El arte de la vida: De la vida como obra de arte (Estado y Sociedad)
En nuestra sociedad individualizada todos somos artistas de la vida, ya sea por propia elección o por imperativo social. Y esto es así lo creamos o no, nos guste o no. The thing about any book by Bauman is that he crams more ideas per page than just about any other writer I can think of. And many of these ideas stop you reading so that you can mull over them for a while. Which, therefore, makes even a relatively short book like this one something that can take a while to read. It also means any review can only really skim across the surface in the hope you might read the original for the wealth available there.
In many ways I could sum up the point of this book by saying that life in what Bauman refers to as the ‘liquid modern’ phase of history we are currently living through is something we need to take on as a project, and that this something that we cannot put off or ‘not do’. All of the choices we make are choices that impact on our life and life’s course. We might as well approach life as if we were constructing a work of art. If this were all Bauman was saying this book would hardly be worth reading – rather you would be better off reading one of the ‘how to’ books he refers to as having a best before date somewhat between milk and yoghurt. His point is that this idea of ‘life as project’, ‘life as performance’ or ‘life as work of art’ is a remarkably recent one in human history and one that only makes sense given other things we probably take for granted about our world.
For instance, prior to capitalism people were much more likely to be born into whatever it was they were going to be – if you were born a peasant or a prince that was great, but you certainly didn’t get to choose to stop being one and become the other – no matter what your ‘personal attributes’ were. Social mobility, as such, simply did not exist. And this is important, since it meant that the degrees of freedom you had in making your own life a ‘work of art’ – in constructing your own pathway through life –were similarly non-existent.
This is not likely to have been much of a problem to people, not just for the obvious reason that you can’t mourn what you never had (in fact, we live in a world where the vast majority of people are encouraged most of the time mourn what they have never had – it is the only thing that keeps capitalism going) but more because being constrained by the life paths we were born into meant that a well-lived life was one in which that path was pursued with honour, grace and attention. None of those words are necessarily the right word, by the way (which is part of the reason you got all three) – the idea is that in the universe of that now bygone society each individual had, at birth, a fixed position and path to pursue, and their worth was measured in their dedication to pursuing that path.
Now, this isn’t as ancient an idea as it might sound. As Bauman says, in many ways this kind of meta-choice was the focus of Sartre’s philosophy and something Bauman himself followed while he was a young man – and although Bauman is now about as old as the world allows you to get, while I’m writing this he is still alive – he is still referring to a time that wasn’t all that long ago. As he says, once-upon-a-time the general path was what you chose (I’m going to become a poet, I’m going to become a doctor, etc) and then there were signposts along the way to direct your footsteps. There were clear things you would need to learn (different in either case, but still relevant for ALL poets or ALL doctors) according to pathways selected. That is, people could choose various destinations, however, the pathways to those destinations stayed pretty much the same and well-trodden. That isn’t the case today – increasingly, what you know and can rely on to ‘work’ today, you can more or less assume will cause you problems tomorrow.
This also implies a relationship to ‘art’ that is somewhat different to how we think of art today – something Bauman spends quite a bit of time discussing. You see, in this bygone world the life paths available to be chosen were essentially permanent, and so to create one’s life in such an environment – to create one’s life as a work of art in such an environment – implied constructing a ‘work of art’, or a ‘life project’ that would be also basically ‘permanent’. The attraction is similar to the work of architects of public buildings in the 18th or 19th centuries – these buildings were designed to last and to reflect a kind of perfect harmony in classical proportions (think columns and balance – sturdy persistence). Rather than the decidedly temporary public buildings of today. No one really expects even celebrated buildings of today to last for centuries, and certainly not for millennia. The destruction of the World Trade Centre was shocking – but none of us would have expected those buildings to outlast the pyramids. That really wasn’t their point.
And this is a theme that Bauman returns to time and time again. For instance, he talks about a young woman delighted that the shorts she bought at Top Shop are shown in Vogue and therefore this goes to justify her taste. His point is that this means she is likely to continue shopping at Top Shop, to use this label as a way to construct her identity – the difference is that she certainly won’t be shopping at Top Shop for the same sort of shorts the next time she goes there – even if her old pair have, by that time, been worn threadbare. Not only will that style of shorts no longer be available, but she wouldn’t even want them even if they were. The point today is that everything is in flux all of the time – the constants are in finding the ‘good taste’ to create one’s own identity and to constantly engage in the creative act of identity creation – and this is a kind of work of art.
