Styling Serendipity

Birthdays are normally celebrated, but that is not the case for 26-year-old fashion designer, Olivia Rose Salvador. She doesn’t like birthdays, much less her own. She considers October 1st as a jinx, because all through her life, all the important people in her life have left her right smack on that day.

As the heir of the international Style Rose fashion brand, she is in charge of preparing for Style Rose’s first appearance in Philippine Fashion Week. During her stay in the Philippines, she meets 31-year old pediatrician, Jake Ocampo, who is literally the “boy next door” as he lives right next door to her temporary condo unit in Bonifacio Global City.

They start to get to know each other and everything seems to be going smoothly, as both, who have been burned before in terms of love, start to open up again and start living life to the fullest.

But what happens when it seems the jinx is strong and the ghosts of their painful pasts start coming back and making themselves felt? Will these ghosts threaten their very new and very fragile relationship?

Or will Jake’s love for Olivia break the October 1st curse?

This is my first book from Racquel. She also writes other genres aside from Romance and after reading this work of hers, I am very curious to read her other works. :)

Styling Serendipity, for some reason, evoked sweet memories of watching Barbie’s series of movies with my sisters back in college. Maybe it’s because Olivia, the leading lady of this story, is an Italian fashion designer. Her love interest, Jake, is a pediatrician (and in my mind, Dr. Mike of Instagram). LOL. A Barbie & Doc Mike love story. Interesting things my mind is capable of imagining!

I’ve heard people describe some romance books as “Fluffy” and although I don’t exactly know what makes a book fluffy, I feel like this is one of them. The MC & LI scenes together are sweet and picturesque, and there is a high-school-kind-of-love vibe to it that I know most of us have daydreamed about.

Some parts I found problematic, though, is Olivia’s tendency to be slappy. I understand it’s meant to be a cute couple-thing between Olivia and Jake (I know girls IRL who think they’re being cute when they’re like this, I personally don’t think so.), but I don’t think that’s 100% alright considering Jake has had an abusive childhood. I also thought the parts with Aunt Consuelo; Olivia’s father; and most especially Karen, were too telenovela-ish.

Other than that, I loved the parts with food and travelling. Especially the chapter with the Kare-kare. Not only did the dish show Olivia’s love for Filipino food, it also gave her good memories of her mother to set back the uglier sides of those memories. AND CALAGUAS! (I won’t say more bec. spoilers! LOL)

Oh, and the business side of the fashion industry is in this, too. Some of it, at least. I loved that it included the Philippines as one country who appreciates fashion. Sometimes, it gets overlooked in the midst of political and economic turmoils our country’s media blares incessantly.

Styling Serendipity is a sweet book from a sweet author, and this is a fun read for those who are in for something uncomplicated and lighthearted.
