First things first- note to the author- please let it be Zaiden who Aline picks in the end!
This book is the second in a trilogy about Aline and her fight against the treacherous Father Sampson. As any good story, the odds are heavily against her (the creatures created by Sampson are mystically terrifying) but she has a power and purpose that will eventually make sense to her. I found myself immersed in the story, the writing flowed, the story kept a good pace.
I appreciated the complexity of the plot and the underlining eternal principles of agency, love, family, and absolute truth. These themes were well crafted into the story without coming across too blatant or preachy or even noticeable unless you were looking for them. I’m always looking for some sense of spirituality in contemporary fiction because it’s rare and precious. This book has that extra quality for me.
I love Melissa Hansen's works so far! The first in this series left me craving more and as soon as the second book came out I ordered 4 copies because I like to share my good fortune with my friends. While the first book is non-stop, the second book really makes you think about a person's potential for good and bad. I truly look forward to the next one!