Except, of course, the example given here is one of the problems we are confounded with in this ‘project’ – that is, since capitalism exists by, as he says somewhere else, constantly reducing the distance between the showroom and the rubbish bin, consumerism is a kind of cheap version of identity formation – but just as cheap as it is, it is also ubiquitous, unavoidable and inevitable. We are what we buy and what we buy is structured by the kinds of people we believe ourselves to be.
Much of the start of this book considers the contradictory aspects of ‘happiness’. Aristotle says in his Ethics that the good life is a happy life (well, sort of – what is translated as ‘happiness’ really says something closer to ‘good spirited’). Anyway, happiness seems like an obvious thing for us to pursue – in fact, the pursuit of happiness is one of those things Americans can be heard to mumble under their breaths while holding their hands over their hearts and voting for Trump. Happiness is a pretty good thing, it is not hard to see why people might be fond of it, but it might be even better if we could define it. Shakespeare’s sonnet 129 – The expense of spirit in a waste of shame – shows that even the greatest of happinesses are short lived and anything but ‘obviously good’. As a very dear friend said to me once, some people inject heroin because they say it feels like having seven orgasms all at once – and I avoid it for much the same reason.
The problem with happiness is we are so terrible at having the least idea about what will help us be happy. What is interesting is that our current social organisation is such that it stresses individual happiness and this is very much ‘inner’ directed. The metaphors Bauman uses to discuss this are those of centripetal and centrifugal forces – both are forces that from the ‘centre’, but one draws toward and one away from that centre. Here he provides a sustained critique of Nietzsche – always a good thing – and by implication also Foucault, at least to the extent that Foucault can be read as a follower of Nietzsche’s ‘will to power’ – only ever a partial reading.
But even here the complications do not stop. How are we to be moral? For Nietzsche this question is basically ‘who deserves to be treated morally?’ and by this he says that the vast majority of humanity are simply unworthy of anything but contempt – freedom is wasted on the masses of humanity because they lack the nobility that would allow them to make a real difference to the world – the weak, the botched and the bungled created morality as a way to constrain the great and the worthy. I’ve always hated Nietzsche’s work, so, I find Bauman’s critique of it here well worth reading. But I have to stress my own prejudice.
We are left wondering if morality is even possible. One of the points Bauman makes is that we generally would not consider something to be a moral act if it came with a calculation of the costs and benefits associated with doing the act. You know, if I save a child from drowning as a spontaneous act then that is moral – but if I do it while anticipating some reward I might receive from the child’s parents, that is not so good.
And the most powerful thing here is his discussion of those people in Poland who during the Nazi occupation hid Jews, knowing that if they were caught it meant death. Sociologists studied the standard characteristics of these people – religion, class, level of education, that sort of thing – and found that none of these predicted who would and who would not act morally to the extent of risking their own lives to save the lives of others. As he says, what court of law would convict you for not risking your own life to save the lives of others? Except, there is a court that will convict you of that, even completely unreasonably – your own conscience. Perhaps that is why Nietzsche is so popular today – who better to justify the accidents of birth that privilege some while punishing others while making these accidents appear as expressions of merit?
Now, don’t get me wrong here – I think a lot of the choices we think we make as an expression of our free will are not nearly as free as we like to imagine. In fact, a lot of this book stresses allowing such choices to be left to our natural inclinations, and these, as Bourdieu would stress, are formed by our socialisation. But what I said in the last paragraph – as contradictory to this paragraph as it is possible to be – still holds. There is no simple equation that links cause and effect here – there are butterfly effects that make causation appear as random accidents. And it is in this confusion amidst the impossibility of calculation that ‘free will’ appears to us. Ultimately, our choices might well be a reflection of our pre-knowledge and experience – but if it still feels like a free choice, then that is where the art of life resides – within the choices we make, however constrained. The problem is that so much of what we are presented with in life is a kind of three card trick that makes us feel like individuals while purchasing the latest style of hot pants from Top Shop…

