. Yeah, its been a while since I picked up a Heroes for Hire book so I am not too familiar with this roster. It was fun seeing Black Cat, though) vs. the insects from Hulk's army, namely Miek and No-Name.

Punisher War Journal 12: pretty fun Punisher story if you are a fan (I am). Here, Punisher is saving some civilians while taking on some rogue members of Hulk's bug army. If you don't care about the Punisher, this one is safe to skip.

Gamma Corps 1-4: The worst thing in this collection. Holy crap is this one bad. The art style made Hulk look like a bloated green thumb and Hulk defeats his enemies (knock offs and rejects that were made using the blood of Hulk and his greatest enemies) by apologizing to them and talking them down from fighting (you read that right: freaking WORLD WAR HULK talked monsters down from fighting and said he was sorry to someone. Sheesh.). Also, most of these four issues have nothing to do with World War Hulk and are instead origin stories for these monsters that we don't care about at all. Unless you have to read everything World War Hulk related, give this one a huge pass.

World War Hulk Front Line 1-6: This is a strange little story that deals with how street level heroes and everyday people are dealing with World War Hulk. It also involves a mystery about the death of one of Hulk's allies from Sakar, and another of his allies and a human have to team up to solve it. This one is a lot slower paced than many of the other stories here, but I liked it more than I thought I would. It gives a human face to all of the super-powered carnage.

Aftersmash One-Shot: World War Hulk is over and its time to pick up the pieces. Pretty good epilogue to an amazing story.

Aftersmash Damage Control 1-3: They should have stuck with just the one epilogue. This one is a very slooooow story about rebuilding efforts in the wake of Planet Hulk, and it is also written like a comedy and thus feels pretty out of place here. Marvel as we see the action of people getting hired for jobs! Ooh and aah at budget negotiations! Watch heroes pick up debris! It was fun seeing the Thunderbolts, though.

Aftersmash Warbound: Talks about what happened to Hulk's remaining allies. Pretty good story with a few twists and turns but, as I read this omnibus all in one sitting, I was pretty burned out by this point so it may be better than I am giving it credit for.

Planet Hulk Saga: Do yourselves a favor and just pick up the Planet Hulk Omnibus. The stories surrounding it are generally better than many of the stories surrounding World War Hulk.

World War Hulk by Greg Pak

Hulk comes back to Earth from Sakar and wants justice!

The story picks up immediately after Planet Hulk. We see Hulk and his Warbound mates come to Earth looking for those responsible for his banishment (and seemingly responsible for the death of millions, along with Hulk's wife and unborn son) - the Illuminati. What follows is a lot more "Hulk Smash" than Planet Hulk, which if read without the benefit of Planet Hulk is admittedly pretty boring. Reading immediately after Planet Hulk, however, works much better.

Overall, it doesn't have the same impact as Planet Hulk, and this being the main Marvel 616 things needed to back to the status quo eventually... The art is okay - being an event omnibus, there are some good ones and some bad ones, with most of them being squarely in the middle. The main artist of the World War Hulk mini (1-5) is Romita Jr., which is someone that I can't say I like too much, but he does okay in this. I do still wish some of the battles had been drawn by someone else - the team handling the art in Planet Hulk would have been my choice here.

One thing that bothers me is the lack of consequences for the members of the Illuminati who shot Hulk into space. I get that things have to go back to the status quo, but there is absolutely no moral arc for them and no regret or grief whatsoever. They don't even say sorry after everything. It's... infuriating to say the least.

Anyway, this being an event omni, there's a lot of noise and garbage...

World War Hulk Prologue: Sort of a recap. It's okay.

World War Hulk: Again, pretty good; I wish it had better art.

Incredible Hulk 106-111: This one's about Amadeus Cho, Hercules, and other heroes who are there to (fill in some backstory and continue the Hulk main title ha) save some people in the background.

Iron Man 19-20: Quite frankly, I just skimmed these. It just shows things from Iron Man's POV, which who cares.

Avengers: The Initiative 4-5: Skipped.

Irredeemable Ant Man 10: Skimmed.

World War Hulk X-Men 1-3: Pretty good battle of the Hulk agains the X-Men. I actually liked this one.

Ghost Rider 12-13: Overall, I liked it - particularly how it ended.

Heroes for Hire 11-15: Skipped hard.

Punisher War Journal 12: Skipped.

Gamma Corps 1-4: Super hard pass.

World War Hulk Front Line 1-6: Skimmed. Some background saving stuff goes on here.

Aftersmash One-Shot: A nice little epilogue prepping what's to come for the different teams.

Aftersmash Damage Control 1-3: Skipped. Too jokey.

Aftersmash Warbound: Skipped.

Planet Hulk Saga: If you read the Planet Hulk omni, this is pretty much a wiki version of it.

