How far will a man go to protect the woman he loves? This enchanting love story, set in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, will change your mind if you thought true love was impossible. Tameka Washington meets a young aspiring hip-hop artist who helps her seek justice after a brutal encounter with her abusive stepfather. This is an epic tale of one young girl’s incredible courage, resilience, and the invincible desire to combat psychological adversity and childhood domestic abuse. In addition, this novel reveals how hip-hop music can be used to shape public opinion with a desired political outcome during a heated New York City mayoral election.
This was a very good read and my first book by this author. Tameka story definitely needed to be told and I’m happy Kobe played a part in it helping her get the Justice she deserve. Although they had errors throughout the book it didn’t take away from the storyline. Also if you can’t handle books about rape this is NOT the book for you. Definitely recommend this book
Wow!! Child abuse and molestation were once taboo subjects. This author brought them to the forefront in this book. He has even brought men of the cloth with it as well. Tameka was abused for years with no one to turn to. Great writing.
A friend in college texted me "get this book!", so I ordered it and got it in the mail. This is possibly one, if not, the best novel I've ever read in a long time. Very sad, but a very necessary topic that needs to be shared and talked about in the community. I can relate to this topic. There was never a boring moment in this entire book. I actually read it in one day and plan to read it again. There was lots of symbolism and things to learn from. Tameka was a girl who was abused by her stepfather, who was a maniac, and a preacher. The Escape Diary was well written and a book you can actually quote from. I must say there were moments I actually cried, especially what her father did to her in the beginning of the book.
This was a good read, very emotional and addicting. I finished it over night in one day. This is a topic that needs to be talked about more often. It happens more often, especially among black girls like Tameka. I'm going to share this book. I would like to see a part 2 though.
It was hard to get through the first two chapters Bacardi the nature of the story and I couldn't imagine my kids going through that. After that this book kept me on edge. It would have been 5 stars but there were a few distracting editing/grammar mistakes.
I enjoyed Tameka's story. However I did not enjoy the ending. I don't think there's enough for a 2nd book. I would have liked to know what happened after meeting with her mother, did she still feel the need for drugs, where did Kobe move, etc. The ending felt like the entire book was full of details but the ending didn't give enough.
The content in this book was heart breaking very different for me but it definitely captivated from the beginning a bit to political for my liking but I still found myself not being able to put it down.
This was a great read however it had quite a few grammatical errors that made the book not flow as well. The story line was great and I had a hard time putting the book down.
This was a good read and my first book by this author. I had to take a break from reading the book earlier. It was too much for me. Tameka's story needed to be told. Kobe helps Tameka get her story out when no one wanted to believe her. Kobe helps Tameka get justice. I'm happy she had someone in her corner. Her mother went through the same thing, and for her to not believe her was sad. A lot of people don’t know that Victims will turn to drugs and alcohol to cope. Tameka's escape was her diary before doing drugs. I think the reason she snaps was that her mother didn’t believe her. * If you can’t handle books about children being rape or rape in general this story is not for you.*
I can’t tell you to sit back and enjoy this story because you won’t. So, grab your box of tissue, and get ready to cry your heart out.
This was an excellent storyline with a well thought out depiction of the affects of sexual assault. It covered everything from the predatory behavior of a trusted adult to the trauma, turmoil and subsequent self medication, along with the politics and legal system when a victim defends herself. I couldn't rate this book five stars due to the prolific errors throughout the book. Shame on the author for not having this story edited.
Thr was one of the saddest stories I've read about child abuse. To read about a Pastor, an upstanding man of his community, a husband, and stepdad being a sexual pervert raping his daughter at 11 years of age. Sad to realize the mom felt their lifestyle and image was more important than her child's well-being! My stomach was in knots. Still is. I gave this 2.5 🌟 for content.
I plan to to read this author Leon Thomas' first novel titled "Escape From Marcy" next.