Apesar do tom pedagógico da obra, a superficialidade das reflexões de Bauman não satisfazem o leitor mais exigente; as análises de Bauman à modernidade líquida são interessantes e o autor socorre-se de uma variada bibliografia, mas, ainda assim, sinto que ficou muito por dizer.
A obra centra a sua análise na felicidade enquanto sonho, enquanto mito e enquanto possibilidade. O homem não é feliz quando alcança, mas apenas enquanto deseja alcançar. Pelo meio existem estudos estatísticos e sociológicos ao consumismo e a outras distrações contemporâneas que nos afastam daquele que será o verdadeiro propósito do ser humano: bastar-se a si próprio.
É interessante, não aborrece, mas é demasiado sucinto. Peca pela leveza excessiva; o tema pedia mais.

The first part of the book address the pursuit of happiness. How, obviously, shopping isn't going to bring us happiness, but how we are going to fail to be happy anyway and maybe trivial pursuits at least temporarily distract us in our unfulfilled lives. He drops in an interesting idea about questioning the importance of hapiness as a target in our lives, but didn't develop any discussion in this direction which I would have liked to have seen.
The second part begins with the main theme of the book, living your life is like creating a work of art, but he quickly goes off on a tangent of examining the concept of generation with a dialectic of enlightenment and world war one and the increasing banality of the term revolution.
Returning to the theme of life as a work of art in part three he ploughs through Sartre and Nietzsche.
I read the german translation which was hard work for me. At stages I stuggled with a few pages over a week. At times I raced through pages in an hour.
What I got from the book: You can chase happiness and you have to work hard to get there, but the chasing may shift the nature of the chased. You can cast aside the dream of happiness and realise that what is all around you is happiness, but this can imply leaving comfort zones and societal "norms". Love doesn't just happen, you need to constantly work to renew and invigorate it.
This book was a present, if I borrowed or bought it myself I would go for the english language edition.

You can cast aside the dream of happiness and realise that what is all around you is happiness, but this can imply leaving comfort zones and societal "norms". Love doesn't just happen, you need to constantly work to renew and invigorate it.
This book was a present, if I borrowed or bought it myself I would go for the english language edition.

No me ha convencido esta obra "menor" del gran sociólogo polaco. Centrado en el humano occidental y rico, su descripción es economicista y llora las desgracias del postmodernismo que según él nos aboca a consumir sin freno y a intercambiar fachadas siguiendo las modas, con la inconsistencia del "yo" como destino irrevocable.
En una imagen que me recuerda a Tiempos Modernos de Chaplin, la modernidad liquida de Bauman nos devora a base de libertad mal administrada y sobre todo de insolidaridad.
Los 2 filósofos más citados son Hobbes y Nietzsche, lo que da idea de su pesimismo en referencia al hombre, con el egoísmo intrínseco como máxima.

Mi primera aproximación con el libro (y su título) fue un tanto escéptica por el uso de una palabra tan abarcante como lo es «arte».
Sin embargo,conforme leía la obra, parecía que las ideas de Bauman eran un eco de muchas dudas que venía masticando últimamente. Llegó en el momento que parecía que esas dudas no podían estirarse más, como si el destino deseara que tuviera en encuentro con las propuestas planteadas.
No encontré respuestas concretas a la preguntas que tenía y estuvo bien, porque puso en duda el terreno de dónde surgían esas dudas.
La gran pregunta que atañe al hombre desde siempre: ¿Qué es la felicidad?, es desmenuzada desde una perspectiva contemporánea, consumista, globalista que pareciera que corroe con su dinámica transaccional cada aspecto de nuestras vidas; pero, al mismo tiempo, evidenciando la permanente lucha que se fragua en el fondo de nosotros y que ha permanecido en disputa, política y socialmente, en los últimos siglos. La batalla entre lo individual y lo social.
El libro se siente, por momentos, caótico, sin orden, pasando de lo particular a lo específico a voluntad del escritor.

مَن اطلع على سلسلة السيولة (الحب السائل الثقافة السائلة..) لنفس المؤلف سيسهل عليه تلقّي الرميات في هذا الكتاب.
يصف المؤلف حياة الإنسان الحديث بتنقل عجيب بين المواضيع والسعادة هي ما يربط كل الفقرات ببعضها، مفهوم السعادة عند الإنسان الغربي الحديث ويقارنها بأقوال بعض الفلاسفة..
يتردد من موضوع إلى آخر ودون أن يكتمل الأوّل تمامًا وكثيرًا ما تُترك ليكملها القارئ بنفسه؛ لم تكن قراءة مريحة ولو أنها أضافت لي الكثير.
الكتاب غزير بالاصطلاحات والأوصاف الحديثة وتصنيف المجتمعات.. التي لو شُرِحت لكان خيرًا (مع أني استفدت جدًا بالبحث عنها!)
وشعرت أن الترجمة تحتاج لكثير من السبك والمراجعة وإعادة صياغة..
وبالمجمل، فإنك لن تُجبر الناس على اتباع نفس طريق الحياة؛ لأن كلًا منا يشق طريقه في الحياة بتفرّد ولو لم ينتبه لذلك.. فكل منا له صوت داخله؛ يرشده أي طريق يختار.

