When DS Andy Calder busts a small-time pornography operation in south Glasgow, he suspects they’ve only touched the tip of the iceberg. With the Serious Crime Division desperately understaffed, DCI Dani Bevan brings in a fresh member of the team. The new recruit arrives just in time. A man is found murdered in an outhouse used to produce illicit material and the grisly body-count slowly starts to rise. The 9th instalment of the DCI Dani Bevan detective series follows two complex and distinct cases, each of which call on the team to question the origins of evil itself.
Katherine Pathak lives in rural north Essex with her husband and two young children. She has worked as a History teacher for over ten years and before that she worked in the book trade in London. Aoife's Chariot is her first novel. Katherine has lived in the south-east of England for most of her life, but her father's family come from the Isle of Arran in Scotland and this has been the inspiration for the fictional Island of Garansay, which is the stunning backdrop to this novel. Katherine's life-long interest in History also plays an important part in her writing and she tries to weave historical narratives into her imaginative and ingenious plots. Katherine is currently working on the second in the series of 'Imogen and Hugh Croft mysteries', which should appeal to readers who enjoy her well observed characters and gripping storylines. Katherine feels that a good psychological thriller should explore the quirks and eccentricities of human nature, but that they should always be believable and the plot should reward the reader with a deeply satisfying conclusion. Katherine enjoys writing the sort of novels that she likes to read herself and very much hopes that her readership feels the same!
Just a quick thank you for writing the best mystery series. I've loved every one I've read now I'm off to read number10. This should be exciting and I think the last.
There are three forms of legal system in Great Britain, none of which is "British". English and Welsh law does not apply in Scotland, or Northern Ireland. I really wish the English attitude would stop trying to obliterate the systems and national traits of its sister nations, all of which constitute Britain. Especially from a Scottish born author. Shame as this (once again) marred a good story for me, along with the usual errors (eg, "there's" instead of "theirs").
I am so grateful for Authors like Katherine Pathak. What a great time reading her novels. Not only do I enjoy her characters she has developed but the plots thicken with each book. Remains one of my all time favorite authors.
Like the rest in the series, this one kept me hanging on till the very end. Couple of fact check annoyances though..... Hong Kong was returned from the British to China in 97, not 91. And I think the author meant New Hampshire if talking about a governor in the US. But I guess who cares, it is a great story and I love to see the character development of the entire team. Even Andy has grown on me :)
This book was a massive improvement from book 8. The pace was steady and with 2 major cases running side by side, the story was fleshed out and interesting and focused on the current timeline rather than tied to a previous book as was the case with book 8.
I enjoyed the book and feel it merits an increase from my 4* ratings of late (previous books in series) to 5*. X
I have enjoyed all nine of Katherine Pathak's books, but I do have to wonder if she is preparing to phase Dani out, what with another new crew member and the final discussion at the end (which I won't spoil) Nevertheless I think Katherine is a strong author and will do whatever she judges is right for this series.
This was a good story line, but Bevan wasn't really part of the story. It brought in other parts of the team which was really good and interesting. It was like Bevan was being phased out which made total sense on the last page. Worth reading.
Another good read in the series, with new characters being led into the team. I found the sub plot with Alice distracting, but assume this is the set up for a new spin off series of books.
Another good read in this series. Wasn't quite sure about the two case scenario and was left wondering about the Chinese ending. But this did not effect my enjoyment.
3.5 Stars. This book focused less on Dani and more on other characters including a female DI who I don't recall from earlier books (I just discovered that I missed book 8). I thought this was fine.
Well, what can I say? I'm actually addicted to Katherine's books, just can't put them down once I start reading. This one is no exception, brilliant read x