So, first of all, I want to be crystal-clear that I read this as individual issues chronologically, not as the Omnibus that will be released as a hardcover later this year. I wasn't lucky enough to score a glorious galley copy or anything like that but I have devoured every issue that this omnibus will collect and read them in the intended order. Basically, I binged on the World War Hulk storyline over a short period of time and felt that it was appropriate to review it this way rather than adding 5 different books to my shelf.

That being said, I obviously can't provide any credible information on the beauty or lack thereof of the hardcover issue that will arrive in the final copy of this Omnibus. However, I have no doubt that the book will be worth collecting for anyone who loves the Hulk and this storyline. If the big green guy is your cup of tea, then this will be over 1000 pages of awesomeness.

World War Hulk was a massive cross-title storyline that took place in the Marvel universe and immediately follows the events of Planet Hulk. If you haven't read that, then I suggest that you do. However, if you are too lazy and just want to jump in, you could probably get away with it since they flash back and provide multiple synopses of the gist of Planet Hulk. To sum it up, Hulk is pissed because he was sent to another planet where after being kept as a gladiator slave, his wife, unborn son and basically everyone else was blown up by a bomb that he attributes to several key Superhero leaders back on earth. He takes his warbound buddies and goes back to earth for vengeance and it is a bloody destructive mess.

This is a pretty big event in the Marvel universe and you'd think it would be a bundle of constant fun... and it was at first. The problem is that the same story and events were told over and over and over. Quite honestly, very little actually occurred over these 1000+ pages that couldn't have been told in a few short issues. It's a shame because it could have been so so good! I don't regret reading it all but I think that most people would be satisfied by just reading the core issues of the storyline without bothering to re-read the events in 5 other crossover titles.

"Planet Hulk" took the Hulk to new places figuratively and literally. We were given Sakaar, the Warbound and all their cultures, and the Hulk almost had some semblance of a normal(ish) life away from the puny humans of Earth. Unfortunately, a tragedy happens that forces him to return to Earth to give the Illuminati their comeuppance in "World War Hulk".

The 5-issue event in itself is an action-packed, grand, and straight-ahead revenge story. The Hulk returns to Earth as a literal World Breaker (he's the strongest he's ever been and virtually unstoppable) with his Warbound, and the Illuminati-along with a multitude of other heroes-are panicking and scrambling to find a solution to yet another Hulk problem. Hulk literally beats everyone that tries to stop him: the Illuminati and the heavy hitters of the Marvel universe. No one has an effect except for The Sentry; however, perhaps his effect isn't as physical as you would expect.

As the plot unfolds, we learn that the tragedy on Sakaar is not all that it seems, and Hulk might be motivated by misinformation and reinforcing humanity's perception of him as "monster". I got a kick out of seeing the Warbound interact with humans and other heroes and enforce their "Green Scar"'s plan to establish Sakkarian rule.

Unfortunately, the Omnibus suffers from a mixed bag of tie-ins. It starts out with a WWH prologue and then the 5-issue event. After the first quarter of the book you have the middle 50% of tie-ins followed by a final quarter of aftermath issues. Marvel really could have structured this book better and at least include the most relevant tie-ins between the main-event issues. My favorite tie-ins were Hulk 106-111, Heroes for Hire, Gamma Corps and Frontline which depict the the event from a hero and human level point of view. The aftermath issues were mostly forgettable but I did appreciate the Damage Control mini trying to depict how cleaning up the destruction in reality.

Overall, I enjoyed the main event but felt really fatigued by the mixed-bag of tie-ins and structure of this Omni. You should read the Planet Hulk Omni in full and only read the prologue and main event issues of WWH to have an overall fantastic experience.

When World War Hulk first released, I absolutely loathed it. It was coming off of Planet Hulk, one of the best Hulk stories of all time, and my excitement was through the roof. Hulk vs the Marvel Universe! By the same writer! What could go wrong?! Well at the time, a lot apparently, as it was one of the least enjoyable times I've ever had reading a comic.

Enjoying the high of the current Immortal Hulk series, I saw that Marvel Unlimited had put up a reading list of WWH that covered all the tie in books and was in already in the proper reading order, so I figured why not, all it would cost me is my time. I don't know if this was a case of enough time having passed that I could better appreciate what Pak and co were doing, or if Immortal Hulk is so good it's capable of retroactively making past stories better, or what, but I enjoyed it this time. Maybe reading all the tie ins this time helped as well? It's not a great story and doesn't come close to the highs of Planet Hulk, but it's not as bad as my initial impressions of it however many years ago.

What I imagine happened here (and this is true of so many comic events) is that Pak had the idea for Hulk returning to Earth and pitched it to Marvel as just the next chapter in his story in the Incredible Hulk, but then Marvel decided to it needed to be a line wide event with its own miniseries and dozens of tie ins, and the whole thing then got watered down and spread thin. I dunno, but as a concept and a story, it probably deserved better.

This is such a great premise that is ultimately bogged down by repetitive storytelling and tie-ins that add very little to the story.