Zygmunt Bauman pone in epigrafe al suo saggio, L’arte della vita, una frase , tratta dal De vita beata di Seneca: "tutti vogliono vivere felici, ma hanno l’occhio confuso quando devono discernere ciò che rende felice la vita". Seneca sapeva che rendere felice l’esistenza umana è un’impresa difficile. E oggi non sembra che le cose siano molto cambiate: questo è il senso del libro di Bauman.
"Quale che sia il contante e il credito di cui disponiamo, non troveremo in un centro commerciale l'amore e l'amicizia, i piaceri della vita familiare, la soddisfazione di prenderci cura dei nostri cari o di aiutare un vicino in difficoltà, l'autostima per un lavoro ben fatto, la gratificazione dell'«istinto di operosità» che chiunque possiede, la simpatia e il rispetto dei colleghi di lavoro e delle altre persone con cui abbiamo a che fare; e non potremo ottenere la libertà dalle minacce dell'indifferenza, del disprezzo, delle offese e dell'umiliazione."
Il denaro non dà la felicità; quello che compriamo nei negozi non dà la felicità; la libertà è sempre un atto di responsabilità, una costrizione a operare una scelta e scegliere significa sempre rinunciare a qualcosa: questo non dà la felicità; l’amore e il desiderio si concentrano sempre su qualcosa che ancora non è, i loro oggetti sono tutti nel futuro … inaccessibile ai sensi e non indagabile da parte della ragione.

… Quelli che sono apparentemente i mezzi si trasformano in fini: di fronte all'elusività dello "stato di felicità" sognato e bramato l'unica consolazione offerta è quella di rimanere in pista; la speranza della vittoria finale sopravvive finché si resta in gara senza cadere sfiniti o essere espulsi con cartellino rosso.
… Impercettibilmente, la visione della felicità si sposta dalla gioia prevista, successiva all'acquisto, all'atto, precedente, di fare acquisti, che trabocca di gioiose aspettative perché colmo di una speranza ancora intatta, immacolata e non ancora delusa.
... Questo è ciò che possono fare per i loro clienti l'etichetta, il marchio e la "location": guidarli nel cammino - confuso, tortuoso e insidioso - verso la felicità: la felicità di presentarsi in pubblico con tanto di certificato pubblicamente riconosciuto e apprezzato che confermi (autorevolmente) che si è sulla strada giusta, che si è ancora in pista e che c'è ancora speranza.
"Viviamo in un'epoca in cui "attendere" è diventata una parola oscena. Abbiamo gradualmente sradicato, per quanto possibile, la necessità dell'attesa; la parola che preferiamo è ormai l'aggettivo "istantaneo".
Ciò che compriamo è già pronto a essere messo al bando, etichettato come vecchio, vivendo nella prospettiva del futuro in un mondo pieno di rifiuti. La società nichilista, dove la fine delle cose è il fine per cui le cose sono prodotte.

Il nichilismo non è solamente una teoria filosofica, è diventata una pratica comune che illude l'uomo alla felicità.
Siamo felici finché non perdiamo la speranza di essere felici in futuro: finché esiste un po' di quella speranza ci sentiamo al riparo dall'infelicità. … Ma tale speranza può rimanere viva solo a condizione di avere davanti a sé una serie di "nuove occasioni" e "nuovi inizi" in rapida successione, la prospettiva di una catena infinita di partenze.
"La condizione sociale non significa nulla se non è socialmente riconosciuta; ossia, se l'interessato non ottiene l'approvazione da parte del giusto tipo di "società" (ogni tipo di condizione sociale ha codici normativi e giudici appropriati), in quanto suo membro legittimo e meritevole: "uno di noi".
Etichette, marchi e loghi sono i termini del linguaggio del riconoscimento. Il "riconoscimento" che si spera di ottenere - e di solito si ottiene - servendosi di marchi e loghi è stato recentemente analizzato sotto il tema dell'identità.
… L'identità, pur essendo fin dall'inizio della modernità un tema centrale e un compito impegnativo, nel passaggio dall'"assegnazione" alla "conquista" (ossia da una società in cui si "nasceva" dentro la propria identità a una società in cui costruire tale identità è compito e responsabilità individuale), ha condiviso il destino di altri equipaggiamenti della vita: essendo ormai priva di una direzione definitiva una volta per tutte, e non essendo più tenuta a lasciarsi dietro di sé tracce solide e indistruttibili, ci si attende (e si preferisce) che si presti ad essere fusa e rimodellata in stampi di diversa forma. L'identità è diventata, da progetto di "tutta la vita", un attributo del momento."
Non è da sottovalutare l'umano bisogno di affermazione dell'individuo contemporaneo: stato d'animo estremamente diffuso, elemento che invece di "dare le ali" blocca a terra come un macigno. Ma allora come si può apprendere l'arte della vita, suggestivo titolo di questo libro? Dobbiamo tentare l'impossibile, dice Bauman.
Perché la felicità richiede di essere sempre un gradino sopra gli altri, ma la stima degli altri è fondamentale per dare basi all'autostima... Sempre delusi procediamo nella ricerca spasmodica della felicità. "Lascio ai lettori, sottolinea Bauman, di decidere se la coercizione a cercare la felicità nella forma praticata nella nostra società dei consumatori liquido-moderna, renda felice chi vi è costretto." Forse no, sembra volerci suggerire l'autore.
La nostra vita è un'opera d'arte - che lo sappiamo o no, che ci piaccio o no. Per viverla come esige l'arte della vita, dobbiamo - come ogni artista, quale che sia la sua arte - porci delle sfide difficili ( almeno nel momento in cui ce le poniamo) da contrastare a distanza ravvicinata; dobbiamo scegliere obiettivi che siano (almeno nel momento in cui li scegliamo) ben oltre la nostra portata, e standard di eccellenza irritanti per il loro modo ostinato di stare ( almeno per quanto si è visto fino allora) ben al di à di ciò che abbiamo saputo fare o che avremmo la capacità di fare. Dobbiamo tentare l'impossibile. E possiamo solo sperare - senza poterci basare su previsioni affidabili e tanto meno certe - di riuscire prima o poi, con uno sforzo lungo e lancinante, a eguagliare quegli standard e a raggiungere quegli obiettivi, dimostrandoci così all'altezza della sfida.

