A.I. Destiny #2

Queen Jane

Rate this book
Jane is fighting a war she doesn’t understand. The Owls are arrogant, utterly convinced of their superiority, and hardly worth being called a threat. But they are a threat to everyone else, and Jane is yet to find out the real stakes involved in this war. With Jane in the middle of known space, Baron Fred is trying to hold things together at one end in Gaia, while Walsh is holding down the diplomatic fort at the other end. For Fred, finding out the real cost of maintaining your ideals comes home to him in the most personal way possible. Walsh on the other hand, is tired of being the barer of bad news all the time, and wants to get back to exploration. For the other AI's, Jane and Walsh have shown them a possible future, and they need to make a choice, but first there is the pesky business of winning a war. Jane doesn’t have time to be a Queen, but finds building a Kingdom might not be as difficult as she might have thought. Jane has choices. Fred has choices. Walsh has choices. The AI's have choices. Even the Owls have choices. But do any of them really? Jane didn’t want to be the Admiral, and even though her new higher rank might have been thrust on her, to make things right, she must be, Queen Jane.

Timothy Ellis lives on the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia; where he constantly battles with his cat for possession of his desk chair, Daleks do guard duty, and he keeps his sonic screwdriver next to his lightsaber and wand. Now there is a female Doctor Who, he eagerly awaits the sound of the Tardis materializing in his house.

He has spent his life reading and watching science fiction and fantasy, and has been playing Space Genre computer games since he used to be smuggled in to play the original text Star Trek game on a university mainframe, long before the PC or Apple appeared. Since 2004, he's written game guides for the Egosoft X Universe series, culminating in two versions of the X3 Handbook. He has also designed major mods for the various games, and dozens of mini mods.

He has been a farm worker, Antique Dealer, Computer Programmer, Systems Analyst, Operations Manager of a small retail chain, and Retail Store Owner. He is now a full time author, who still does Spiritual Healer and helper work.

After leaving behind the corporate and business worlds, he was opened to his Spiritual gifts. Now a Feng Shui Master, Feng Shui led him to Buddhism, Karma, the Tao, and back to western spiritualism. Since 2006 he has been writing spiritual articles and helping people via spiritual forums and Facebook Groups. His spiritual books include "Personal Healing Using Basic Meditation", "Life Harmony, Feng Shui in Plain English", '101 Tips for the John of God Brazil Experience', and "The Wisdom of the Ages is available for the price of asking a question" series of 8 books. His own spiritual healing led him to writing novels.

His first novel, 'Hero at Large', spawning the long running 'The Hunter Imperium' universe, brings together his love of the space genre, magic, spirituality, and cats. Now 10 series long, the universe covers 3 galaxies, 4100 years, and as at Dragon Imperative, 62 Novels, 7 shorts, and 2 companion books. There are 7 main entrance points across 10 series: Hero at Large, Admiral of Gaia, Yesterday's Spacemage, Crossover, Midshipman Spacemage, Old Magic, and Dragon Rider. Alternate entrance points if you don't need backstory first, are Adrift and Mage King, although Dragon Rider has 3 books before it about the dragons.

If you wish to be kept up to date with new releases and information in The Hunter Legacy Universe series, subscribe here: http://eepurl.com/bqMgVz, and follow on Amazon, Goodreads, or BookBub.

The fastest way to find out about a new release is my Facebook group/page, which get advance warning about 2-4 days before release, and again when the book is uploaded to Kindle; and my email list which goes out as soon as I have an Amazon page for the new book. Bookbub will let you know about 3-4 days after I remember to tell them.

I normally will release in advance of the specified release date whenever possible, so if you are a Kindle Unlimited reader, you will want another method to be notified of the actual release date, so you can read on day 1.

Not bad

I like the concept of this series, where it is not assumed that a machine intelligence would necessarily have non-human goals. The story mostly flows along fairly well and the protagonist is likeable. The author finds humor in many things, and it comes out in his writing.

The author does have problems with appropriate apostrophe usages. Many of his uses of plural and possessive nouns fail rudimentary grammar school rules, even by Australian standards. Hiring a proofreader would probably solve this issue.

The author obviously favors a different spiritual outlook from most authors, as demonstrated by his main characters, and the gods they interact with. I found it to be most interesting, though puzzling at first because I was not familiar with 'karma' and related issues, other than used as a flippant response to something.

I found the pace of this book to be a little unbalanced, in that most of the excitement took place in the first 60%, or so, of the book. The last 40% was pretty much just "clean up." Obviously, the author does not have to follow the common "formula" that other authors use, but I found the 2nd half of the novel to be a bit dragging, even though everything was being resolved.

My last comment is about the ease with which the protagonist solves her problems. This may be intentional on the author's part, but the main character never really lost control. She, herself, was never really, truly, threatened. No matter what, she pretty much had a ready solution. There was enough humor involved that this could be overlooked, but I think the story was less exciting because she was able to just handle everything so easily. Even the one significant death in the novel was reversed, effectively. Reference the term "Mary Sue," and its derivatives.

Despite my negative comments, the novel was enjoyable, and the author could easily develop an awesome writing talent if he keeps at it.

Another great SciFi novel from Timothy Ellis. I enjoyed the first book in this Jane spin-off series and this one is just as good. The story is a bit simplistic at times but I don’t mind this, as it makes it a pacey read.

I still wonder about the nature of the AI clones, are they individuals, are they still just part of the original, does each clone experience everything all the other clones do. Sometimes Jane reintegrates with her clones other times they are completely separate, for example is Janine now separate or still a part of Jane and what about the different copies of Darlene and Walsh?

I love books that have a eye characters as the lead.

This is a great book with an AI protagonist as the lead, I love the character of Jane, she is smart compassionate and has a good sense of humor. The book is a fun read and when there are battles they fight their enemies on equal terms instead of using old dilapidated equipment and fighting from behind. I am going to read the next book in the series to see how the story progresses. I think anybody who likes fast-paced fun enjoyable books with A lot of science fiction aspects artificial intelligence and spacecraft battles will enjoy this series and this book.

Coronation

Queen Jane kicks arse and takes names. Jane is loath to kill any more beings than is absolutely necessary. However, arrogance and stupidity raise their head interfering with her opponent's ability to recognize her superior military strength. I like the characters in that they feel real. The story is great and I like that she is in a position to force the issue, but does so with trepidation and concern. Will Justine be able to leave Gaia and rejoin the rest of the gang? I look forward to the next book.

This was a fun series and they left it open for more books to follow on. I hope they continue.

Only my opinion

This book wasn't up to the quality of the others. I appreciated the spiritual tone of the others. It was not a preaching but a soft remainder of our creater..

It’s in a great way! But damn! Amazing character development and crazy action…more than enough to entertain most! And the storyline advancement and expansion…

Great continuation

Fast paced story. A bit weird, every kind of species you can think of are stretching the story line quite a bit.
Face palming is getting old.
Cliches are also overdone. A roach planet that is nuked, surprised they didn't survive.

Best of a Long Line of Great Books

I have read the Hero series with pleasure and appreciation. The Jane sequels are fantastic and the last is one of Mr Ellis's best yet. I can't wait to see where he goes next.