When I started reading this someone suggested I was a masochist for reading the omnibus with all the tie-ins, but I enjoyed some of the fringe stories, like the Heroes for Hires tie-in, so much. I also appreciated the attempt to tell the story from multiple angles and perspectives. It felt like they were trying to make each tie-in stand alone by giving you the threads from the main plot, unfortunately when reading this as a collection it meant pages and pages retelling the exact same events. This collection was also organized in a strange way, not moving chronologically in some cases. I'm torn, the main plot of this was pretty great, and there as a lot of potential here. In the end it felt like they wrapped everything up quickly, there wasn't ever that pay off moment. This was particularly odd because it felt so front heavy, with all the small stories dragging the main plot down and the climax being over without too much impact. Overall I felt pretty disappointed!

Another pulpy, rich book that I think captures the awesomeness of the Hulk and his power, but the emotional anchor loses it grip as it seems to fall to the wayside that is glorifying the destruction the Hulk creates. Not to put a moral stamp on it, it just becomes clear that the hook of Hulk's grief is nothing more it seems than plug-in to get him to this point. It feels like this was the story Pak wanted to write from the beginning, and it explodes off the page for that reason. The art feels crisper and thicker, and the action sequences are great and even terrifying. But, by its end, Banner feels like a second fiddle in the whole affair. Hulk's mind and soul feels like a second fiddle. This is bronze and brawn storytelling at its finest. Which is fine enough, but the reputation of this book would you lead you believe otherwise.

Really great overall, but too many weak subplots to deserve 5 stars.

The World Breaker prologue, the main World War Hulk limited series, Front Line limited series, and the Hulk, Ghost Rider, X-Men, and Punisher tie-ins were all outstanding and would deserve 5 out of 5. These parts were on par with Planet Hulk.

The Iron Man: Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. tie-ins were necessary but dull. This takes place shortly after the events of the enormous Marvel Civil War event, and I really hate Tony in this era.

The Gamma Corps limited series was good, but not great. It was a fun concept but 3 out of 5 for execution.

The tie-ins for Avengers Initiative (2 issues), Heroes for Hire (5 issues), and the one Ant Man issue weren't worth reading at all and make up almost 20% of the event.

Altos
X-Men, genial.
Heroes For Hire. No conocía a ningún personaje.

The main WWH storyline is what I'm rating a 4. Lots of fun and a good followup to Planet Hulk. The Incredible Hulk issues are good too, seeing Hulk apologists on Earth. I also liked the Frontline stories as they touched on what happens to normal folks during superhero disasters, which we don't get often in comics. But everything else is just pretty bland. It's just Hulk going on sidequests trying to make everyone else feel bad for him. "Prof X, you're the real monster." "Tony Stark, you're the real monster." Bah not worth the time to read them. Just read the main event and the best of tie ins.

I had a hard time deciding between 3 and 4 on this one. I really enjoyed Planet Hulk and this is definitely inferior. Planet was short, concise and awesome. This was long and sprawling, filled with unnecessary tie ins. The story is simple and cool, Hulk wants revenge for a very good reason and beats the living shit out of the entire Marvel universe. The problem is this story didn't need this much content to tell. Once Hulk takes out the A-List cast it gets a little tiresome watching him wade through the B and C heroes. Still there is a ton to read here and that almost warrants a 4 on its own. Hulk SMASH!

So I have mixed feelings about this book. The main event is epic, the prologue is also very good. And I don't know why but I love all the front line stories so far. But most of the other tie-ins felt like fillers and I did not like them. Overall I do not regret buying it, but I was expecting a little more.

This isnt The best comic book ever. Its pretty much just bug action fun. But i actually love it and it is continuation of one of my favourite Hulk story Planet Hulk. I kind of expecting it would be bigger … its world War Hulk right? Not just Manhattan War Hulk.. but i enjoyed it. I even enjoy most of tie-ins!

This is the continuation after the events of Planet Hulk and after finishing this omnibus, the main event itself was pretty good. Not as great as Planet Hulk but still fun and straight forward action. I think if the omnibus had been mapped differently and had woven in the tie-ins with the main event, it would've felt more complete.

I thought this story was really good. It pulls the reader in with a fast paced and fun plot. I found it hard to put down. I liked the roles everyone played though some very small. Its enjoyable when a conflict isn't an easy fix but something that takes several strategies. I liked the emotion in it.

I preferred Planet Hulk over this, but 4/5 because of the way storylines converged into this event and coz they were finally held accountable for what they did to Banner.

"Never stop making them pay".

Wow where to start with this. It’s a fantastic read. There are a couple stories in, that i feel were made up for extra money at the time. The main story though was brilliant and a must read for any marvel or comic fan for that matter.

Great book

I imagine you probably already know what you're in for. It's a great book tho. All the tie-in/extra content was mostly good aswell. Im just wondering when the Chrysler building will get his own spinoff series.

The main event was a blast and some of the tie-ins were fun as well, but overall most of them were a waste of time.

pure rage made art!
not a fan of how everyone just keeled over in front of his cohort, but Hulk was in fine form here.