‘Il calcolo del nostro Pnl mette in conto i programmi televisivi che glorificano la violenza allo scopo di vendere i giocattoli corrispondenti ai nostri bambini. In compenso il Pnl non tiene conto della salute dei nostri figli, della qualità della loro istruzione né dell’allegria dei loro giochi.
Non misura la bellezza della nostra poesia o la solidità dei nostri matrimoni. Non pensa a valutare la qualità dei nostri dibattiti politici o l’integrità dei nostri rappresentanti. Non tiene conto del nostro coraggio, della nostra saggezza o della nostra cultura. Non dice nulla della nostra pietà o dell’attaccamento al nostro paese.
In breve, il Pnl misura tutto, tranne quello che rende la vita degna di essere vissuta’.

So in an extremely coincidental turn of events (for me) Bauman died the day after I finished this book. It was the first of his I've read and although this review isn't the most positive I still feel it's necessary to add my condolences. RIP to a great man.

Interesting in parts but on the whole fairly uneventful. The key theme of the book is that in order to come to terms with our 'liquid modern' world, we must view ourselves as 'artists of life':
The way he forms these ideas from a variety of philosophical and modern sociological sources was definitely interesting but I felt there was a little lack of focus on the whole. The idea of a 'liquid modernity' - a modernity that is constantly shifting; where values, relationships, and commitments are no longer fixed for more than a short period of time - is hardly a revolutionary one. Nevertheless there were definitely some gems of insight here and some extremely pretty passages. For example:
I particularly liked the introduction in which we get a brief overview of different conceptions of happiness through the history of philosophy, and later the anecdote of replacing the 'uprooting' of identity with a 'reanchoring' of identity:
Definitely some post-modern influence here. (I'm sure the Deleuzians would be happy to see people getting away from those pesky arborescent roots!)
Overall I would say it was a fairly enjoyable read, but it lacked that lacked that spark of profundity that any good work of philosophy hits you with. Maybe I'm being slightly harsh but I think 3* is fair. In general I don't think I'll be coming back to Bauman's work any time soon.

Advertencia: esto no es una reseña, es un desvarío más apropiado para una diario intimo que para un repaso público del libro.
Intente leer este libro tiempo atrás y me pareció conservador, el soliloquio de un viejito diagnosticando los males de la sociedad moderna. Aunque comparto la caracterización de la "modernidad liquida" y sus diagnósticos sociales, esta vez al leerlo me sonó que su ética personal al no ajustarse a los "tiempos que corren" buscaba explicar filosóficamente más que sociológicamente cómo y dónde cambio el ethos contemporáneo.
Lo abandoné y años más tarde vuelvo al libro pero esta vez venía masticando la pregunta sobre el cuidado de uno mismo, el buen vivir y la felicidad y lo poco que había leído del libro resurgió y me obligó a leerlo.
Sigo pensando que el libro expresa una visión que ante todo es de oposición al presente y afición a un pasado no solo más sólido sino "moralmente superior". No es una afirmación que el viejo ZB haga a la ligera como un panfleto vulgar en contra de esta "decadente juventud consumista y estúpida" como un podría escuchar en algún blog conservador sino una disección y repaso de lo que hoy tomamos como correcto, como camino a la felicidad, como moral.
Me gusta que en los cuatro capítulos más el epilogo, que podría haber sido todo un capítulo en sí mismo pero que por razones que desconozco ZB prefirió dejar en un par de páginas y cerrar de una vez por todas la andanza medio zigzagueante del libro, hay momentos donde pone en evidencia su punto de vista con argumentos que redimen cualquier problema que lo vacilante de la argumentación pudiera tener hasta ese momento. Porque, al menos yo, tuve dificultades en entender hacia dónde quería ir, más allá de la crítica ubicua aunque nunca virulenta a los valores actuales, a pesar que la introducción -a la que consideró un capítulo más- deja claro como el título que la cuestión de fondo es vivir entendido como un arte igual que hacer una escultura o pintar al oleo.
Me costó encontrar la conexión entre la crítica subyacente y su concepto de la vida como arte porque nunca deja en claro, o yo no lo entendí cosa que tampoco me sorprendería, qué cuerno significa para él eso. Es claro que el ve cierta oposición entre el ethos predominante, la felicidad individualista y egocéntrica y el éxito de esta empresa que es hacer de nuestras vidas una obra de arte pero creo que al libro le faltaba maduración aunque no por ello no enciende algunas mechas como dije antes.
El libro termino con unos 20 señaladores y el triple de párrafos marcados así que amerita que vuelva a ver si en una re lectura lo entiendo mejor.
Intente leer este libro tiempo atrás y me pareció conservador, el soliloquio de un viejito diagnosticando los males de la sociedad moderna. Aunque comparto la caracterización de la "modernidad liquida" y sus diagnósticos sociales, esta vez al leerlo me sonó que su ética personal al no ajustarse a los "tiempos que corren" buscaba explicar filosóficamente más que sociológicamente cómo y dónde cambio el ethos contemporáneo.
Lo abandoné y años más tarde vuelvo al libro pero esta vez venía masticando la pregunta sobre el cuidado de uno mismo, el buen vivir y la felicidad y lo poco que había leído del libro resurgió y me obligó a leerlo.
Sigo pensando que el libro expresa una visión que ante todo es de oposición al presente y afición a un pasado no solo más sólido sino "moralmente superior". No es una afirmación que el viejo ZB haga a la ligera como un panfleto vulgar en contra de esta "decadente juventud consumista y estúpida" como un podría escuchar en algún blog conservador sino una disección y repaso de lo que hoy tomamos como correcto, como camino a la felicidad, como moral.

O sociólogo polonês aborda a questão de que mais renda pessoal não significa na realidade maior felicidade. É uma ilusão criada para nos enganar. O consumo não traz a saciedade e a certeza. Nunca vai ser o bastante. Nessa era de liquidez, sempre estaremos correndo atrás dessa felicidade sem nunca chegar perto dela.
Para o autor, nós somos artistas, já que a vida não pode deixar de ser uma obra de arte porque é a vida de um ser dotado de vontade e liberdade de escolha. Disso resulta em sempre estarmos na companhia da incerteza. Praticar a arte da vida em nosso mundo líquido-moderno é viver em um estado de transformação permanente.
Ele finaliza o livro com a ideia de que todos somos confrontados com uma escolha entre a busca da felicidade se concentrar em nosso próprio bem-estar ou na preocupação com o bem-estar dos outros. E essa é a escolha fundamental que enfrentamos na procura desta tão desejada felicidade.
Livro muito inspirador. Deve ser apreciado aos poucos com pausas para reflexão, até porque não é um livro de fácil leitura. Ótimo para repensar nossa visão da vida.

Bauman offers a critique of the individualisation inherent in the contemporary narrative of happiness. He argues that the current ideal of a ‘pursuit’ of happiness has shifted from a teleological consideration, where happiness is a desired end state, to an ongoing process that can only be supported by continued consumption. He considers this change a ‘powerful destabilizing force’ that may be the ‘prime psychological factor responsible for… the “liquid” phase of modernity’ (30). Briefly, for Bauman, ‘liquid modernity’ is the latest stage of modernity where social life is experienced individualistically and where uncertainty is foundational. In response to the ongoing problematisation of happiness, Bauman offers what is almost a sociological self-help book. He rekindles existentialist ideas of individuality and suggests that we have a choice between a consumerist happiness and an artistic one. As a result, Bauman’s work is more prescriptive than analytical and lacks a consideration of social inequalities in its reliance on a now unpopular approach to individual action.

Questo concetto di moralità è il vero plus del libro, definire finalmente la moralità come un peccato, una vanità un segno di debolezza. Oggi viene a più riprese declamata, da chi vuole propinare la debolezza, indurci a concedere lasciapassari in nome della moralità, termine ampolloso che per me come per N. rappresenta solo un sinonimo di debolezza.
ed ancora sulla moralità: "l'incertezza è il terreno proprio della persona morale, l'unico suolo in cui la moralità può germogliare" Trovo che ci siano poche virtù, così oscenamente fasulle come la moralità, in taluni casi può essere il risultato di una culturale ancestrale legata ad un forte ancoramente alla religione che punisce e salva dai peccati.
Secondo Levinas l'assenza di moralità è iniziata con la domanda di Caino: " Sono forse io il custode di mio fratello?

كتاب لطيف وشيق واسلوب باومان بالتنقل بين المواضيع رائع.
من اهم نقاط هذا الكتاب:
٠زيادة دخل الناس لا تؤدي الى زيادة السعادة.
٠الناس فقدت هواية الانتظار واصبحت تبحث عن انجاز كل شيء بضغطة زر.
٠قيام الشركات الاستهلاكية وايدليوجية المجتمع الجديدة انه كلما زاد الاستهلاك زادت السعادة.
٠استعراض أشياء تحمل اللوغو مسألة كسب المكانة الاجتماعية.
٠اصبحت الهوية سائلة تتغير بتغير الرائج و بتغير ماهو مطلوب من الفرد.
٠حتى العلاقات اصبحت انا معك مادمت تفيدني ، علاقات خفيفة محسنة بلا التزام.
٠عدم اليقين هو الموطن الطبيعي لحياة الإنسان، يجب ان نضع لانفسنا تحديات يصعب مواجهتها، يجب أن نختار أهدافًا بعيدا عن ايدينا.

٠مهما حاولت جاهدًا عكس ذلك، فإن الحياة تُعاش في صحبة عدم اليقين. ويجب أن يظل كل قرار تعسفيًا، ما من أحد بعيد عن المخاطر وآمن من الفشل والندم المتأخر.
٠في الحداثة السائلة اصبح فن الحياة هو بناء الهوية ومن ثم هدمها و بناءها، أي ان الذات في تحول دائم في حين يجب ان نتقدي بسقراط بتكوين الذات والشخصية والهوية بحرية واستقلالية وعدم تقليد الشخصية التي بناها سقراط لنفسه آو لأية شخصية آخرى، أي كان من قام ببنائها والعيش بها.

'ذلك أن العزاء الوحيد المتاح لمراوغة الحياة السعيدة المرغوب فيها والمطلوبة هو البقاء على المسار الصحيح و طالما بقي الانسان في السباق، لا يسقط من الإرهاق ولايمنح بطاقة حمراء فإن الامل في النصر يبقى قائمًا وهكذا تتأكد الاسواق ان السعي خلف حلم السعادة لا يمكن آن ينتهي أبدًا وذلك بتحويل لهذا الحلم من رؤية لحياة كاملة ومرضية تمام الرضا الى بحث عن وسائل يعتقد بأنها ضرورية للوصول الى هذه الحياة'
كتاب لطيف وشيق واسلوب باومان بالتنقل بين المواضيع رائع.
من اهم نقاط هذا الكتاب:
٠زيادة دخل الناس لا تؤدي الى زيادة السعادة.
٠الناس فقدت هواية الانتظار واصبحت تبحث عن انجاز كل شيء بضغطة زر.
٠قيام الشركات الاستهلاكية وايدليوجية المجتمع الجديدة انه كلما زاد الاستهلاك زادت السعادة.
٠استعراض أشياء تحمل اللوغو مسألة كسب المكانة الاجتماعية.
٠اصبحت الهوية سائلة تتغير بتغير الرائج و بتغير ماهو مطلوب من الفرد.
٠حتى العلاقات اصبحت انا معك مادمت تفيدني ، علاقات خفيفة محسنة بلا التزام.
٠عدم اليقين هو الموطن الطبيعي لحياة الإنسان، يجب ان نضع لانفسنا تحديات يصعب مواجهتها، يجب أن نختار أهدافًا بعيدا عن ايدينا.
٠اصبح الناس يتهافتون لتحصيل الامتيازات ليشعروا بالقيمة، الرسالة الجديدة الطريق الى السعادة يمر عبر المتاجر وكلما كانت المتاجر اكثر خصوصية زادت السعادة، شعور التفوق.
٠فإن السعي الى السعادة هو أكثر مضادات التجمد فعالية
يكمن سر السعادة في عقلك وفي داخلك
٠اصبح الناس في زمن الحداثة السائلة هو مجتمع الفردانية والعمل من اجل الانا والفرد والجميع شخصيات ثانوية في حياتي.
٠المعنى الوحيد لفكرة السعادة بالنسبة لهم هو غياب التعاسة ودلت التعاسة على معنى تعطل الروتين وإحباط التوقع. الناس في الوسط هم الاكثر عرضة للتعاسة لانهم قلقون ع مكانتهم باستمرار.
٠واتضح ان البشر لكي يتمتعوا بالرضا عن حياتهم، يحتاجون الى العطاء والحب والمشاركة بقدر ما يحتاجون الى الاخذ والدفاع عن خصوصيتهم وحماية أنفسهم.
٠يجب أن تثق في قدرتك على إحداث فارق: فارق في مجرى حياتك بل وكذلك في العالم الذي تعيش فيه تلك الحياة.
٠مهما حاولت جاهدًا عكس ذلك، فإن الحياة تُعاش في صحبة عدم اليقين. ويجب أن يظل كل قرار تعسفيًا، ما من أحد بعيد عن المخاطر وآمن من الفشل والندم المتأخر.
٠في الحداثة السائلة اصبح فن الحياة هو بناء الهوية ومن ثم هدمها و بناءها، أي ان الذات في تحول دائم في حين يجب ان نتقدي بسقراط بتكوين الذات والشخصية والهوية بحرية واستقلالية وعدم تقليد الشخصية التي بناها سقراط لنفسه آو لأية شخصية آخرى، أي كان من قام ببنائها والعيش بها.

Tengo 31 años, soy soltera y no tengo planes de casarme ni de tener hijos. Mi más preciado tesoro es una pequeña biblioteca de libros que he coleccionado desde que percibo un salario. Me encanta la soledad y me agobian las multitudes. Mi vida laboral comenzó a los 23 y en este lapso he tenido seis trabajos, dos de ellos relacionados a mi carrera, el resto no.
Soy producto de mi tiempo histórico, de un tiempo moderno líquido en el que la norma es el cambio, la fluidez y la inestabilidad. En el que que huimos del compromiso; en el que compramos, no por necesidad sino para experimentar cosas nuevas; en el que nos inclinamos hacia individualidad; en el que los trabajos y las relaciones humanas son pasajeras.
El mundo se ha convertido en una enorme masa fluida, carente de una estructura fija, en el que la única certidumbre es la incertidumbre.
Bauman sostiene que en este mundo líquido, "somos felices mientras no perdamos la esperanza de ser felices".
Quiero aclarar que este libro no contiene una receta para la felicidad, es más, ni siquiera tiene una definición fija de lo que es la felicidad, ya que como Bauman dijo en una de sus tantas entrevistas: “No hay una sola forma de ser feliz, sino muchas, y estas están determinadas por el destino -todas aquellas cosas que nos suceden pero sobre las cuales no tenemos ninguna influencia-, y nuestro carácter [...]. El destino nos presenta la pluralidad de opciones que tenemos para obtener la felicidad y nuestro carácter elige entre estas opciones".
Más bien lo que ofrece es una explicación de cómo nuestro tiempo histórico está moldeando nuestros valores y por lo tanto, nuestra idea sobre la felicidad.

Este ensayo es una obra bastante corta, en la que Bauman magistralmente describe los procesos vitales a través de los cuales construimos nuestra vida. Está dividido en 3 capítulos, que hablan sobre la identificación de los valores que definen nuestra vida, encontrar nuestro hueco, rodearnos de gente que consideramos que nos complementan, y finalmente, a través del desarrollo de los proyectos que construimos (familia, trabajo, obras artísticas), logramos la plasmación final de quiénes somos y se lo expresamos a los demás a través de nuestros actos. Me ha gustado mucho.

Cuando empecé este libro creí que encontraría respuestas sobre la felicidad, pero encontré algo más interesante: mejores preguntas.
Leer a Zygmunt Bauman resultó una experiencia mucho más fascinante de lo que esperaba. Indiscutiblemente carezco de algunos conocimientos para poder asimilar el libro en su totalidad, pero el libro es bastante digerible si se le dedica tiempo y atención.

انتهيت من كتاب (فن الحياة) للفيلسوف البولندي زيجمونت بومان، صاحب سلسلة السيولة والتي تتضمن كتاب (الحداثة السائلة) والاخير كتاب ضروري لفهم أفق وفلسفة بومان.
في عمق الكتاب سنكتشف أن محرض التفكير في (فن الحياة)
سؤال لميشيل فوكو يقول:
اذا كان المصباح والمنزل عملاً فنياً فلماذا لاتكون حياة الفرد عملا فنيا؟
الكتاب رحلة فيلسوف مهموم بطرح الأسئلة.

ولأن الحياة خليط من العبث و المعنى، أصبح أجادة عيشها فنًا. "زيجمونت" يستطيع ببراعة تأملاته و قوة حجته خلق تصور واضح يصف بدقة الزمن الذي نعيش فيه، و من الناذر أن أرى شخص يستطيع شرح هذه الفوضى التي نعوم فيها جميعًا.
